Located just two blocks from the MacArthur BART station in the bustling Temescal neighborhood of North Oakland, 4120 Martin Luther King Jr. Way is home to one of Oaklands upcoming fitness gyms, Jay's Training Grounds. At Jay's Training Grounds we offer a variety of classes including: Muay Thai, Boxing, Strength and Conditioning, and one on one personal training. The gym also includes separate men and womens bathrooms/locker rooms with showers, kept clean and sanitized daily for each guest. Whether you're here to learn a new fighting skill or simply weight train, you will always enjoy the atmosphere and experience Jay's Training Grounds has to offer. My Muay Thai journey started back in 2014, and from 2014–2018 I was fully committed to training until life hit me with school, work, and relationships that forced me to step away. During that time, I gained a lot of weight and felt like I lost a big part of myself. When I tried to come back, I found that the gym where I originally started had closed due to rising rent costs. I checked out a few gyms in Oakland, but none of them had that same community vibe where people truly enjoyed Muay Thai for the art and what it represents, I didn’t feel welcomed Honestly, I felt lost and thought I’d never find that feeling again.
I even considered driving far just to train because I missed Muay Thai so much. That all changed when I came across Coach Jay’s bio and saw that he had trained under the same coaches I had when I first started. I looked at the photos, saw the location, and instantly felt the same vibe I’d been searching for. From day one, Coach Jay was welcoming, helped me get my technique back, and I immediately felt the support from the entire team.
Since rejoining, I’ve gone from 260lbs to 210lbs, building muscle along the way thanks to the strength and conditioning classes (something I never had access to before). On top of that, I’ve been training in boxing, improving and learning a lot, while of course continuing with Muay Thai. I’ve even competed in a PKB and plan to keep competing in the near future.
For me, Muay Thai and boxing here have not only helped me get in shape but also pushed me to grow mentally, physically, and spiritually. The training is tough but motivating, and the team always makes you feel supported like family. Everyone trains hard, but there’s also real camaraderie and respect.
This gym has given me opportunities to challenge myself in ways I never imagined, from sharpening my technique to stepping into the ring. It’s more than just a gym, it’s a community that keeps you accountable and pushes you to become the best version of yourself. I’m incredibly grateful to Coach Jay and the gym for helping me return to what I love and for improving my health.
If you’re serious about training or even just curious to try something new, I can’t recommend Jay’s Training Grounds enough.

Joining Jay's is among the best decisions I've made in my life. Coach Jay is not only an amazing trainer and teacher, but also a wonderful, positive presence. This sets the tone for everyone present, and all who attend are friendly and great to work out with. I have learned so much about how to care for my body in the year I've been here thanks to Jay, and I go to and from the gym with a smile on my face. Jay’s Training Ground – Top-Tier Muay Thai in West Oakland
Jay’s Training Ground is the real deal for anyone serious about Muay Thai or just looking to level up their training. Jay is a fantastic coach—knowledgeable, patient, and able to push you while still making training accessible for all levels. His attention to detail and passion for the sport set this place apart.
The facility itself is well-equipped, clean, and has everything you need for solid training sessions. Plus, the location is super convenient—close to BART, making it easy to get to whether you're local or coming from another part of the Bay.
If you're looking for top-tier Muay Thai training in West Oakland with a coach who knows his stuff, Jay’s Training Ground is the spot. Highly recommend checking it out.

I am old enough to say ‘none of yo business,’ if you ask me. This is the first time in my life I tried any martial art or contact sport. I started in October 2023 and haven’t looked back. Taking this chance and training with Coach Jason Joseph in the community he creates at Jay’s Training Grounds is the best gift I have ever given my self. Physically, mentally, I am growing over the months and I see it show up in my life in and out of the gym. Confidence, consistency, focus, centeredness are just some of the mind set benefits being nurtured here at JTG’s that I practice throughout the day. I started at ground zero with no experience and that was the perfect place to start here. There are practitioners at all levels here but everyone here wants to get better. From Muay Thai to boxing to strength and conditioning, Coach Jay is paying attention to the details that you may not notice. Give it a try and let the experience speak for itself - is my suggestion.

There is no trainer like Coach Jay! I’ve never felt stronger or more capable. He takes pride in every single student and has built a unique community. I was really nervous to try Muay Thai and he, along with all of the members have been so helpful and welcoming. I’ve accomplished fitness goals I didn’t think were possible. You will never meet another trainer like Coach Jay! He is always watching you and ensuring you are getting the most of your workout. You’ll be surprised, even when his back is turned to you, he’s shouting out cues or encouraging you to push through. He’s watching your form and making sure you’re not compromising, impacting or putting pressure on any wrong areas.
Other perks of JTG is that it’s conveniently located near McArthur Bart. The gym also has clean showers and comes in handy when you need to rinse off.
Take a trial class and see for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

Now if this tells you anything I live in Sacramento and I come down to Oakland almost regularly on sundays just to train at this gym. If I lived in the Bay Area no doubt this would be where I would sign up. Coach J is one of the most authentic people I know he opens his door to not just his community to but the surrounding areas and anyone who with respect and a good work ethic want to come learn Muay Thai or just better their life position. They have a very very competitive team that treats one another as family and welcome everyone with some much positivity and support. In my opinion this gym is a rare find and so are the students and staff that tend to making this place run
