Worse experience at the San Mateo yoga studio. DAY TO REMEMBER FEB 20TH 2025.
I got to yoga class after work to get the stress out, but when I went there, no instructor showed up. We all waited for almost 20 minutes, still nothing from the manager or owner. With the help of a team member, we all managed to finish
the class BUT 20 minutes late. Still today, no apologies or compensation was offered.
HOPEFULLY THIS MATTER IS TREATED SERIOUSLY.

I came here today for the first time and I LOVED my Bikram yoga class with Christine. I swear my endorphins are still going from our 9:30 class. I haven’t participated in a yoga class in years, and our instructor Christine created a calm and welcoming experience. The pace was perfect, and she was a great coach while doing poses. I’m sure I’ll be feeling it tomorrow but I’m definitely looking forward to another class. Thank you!

I had an incredibly disappointing experience at this yoga studio due to an instructor named Alex. He is completely underqualified to be teaching yoga. Instead of creating a peaceful and calming environment, he paced around like it was some sort of military training. His communication skills were terrible—he has a thick accent and explained the poses so poorly that nobody could follow along. He wouldn’t even demonstrate the poses, and when I politely asked him to show one, he got sassy and just kept saying ‘listen.’
I wasn’t the only one confused—others were just standing around, unsure of what to do. When I asked him to teach in a more efficient way, he took it personally and started targeting me specifically, counting and critiquing only my movements. Instead of demonstrating how to properly do a pose, he’d just mumble something incoherent and leave everyone even more confused.
Honestly, I have no idea how this guy got hired. Alex is a complete dud of an instructor, and I beg the studio to replace him for the sake of everyone’s experience. Avoid his classes at all costs

The instructor was rude and not inclusive at all. Apparently when you can’t hold a position and drop your arm it is considered disrupting the whole class.

Used to be a nice studio. Now the place is messy/smelly, not enough ventilation. And the staff often has an attitude as well

Good studio. Those who leave bad reviews based on things like parking, thick accents, and strict teaching style are likely people who had certain expectations coming in plus are not experienced in bikram. Bikram's extremely difficult, forcing you to climb a real endurance mountain and face your mental self doubts constantly for an extra long period of time compared to other disciplines. Those people don't belong in such environments and are not athletes who persevere, they're nothing but complainers. Use discretion while reading reviews! I was welcomed and challenged and that's what I came for. I'd say the heat was too high/congested.

This place is with very limited parking especially if class happens during work time. Finding parking either street parking or surface parking is super hard. I routinely see cars parked illegally in restricted area in this tiny outdoor parking place. Given all this parking issue, I was 5 minutes late for the class. The studio was locked and seems nobody is at the front desk or even around to take care of things. I had to leave because there is no one to ask for assistance. Very disappointed experience. I drove 30 minutes on rFriday afternoon to take a yoga class and was shut out of the class door because of spending extra time to find parking. Please have staff working (other than teachers) in your studio to take care of things or at least answer questions during class time. Please also consider improving the parking situation like sharing the parking garage code with yoga students. If all these improvements can not be made, please be more flexible about class arrival time instead of shutting people out of the class.

I recently moved to the state and San Mateo area and was excited to find a new studio to continue my practice. I had previously been very fortunate to practice at a very inclusive, and warm and friendly studio, where we were invited to work with the body that was there on that day.
I signed up for a month at this San Mateo studio, and was put off after my first class. Students were called out for “not doing things the Bikram way”, there was no welcome to the studio as a new member, no introduction to the facilities, and the whole place felt cold and soulless. At one point, the teacher was so furious that a student was out of view behind a pole, she interrupted the class to have a conversation about it..
I was so disappointed, as someone who has always found yoga an inviting discipline - something that should be for all to practice whatever their mindset and ability on that day, sadly, was not the case at HYPSM. I’m just glad I didn’t sign up for a longer period of time.

I like yoga and I like sauna, so I decided to try hot yoga classes in San Mateo location. I enrolled as a new student, and got 2 weeks classes with a big discount. After this, I do yoga class once per week, but hoping to add one more class to my schedule soon. I love teacher Mika. She is so patient and confident in what she is teaching. The place is great, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to remain healthy and always look young :)

Hot Yoga Plus is a serious, no-bull Bikram 26/2 experience. It is VERY hot, far hotter than other hot studios I’ve been to, so that could be a challenge especially if you are new. Parking, reception, and changing rooms are all decent. The studio itself could do with some freshening up, but ultimately that’s all secondary to the full-on 26/2 experience. I’ve had a couple of different instructors, and they are all experienced, straightforward, and just get on with it. Recommended.

First time trying Hot Yoga. Alex was the instructor and did a great job with explaining what to expect during the session, showed me around the facility and recommended where I might sit for the session. He ran th a class at a pace that I could keep up with. It was a great experience.

Overall good. Very clean studio with supportive staff. Only 3 stalls in the shower. Can be a little busy for a 20 person class. The Bikram yoga is well taught, similar to other classes I attended

I don't know if this is specific to me and my body but I tried Bikram Yoga for the first time on Saturday November 9 and became very sick! I am 30 years old, fairly fit, run and practice other types of yoga regularly. I don't know if this is normal, but the room was so hot, several people walked out before the class was over, half of people in class laid down and did not do all poses. Other participants who walked into parking lot with me complained that it felt too hot and we're dizzy too. It was tough but I pushed through, thinking I was okay for my first time. But shortly after arriving home, I got a severe headache, my body felt freezing cold, I became nauseous with diarrhea and vomiting for the whole day. I likely got heat exhaustion and almost took myself to the ER! I don't think I'll be back! Try it with caution!

I come for the pilates and yin classes and have had a positive experience with each class. I love the heated classes and large, mirrored practice space at this studio. I forgot my water bottle last time and was able to purchase water for 2.50 with a credit card.

2019 Update: I have continued practicing Bikram here, and recently began taking a variety of pilates classes (classic, POP, and inferno). I've enjoyed the variety. And now that I've experienced a wider variety of instructors, I can say that I am enjoying the studio even more.
Original review
I've been practicing Bikram for several years at another studio in San Carlos. Since I live in San Mateo, I was excited to hear about this studio opening and gave it a try. The facility is certainly very well appointed. I wish they had a bathroom within the studio area itself, rather than down the hallway. The two instructors I experienced are also adhere more strictly to the dictates of Bikram than I have experienced before. I know this is designed for the benefit of the students but it comes across as a bit militaristic. I felt a little like a naughty child being scolded. Perhaps there is a way to convey this without making the students feel bad! Still, it's a fine Bikram yoga experience right in San Mateo.

I've had such great experiences here. I've had about 5 different instructors and they have all been helpful, patient, and give awesome workout classes. I personally leave each class feeling like I've gotten a good workout in and sore the next day (which I like). The hospitality there is great and your greeted with open arms each time you walk in. Will be continuing to go to this studio as long as I can:)

I love this hot yoga studio! I have not taken a Bikram class but I absolutely love the inferno and classic hot pilates classes, such a good workout! Combining benefits of pilates in a heated room to sweat it all out is the best kind of workout. Instructors are very sweet and encouraging as well :)

I came with an aim of improving my flexibility but my right glute, knee and right foot were all in pain. On my first day I was encouraged to participate through the entire class by doing whatever my body allowed me to. Well honestly speaking day 1 did feel tough because of the heat but I made it through the class thanks to the motivation from the trainer.
Next morning when I woke up I felt like my knee was healed. So much impact of one class was like a miracle. I’m only 5 classes old now and though my right side is still stiff, I do see how my body is changing with every session that I’m attending.
Yoga is truly powerful and kudos to Bikram hot yoga for taking it to a larger section of the world. The class is very scientifically designed, all trainers encourage you to do whatever your body is able to.
All in all I’ve come to understand that yoga is the best thing we can do to our body and it is for everyone at whatever age you are. I look forward to attending as many classes I can in a week. Thank you to everyone at Bikram hot yoga 🧘♀️

When I first started this studio, I had never touched yoga before. Not only is the entire team extraordinary in their craft, but they are willing to work with beginners as well as experts to exceed their levels of fitness each session resulting in a truey unique experience. The facility is extraordinarily clean, and well-maintained with multiple class schedules that accommodate my busy lifestyle. Bikram hot yoga San Mateo is now a part of my regular and routine, I cannot imagine my life without it.

Bikram Hot Yoga is a conveniently located hot yoga studio in San Mateo. There is parking behind the building, and the second floor studio is clean, spacious, and inviting. The staff has been very friendly to me over the 15 times I've been here. The classes are solid. Sometimes the room trends hot, but the instructors are usually on it. I do love the workout, the ability to stretch consistently in a hot room, and the feeling of the fresh air after a class.

My favorite class is the inferno Pilates. It’s a bit intense for someone who has tried it for the first time but I highly recommend it. One of the best workouts I have ever had. I personally don’t like running on a treadmill but I need that cardio and intensity this is the class.

I love how the room stays hot and the instructors give a lot of feedback. Many places I have been struggle with keeping the room consistently hot but this place does it well. I also really like the floor in this studio. I dislike how there is no bathroom in the changing room - it's a little bit awkward having to go out and use the bathroom where little kids are running around and playing after their dance classes. If there were bathrooms in the changing rooms I would have given this place a five!

They were nice but I couldn’t even force myself to stay the entire class. The room smelled disgusting and made me think it was unsanitary. Also, the instructions were not clear for someone who does not have a dance background. Decided to leave because for MLK day and my day off, I really don’t want to be trapped in something I hate.

Wonderful studio. I’ve taken 5 classes here and was happy I went each time. I have very low tolerance for heat and sweat easily, so the hot yoga classes are always very challenging for me! The classes here have really helped me work on calming my mind and breath. Mari is attentive and helped me correct my form in several poses. Heather is always cheerful and manages to make you smile during difficult poses. Love that there’s a parking area behind the building. The showers are very clean.

Bikram hot yoga in San Mateo is the best hot yoga class I’ve taken thus far. The level of heat and humidity makes it much more challenging than other classes I’ve taken and the quality of instructors seems to be better than most.
The changing & shower room could use more space since it gets a bit crowded sometimes, but it’s manageable. I also appreciate that there’s a parking garage in the building.

I'm so glad I tried Bikram Yoga and was hooked my very first session. I knew then the Magnitude of what was going to happen and after three and half years at San Mateo Bikram Yoga, my 59 year old body is capable of Advanced poses and I know my longevity will be greatly increased with quality of life... Everyone at SMBY has been so wonderful and I'm in this till I can't do it anymore which will be a long long time from now.

Fist time ever tired Bikram Hot Yoga December of last year and still is in this studio. I have tried one other studio in Vancouver as well and the experience is the same. This studio has a freshly installed flooring and is kept very clean. The studio is good size and there is always room for more drop-ins. The Restrooms/toilets are down the hall however it isn't a problem (no complain for the extra time you get with the cold air on the skin) ;) All the teachers are great and different in many ways, I enjoy practicing with different teachers as they bring different aspects of the healing practice into your life. Overall for me this studio is great as I can get my workout right after work and avoid the eastbound 92 traffic.

Absolutely super!!! I visited their Daly CIty and SF locations, there are same great instructors in absolutely beautiful, relaxed newly build studio. Design is amazing, even it's not you coming for :-)
Location is very confy, right of highway, before I drove from Foster city to SF I used location or gym, now 100% is here, easy parking for this time @4-6pm, good to wait for traffic dissolved and get back home like new.
As previous person mention this is pure Bikram studio.
