I’ve always been active - years as a tour guide meant plenty of time outdoors hiking, running, and kayaking - but I was never really a “gym guy.” Now at 48, I know how important it is to stay strong and maintain a balanced,healthy lifestyle as I get older. That’s why I decided it was time to finally learn strength training the right way. After a couple of underwhelming experiences with trainers who seemed to just go through the motions, I did my research to find someone with real experience, credentials, and great reviews and that’s how I landed on Liam at Impact Fitness. Liam has been awesome to work with! He’s clear, encouraging, and always focused on what works best for me. I have been training with Liam and Impact Fitness Oakland for the past 3+ years, and I am so grateful to Liam for his outstanding, supportive, patient, and nuanced expertise. He is the best personal trainer I have ever worked with, bar none. Prior to working with Liam, I lifted weights on and off for about a decade, but struggled with consistency and to make any real progress. Thanks to Liam's focus on functional strength, injury prevention, and proper form, I am the strongest I have ever been.

I think one way that Liam truly stands above the rest is his ability to easily pivot to another variation/option of exercise if something isn't working in your body (if something is causing pain or is activating the wrong muscle groups outside of the targets etc) - he has such a strong foundation of knowledge that he is able to seamlessly make adjustments or switch to an alternative. He truly does put the "personal" in personal training. Thanks to our hard work together, I have been able to deadlift and bb hip thrust nearly 1.5x my body weight, and continue forward on a progressive strength building program - all without a single injury.

Both Liam and Ed are super nice and passionate about what they do. The facility is clean, well appointed, and lovingly maintained. I look forward to many more years of training here!

I’ve had an absolutely fantastic experience at Impact fitness! My trainer, Liam, created a workout plan tailored specifically to my needs. Under his coaching, I’ve gotten stronger and more aware of my body. Training sessions are oriented towards motivating for steady improvement without the pushy and often dangerous “gym bro” culture of many places. I switched to this personalized approach as an alternative to cookie cutter programs like the orange theory workouts which were causing me more harm than good for my needs. I’m so glad I did! I especially appreciate how he observes my form, making sure that I never hurt myself. Beyond strength training, Liam has also provided input on diet and supplements to support my goals. Impact Fitness in Oakland has been such a valuable addition to my routine. I first joined through a friend’s referral, which gave me the perfect way to try it out without feeling pressured to commit right away. From the start, the personal trainers [Liam & Ed] impressed me with how knowledgeable and supportive they are. They really take the time to tailor the experience to your goals. I chose the group training classes, and they’ve been both motivating and uplifting. Since joining, I’ve made progress I never thought I could achieve on my own, and my understanding of proper technique has improved more than I expected. In 2022, I was looking for a trainer who could help me build up strength in my knees and also teach me how to lift weights with the correct form! My non-negotiables in identifying a trainer were someone who knew the different muscle groups and variations of exercises, made me feel safe, was patient, would challenge me, and supported my fitness goals. Impact Fitness and the trainers, Liam and Ed, embody all those characteristics!

On my first day, I could not lift a trap bar because of my form and general weakness in my knees. I was also unable to jump up and land on both of my feet or even crouch down in a squat without it being super uncomfortable. Each day, Liam was incredibly patient with me and celebrated all the little wins with me as my knee progressively got stronger. Liam also encouraged me to seek physical therapy and took time to incorporate some of my physical therapy exercises into the exercises that I was doing in the training. Fast forward to August 2025, I can easily do four sets of 192 lbs on the trap bar and maxed at 205 lbs. I can now squat while holding a 40lb dumbbell, and be confident in the strength of my knees. I also learned how to do different variations of different exercises to accommodate my height and relative flexibility. If you are wondering if this is the place for you, I would say BIG YES if:

1) You want to be in a safe and empowering gym where folks encourage you to push harder but also celebrate the big wins

2) New to strength training and do not know where to start

3) Have goals to improve muscle weakness and learn how different exercises work different muscle groups

4) Looking for a space that does not have "gym bro" culture that is centered on supporting people reaching their optimal health

Overall, I love this place and am so grateful to both Liam and Ed for being excellent trainers. I included a video of the inside of the gym, which is always kept clean, and they provide complimentary sweat towels, a filtered water station, and bathrooms. Truly a gem!

*Important note: I was enrolled in the semi-private class with 2-3 people per group. I have also taken the group class, which was great!*

I am 3 weeks into training with Liam and Ed and can already tell I am going to see a big difference. I came from another personal trainer who I was working with for a couple of years and not being pushed. Dont get me wrong, he was maintaining me but Ed and Liam truly stand by their 1% improvement everyday motto and push me. They are both pros and you can tell love what they do and take pride in helping their clients achieve their goals and open their eyes to new goals they didnt even realize. I am looking forward to seeing my 3 month and 6 month improvement.

I’ve been training with Liam at Impact Fitness for the past few months, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. After trying two other trainers in the Oakland area when I first moved here, Impact Fitness was a clear winner. The gym itself is top-notch, but what really sets it apart is Liam’s expertise and the results I’ve seen.

Liam has a great balance of pushing me past what I thought I could do while still being attentive and responsive. I joined Impact fitness 8 weeks ago & enjoyed 1 on 1 training with Ed. Not only were the workouts tailored to my skill level, they still incorporated a level of progressive difficulty that pushed me past my limits and definitely maximized my overall muscle growth.

I've started training at Impact Fitness with Liam about two years ago and after about 6 months, started attending the group classes with Ed in the mornings. I've never really thought I could lift more than a bag of rice and here I am doing all sorts of exercises with their guidance and expertise. I took a class led by Liam and really enjoyed it! I’ve taken a lot of group classes before and this was one of my favorites.

The class sizes are small so everyone gets individual attention and assistance. I appreciated the focus on technique and the instructor goes around correcting form or offering adjustments. It’s a welcoming environment and catered to all levels.

The gym is super clean and parking was easy - things that are hard to find at bigger chain gyms. There are stocked bathrooms, lockers, and updated gym equipment.

I highly recommend checking out Impact Fitness if you’re looking for a community based gym in Oakland!

Liam is an exceptional personal trainer who’s been key to me and my partner’s mountaineering success. In 2021-2022, he trained me for Mt. Vinson and Denali, building my strength to haul a heavy backpack and sled—starting from scratch on fitness, diet, and recovery. With his guidance, I summited both mountains, stronger and smarter about my health.

Fast forward to 2025, I trained with Liam again for an Everest summit attempt. This time, 5 days a week, he took my foundation to the next level—chin-ups went from a struggle to 2-3 full reps, and I’m deadlifting 1.5x my body weight, a huge win. Liam’s expertise on form and pacing keeps me injury-free while lifting heavier. He’s always aware of what I can handle, pushing me just right. 2019 was an extremely eventful year. One of the biggest surprises of the year was joining Coach Liam's Impact Oakland Fitness Program. I didn't expect to have any physical gains during the beginning of the year. However, it all started when my girlfriend at the time had a consultation with Liam to eat healthier as well as become more athletic and I tagged along with her. Liam was super friendly and quite cheerful and he encouraged me to workout with his group. Unfortunately, my girlfriend couldn't come to the workout sessions since she lived in San Francisco, but I gained all the benefits that she wanted :D.

I had a lot of fun for my first week workout sessions. Liam gave us exercises to complete and he was keen on my form and gave instructive feedback. Namely, some of the exercises I struggled with was deadlifts and it was something that I wanted to improve upon. Seeing my form dramatically improving during the first week of my workouts convinced me to continue further more with Liam's program.

Liam also provided nutrition coaching in his program. He introduced me to some clean healthy meals that I can cook by myself and encouraged me to meal prep. I tried following these recipes and I was quite surprise how easy it was to cook these meals. Within 2 hours of cooking, I was able to meal prep for 5 days! If you think about it, this can save you time and money relative to waiting in line and buying meals in downtown San Francisco. Every week, I would spend roughly $40 - $80 making my own food from Trader Joes. This could possibly be even cheaper if I decide to buy my groceries from local Chinese super markets in Oakland, Chinatown.

Continuing on with Liam's exercise program, I felt stronger and faster with each passing week. After consistently working out with Liam for about 4 to 5 times, I noticed that I could easily benchpress my weight and run over 6 miles. It made me so happy seeing the progress I've made throughout my time working out with Liam.

However, these were not the proudest accomplishments that I have achieve with Impact Fitness Oakland. On November, I've completed my first Spartan Race at AT&T Park. With Liam's training, I was able to to finish all the obstacles in the race. Additionally, throughout the time I was working out with Liam, I lost over 15 pounds and I've consistently kept that weight.

Overall, Liam is a very attentive trainer. He definitely knows how to help you achieve your fitness goals. It's just a matter of implementing his advice and doing it consistently. What I like about him the most is that he gives constant feedback on achieving your goals and he encourages everyone to achieve try harder. With this and his positivity, I've got to say that the best parts of my days was working out with Liam.

2019 was full of positive surprises. Can't wait to see what 2020 has in store and I am pretty sure that working out with Liam will help achieve my next goals.

I recently had the opportunity to attend a group training session at Impact Fitness led by Liam. Liam was very welcoming and provided me with a detailed overview of the class structure which consisted of a group warmup + breakout groups where we rotated through various exercises and movements.

The workouts were at a good pace and weights were based on our comfort + fitness levels. I appreciated how Liam rotated throughout the groups and provided encouragement, positive feedback, tips on improving the form of your movements, etc.

Unfortunately, I forgot to take photos but the facility has nice equipment, lockers, restrooms, changing rooms, and is very clean.

I'd highly recommend folks that are interested in improving their fitness to check out Impact Fitness. Liam is an excellent instructor, but more importantly, you can tell that he really cares about your fitness journey and being able to support you in reaching your goals.

I have been doing 1:1 training with Liam for 6 months and I have nothing but positive things to say! Not only is Liam extremely knowledgable, but he tailors the programs to your needs and goals, and he makes it fun! Every few weeks he switches up the program to keep things fresh and keep you feeling motivated and accomplished. I feel a lot stronger and have built a lot more muscle, endurance and overall confidence in my abilities.

I typically have a strong preference for female trainers but Liam is knowledgable about women's bodies and cycles and is the first male trainer that I have felt comfortable training with.

I had gym memberships before but never used them because gyms can feel intimidating and confusing. And I just thought I could never be that person.

Ed and Liam are incredibly supportive, knowledgeable, and kind. They create a really welcoming space that is comfortable and judgement-free. I immediately felt comfortable to actually try, ask questions, and just be a newbie to weight training. And they made me love exercise! This is the best gym I’ve ever been a part of. Liam and Ed created and cultivate an inclusive, friendly, and inspirational environment to help achieve fitness goals. I have been a client for more than a year and they have helped me far exceed the expectations I had when I first showed up. While I was intimidated due to my poor shape and lack of knowledge when starting out, they really made me feel they’re on my team. About a year ago I started searching for personal trainers, as I was pretty comfortable with weight lifting on my own but wanted to start pushing myself with heavier weights and different exercises. I am so glad I found Liam and this gym!

I've been doing 1:1 training with Liam for about a year now, and you can tell how much he loves what he does and truly cares about the people he works with. Liam has so much knowledge about training, and offers different variations of exercises that you can also do at home. We switch up the workout routine every 4 weeks, which I appreciate as it allows me to try new exercises and also come back to the old ones to see how much I've progressed. Liam ensures you have the right form while doing the exercises, always checks in on how you're feeling after a session, and most importantly ensures you are having fun and enjoying the workouts. He introduced me to boxing and we've incorporated it into our weekly routine, something I never knew I'd be into!

I haven't tried the group classes yet but that's next on my list, as they look like they are a lot of fun and the other trainer, Ed, seems great as well. I definitely recommend this gym to anyone looking for a great place to work out that also feels like a community.

Prior to coming to Impact Fitness, I was stagnant with any progress to my body goals. Going to my local gym was overwhelming due to not knowing how to properly use the machines or knowing what muscle groups I should focus on. For this reason, I started looking for personal training in Oakland. I’m grateful I came across Impact Fitness. After submitting a request for more information Liam reached out in a timely manner and asked me about my goals and expectations. After a short interview, we both decided the group training best suited me.

This 3 day a week experience has positively changed my physical body and my attitude towards strength training. I feel so much stronger, my body is toned, and I continue to challenge myself in all the programs Liam creates for us. This program allows you to build community and use your acquired knowledge anywhere you go. I can now use the exercises I learned at any gym or even at home with the proper equipment. From the get-go, the location was a major plus for me.

Conveniently situated in the heart of Oakland, the gym is easily accessible, making my search for the perfect "gym near me" an effortless endeavor.

I thought I was diligent to go the gym on my own volition, I’m not.

Recently moved to the east bay and was searching for a local strength/conditioning facility and stumbled across Impact Fitness Oakland.

As someone who has been strength training for numerous years, I can tell say this facility can fit anyone's strength training needs.

I've been training here with Liam for approximately 2 months and he's a great coach that helps you get the most out of the workouts.

Bullet points:
- Individuals of different shapes, sizes and strength levels train here which is great to see (not an intimidating environment)
- Great amount of equipment (barbells, dumb bells, bands, etc.)
- You train without shoes! (kind of cool, works on stability)
- In group training, Liam surveys the area to ensure strict form is being utilized (this is important as no one wants to get injured)
- Liam asks for your feedback (on class schedules, types of workouts, etc.)

Highlight: Liam has a very personable approach, checks in on your progress and genuinely cares about your growth. Never any pressure to sell you more training or random products like some traditional gyms might do.

One thing to note:
- The roads to get here are horrible (but that's Oakland for you). Potholes like there is no tomorrow.

Best gym I've gone to! Small classes mean you get the attention you need, Coach Liam and Ed are great at correcting your form and making sure you don't get injuries. They also pay special attention to existing injuries and will provide alternatives for any lift as needed.

I had multiple gym sessions with Liam and he is by far the best personal trainer in Oakland I've worked with.

Facility - clean, safe, well put, modern, and has ton of new equipments. Liam's music playlist during workouts is a big plus!

Coaching - I can tell that Liam really cares about safety over everything. For every set that I did, he checks in and ask which muscle do I feel more. He makes sure I'm targeting the correct muscles for each exercise and adjust form if needed.

Workouts - Definitely personalized to my lifestyle. I work out on my own time here and then but Liam introduces new different workouts that I've not been exposed to for variety (which makes working out a lot more fun!). Liam also gave great advice regarding nutrition to help my recovery period much faster.

TLDR: Impact fitness is a hidden gem in Oakland and it is the perfect place to start/continue your fitness journey.

To preface, this was me at baseline in case others can relate:
- I worked out on and off since my 20s, some weights but mostly a cardio bunny. As a result my weight has fluctuated over the years.
- Thought personal trainers were a waste of money since I've been "lifting" here and there for over 10 years. Also tried one from a major gym and got the ick.

What Impact fitness and coach Liam did for me:
The gym:
- For the ladies who might feel intimidated, there are no gym bro vibes here. The group classes have people of all body types, fitness level, age, background, etc. To put into perspective, I'm a 5'2" woman and met regular group class attendees who are smaller or older but can lift 20-30lbs more than I do. There are also men and women in these classes that look super experienced but seeing them struggle with everyone is motivating. Whether you're an introvert or extrovert, experienced or not, the group classes feel super welcoming.

- Working with a professional trainer made me realize how wrongly I was training before, leading to constant aches and pains. Liam consistently checks in and makes sure you are doing proper techniques and not experiencing pain at any point. It feels reassuring to have him help gauge how far I can safely push myself without worrying about injuries and still enjoying the workout.

- The gym facility itself is very clean and well-kept. No nasty, sweat-filled equipments and all the people are trained to be mindful about using the space.

- No salesman pitches, both Ed and Liam want to push you to independently train in a safe manner. But if you're the type of person that needs the extra push, these guys can adjust their training styles with the type of coaching you like. They're transparent about what's possible for you and provide constructive feedback.

My personal gains :
- I have gained and lost weight in all the right places. I'm "skinny fat," mostly due to my weight fluctuations. But check out the progress pic below. I wish I took a before pic but it's nice to see changes in my body that I thought was not possible.

- I am still trying to see how far I can transform my body in my 30s. I am not consistent with my workout, no excuses because I'm just not there yet. This is a journey to getting stronger and Impact fitness is definitely the right place to start.

Sincere post-workout review!  Here's my background. My previous job caused me chronic injuries. I'd been seeing orthopedists, personal trainers, and physical therapists for two years to strengthen my muscles after injuries. These visits and sessions never gave me what I wanted: a visually and physically healthy body without triggering my injuries. They told me my injuries had a long list of restrictions. I lost muscle mass and experienced pain around my injured areas from simple activities. My annual lab report was also concerning. Saddened by what I'd become, I felt depressed. Then I contacted Liam. Liam's background and knowledge in the fitness field have helped him provide me with proper workout techniques and a nutrition plan that strengthen my entire body while working around my injuries. I'm amazed I can do more than a handful of amazing exercises without pain or discomfort. I'm content, no lie!  It's been a year  with him, not only has my body toned up, but so has my lab report! I first started taking group classes with Liam in 2020. Unfortunately, covid happened and as the world shut down so did my commitment and consistency to my physical fitness. As things started opening up, I began 1-1 personal training with Liam 2-3x a week for about 6 months before transitioning to small groups and have had an amazing experience. During that first 6 months I lost all of the weight I gained during shelter in place and since then I've become significantly stronger.

I’m human and still have my ups and downs but Liam (and Eddie) have consistently been positive, motivating, and provide encouragement when my nutrition habits are slacking or I'm feeling frustrated due to a plateau.

I never thought I would ever love fitness or look forward to waking up at 5am in the morning to hit the gym. Coach Liam and Ed are the absolute best. First, the facility is secured with code to enter, huge, clean, modern, and looks super nice. Equipment is new, clean, and well taken care of. During, peak covid, we were masked up and equipment was thoroughly sanitized. There are showers and bathrooms that are clean, spacious, and modern.

Second, Liam as a coach has been awesome. Not just a trainer, but educator. Taught me about safe form, nutrition, exercises to do in commercial gyms, and plenty more. Really learned the importance of rest and stretching. I think his approach has been great, progressive overload, with time you lift heavier and better, really trust the process. The coaching app he uses is easy to navigate and he is really easy to get ahold of.

Third, the workouts. In the beginning, it was a lot of focusing on the basics, but with time, boy, these work outs had me in literal tears in the best way. These workouts can be personalized to your wants and needs. When they say no judgement zone, I really feel it at Impact Fitness. Never felt judged or belittled in any way.

I have been with Liam going 2 years in November. By far, this has been the best investment in myself. Pricey, but make your time/money worth it, show up, and stay focus! I started with private sessions and now onto semi private. There is group training available, haven't been myself, but always hear great things. He offers a free 1st personal training session, which I highly recommend. At Impact, I've done exercised and lifted heavy weights I never imagined I was able to do. I look forward to every session! The greatest gym I’ve been a member of hands down! Personal training with Liam is without an equal in the quality of his regimen, and the care he puts into teaching you form and technique. He cares that you succeed in your goals and he makes them his own. You’ll see progress instantly in activating different muscle groups and bulking up. This review was long overdue. I’ve been apart of Impact Fitness a little over a year now, first on zoom during the closures and then I’ve been attending the 6am class since 3x times week since reopening of gyms. For starters, this has been the longest I’ve ever committed to a gym. I was never a fan of gyms if I’m going to be honest. For one because I didn’t know how to properly use machines, so I’d stick to the usual cardio machines, stair climber, elliptical, treadmill which eventually became boring and led me to never stay consistent. Secondly, most of the local gyms are dirty, unkept and stinky. No thanks!

Until I was introduced to Liam & Impact Fitness, I have not looked back since. As a first timer in weight training, I really like that Liam is all about proper form & safety, he takes the time to demonstrate and explain thoroughly each exercise. Once you got the form down he pushes you to go heavier on the weights, go harder during a cardio sesh, which I love afterwards (not during of course 😅). Liam combines weight training and cardio for a fire workout. I have never left a class regretting being up at 5 to make it to the 6am class. Liam’s classes have become the highlight of my week because I know I’m going to get a killer workout. Since starting I’ve become stronger and have more energy throughout my day. It has even made a huge impact on my mood, also has helped me better control the stress from work. Impact fitness has made a huge impact in my life for the better and never did I imagine I would enjoy weight training as much as I do now.

We all know that working out in general has great benefits, but I also think the relationship you have with the gym makes all difference & if you’re looking for a clean, safe, intense but fun gym sessions, then impact fitness is your place! I promise you won’t regret joining!

I have read countless reviews about trainers who claim to be "The Best". Being the best is subjective in training as long as the program is sound. What makes a good trainer is the level of heart and effort they put into the program when the session is over. Making sure you have workouts to do when you are on your own and accountability are very important. When we go home without a plan we fail. Liam put his heart into helping the clients succeed outside of the sessions. This is what makes Liam one of the best there are. This isn't a subjective opinion.

Impact Fitness & personal training with Liam is 100% worth the time, money and energy! I can honestly say I felt the most motivated, strong, beautiful and energized during the 4-5 months I was training there. Every session, Liam was supportive, informative and super considerate of my physical needs (I was experiencing back pain for a few weeks, so he tailored my exercises to strengthen my core and reduce risk of further injury). I was looking for a trainer who knew his stuff (because I love to ask questions) and who could push me physically. Liam did that and so much more! He really taught me all the foundational things, showed me tips for setting up my exercises, breathing methods, warm up stretches, nutritional guidance, etc. All of the knowledge he's shared has helped me overcome my social anxiety in gyms and has really sparked my love for fitness again! The gym itself feels intimate but big enough for all your strength training needs. It's super clean, well kept, safety protocols in place (temperature check, sanitizer, shoes off, masks enforced). There are nice showers in the back with a ton of toiletries, hair dryers, lotions, etc. AND A TON OF FREE PARKING right outside. All these extra amenities helped a ton when I was commuting from San Jose to Oakland towards the end of my training program. Me driving an hour through Bay Area morning traffic is enough to show you how much I loved Impact Fitness and how much it's worth trying out.

My fiancé (at the time) and myself did the partner training with Liam for ten weeks, and we learned SO MUCH in such a short amount of time. Liam was very dedicated in ensuring he understood our personal goals, and provided so much direction both in the gym and with our nutrition. Liam brings an uplifting and encouraging energy to every class, motivating me to push myself even on days when I feel like being lazy. Liam, adapted to the virus-related gym closures, by offering virtual am and pm classes. His focus is on good form and safety and, just like the in-person classes, he closely monitors each of us and suggests adjustments. I have taken this unusual opportunity to participate in classes twice daily. Coach keeps the classes interesting, challenging and full of information and has just included basic boxing - fun. Liam also offers nutrition challenges and a program that helps you adjust your mental attitude to health/food. I recently hurt my ankle, Coach followed up frequently giving healthy advice. The gym is all inclusive everyone is sincerely encouraging and real. I am really, really old am still am an integral part of Team Liam. My struggle has been with losing weight and keeping it off. I know how to lose weight, but I had been struggling with keeping it off. I have lost 100 pounds twice in my lifetime and even went back up to 80 pounds overweight after that. I was also frustrated with my old personal trainer, who taught me some good things, but I would reach a plateau easily and then start to gain the weight again.

This affected me in a very negative way because I knew it was a matter of time until I started to gain the weight back. It was hard to maintain the weight loss, so I felt bad when I missed a session or two just by being too busy with everyday life.

When I hired Liam is when things began to change. Liam taught me some things that I had not heard of until then. He first taught me about nutrition and how important it was. I was a little unsure, but he was confident that it would work, so I just stuck with it. He also taught that increasing my overall strength would make me lose the weight and help to keep it off. And he gave me videos of the exercises he wanted me to do. I put them in my smart phone so I would have them when it was time to exercise so I would do them right every time. And sure enough, he was right. I don’t struggle to keep the weight off now. I do have to be consistent with my eating habits and continue to work those muscles in order to keep it off, but the weight is not increasing. Thank God!

Now, even though I still have another 20 pounds or so to lose, I know how to lose it and keep it off!

I thank Liam every time I see him! I highly recommend him and his program!

I signed up for the six week challenge on a whim and it was definetely the best choice I made in 2018. Coach Liam challenged my body weekly and kept me motivated with encouraging messages. I went from 159 to 175 lbs & at the same time my fat percentage decreased by about 2%. More importantly to me at least was that I had a lot of fun & feel a lot stronger/healthier which were my true goals. Don’t hesitate to give TFW a try!
