There are a lot of things you can overlook at JAG Gymnastics in Culver City—the overpriced classes, the rundown equipment, the autopay hustle—but the racism? That’s where it crosses the line.

Let’s be clear: not all the coaches are racist—some are amazing and clearly care about the kids. But enough of them are rude, dismissive, or condescending to children and parents of color that it starts to feel like more than coincidence. And when you try to say something? That’s when the real issue shows up: management does not care.

Helga from HR is the last person who should be handling people. She’s unbothered, unprofessional, and flat-out dismissive when serious concerns are raised. She’s mixed up the names of multiple Asian staff members—repeatedly. At one point, she was overheard telling a parent that “Spain Spanish is more proper than Mexican Spanish.” It wasn’t a misunderstanding. She said it, and she said it proudly. This is the person supposed to be handling complaints.

And then there’s JR, who somehow manages to be both passive and aggressive at the same time. The vibes are awful. He doesn’t listen, he doesn’t help, and he always feels one step away from blaming you for daring to ask a question. He seems more concerned with defending the brand than protecting the children or supporting the staff.

If you were lucky enough to meet Alexus at the front desk back in the day, you probably noticed the shift when she was gone. She was one of the few people who brought genuine warmth, care, and competence to that place. When she left, it was like a light went out—and nothing has replaced it.

This isn’t just about uncomfortable comments or rude moments. It’s about a culture that allows this behavior to exist unchecked. A place where parents of color are treated differently, where complaints go ignored, and where leadership defends itself instead of listening.

Your child might have fun in a class or two. But is that worth supporting a place that shrugs at racism, gaslights concerned families, and pretends it’s all just miscommunication?

JAG needs a total leadership reset. Until then, avoid it. Your money—and your kid—deserve better.

“Gymnastics is a dangerous sport. We’re sorry we didn’t meet your expectations. We hope that this didn’t dampen your love for gymnastics,” Hilga told us and our 12-year-old daughter the day after she suffered a NECK INJURY at gymnastics camp under the (lack of) supervision and coaching from team coach, Jordan, who had been running floor routines with team gymnasts who had state championships the following day while giving my daughter a single direction the entire day, declining to spot her when she asked repeatedly, and leaving her to “practice” high skill-level gymnastics on her own. He hadn’t bothered learning her name, finding out what her gymnastics background was, what her goals were for that day, what she had been working on with other coaches in the days before, or giving her firm limits on what she could and couldn’t do. Towards the end of the day, our frustrated daughter went for a pass without a clear intention, got in trouble mid-air, tried to correct, and landed on her neck. Coach Jordan had his back turned at the time and did not see her fall. Another girl alerted him and he went to check on her if she was ok. In shock, my daughter instinctively replied, yes, declined an ice pack, but sat out for the remaining 45 minutes of camp. I found out about this when my daughter walked through the door of our home after our nanny picked her up. No phone call. No incident report. No accountability. According to upper management, it was my 12-year-old daughter’s responsibility to communicate with the coach and to ensure her own safety.

Prior to this incident, my daughter was SO happy with her experience. She is devastated.

Please know that when you take your child to JAG, or frankly, any gym… there is not enough personnel to ensure your child’s safety while doing a very dangerous sport. If your child is not competing, do not let team coaches near them - if they are not team gymnasts, they do not matter to them. Take personal responsibility to ensure that you trust the coach with your child 100%. Do not assume, as I had, that their slogan of “doing great things for kids” translates, as you might assume, to them prioritizing your child’s safety. There is no licensing body or governing body for gymnastics gyms. No one to hold them accountable. Injuries are under-reported. I learned this after my daughter’s injury when I checked in (to confirm my sanity) with a friend who had coached rhythmic gymnastics for decades. I learned that she was not allowed to do recreational gymnastics because of how dangerous it is, and subsequently did not allow her own daughter and granddaughter to participate in the sport either. I wish I had known this. I want every parent to know this.

Been talking my daughter there for a year she barely learned anything, even the basics. Not worth the $$$ they charge. I ended up teaching my daughter myself and it took less than a week for her to master the basics including the cartwheels.

The amount of attention, compassion, and support the coaches give the kids is truly admirable. I have seen so much growth in the gymnasts confidence, skills, and happiness. It's an amazing place. To say they do "good things for kids" is an understatement. They are a childhood haven where kids are put first. Worth every penny. No where else like it.

They let children come only barefoot. No socks.
And what’s more important- they don’t sell socks with rubber sole! (as it is always sold in trampoline parks which also prevent you from slipping)
So, as my child’s skin is sensitive to warts, candida and other things which you can get in public places we had to leave.

JAG gym is a great gymnasium. The facility is gold standard and their coaching staff is top notch. The only downside is the tuition. It's pricey but that rent and amount of equipment has so be outrageous! 😝 We've been here 5 years and my daughter is very happy here. I've loved watching her progress and growth. Thank you JAG for all you provide.

My Daughter Went here for over a year and she loved coming here. I love how big the place is and all the gymnastic equipment, they have to offer.

My issue was that it seemed like that it was more about the numbers and the head count than the service.

When you go there you literally feel like you are at a cattle ranch and the kids are like the cattle. They are very organized and work like a clock and very efficient which makes them a great money making business but not a great teaching place.

They hand pick the exceptional and super talented kids which help them win tournaments. Which makes complete sense as business and that is why they have so many trophies, which is probably why they are so well known. That is why their rates are so high. Probably why more well off kids come hear, because parents think their kids will come here and bring trophies. NOT the case for most kids.

The problem is not that every kids will not turn out to be a champion. The problem is that I don't think that they really care to teach and help the average kids improve and get better. I felt bad for my daughter as she tried hard and I feel like the guidance was not there. Not because the couches were not capable but because the whole class was not about teaching the kids and helping them improve their techniques. It was more about just getting the maximum number of kids in and out well like Cattles. Not much feedback.

You would expect more from one of the more if not most expensive Gymnastic Gyms. You would expect more attention and follow through with the kids to get them going forward and improving their techniques.

I would call this place more of place to take your kids to keep them busy and out of your hair. A place that is kinds fun. They may pick up some things here and there. No intention or Direction.

Find a place that cares more. That's what we did.

We had our first class today and the coach was lovely. My daughter really enjoyed it. Yesterday we went to check out the gym and the coach in the front desk was extremely helpful and patient explaining all the ins and outs of the class so has a great customer service experience. The only reason I'm giving it 4 and not 5 stars is because the facilities (waiting room upstairs and downstairs)are really dirty. I appreciate all the fun things they have like toys and books, bit the floors, tables chairs, everything is dusty and have spider webs. It's a pricey gym and I would like to see some thought go into the cleanliness aspect of it. Hopefully it will be an easy fix and it's a one odd thing.

The ninja class is good and my son loves it. But they don’t allow refund or rescheduling of winter day camp. We couldn’t go because of covid exposure from family. I don’t have the heart to potentially expose all the kids. It’s almost 200 dollar per day winter day camp fee plus pizza lunch. It’s very disheartening amidst the stress we have.

Walked in to get party information for a friend, they kind of looked at me funny and never even said hello but continued to talk amongst one another until I interrupted. For me customer service is big, they offered me a simple sheet of paper and told me an outlandish price but showed me nothing.Good customer service easily persuades one this place had none. I was disappointed that they didn’t do more and can’t think about spending that amount of money. For 1hour and 30 minutes, with no food but you get a 800 medal I would have loved to have had a tour then given the information.
Bad customer service should equal a depletion in hours....

JR Roughton "that's not going to happen" he stated from his chair in the office.

My 4 year old daughter was so upset and embarrass by whatever a male "coach" said to her she bowed her head and held her hands in her lap! I've never seen her react like that. So could not have been the best way to have addressed her? I explained what I saw / had happened to the women behind the desk. They apologized and appeared concerned. The response you'd expect from caring professionals. We agreed IF my daughter seemed affected that the coach would talk to her or apologize. BUT apparently the tag line "we do good things for kids" is a monetary slogan not a mission statement.
"That's not going to happen" ..... No common courtesy what so ever....I tried to catch my breathe and establish who was being so rude just after I thought an amicable decision had been made. But apparently he is the VP? Angrily, I replied "and this is your idea of customer service?" In response he said you don't have to be here at this gym and has my daughter removed from the class? Wow, what type of management does this? Dismisses a patrons parental concern and expels a child before the class ends??!!!! Anne Josephson claims to be an advocate for kids and women's rights lets see if she even bats an eye at this sort of behavior since she is a vicarious participant in all of her staffs actions?

My son loves going to JAG. It's our weekly activity. We have done another gym for a while but JAG is the best. I don't think we will be switching anytime soon. The coaches/staff are great and always know us by name, which is a big deal for his mother! I have never had a financial problem with them like others have said. I had to cancel for a month because we were traveling and didn't have problem. So many good things I could say!
