IN-SHAPE is a great athletic club to be a part of! They have expanded into 2 buildings, including a outdoor area, as well as indoor and outdoor pool, sauna, steam room and cold plunge. I really enjoy working out at IN-SHAPE because I feel that I can train in various ways, whether it is using machines, or the turf areas. I would highly recommend IN-SHAPE to others as it is a great gym for all ages and levels of fitness.

David Amaro does an excellent job managing the In-Shape Capitola location. He genuinely listens to members’ suggestions and feedback, and does everything within his power to improve the gym's services and facilities. As someone who has been a member for over 30 years, I’ve seen all the ups and downs this gym has experienced through changes in management. Some areas of the gym are understandably worn and in need of repair, but like many other long-time members, I’m very pleased with the recent improvements and upgrades that have been happening—slowly but steadily.

In-Shape Capitola remains one of the best gyms in town. It offers a full range of amenities, including indoor and outdoor pools, a steam room, a cold plunge, and a wide variety of group exercise classes. The instructors are excellent, especially in classes like Step, Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, and more. Although I’ve left the gym a couple of times in the past, I’ve always found myself returning—mainly because of the comprehensive facilities and the positive changes I’ve seen.

I’d like to personally thank David Amaro for his dedication and effective leadership.

I’d also like to thank the new owner too for keeping the gym modern and updated for the benefit of us members.

Amazing hot tub feels outdoors with the doors open which makes the area! Indoor pool is actually warm, and childcare is free for enrolled kids, which is only 20$ a month. There are 3 or 4 different indoor gyms and one outdoor gym! The classes sound fun too. They even have massage chairs to book and indoor ping pong! Cold plunge, steam and sauna rooms are onsite as well. Open till 11pm on weekdays, nice!

This review is not of the facility or services. This review is to let you know that if you need to cancel, even if your membership has been on hold for 6 months, you will be charged an additional month of membership regardless of the reason. When you put your account on hold, you are led to believe that it is an alternative to canceling in the moment. It is not. They will still take an additional month's fees at the end of the hold. After speaking with the asst. general manager and the general manager, it was clear that they were able to fix it but corporate doesn't want them to. InShape might feel (even to its employees) like a local gym, but it's just another larger corporation focused on money first hiding behind pleasant employees who are not empowered to always do right by the customer.

This gym is great. It definitely is a huge gym, but that is nice as there are plenty of machines to work on. I have also noticed that at peak time there does seem to be fewer parking spots, but I have never not been able to get parking.

Anything that breaks seems to be quickly fixed, and the new manager David has been exception about helping me out with my concerns.

This gym is great. I came over here from Capitola fitness which is a dump.
The monthly price is very fair for this gym.
Tons of equipment to use and never have to wait. If something I want is being used I can always go to the overflow next door but that is rare, even though the gym is very popular. The facility is always very clean. I see the cleaners in there every night b4 closing. The locker rooms are always relatively clean and the pool area is always clean. Staff are very friendly. I love the incentives like the free t shirts. I use this gym 7 days a week.

The outdoor facility looks very nice, I don't use it but I plan to start working that into my routine

My only complaint is that there seems to a serious maintenance problem in this gym. There seems to be some machines in the cardio room that constantly break down and go out of order for a very long time (months) without repair. It might be time to replace them. I use these machines a lot
so it would be nice to know they are sturdy. The locker room shower soaps and dirty clothes bags always run out with no replacement for days and weeks.
I will keep using this gym for a long time. But I hope they fix their maintenance problems.

Shady shady shady!!! So many issues with this place from the lack of maintenance, sanitation, mold, mildew. When you go to cancel they hit you with a fee that was never discussed or disclosed upon signing up which is a direct violation of penal code “California’s Health Studio Services Act (Civil Code section 1812.80-1812.98) provides specific protections to gym members, particularly regarding fees and contract terms” bad business ethics and practice. Go to 24 and buy the annual membership from Costco. In shape is now owned by California family fitness which has had multiple law suits for this very reason which lead to the revision of the penal code. I CANCELED MY MEMBERSHIP AND WILL NOT BE PAYING THE FEES. IN SHAPE YOU WILL SEE ME IN COURT!

The facility is pretty nice. I was really stoked on the sauna and steam room. Lots of equipment in solid condition.

A couple of gripes, they run out of towels quite frequently and the men’s locker room is a little grimy.
Also, It takes 30 days to cancel a membership. Meaning they charge you for an extra month whenever you decide you are done. Pretty scummy business practice. Not super impressed.

Very disappointing customer service. Not at all upfront about contracts, And the company doesn’t allow you to escalate outside of in shop management. There is no access to corporate or further help. Money hungry, wack establishment. Not worth what they are charging, chitty customer service.
Will charge you for a full month even if you have your account on hold and decide to cancel.

Edit: (after in shape left a response to my review) Funny you'd like to talk now, not the response I got initially. Sad we live a world where it's necessary to leave a bad review to get any sort of legitimate help.
At this point it's more worth it to leave my honest review up to help others. I called the first time to try and get some help no one wanted to help the undertone of response I got was "tough chit, it's in the contract you signed"
If $75 is worth it for a bad review and a loyally discouraged word of mouth customer that's up to you.

Beware they hide all kinds of hidden fees inside your contract with the lame excuse that "it's in the contract you signed" yea sure but if you were an up front upstanding business with ethical practices you'd make those fees explicitly known not hiding them in 20 pages of legal jargon.

$55 annual fee that was never explained - for what?
$5 every month to put your account on hold (I thought this would be better than canceling and reinstating because they charge a full month $75 just to reinstate, then got hit with an unexplained $55 annual fee)
$75 - full month charged if you decide to cancel even if you had your account on a $5 hold/freeze

0/5 stars if it was possible

So bummed to write this because I spent many years going to this gym. I rejoined after taking a few years off (paying double what I was paying before) and it's not the same. Biggest issue is that they snuck in a yearly fee of $49.99. When I called about it they said it was in the contract (or the side of the screen) and has zero compassion. It was clear this happens all the time for her response and they just don't care. I obviously don't blame the person on the phone - it's not their decision - but they should know how to respond with better customer service. I'm cancelling my membership and will make a most making sure my network knows that there's hidden fees so they aren't taken back like I was.

This place is the slowest at getting a simple maintenance done. The jacuzzi was down a month ago because of the drain cover coming loose. Took a week to get 3 screws in to secure the drain cover at the bottom of the jacuzzi. It's been down for week with the same problem. Now they're saying another week to fix it. It's 3 screws!!! They don't hire a local plumber to come fix it. It's literally a 5 minute fix but they have to wait for someone to come down from Stockton or wherever to fix it. This after they raised my membership up by 25 dollars. Not to mention the steam room has been down for a month when there's nothing wrong with it. The unit has a recall so they're making us go without so they can get a new unit. I wish there was a better option cuz I sure would take it. I can't believe they're making us wait for 2 weeks to put 3 screws in a drain cover just so it can happen again in a month. Just proof that big companies down care about the people that pay the bills!

P.S. None of this is directed to the staff in Capitola! I know this is all a corporate thing that they have no control over. The staff in Capitola are all nice and friendly. I just wish their hands weren't tied by the corporate handcuffs!

This place is a huge gym. I mostly went for the warm pool ( tiny) and the Yoga classes. However, I tried to cancel over a year ago and they allowed me to put a hold on my membership but it's not uncommon to see unfair late fees and other hidden fees. Some fitness clubs are also notorious for making it very difficult (if not impossible) to cancel your membership. For example, they'll make you jump through hoops — by repeatedly calling them or mailing out a physical cancellation request — when a simple meeting with the gym front desk should have done the trick.

Whether the gym is billing you too much or refusing to let you cancel, the type of case to file in these situations would be a breach of contract lawsuit.

ANOTHER UPDATE: For the love of anything, DON'T go to this gym. Don't sign up and get roped into their terms. Avoid at all costs.

Another month has gone by and no reply. They are trying to save face by responding to reviews and sending people to message privately, but they don't intend on honoring any kind of response. All I wanted was my grandfathered membership dues to be reinstated after the clubs COVID-time funny business to purge long-time members with reasonable fees.

UPDATE: They ask you to email them at the provided email to address these issues, but they don't intend on getting back to you. I sent an email the same day the Business Manager (Kerri) responded to my initial review back at the beginning of April. They send a canned response email with a support ticket number. I've sent several follow-ups with that ticket number and haven't heard a single thing back. Just as I mentioned in my original review, I reached out to them several times over the last 3 years, get directed to corporate, and then get ghosted. I originally tried calling the club with my particular issues and (due to COVID) wasn't encouraged to come in, but to talk to the corporate office. I called several months back and was told that I was no longer a member (their fault) and would need to work with the "corporate office" again.

Have also been hearing from friends that still are members there that conditions in the club are in extremely rough shape. A far cry from the days of when it was Spa Fitness. The reputation of In-Shape Capitola continues to spiral downward...

I was a 20+ year member of Spa Fitness/In-Shape leading into COVID in 2020. In the week after shutdown, I called and was assured my account was put on a hold. When the club started to open up again, I called and continued my hold because I wasn't interested in being in public places at that time. I also asked that they update me about my hold through physical letter because I don't have personal email and only use a work account. I also never allowed them to take my card/bank info because of predatory gym horror stories; so I always paid a full year in advance. Never heard anything. Called in Spring 2021 and they said my account was no longer active and that I had lost my grandfathered membership rate. I was furious. They told me to contact corporate. I did through their website contact portal. Never heard anything back. Tried again a few months later. Nothing.

Now 3 years later, I would like to go back to my old gym; mostly out of convenience. I go and look up the membership dues and it's $70 a month. This is wild. Talked to another long-time member who stopped going to In-Shape. They had a similar experience. Sounds almost like they were purposely allowing grandfathered memberships to lapse to get people locked into a much higher rate. So while I'd like to go back to my gym, I can't justify the price or the lack of integrity.

BEWARE - club fees increase drastically with no warning. Mine were just jumped up by 78%. Yes, nearly doubled. I had a decent plan there, my monthly dues were increased from $28 to $32 last June, and this week they notified me that my dues are going up by $25 a month starting June 1. That's a 78% increase. So if you are paying $70 a month now (don't sign on if you aren't already stuck), then one day you will likely get a notice that yours will jump by an additional $54. Also be aware that most members are paying $40 or less a month. Do not believe them that the "current" single club dues are $70/month, that is a lie told to gullible new members. The staff are all zombies on their phones and know nothing about the club. There are way better pools and gyms locally for what they say is their "current" price. It's sad to see what could be a great facility go so far downhill like this one has.

Very disappointed with inshape in capitola,ca. My fiance went to check out this location to try it out debating whether to add it on to our current package for a different location and the staff or sales rep decided to change our membership immediately without confirming with my fiance did it without her consent and it caused my family to pay the new rates we lost our grandfather discount. I contacted this location and the assistant manager was unwilling to help he honestly sounded like he could care less. Do not go to this location they perform fraudulent transactions without acknowledging the customer and refuse to apologize or undo the changes we never asked for. Will be contacting the better business bureau (BBB).

Just based on the shower curtains alone, I'm giving 3 stars. They are absolutely terrible and needed to be changed out ten years ago. Some of the facility/building is quite outdated as well. However, lot's of space at this gym, tons of quality equipment and a new outdoor pool. Also the massage chairs are amazing! I do like this gym but it could use a few upgrades.

In shape is great minus all the 60+ year old Karen’s acting as though they own the gym. These unhappy women will give unwanted advice, make rude comments and also feel entitled to dictate how long you should be on a machine. They will throw all of your stuff out of the locker and put all of there stuff in it. The Karen’s are usually there between 8 and 1100 a.m. if you do not want to get “Karened” go at another time like 4 in the morning. The gym could also used some more cleaning.

They give out towels at this location.

Outdoor pool out of service and under construction, which made lap swimming impossible. Indoor pool has no lanes, very small, and is “kid time” all the time. Maybe I missed a pool in my brief visit?

Locker room spacious and showers clean. Staff helpful and friendly. Machines well spaced out, with most if not all machines also available in an outdoor space.

(Re: Towels — Monterey location does NOT provide towels. despite also having a pool, jacuzzi, sauna, etc *requiring* the use of towels. The unmasked employee that informed me “because of COVID” they haven’t provided towels, while not one employee I observed wearing a mask. COVID is clearly not the concern here. Flat out Bull—)

in shape is a scam. they never showed me how to use any of the equipment and charged me $100 a month. I can't believe how much $ I wasted when no one would help me with figuring out the equipment or to get a regular work out routine established. Don't waste your time or money going to this gym! They only want your $!

There's a room here at the In-Shape Capitola location that can be used by any member when there is not a class scheduled today I was using the room and it was 10 minutes after 4:00 p.m. the next class wasn't scheduled till 4:30 the instructor for the next class came in early and told me that I had to leave the room 15 minutes early so that way he can set up class and I explained to him that I came in late I need at least another 10 minutes to finish my workout I will definitely be gone 5 minutes before your class starts and I will only use a small space he kept trying to talk to me and tell me I had to leave I explained to him that he was interrupting my workout I've got to finish my exercise I've only got so much time and we can discuss this afterwards I put my headphone back in my ear and continued to work out he went to the manager and said that I told him to meet him outside or excuse me to meet me outside afterwards and the manager here said that I can no longer use that room I am disabled I've been treated unfairly I did not say anything of the sort again I've used that room multiple times and I'm always gone before they start their class and I've never had an issue before

This started out with a bad situation, but I want to draw attention to how positive and responsive the manager was when I expressed concern.

My son is a young adult on the spectrum and he struggles with depression, obesity, and anxiety. To get up, and walk to the gym at 6am on his own accord is remarkable in itself.

When he went to scan in, the front desk attendant immediately turned him away, failing to pause and troubleshoot why his pass wasn’t working. She was rude and dismissive even when I called to clarify that he was indeed entitled to use the facilities.

My intention is to remind everyone that we all have something we are going through. Regardless of how much you may feel right, BE KIND.

Thank you, In-Shape, for turning a negative situation into a teaching moment!

I’ve been going to in the shape for the past 3 1/2 months and it’s been an amazing journey. Covid has really had a negative impact on both my physical and mental health. Going to the aqua fit class almost daily in the beautiful outdoor pool has been a lifesaver. The staff and other students in the class have been a great source of support and joy! I highly recommend it!

I’ve been an In-Shape customer for a good time now. Started in salinas, moved to Monterey and everything seemed to be perfectly fine. Recently, I moved to Watsonville and decided to start going to the one in Santa Cruz. For the month of July I had no issues; however, I went today and they didn’t let me in because my membership wasn’t allow there. The front desk personnel didn’t even try to solve the issue or offer ways to stay as a customer. Instead, she acted rude and gave me short answers. I had add my friend to my membership, and she didn’t even get to join me for one single day!!! Very very disappointed!!! I hope I can get my reimbursement for her registration. Way to kill my workout time! I decided to cancel my membership and truly believe they should train their employees how to treat clients, and explain to clients that “universal membership” does not cover every location! Gyms should notify members if there are any changes or restrictions to certain memberships.

When I first signed up this gym seemed like a great fit. However, over the last year I have realized how unorganized it really is. The fact that during a pandemic, they have everyone using the same spray bottles and same towels to dry off all their equipment (maybe replacing them I am not sure but potentially 1-3 times a day with a total of 10 bottles throughout the gym) is pretty disappointing for a $60 a month gym membership. Half the gym has been closed for majority of my membership, until recently they opened up a decent sized outside area that was somewhat equitable to the building they have had closed for the last year. Also if you cancel your membership (even due to concerns of covid) they charge you for a complete 30 days AFTER you have closed your membership. Classic SLIMY gym policies that I thought were on the way out in 2021, but I guess if you like poor business practices and drinking bang energy drinks then Inshape is still holding true to the standard.

Not a bad spot but the staff seems a bit unconcerned about keeping members. Had my kid join and my wife . The same day I was confronted and when I explained she just turned 13, i was ignored and the staff member asked my child directly. I'm a liar? My kid answered answered yes but after was very uncomfortable and asked, did she think I was too short? She doesnt feel welcomed back my wife is upset
I feel accused of lying , and I'm a returning member Who pays for 3 memberships. Consider this when joining. I'm likely moving to toadal fitness.

This gym is one of the best I been to! I love all the great workout equipment that is offered! I love the variety of amenities at this gym! I have yet to take advantage of everything offered but all the cardio & weight machines I have used have been up to par! I live in Santa Cruz & prefer this gym to others I have been to! *note* this review is from my experiences several years ago. I am willing to change my review after I go in and see if this facility has changed. Several years ago I had the most insane experiences with the childcare dept. I do not consider it safe. No, I will not be talking about those experiences as it is above and beyond. If you have children in the daycare, make sure to ask them every day about how the staff interact with them. I also noticed that the management seems to respond to all the one star reviews and genuinely care about the patrons. This impressed me. Until I noticed that the responses on every single review with a low rating had an apology and contact info to discuss issues. That is, until the one and only member who brought up lgbtq said they were leaving due to feeling unsafe. That review got nothing more than a "good luck on your fitness goals." It seemed....so off. That had me shook. This place is close to my house. I want to go here for the convenience. But the reviews, and my experiences as a younger person years ago make me feel like I won't be safe here. I really hope it's not the way it looks to be. There is new management, so maybe it will be ok?🤷

In-shape Capitola is the best. I've been here for 5 years, and it helped me get into the best shape of my life. No judgement zone, great employee's, friendly members, and amazing classes.

To some people it's a second home, and I personally can't imagine how my life would be without this company offering their service. At the gym we learn how failure leads to success in life, and to have a love for self improvement. The best thing I can do every day is to bring myself to my personal limit or to failure here. It leads to my growth and the path to successfully achieving what I'm working towards. A great life lesson for me in general that also breed a healthy nutritional diet, and lifestyle.

I hope this place stays alive through covid, I owe a good portion of my happiness to the existence of this particular gym.

Try getting ahold of a human to schedule a trainer or cancel your account. I dare you. Outside of that my experience at the Capitola facility for years was the usual mundane experiences of entitled Boomers not putting away equipment, resting or even socializing on machines between sets and staff nowhere to be seen on the floor when assistance was needed. People were getting their lockers and cars ripped off toward the tail end of my membership. And at one point I was finding piles of trash and discarded gin bottles in the parking structure everyday, leading me to rename it "Gin Shape".

This is a nice place. The equipment is all up to date and is maintained well. The staff are friendly and helpful. They are concerned with patron and staff safety, which is important in these times. I only wish they would open up the second building, as the weight room gets crowded some times. But that means the club is popular.
