I really enjoy the In-Shape on East Arden. It’s close to home, and their Freestyle Cycling and Core Training classes are great. Cheri is my favorite instructor — she’s fantastic! The gym is clean, organized, and easy to use.

259.99 Cancellation Fee.
The worst system I ever faced, I paid every month my membership fee and when I cancelled my membership, they charged me 259.99 just the cancellation fee how disgusting.
After 10 days another bill come to me $70 and I went to discuss what is this for again, they said it’s the fine for not giving 30 days notice and $10 again that you didn’t pay this $70 on time it’s now $80.
They are stealing money without reason. Very disappointing.

The place is disgusting. The toilets are cleaned once a week. I had to remove a racial slur from the thick dust on the back of a toilet in the men's bathroom. I also had to diffuse several situations in which people in the sauna made obnoxious and violent comments. The bald-headed manager was constantly complaining about his job, variously blaming the owners and the customers, all in earshot of the customers. Disgusting and low class, avoid.

The early morning crowd can feel a bit cliquish if you’re outside their age group, but what truly makes this gym shine is the staff before 8 a.m. In particular, Lucas is outstanding. He brings such an incredible level of energy, professionalism, and warmth to every interaction. He greets members by name, takes a genuine moment to ask how they’re doing, and sends them into their workout with encouragement—all at 4 a.m. His consistency, positivity, and personal touch creates a welcoming atmosphere that sets the tone for the entire day. It’s rare to find customer service delivered at a gym with this much authenticity and enthusiasm, and Lucas absolutely raises the bar.

I’ve also noticed that while some members have voiced complaints about the new manager, I’d like to highlight the positives: since their arrival, the sanitized paper towel stations & energy drink coolers have consistently been stocked and in order- the “little things that matter” seem to get addressed quickly. Yes, the energy has shifted a bit, but that’s natural when more structure and accountability is introduced into an environment. In the long run, these changes only improve the overall experience.

I have been going to this location for a year and at first it was great. Then the spa didn’t work for weeks at a time, then sauna, then spa again. Staff changed dramatically. Family members are hired, unprofessional talks behind the front counter in front of customers. Needless to say the child care doesn’t have empathetic or respectful staff, if they have enough staff… they’re always short handed and need proper ECE training. They only hire teenagers or kids under 20 with no kids of their own. Lack of education, empathy and understanding. (Snobby new mangers)

Zumba is probably the best part that instructor gets you movin! Downfall is Zumba takes away from the basketball players because there’s no where else to have the class..?!

We came from 24 Hour Fitness it was so dirty and disgusting. 24 Hours didn’t care about the member’s . Management just cared about sales. They were always on their phone.We would let Management and or the front desk about the machines when they weren’t working and tell them about how dirty the restrooms, and they would brush it off. We just got sick of it, and I was a member with them for quite a while. I’m glad that we quit. In Shape is amazing very friendly. It’s clean it’s professional. my husband and I we enjoy In Shape. I can’t say enough is so clean. Thank you In Shape.

Updated Review July 2025: I've been coming to this gym for about a year and a half--first a few times a week and now nearly daily. While the facilities and the training staff have been consistent and solid, the change in management a few months ago has noticeably affected the atmosphere--and not in a good way.

Even without directly interacting with the new manager, the shift in energy is hard to ignore. Turnover appears to be increasing, and some of the friendliest staff have left abruptly. The training staff here are great and so helpful, but lately have seemed on edge or tense. What used to feel like a motivating and supportive community now often feels cold and corporate.

I can't find it in my heart to "bomb" this location with a 1-star review because there are so many awesome people still sticking out a bad situation: the training staff are the best I’ve encountered at a commercial gym, several of the child care workers (new and veteran) obviously care for and remember my kids, and several member services staff still make a point to do what they can to keep this location operating like the community it has been. I hope that corporate management is working to address what’s happening behind the scenes, because the staff and members both deserve better.

Original Review from March 2025: The staff at East Arden are friendly and welcoming and feel like a part of the community at the gym. The training staff are all friendly and knowledgeable. They seem to really care about their clients. Machines are not frequently out of service, but I’ve noticed that when they are, they’re repaired much more quickly than at some other gyms. Functional equipment is well organized and easy to find. Facilities always feel clean. My kids love this kids club over other In Shape gyms we’ve been to and I like that there’s consistency in the staff. The pool area is very nice and good temp.

I work out at the In-Shape on Bond Road, but had to take my daughter to AAU hoop practice in Carmichael. I decided to use this In-Shape facility, and I was impressed with the facility. I am a HUGE fan of Elena’s Zumba class (Wed 9-9:50). She helps keep the participants aware of the next steps and keeps her steps pretty basic so that the participants are free to add their own flavors without losing the foundation of the steps themselves. She’s fantastic and Wednesday mornings are now my favorite workout of the week.

Like the many cadio machines, theater room is definitely an escape into movie watching while workkng out!
Nice to see the outside pool areas with longe chairs and tables.
The cycle room is cool too!
The sauna was little small for both men & women but useful.
Ladies lockers room found some areas were damaged to use the locks.

Bathrooms are terrible. Black mold growing on the ceiling. Just to wash my hands I try to get out of there quick. Maybe getting some sort of commercial dehumidifier and fan may help.

Also some of the blame is on the customer they get water everywhere and come in from outside dripping wet.

Edit: A year later, even after offering suggestions on how to fix the issue, the owner threatened legal action because apparently “black mold” is a specific species of fungus which I can’t prove. Well it appears black, and it appears to be mold, and even smells like it. There’s a picture. This is not an employee issue. This is a greedy owner / building design issue. Lack of airflow and high humidity you won’t be able to out clean it. It shouldn’t grow on the ceilings in the first place. Fans and a dehumidifier. Air conditioning. This is a health club, act like it.

The staff is very personable and friendly at the Arden location. I have three sons and they utilize the child care. I have nothing but good things to say about all of the child care staff. They always have activities for the kids and keep them entertained while I workout. The manager of the location Jeff takes pride in his position and maintains professionalism. I can tell that he genuinely cares about the members and staff at his location. I have been coming to this gym for over 13 years and it feels like home.

I've been a gym rat off and on for almost 40 years now, I like a simple small gym.
I like this location, it's my home gym. Nothing fancy and sometimes equipment is out of order much longer then it should be but there's good people there working out (in the early morning) later in the day I try to avoid, typical no gym etiquette knuckle head members at that time like most other gyms.

I do not use the locker rooms at all though, The only couple times I've been in there it was torn up most likely by all the "knuckleheads".

Would be awesome if they got some hammer strength equipment and updated a few of their older pieces of equipment but not a dealbreaker.

When I'm out of state or town and have to use other gyms I miss this one a lot and look forward to getting back home to it.

I'm outraged! On June 5, 2024, everything was removed from my locker! Makeup bag, shirt and shorts, Crocs shoes, hair styling products, underwear (not mass market). At the same time, the closet was locked with MY password! That is, they opened the closet with a key, took things out and closed it again. The guys at the reception found and returned only part of my things. Okay, I don't mind donating my things to those in need. But for a second. I often go to the pool or sauna after training. I leave my phone, headphones and car keys in the locker, the cost of which is clearly higher than the missing items. Act! I don’t want this situation to happen again and I’m worried that one day I won’t find either my wallet or my personal expensive items there. (Your regular customer for 2 years)

So I'm really disappointed with the stuff here, they seem to be really sexist.. today they come to me n another girl while we were in the swimming pool to tell us that our swimsuit was inappropriate for the club when we were in regular two pieces swimsuit. They make it sound like we should take sun in short pants or some?
It seems very bad to me that in the 21st century women continue to be subjected to this sexist way. Also everyone in the pool seemed to disagree with these rules..

I have been working with Dylan Williams for about 5 months now. I followed him to Rocklin from Arden due to his care for my training. He is focused on me and my well being; not trying to make me look like him or be someone else. I was having some elbow issues and he referred me to Lea for some deep tissue massage and stretching to help with the issue and that is helping. I was very impressed the last time I showed up as they were working together to make sure we were all on the same page with what my issues were and what they were seeing. I really felt like I was getting personal care and a program designed around me and my issues. In-Shape is lucky to have both of them on staff. I could not be happier with my progress and they are giving me the tools I need to address what I want to improve on.

Great all around fitness center. Outdoor pool and spa. Indoor basketball court, cycling room, yoga studio, cardio classes, free weights. Kids center is really well geared to the kids and staff does a great job. I work with a trainer here, James, he is fantastic. Sauna and steam room are clean and smell good. Everyone is nice and respectful.

I enjoy this gym because there are all ages of people at all levels of fitness.

I wish they would go back to the previous hours before pandemic and offer more classes. This is where they fail.

What an awful company. I am moving and they are still going to impose a 300 fee to me. They tell me they will only charge me 100 (still ridiculous) but I have to provide a bill at my new residence. I will continue my story of knowing Californiya Family Fitness at 6314 Fair Oaks Blvd, Carmichael, CA 95608. I continue to be disappointed as the pool at this address is just dirty (the paint inside the pool is dirty yellow and blue), the bottom is very dirty and not cleaned. Plus the bugs, there are VERY many of them that swim underwater and chase you if you just stand there without moving. Children's pool with very cold water with ducks swimming in it. See video. The pool services provided by this chain are terrible!!!!!

California Fitness is one of the best workout clubs I’ve been in, I just got out of a spin class and it was a very exciting experience with a wonderful instructor, she kept the class engaged and working toward a goal of fitness and health. PANDEMIC is OVER. For nearly two years I've been here in the same old lame excuse of why they won't open up back to their same hours. We can't find staff blah blah blah and some other excuses but they don't take anyone's request seriously. They always say "soon" yeah well ita been soo for weeks and and YEARS now. I requested multiple times and so have so many other people but they do nothing. Plus they SHUT OFF the steam room early so it's not even hot for the people who stay till the end. They keep on saying it's on a timer and we'll change it but they don't. Here's the bottom line they could change their staff problem and fix their hours but it's more of a money thing for them, they make more money and yet they still raise our prices and our monthly fees higher and higher but they don't lift a finger to change it. So unbelievably disappointed in them.

Since signing up with CFF last year, the East Arden location has changed their hours. These new hours are not within my ideal workout times, as they were when I first signed up.

Additionally, kids hours have changed. I'm not able to bring my kids at the desired times.

When I have brought my kids in, they've complained about a poor experience with the childcare workers. My 10-year old was forced to play red-light-green-light or sit to watch a movie, even though there were jungle gyms and a basketball court available for him to play on. They don't want to go back.

At sign-up, I was offered a discount for adding my bank account information for the gym to take monthly fees. But the discount was temporary, and the multiple times I tried to enter my info in the website, the page malfunctioned. I was never able to claim that discount.

When I called customer service at corporate on 3/27/22 at 10:33am, the lady I spoke to regularly interrupted me and raised her voice at me. I did not raise my voice back or use profanity. Her behavior prompted me to ask for another person to talk to, and she insisted there was no one else.

When I pressed her on getting help for my issue, she hung up the phone. After multiple attempts to cancel my membership without being penalized with high fees, I am turning to the Better Business Bureau for assistance.

I wish to have my membership terminated without oppressive cancellation fees. At this time, they refuse to honor my request.

in my opinion they weren't taking proper steps for cleanliness, canceled my membership and they continually pulled the money out of my account now they refused to refund

Been a member for over 20 years. Nice to see makeovers of space and rooms. It would be nice if Staff did a better job of keeping floors in the rooms free of lint clumps and mud and rocks. Some classes due to member attendance needs more equipment available, especially new workout mats. Some are pretty ripped up and grungy.

I bought one month online $40 to see if it's worth being a member of California family fitness. I found they have just basic machines, nothing advance, and it's not worth the monthly membership that they charge for the person. They have a very problematic policy for contact agreement. I believe it is not worth it at all because They want me to sign a contract for 12 months!!! I visit it two separate gyms and compared them with 24 Hours Fitness and Lifetime Fitness. I found they have better machines. Also, they have a good deal to be members with them; they are very flexible. I don't know why California Family Fitness has only an agreement for 12 months. They don't care about customers !!

My girlfriend and I have visited multiple times with the intention of adding me to her account. Everytime no one at the location is able to help us. The first time, we were told that the managers able to perform that operation are only in 9-5 M-F. Seems like a poor business plan that the only time your business can gain new customers is when most people are unavailable at their own jobs. Since that first visit. We have returned during that 9-5 window and each time the appropriate people have still not been available. Additionally, on this latest visit, the staff were even ruder than normal. To the point where one lady actually told my girlfriend that she could cancel her membership if she wanted.

Very friendly, and extremely well-stocked with new machines and a wide variety of equipment that a person of any fitness level can use successfully. I especially appreciate the cleanliness and mold-free environment in the bathroom and pool areas because I'm extremely allergic to mold. I'm trying to transition from being sedentary to active and the wonderful atmosphere really helps make it easier to get my behind in the door to workout :-)

The best trainer I've experienced at any Gym (Ivor). Nice atmosphere with the friendliest people around. Never have to wait for someone at the desk either. They make sure you are welcomed & helped efficiently. The equipment, pool, spa, steam room, sauna & best of all, the hydromassage are super. Kudos to all the staff!

My favorite gym. I live downtown but for a treat I drive there to enjoy the outdoor pool and workout area. They have the best pool ever and the nicest employees.

My husband and I walked in yesterday after leaving 24hour fitness to get information about cal fit because we drive past it often and we have heard so many advertisements about the gym.
After a rushed 5 min conversation with the front desk girl who had no interest in telling us any information about the gym, we decided we would never be a part. We simply wanted to know membership cost for a family and for some reason she could not tell a price and she didn’t know, instead kept saying come back to talk with sales rep on Monday, who was not there.
After that impression of how Cali fit does things we are going to go to 24hour fitness on fair oaks who up front gave us all the info needed. The front desk check in rep at 24hour took 15 mins explaining different options and even told us about their upcoming promo of a waived initiation fee for the month of August. Plus the gym was beautiful and fresh unlike the cal fit that had a very stale smell and equipment looked dated.

I’m disappointed that cal fit that they bead around the bush and prefer to push people away rather than be up front. Also you need to train your employees to make new comers feel more welcomed and invited. The impression I got from you all is your not upfront with your pricing and your checkin clerks could care less!
I’m disappointed I truly expected more I thought this gym was the best thing in California, it’s all hype. I think not.

Always seems fishy to me when you cant get a straightforward answer on pricing. Pushy sales people who try to get you roped in on something instead of just telling me how much it costs.
