I’m very disappointed with the lack of proper maintenance in the sauna. It feels unsafe to use — the warning signs are either missing or completely blank, which is concerning. The fire sprinkler on the ceiling is placed too low and needs to be relocated. I personally made contact with it — ouch! This is a serious safety hazard that should be addressed immediately.

I really hope management takes this feedback seriously and ensures the sauna is properly maintained and safe for all members. (Please see added pics of sauna)

Poor housekeeping and maintenance. I have been a member since 2010 (In-Shape Visalia). Last year I took a break and restarted my membership 2025 in the city of Porterville. Seeing the lack of regular cleaning, inadequate sanitation practices, and neglecting necessary repairs on gym equipment and women’s restroom.

I've only been going to this gym for a short time and it is a great gym but it does need to have personal trainers available. Seen 2 grown men pull up in there car and just walk right up in the gym and start working out this morning without checking in at the front desk, I saw this because I walked in behind them when I checked in......nobody.was at the front desk....thinking of cancelling my membership and just walking in like them! What's even worse is I saw both guys just kinda walking around to wherever they saw girls at and just start bothering and talking to them .... What kinda gym am I a member of????

The instructor was very good. But, I have to say that the music is way too loud. I'm sure it is beyond the safe hearing range. A gym is a place that promotes healthy living so it is a little hard to understand the blasting music. I hope you wanted an honest review.

The staff should honestly be properly trained on promotion advertising. I signed up in October as over the phone staff had told me there was a promo where it's a 2 dollar enrollment fee and 2 months of monthly payments were free at the start. I got told this information by 2 different employees from this location and the one on demaree, so I thought why not? I ended up getting charged nearly full price today and was told the promotion is basically a discount on your total monthly charge and after 1 year, you "technically" save 2 months.

They do have some good equipment and their cleaning and upkeep is good too. I haven't had problems with the gym so far other than the occasional breakdown of equipment but that is normal in any gym. Thank you for helping me change my life

I love that they have a kids zone! It’s very convenient at times and my girls always enjoy their time there. All the staff is kind and very friendly! They’re always ready to help if we have any questions or concerns.

Don't ever go here I made the mistake of buying a membership that went to cancel it a few months later and even though it was canceled they forced me to pay up for the month than the cancelation finally went through. About 4 months later they never charged me again until recently when I got a notification that in shape withdrew about $130 in membership fees when my account was already logged canceled. I called them and they told me somehow I'm stuck in a year long membership with them in a legal contract which I begged them to take me off of or cancel cause I never signed back up in the first place. The lady refused than asked if I'd like to buy out the rest of my contract then or pay them every month for the next year. I hung up and finally was able to dispute the charges to my account and canceled my card cause they were forcing me into another contract.

The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, explaining the facility, is use and amenities and even called me back at home to explain more info about senior membership plans and taking medical leave and only paying a small fee when your membership is on hold. It was clean and had lots of different machines to work out on. Tons of parking right in front of the gym.

The gym itself was alright and I was having a great experience until I relocated and could no longer go to the gym so I was planning to cancel but I saw that for the yearly subscription you have to pay $125 to cancel and I didn’t have that kind of money at the time so I had a meeting with the manager to talk about my situation and he told me that I could put my account on hold and would only be charged $5 a month until my subscription ended and I didn’t need to pay the full amount just the $5 each month and the $30 at the end of the year but then I was charged $50 for some annual fee and made a call to in shape making sure I’m only going to still be paying the $5 and they told me that I would be only paying $5 but they told me that I’m just building up money that I’m going to have to pay at the end the full amount of the yearly subscription! And when I told them about the meeting I had with the manager they told me that there’s no avoiding the fee. So why didn’t they just tell me that in the first place and why did they tell me to freeze my account so in reality I’m paying extra while freezing my account so instead I cancel fully a few months later and pay $140 and I was told by a worker that my account was at zero and that I owe nothing to them any longer but two days later I was charged again! I was charged for 17 days for the gym and I called saying if I can get a refund bc I’m not going to be able to go and they told me that I will not be getting a refund. They have taken so much money from my bank account and when I try to talk about the transactions they made it’s always a different story. They do not care about their customers and it’s a waste of money. If you wanna join this gym good luck because you’re basically going to be getting fee after fee for everything as soon as you join. Worst experience ever

Been a member of this gym for 18 years.Sinced being acquired by another company they have doubled the price for my membership. Spoke to the manager very nice guy however said there's nothing he can do.I spoke to other members that are also grandfathered in and there still paying the same price.Cant get a hold of corporate as they no longer have a number.Also they don't respond to there email support tickets.Very disappointed member.

It’s a pretty good gym with a friendly atmosphere. Only thing is that it’s extremely crowded at times. Best to avoid going from 4-8 which is half their hours but it is what it is. It’s also a little pricey for what it is. Personal opinion but get a feel for yourself and try it out.

Never been here but when i called i explained i had a membership at another location in another city the young girl that answered the phone told me i had to pay more to go here. I asked her if she could run my tag number to see if i had access she said no it doesn't work that way and i Would have to contact my in shape and upgrade. 5 months ago i would say avoid this place but after meeting Jarrod Mills. I love this place now! 4 months ago i met with Aaron (Manager). I was going to sign up with the $100 enrollment fee and $20 monthly but he kept trying to push the 4 day training sessions on me even after i said no thanks im good like 4x in person (at least 7x over the phone). He asked why, i told him my wife and I are expecting a baby in 5 months....So i do my 7 day free trial, i only go 2 days because Aaron kept calling me during my work days and while i was at the gym still trying to get me to sign up. The last deal he gave me was $60 off the enrollment fee (i still said no). So to make this long story short everyone there is very pushy and are all about their numbers and sales. Now on January 18th my cousin takes me back to meet Jarrod Mills and this guy is easy to talk to not pushy and because of how he treats guests is the reason i signed up. I paid $100 enrollment fee and i also signed up with a trainer for $200 (Jarrod can help you pick a trainer that will work for you but if you need a trainer ask for Dom). Reason he got me to buy and sign up was due to the fact he didn't treat me like a sale. So if you are thinking about signing up and want a great experience ask for Jarrod. He will make you feel comfortable and can relate to anyone from fit to someone who is just getting started.

This place is great. The staff, the people, and the equipment. It's just great and I love it. However it can do better with the cleaning. The other day I went to the locker rooms and I saw a ton of paper all over the sink. Besides that this place is great and it is worth paying an extra $10 over Planet Obesity.

Though I do not use the services of a personal trainer, I want to compliment trainer Rocky and the way he interacts with his clients. I just become a memember to this gym location Porterville California. I do have to agree with the free weights being all over the place and unorganized. It has to do with the fact the gym members do not care to put them back where they got them. Gym employees can only do so much.I have been a gym member all over the country and in different area of California and to keep a gym organize it starts with gym memebers carrying and doing their part to keep they gym organize.

I like the pool area and the ab workout addition. It is very cramped for an In Shape. Gym is not cleaned properly. There are dust bunnies in all corners and staff do not keep the bathrooms properly cleaned. If the health inspector was to visit it would probably not pass inspection.I have seen staff walk around with a towel and clean every third mirror in the weight room with a dirty towel.....really?? Hours on the weekend need to be longer at least 10 p.m.

HERE are the positive and negative aspects of using the Porterville branch:
POSITIVE
1. The staff are always friendly, courteous and respectful
2. The steam room is CONTINUOUSLY cleaned by the housekeeping staff
3. The sauna is regularly cleaned by the housekeeping staff
4. The trainers are friendly, courteous and work especially well with handicapped patrons
5. There is never a fuss over how many clean towels one requests-use as many as you want
6. The instructors for special classes (yoga, etc.) are friendly, courteous, respectful and work
especially well with patrons who are fifty+

NEGATIVE
1. There is only ONE pool, and it frequently has the heating unit not working properly
2. There is only ONE whirlpool-and it frequently either looks grubby or is closed
for cleaning during PEAK HOURS OF USE, rather than during the wee hours of the
night and morning as one would expect
3. Dirty/wet towels left on the locker room floors and shower stalls are VERY common
4. All but ONE of the shower stalls lack proper, hand-held shower equipment
5. All but ONE of the shower stalls lack a bench to sit on for patrons who cannot stand
6. All but ONE of the shower stalls are so tiny that one cannot move about freely
7. Unlike the other branches, the Porterville branch totally lacks tvs in the locker rooms
8. Unlike the other branches, the Porterville branch totally lacks a leisure room for its patrons
to gather at/socialize

Currently, the most SERIOUS problem with the Porterville branch is that it is undergoing an extensive
(and leisurely!) RE-MODELING to bring it up to the standards of the other branches. Part of that re-modeling has resulted in all of the locker rooms/shower and toilet facilities being CLOSED to its patrons!

Needless to say, this is terribly UNHEALTHY-not to mention highly inconvenient-for all its patrons, but especially more so for those families with small children!! Rather than close the branch while it undergoes this extensive and prolonged period of re-modeling, allowing its contracted patrons a relief from their monthly dues during this period, it has unwisely chosen to remain OPEN, forcing its patrons to have to endure the discomfort of being sweaty/unclean after their workout! This problem is especially alarming for those patrons who continue to use the pool and the whirlpool, since use of either or both naturally constitutes a higher probability of coming into contact with bacteria...and no effective way to wash it off oneself EXCEPT for the use of the cold water hose present near the pool! Imagine how grossly uncomfortable it is trying to hose oneself off during the WINTER!

Even more alarming, with the current lack of toilet facilites, is the high probability that children using the pool are...ahem...using it in a manner it WAS NOT intended for (Kids:"Hey everyone! Let's PEE IN THE POOL!") and I will bet the farm that the ADULTS are doing the same!

Overall, considering all the plus and minus factors at work here, I currently give it ONE STAR because without access to toilets, showers and wash basins for it's patrons, it is basically UNFIT TO USE! Had this NOT been the current situation, I would have given the Porterville branch of In-Shape City a solid three-star rating.
