Absolutely love this gym & it’s 100x better than Equinox. It’s boutique like feels, that is always clean. The gym has a ton of personality. The only downside is their music can be a bit too loud, but it’s manageable

Obsessed. This gym is so nice and clean. The Lobby is a great amenity and all the rooms are huge and spread out (smells nice too!). Every workout here hit in the best way. But when checking in during trial here, one of the workers said "this is only meant for people who actually want to sign up"which offended me, not sure what that was supposed to mean... I liked the gym here but wasn't a fan of the parking or that interaction.

I've had Amazon boxes that had more charisma than the front staff here. I'll stick to my current gym that actually costs more, where the staff provides a better vibe.

Finally an update on being shirt less. I was so fed up gross sweaty dudes that really don’t belong being shirtless anyway. They never wipe their gross sweat off the machines. It’s always the guys with hella mid bodies that are shirtless. Giving 2 stars because despite this rule being posted atleast 5 dudes are shirtless and staff hasn’t done squat about it.

Staff…. Enforce your rules. Get these medicore body’s that are overcompensating for being small in certain areas to put on their shirts.

Obnoxiously loud music. Anxiety on 10. It’s ridiculous. No peace and you have to listen to their music (on level 10 until midnight)…noise canceling headphones won’t help you. Also, their music is not inclusive…no rap, no trap, just electronic pop nonstop like we are in some weird club. No quiet area. Not sure why the music can’t stop after 8pm. Member for a while now. Might change this.

This gym is AMAZING! From the design and atmosphere to the quality of the machines, everything here makes you want to work out. The experience was even better thanks to Akono, who gave us a tour. He was very professional, friendly, and shared a lot of interesting information about the gym.
Thank you again, Akono! I definitely recommend this place!

Exceptional, large gym, super clean, unbelievable sound system, great equipment, super HVAC, nice members, staff.

3+ requests to replace the yoga mats. They’re gouged, worn out, disease / germ traps.

This place is disgusting. First of all, they have predatory billing practices so beware of that! This is a spot where you'll want to read the fine print (like maybe bring to your lawyer to read over first) because they are hounds for taking advantage of their customers.

Second, while this place might look nice on the outside, it's grimy and disgusting on the inside. If you want athlete's foot, step right into their showers.

Good gyms seem to be a dime a dozen in Santa Monica so you're better off picking any other establishment than this one. YMCA is better than this gym.

I’ve been training with Gilles Berube at John Reed. He’s knowledgeable, experienced and fun to train with.
Before working out with him, I was not in shape. I’ve gotten lazy since Covid. He’s really is helping me to get energized and fit.
Working out with him and seeing results has motivated me to eat healthier, and to start to lose weight.
I almost don’t want to recommend him to anyone because he’ll get so busy he won’t have time to work with me!

Honestly a beautiful gym, it’s great that they have all different types of machine when you wanna target a specific muscle group for each workout. They have multiple unique aspects about the gym that make them standout to the main competitor down the street, Equinox, whose membership is a $100 more than John Reed’s, unwarrantedly. One downside I’d say about John Reed is most of the front desk staff not using their communication skills. They’ve almost never said “hi” or “welcome” when I walk in, they didn't even look at me.

Update: Changed this to five stars because I remember the difference my review made in how the front desk staff interacted with me afterwards. It didn't seem performative; most of them had an attitude shift once they were talked to. Reece was super engaging and conversational and even gave me tips for protein choices. His effort changed my entire perception of John Reed's customer service. Give that man a raise! Lol

First, I want to say how wonderful this gym is. The front desk personnel are lovely and helpful. My 3 star rating is based on the John Reed app which is highly dysfunctional and not user friendly. There appears to be many issues with the app and needs to be addressed. Signing up was a techno nightmare and process couldn’t be completed online. I had to go in to the gym to complete and the wonderful front end personnel also had issues with the app. Then I was charged twice for 6 personal training sessions. Please allocate the additional resources to fix the problems.

My trainer Nathan has totally shifted my attitude toward fitness and trainers in general. I’ve never had such a positive, encouraging trainer who I can tell genuinely wants me to love the process of getting in shape. He’s the sole reason I keep coming to the gym!! The equipment is clean, great, has good variety and I can always get an available machine. I was worried about how loud the music would be after reading the reviews…it’s just the volume of normal music so if you’re hesitating because of that, it’s fine. Glad I joined!

I got a herniated disc from working out with their Personal trainer. I’ve been going to their gym for two years and as soon as I hire their Personal Trainer I got a herniated disc. Do not get a trainer from them since they don’t vet their trainers and they just hire anyone who looks good as a trainer.

I came into John Reed for a free 3-day trial thought my erewhon membership, and it did not disappoint. The gym is extremely clean, HUGE, not overly crowded, and the front desk associates were beyond kind and helpful. Anna, who assisted me at the front desk when i checked in, was especially welcoming and kind. She gave me a tour of the facility and told me about the membership, and i especially appreciated that she was not overly sales pitch-y trying to get me to sign up for a membership since i came on a free trial. That alone makes me more interested in pursuing a monthly membership! It is a no brainer to join John reed over equinox, the price and facility can’t be beat. I will be returning!

Outstanding gym! I actually prefer it over equinox and the price is much better for the multi club. The equipment is top of the line and the classes alone are worth the membership. I’ve done the monthly twice now and really love it. 5 stars all the way! I still have another membership at a cheaper club but I dread going since it’s not as nice and always packed. This place on off hours is actually incredible you feel like you have the place to yourself after the rush hours. The gym is also very cleaned and maintained consistently. Staff are all very kind and friendly. Josh Kane Bike and Beats class was epic. The music was phenomenal and his energy is incredible. Don’t think I’ve had a cardio workout that intense in years. I highly recommend it if you are like me and need someone with high energy to really push you.

i Love this gym. it's super clean, aesthetically pleasing, and the staff are all amazing. there is a wide variety of classes, i have loved all the ones i have taken so far. there is a live DJ and many themed classes, which is fun. there is also a mobility class, which i was really excited to take. as a personal trainer, i realize how important and underemphasized mobility is, but even i admit i don't devote the time to it i should. the equipment is in perfect condition and well-maintained, and the space is huge and gorgeous. there is a ton of natural light, and the space is really pleasant and comfortable. it's also extremely affordable, which i was surprised by. i switched here from equinox and like this much better for like a third of the price. i'm Very happy i made the switch!

EDIT: reading the other reviews, most of the low reviews have to do with the music. people -- know what you're signing up for before you do! i personally Love the music, it's something that makes this gym unique, and i think it really sets the tone and energy for the entire space. i appreciate that John Reed doesn't change their mission. if you want your gym to be super quiet, maybe don't select the one that advertises "nightclub vibes".

IMO top gym in Santa Monica - newer weights/equipment than Equinox and a fraction of the cost! Solid array of free weights, machines, and cardio equipment + a CrossFit training space and turf for sled work and an outdoor area to take in some of that SoCal Vitamin D! Staff up front are always helpful and friendly, and the gym is as clean as a whistle. Smoothy bar and DJ are the cherry on top! And of course, like everywhere in Santa Monica, full of fit, beautiful people!

Can’t comment on the classes because they’re not my thing but seems like they have a large variety with lots going on everyday.

Only gripes: no sauna, could use more intense cardio equipment like a Jacob’s Ladder or curved self powered treadmill (assault style), as well as some of the influencer types seem to leave their weights and mats on the ground and then bounce - come on people!

Updating my review, still one star. Employees are rude, tried to borrow a weight not in use in a class and instructor yelled at me. Tried to workout in another area not in the way of anyone in a class and a DIFFERENT instructor gave me attitude they needed the space. I’ve been here an hour and the weight I wanted and the space I was attempting to use both were never used. Gym is too crowded at almost all times you’d want to go. Wouldn’t recommend unless you must go.

Also, club manager responds that the members should clean the equipment or to get an employee?? Why not just restrict shirtless workouts on benches and other equipment? Makes no sense.

They just let people walk around shirtless using equipment and not wiping anything down. It’s not hygienic and they don’t seem to care.

Outside of that, it’s better than the SM equinox. Better equipment, more space, newer. Cons are the lack of showers and steam room, and lack of parking but overall good. Also for the price point it’s better. Will update if people actually put shirts on.

Best new gym in LA... better machines and energy compared to Equinox. Most members take fitness seriously. Vegas party on the walls with a dj stand but I'm there early and have never seen a dj. Locker room clean. They offer hand towels. Cycle room, cross fit section, a machine for every angle of every muscle... friendly staff... great parking. I'm thrilled to have finally left equinox.

This is a big, well equipped gym that's in my neighborhood; The location near my home is why I have been a member for 2+ years, but I have considered ending my membership several times because management and staff are arrogant, rude, uncaring, and generally obnoxious. The desk staff has NEVER helped when I raised a concern. Today at around 7PM I was trying to work out on the upper floor, and the music was so loud it hurt my ears and it was impossible to have a conversation over the noise or listen to my own music on headphones. There was literally nowhere to go anywhere in the gym to escape the loud music. I asked the front desk if they could adjust the volume, and they rudely refused. There are many complaints posted about the volume when they have a DJ, and the manager responded with something like "music is in our DNA". It's just incredibly arrogant. Note that the DJ on duty was not that great and his music was pretty meh. But bad music played much too loud is just part of the problem with this place. The real problem is this gym's bad attitude toward their guests and their uncooperative responses from staff and unwillingness to make changes from management. This is why I have never been 100% satisfied with them. Management and staff are arrogant and unwilling to do anything when problems are reported. Instead they refer members to their email, but when you send an email, there is no response. Referring every concern to their app or to email is insulting to guests. They really need to work on being more accommodating to guests and stop worrying so much about creating an image of seeming cool.

Location is fantastic right on the promenade and the gym is clean. Locker rooms and showers are kept up. Classes and instructors are great.

Biggest issue is the for the last ~9+ months, at least 1-3 of the 10 treadmills is out of order. Between 6-8am, there is always someone waiting to use a treadmill.
7 working treadmills for a gym this size and for the monthly membership price is ridiculous.

I loved this gym. It’s super clean and new. Has great equipment and people are cool.

The main issue they have is the parking. The parking situation made me switch gyms it’s just too much of a hassle. It’s basically a perfect gym if don’t mind dealing with a busy parking garage and paying sometimes or rushing to get your lift done. They should just validate for you at least. I hate just dealing with parking garages that are full.

$150 a month for constantly broken machines, horrible attachments to choose from, machines constantly need oil/WD40, no one puts their shit up, they’re out of towels half the time, no sauna and members are constantly training their own clients at the gym even though that’s not allowed supposedly. John Reed Santa Monica is the epitome of overrated and under delivering. It’s clearly for people more interested in social hour than a quality gym hence the DJ. Cool idea in theory but horribly executed like most things in LA. Do not waste your money here.

I have literally never heard of a gym that does this. Nice big gym. Towel service, new equipments, flexible hours. Great. Biggest issue is how obnoxiously loud the music is. Even with noise cancelling earbuds, they would rattle in my ear because of the heavy thumping music volume at +11. It would be like my noise cancelling werent even on. Every section of the gym has a half dozen speakers installed in the ceiling. This does ruin the workout experience for me, especially when I just want a chill workout. It's like I'm at a circuit party. The music does not need to be that loud.

The pros: nice, aesthetically pleasing gym with lots of machines, free weights, barbells, etc. The locker rooms are decent with Dyson blow dryers provided.

The cons: the sheer amount of influencers with their tripods set up is overwhelming. I switched to John Reed from Equinox because the Santa Monica EQX is dirty and smells bad (especially for the price you pay for an EQX membership) but at least EQX had a clause in their membership contract prohibiting filming in the gym and locker rooms. Every time I went to John Reed, I had no way of avoiding being an NPC is some influencer’s video. I even saw these people taking mirror selfies and videos IN THE LOCKER ROOM where people are walking around nude! I found myself dreading going to the gym because of this so I cancelled my membership
The only towels they provide are small, dingy hand towels
The cleanliness of the locker rooms and bathrooms are subpar. Oftentimes the bathrooms smell bad.
The staff act like they’re being held prisoner. I had a staff member bemoan to me how she doesn’t get a commission for signing up new members. This gym is not cheap so they should seriously consider paying their staff better and having the ability to hire people who actually want to be there.
When I was a member, they did not have bosu or medicine balls or readily available resistance bands. You could check out resistance bands from the front desk, but have to leave a personal item in their possession as if you’re a thief paying $150 per month just to steal resistance bands. Bizarre.

I guess if you’re an influencer looking to film gym content, this is absolutely for you. For everyone else who is just trying to get a bloody workout in and go home, look somewhere else.

Placing this rating for management or the owner to take action please. The gym is actually very good and ticks a lot of boxes however the music scene is really upsetting and disturbing members.

There is no bias of the music from the DJ floor to the rest of the gym. There is ZERO need to blast music at this level, and is infuriating. It’s at a level where there is no option to listen to your own music or hear anyone asking you a question in the gym it’s unbearably loud.

I spoke to the “DJ” and he said “sorry he has no control over this, he is in a class”. This is complete inconsideration for everyone else using the gym that did not ELECT to be in this class.

Noise measurements taken at other areas of the gym upstairs and downstairs using a decibel reader is sustained from 96db to 106db!

To put this simply OSHA standards do not allow extended noise from machines and equipment to be over 90db for construction and 85db for general industry. This can contribute to hearing loss and damage impacting guests and employees.

Management states this is the environment they are trying to create. In actuality this is a Lawsuit waiting to happen from any off guest or one of your immediate employees. Your choice John Reed.

Horrible. I tried to buy a personal training package at the Santa Monica location, and I was ready to purchase the biggest training package available. Unfortunately, just getting the first appointment with a trainer was such a nightmare that I am now shopping around for a different gym. The assistant manager, Taylor, scheduled me with a trainer, but when I showed up the trainer was not available, and there was no record of my appointment. That manager was not available, so I tried to speak to the manager who was on duty, Albert, to ask him about rescheduling my trainer appointment, but Albert could NOT be bothered to help me, despite the fact that he seemed to be just hanging out in the lounge area scrolling on his phone. He didn't even get up out of his seat in the lounge area to talk to me. I waited over 20 minutes to meet with the trainer before being told my appointment did not exist, and spent another 20 minutes trying to deal with staff who couldn't be bothered to help me buy a training package. Total ineptitude from staff. They didn't even apologize. They just told me to reschedule on their app. When customers are there in person, staff should be prepared to help them in person. Rarely have I seen such an indifferent and uncaring attitude and such a total lack of professionalism from staff at a gym.

Finally a world class gym right here in Santa Monica, probably one of the most stunning and esthetically pleasing gyms with beautiful interiors, unique, state of the art German workout machines. It has 3 floors with many group activities like Yoga, Spinning, Bootcamps. This spot also has lots of natural light. Most gyms make you feel like you're in some sorta dungeon. Also very sweet and respectful staff. The cleaning crew is fantastic,.always ensuring the gym to be of that high standard. Also a huge shout out to one of the Managers - Albert. Self running gym…discrimination from staff
There is no such thing as customer service at this gym. The front desk staff is extremely lazy in every way imaginable. there’s no management.
Nobody’s ever heard of a manager leaving so early in the day .same as the assistant manager.
I think they know that there are a lot of problems and they just don’t want to deal with it. This is a self running gym which means you go, you check in, the front desk staff is busy on their phones & if they feel up to it, they might say hello or even help you over at the shake / drink shop.
The male employee was extremely condescending when I asked about buying a membership & for help enrolling in a class
It’s clear they discriminate against you if you are Caucasian & over 40. It’s not the right look for the gym apparently
I hope a much better gym replaces this
Such a shame. But I’d rather pay more and go somewhere that has actual staff

Popped in on Sunday and Tosheen gave me an incredible tour of this place. I told her then and I’ll say it again, I loved her passion for this club. I joined and did a bit of a lower body workout that day just to try out a few machines and get into the vibe of the place. I also dove right in and reserved two classes which I just did today! Pilates with the rockstar, Betsy, and Boost Club with the incredibly fit Michelle. The place was lit today with every type of body style and age group, which helped me fit in because I’m older than most and way outta shape. From the smoothie bar to the front desk and class instructors… if good vibes is what you’re giving, it’s what you’re getting back at JRF from what I can tell. I think the monthly price is great and classes are included. Quiet Zen room where I was able to take a call, showers and lockers, too. Love the location as well.

I called & got an abrasive guy on the phone so I decided to walk over in case they were busy. But by his attitude when he picked the phone and told me just to do everything online, they don't do gym memberships in person, I should've taken that as the first warning.

I walked in and unfortunately encountered the same man I spoke with on the phone, Drew.
He was hostile to me since I'm a woman.
I asked about a membership & he treated me as though I was interrupting whatever he was doing on his phone. He snapped at me and said just do it online and then asked him if he could help me. He said he doesn't do that & he turned his back & walked away from the front desk.
This happened 2 weeks ago. I did call and try to speak to a manager and they said she was not there so I'm assuming there's no form of order. they definitely need to brush up on the front desk staff and teach them how to speak to people. What a shame :/

Great gym - never crowded, more than enough workout areas. Very (very) clean, and the operating hours can't be beat (5am, - 12am daily).

However, you're in a "scene" - many filmed workouts and photoshoots (there are professional film crews onsite every day!). Lots of men working out with no shirts on (filming themselves). It's a scene, and it's un-policed (you will be on camera in some video at some point, and management either is not on top of it, or whatever).

But - people are polite - they let you work in, they clean up after themselves, there's very little "sitting on a machine and looking at instagram". Everyone seems to be there to workout - but - again - you will be on video, so your milage may vary.

I cancelled my membership in person, but they continued to charge me for the following 5 months. When I tried to rectify and speak with the club manager, they said I needed to send an email, which was never communicated to me.

The gym itself is fine (and I enjoyed the classes), but I can't understand folks who operate a business model predicated on taking advantage of their customers. For this reason I'd never recommend it!

Woooow!!!!❤️

THIEVES WORK HERE!! Stolen items from my locker three months ago, and nobody has done anything
I told the front desk staff they told me to email the manager which I did and nothing happened
I’m done with this place I came in to try it out that one time and my stuff got stolen and there was some girl there with her boyfriend videotaping which made me feel very uncomfortable
I said something and they said “deal with it & if you don’t like it, go to the regular gym with regular people”

Great equipment, great employees. Only reason it's not a 5 is they bring in a DJ at random hours (3pm, 7am, etc) and they turn the music up SO LOUD no one can hear their own music. LOOK AROUND...everyone has headphones or earbuds. It completely ruins your workout on a daily basis. Many people have complained...easy fix

Several people complained about the djs volume, but staff ignored everyone. It’s a problem when your ear drum is about to pop and even after ear buds are in your ears, the volume is so loud it ruins your flow of working out. It’s not ‘cool’ to be deaf or to ruin everyone’s workout! It doesn’t need to be that loud. Also, they promised a sauna soon, but it’s been 8 months and no sauna! If you ask the staff they look confused and have no idea.

Also, a sauna was promised eventually and they stated the permits were cleared, so why still no sauna??

Need more cardio equipment, any busy time you’re sitting there waiting awhile.. and also a huge set back locking that extra space in the classroom in between classes. Even 24hr allows people to use them in between the classes and without that room limits it really the floor space entirely, very poor move. Locking it 30 min prior would be a better idea for prep.. it’s just a class, why lock everyone out of all the weights n floor space, instead you have to fight for any floor space in between equipment or the sledder.. not cool

Good gym. Don’t buy in to the whole club music/DJ thing. 99% are wearing noise cancelling headphones and when they turn up the music, everyone gets pissed off. It’s more of an annoyance than anything. Come early and it’s not as bad. They don’t really observe the customer’s preference on things like this. Locker sizes are two small so people wanting to shower and go to work are frustrated and there aren’t enough toilets for everyone so you seem people constantly frustrated and talking about the waste of time in the locker room waiting for a toilet.

Really love this gym. The equipment is great, everything is always in working condition. It's clean and the aesthetics are great.

But there is one major problem, the influencing production is out of control. I'm all for content creating, but when you have multiple cameras, lighting, a director and a script with a bunch of guys with their shirts off, then you should be shooting it at either A) a time where no one is there or B) work with corporate to schedule a time when the gym is closed.

I'm trying to work out, not be caught in the background of some video I DIDN'T AGREE TO BE IN.

If you want to prop your phone camera up and video yourself working out, sure go right ahead. But if you need a whole film crew, then you need to book the gym like any other film production would do.

Corporate, you realllllyyyy need to lock this down or you're going to isolate John Reed to a very small demographic. Cause no one is going to continue to put up with this.

This is the best gym that I have ever been to and although it is literally killing me that I am moving out of LA for work, I will make reasons to come back and visit this gym again.

The atmosphere is perfect (people actually workout instead of just sitting around like some places), machines are beautiful/feels great to use, and most of all, the location is prime for a gym. I can go to the beach, go to brunch on promenade, or go for a run along the boardwalk after/before a workout.

Staff here are also amazing. Very helpful and very kind. i usually go to the gym at 5am in the morning and Thein, a front desk staff, is always there to greet the gym goers at the break of day with a smile. The yoga instructor here is also very knowledgeable and helpful in her class.

Again, I cannot thank the staff here enough for being amazing and making my what seems like a short membership time an amazing experience. Eventhough work is moving me to somewhere far far away, I will definitely make excuses to come visit LA just for this gym.

My favorite gym in LA besides Heimat.
The selection of machines is stellar.
Highlights include:
- Standing Weighted Calf Raise Machine
- Hacksquat
- Seated Leg Curl Machine

You are never weighting for the squat racks.
They have 2-3 racks upstairs and 3 racks downstairs.

You can also do squats on the ground floor.

People are really nice and helpful here too, and surprisingly it’s almost never crowded.

Only downside: no sauna (yet) and no towel service (to be expected at this price point)

Phenomenal gym. For weightlifting nerds the equipment they have is made by a German brand called Gym80. They’re basically the Rolls Royce of weightlifting equipment. Only complaints are music is way too loud so you need some good noise cancelling headphones and there aren’t any boxes for box jumps. They have just about everything else.

Update: Been coming here for about 3 mos now. Got some noise canceling headphones so the loud music is no longer an issue. They seemed to have fixed their gym towel shortage problem. The only thing I’d suggest now is getting shower towels to make showering there more realistic.

2nd Update: This gym is the best gym I’ve been to in my 20 yrs of lifting. Thein at the front desk is AWESOME! She is always in good spirits and greeting everyone.

Updating the review because the manager is part of the scam - they had an offer when I signed up (get your day pass credited if you sign up the same day). Have them promising multiple times to credit me, then they do a "rug pull" and start gaslighting. Zero professionalism with this gym. I've seen multiple people complaining at the front-desk about locker room theft and issues, they simply do not care ("they'll say send an e-mail then no one cares or does anything"). Sign-up at your own risk and you'll see the problems. Went from a 5-stars experience to realizing it's a 1-star gym with zero care. Their billing is incorrect. Additionally, no one cares about the showers - no soap, no shampoo, multiple broken doors.

They mopped the squat area once and pretty much showed they didn't really care with a "sorry man" not really understanding you shouldn't mop and make wet a wooden platform from the squat area when the gym is open.

Basics man, basics. Went from being a huge fan of this gym to writing this review and probably filing chargebacks on my credit card.

I recently joined after canceling my Equinox membership of 10 years. The gym is huge and has great equipment. There are a few corners that have been cut though. There are no full size bath towels and there are no locker room attendants. Since people can’t seem to dispose of their small work out towels (provided by John Reed) properly there are small towels all over the men’s locker room. I get the sense that the locker room is only cleaned once or twice a day. Also there are no seat cover protectors for the toilets. All in all it’s a very nice gym and has a great design. I plan on not using the locker room and showering at home.

John Reed Santa Monica is an extremely well appointed 3 story gym. The layout is awesome and the open format allows tons of space to workout and not feel cramped on space. The Gym80 equipment is by far the best equipment on the market. John Reed is a true vibe! From the artwork and unique flair, to the excellent up tempo music, it’s truly an energizing place to workout. JR is on the Santa Monica promenade very close proximity to Santa Monica pier. Not sure why there are so many 1 star reviews. Possibly due to a lack of amenities (sauna, steam room, etc)? As someone who takes fitness seriously, this gym deserves 5 stars if you don’t care about amenities ; it’s the best gym in Santa Monica. Lots of equipment, and it’s not your average commercial gym. The equipment is different from most gyms (I believe the machines are from Germany). The gym is well-maintained and very clean (workers are constantly wiping equipment, washing floors, etc).

So if you don’t care about amenities, you’ll love this gym.

I was visiting LA this past week and was looking forward to working out at the gym in Santa Monica as well as the LA facility. I am a member of John Reed Fitness here in Dallas where I live, and love it. I went for a morning workout and my experience did not disappoint. I knew they did not supply bath towels (as realistically no gym does) so I took my own from my hotel, so that was no big deal. Upon entering I was greeted with a big smile by Thein (sp) I told her I was visiting, and she proceeded to say, "Welcome, come on in and enjoy your workout!". I had an awesome and invigorating workout and a truly First Class experience. The equipment and facilities were extremely clean and the showers and locker rooms pristine. I topped off my workout with a delicious protein smoothie from their juice bar! Stephanie is a very knowlegable mixologist and knows her stuff. She suggested the perfect smoothie! I would highly recommend this gym, as well as any of the John Reed Fitness Centers. I can't wait to visit their European gyms in the upcoming years when I am traveling abroad.

Love the gym but I do have some gripes. For one, they said they’d have a sauna and they don’t, so that’s a huge deal for me at least because I moved from Golds to this gym. They don’t have larger towels in the shower and the parking is really annoying. Noway you can fit a solid workout and shower in under 90 minutes. I’d easily add another star if the sauna was built. Possibly will leave the gym if they don’t put that in soon.

The gym, equipment, and aesthetics are top tier. However, the customer service is not. The front desk staff are rude and act like you are inconveniencing them by asking questions or for help. When I came in to sign up, I was not offered a tour which surprised me. There are known issues with the app which create a major headache when trying to access the gym. it’s awk to be the fattest person there, everybody looks like models. I guess that could be a great motivator for some! Cardio machines ride smoothly like butter. I couldn’t get some of the leg machines to work but I am sure it’s user error. The class descriptions aside from cycling aren’t very clear so I haven’t gone to any

I think the membership is reasonable for the space and location.

Wish list: a bike rack inside because bikes get stolen on the Promenade within seconds. The location is perfect for cycling there. A cardio “cinema” (Gold’s has it and it’s amazing), steam room (even at extra cost).

Gripe: the trainer who gave me the tour said there would be barre classes but there aren’t 😡. I have bad knees so booty bands or dance classes would be nice

I recently joined after being at Equinox, and I've got to say it's an incredible gym. It's nearly half of what I was previously paying - and the gym is much nicer in my opinion.

Pros:
- not packed like some other higher end gyms (unless you're coming between 5-7pm)
- very nice equipment, more of 1 machine so less wait times
- great staff
- good playlist, live DJ sometimes
- great vibe and ambiance
- close to the beach, nice to walk over afterwards
- on the SM promenade

Cons:
- Always a few dudes with a full on camera and tri-pod set ups, and generally loud and obnoxious. Not a huge con, but it's a bit cringey when you have a group of guys filming tiktoks next to you and taking up a machine/bench/rack.
- no sauna/steam room
- no towels if you want to shower

None of these cons are deal breakers and I definitely think the pros outweigh the cons, but just some things to consider. I think it's a great value, you'll be hard pressed finding a nice gym like this for the same price.

Why I can’t give 5 stars are for these reasons alone: no shower towels - I was offered 6 hand towels though when I needed to shower 🥲; no sauna nor steam room and SO MUCH real estate; NO seat covers for the toilet - need I say more. Was a member of this gym - Left a previous yelp review which they had taken down. Maybe because I was letting every person that signs up know that there is no women's & mens locker room separation.

The business claims there is and will give you a tour as there is one but that is misleading and false as anyone can walk into the women's restroom regardless of their anatomy. Major safety violation.

They also do not provide a neutral restroom for those who do not align with a women's or mens changing room space but claim to be an inclusive business.

Just joined this gym a couple of weeks ago. I left equinox to save a bit of money so that is my comparison. So far there are some pros and a few cons.

THE PROS
- THE GYM is very clean with lots of space and tons of machines. You won't be waiting to use any thing.
-THE CLASSES are awesome and they go all morning long which is perfect for my schedule. This is the only gym outside of equinox that I could find that has classes at 9, 10, and 11 (that are not just yoga ..boring)
-The instructors are great and caring as well
- It's nice that you can cancel at any time.

THE CONS
-PARKING is a bit of a pain. Expect to spend at least 10 minutes walking to and from your car. Not a big deal if you need the exercise but it is if you have a limited time for a workout. Not a problem if you live nearby and can walk/bike.
-NO TOWEL SERVICE. This one is a bit annoying. They have small hand towels at the front desk but it seems like you have to know someone who knows someone to get one. I'm used to towels being available throughout the gym so I don't understand why they are only at the front desk on a limited basis. Also why not have towels in the locker room for showers..or at least put a few of the hand towels in there? If you are already washing hand towels, why not wash a few shower towels as well?
- NO SAUNA. I was really disappointed that this gym has no sauna or steam room. They have tons of space. If you are going for a luxury gym vibe, you really need to have some more amenities. Please please please put a sauna in :) This is probably the biggest downer for this gym.

Only 3 stars for parking. I don’t go to gym 5x/6x a week but I usually stay longer than 2 hours, which means every time I come here I pay $3.5-$5 just for parking, you guys can definitely do better by validating parking for up to 2 hours. John Reed Santa Monica- Let’s talk about it.

The actual gym: The gym consists of 3 floors with a truly modern aesthetic. The “Gym80” equipment is all brand new and everything is ridiculously nice. You can tell there was a large sum of time that went in to mastering every component and corner of this complex. Even the lighting is angled specifically to represent a modern vibe alongside the interior landscaping and plants. They’re open until midnight as well which is an absolute game changer.

The staff: Nate, Dillon, Vee, Joelle and Daniel are the the people I have met so far. Joining a new gym isn’t the easiest thing to do and it is critical to understand how the staff treats their guests. All 5 of these people have been outstanding in every way. “Hey welcome in” “Hey can I get you a towel” “What’s up man what are you training today?” “How was your day?” Above and beyond. With most gyms in LA you’ll be lucky if a staff member makes eye contact with you. You can tell these folks have been hand picked.

The amenities: Some of the reviews talk about how there isn’t a sauna. Let’s touch on this. The membership is $130 a month, you have 3 floors of equipment, power racks, a whole wall of dumbbells, free workout classes, an outdoor section, a literal live DJ, luxurious hand soap and hand cream alongside stellar staff. You are also about a 24 second walk to Santa Monica beach and it is located downtown Santa Monica. I genuinely don’t know how they keep the price for a membership so low. $250 is probably more reasonable for something like this. So no, there is no sauna. Would it be nice? Sure but again- The gym costs $130/month. What you’re getting for that is absolutely ridiculous. Also, there is a Chipotle right next door. Also, all the cardio equipment charges your phone wirelessly.

The first weekend was free which is probably where some of the sub-par reviews come from complaining about the sweaty shirtless people. After that weekend, I have met so many down to earth people. You could probably strike a conversation with 98% of the members and gain a positive interaction.

Parking validation would be absolutely clutch but all parking structures surround the complex are free for the first 90 minutes then only like $2 if you surpass that/hour.

If you live within a 15 mile radius amongst the semi circle of this facility, then I highly recommend it.

Regrettably, my friend and I were unable to visit this gym due to the excessively high price of a day pass – $50. Despite our excitement about the gym's appealing marketing and positive reputation, we couldn't justify paying such a steep fee to try it out. I hope that the gym owner recognizes the potential in offering more affordable or complimentary options, because we still really are interested in joining the gym. Lowering the price of a guest pass would undoubtedly attract more individuals and foster a welcoming environment for anybody else interested in joining this new gym.

I really wanted to love this place but there were too many cons I canceled after my first workout. I’ve been an equinox member for almost a decade now I love the simplicity and country club feel of some of their locations and their locker rooms are on point. The parking not being validated here is completely unacceptable you’re charging $130.00 a month for a membership with no locker room amenities how do you not have a sauna or a steam room charging over $100! Horrible cardio equipment a dark workout floor that looks like a dungeon the workout floor is great if you can see why is it so dark for the IG influencers to get quality pictures and videos! The matrix cardio equipment is absolutely junk in here I ran on the treadmill it couldn’t keep up with me and to make matters worse I was running looking out a dirty window with people staring so hard at me outside as I ran what horrible placement for the cardio machines I don’t want to be stared at by random people walking by it’s not enduring that matrix treadmill it’s something you’d find in a planet fitness too and all this jungle theme aesthetics is just way too much felt like I was in a rainforest downstairs and all the narrow stairs and levels someone almost knocked me over on the stairs trying to walk next to their friends smh. Don’t get me started with the music in here whose bright idea was it to blast music this loud so loud that you ear drums could bleed out from all the intense bass I mean the windows were shaking like it was an earthquake happening it was beyond annoying to say the least and how are you going to have a zen room with a DJ blasting music like this constantly the only great thing is the staff they were solid people with wealth and money don’t want all the theatrics and craziness this place definitely isn’t for everyone!

Absolutely LOVE this new location. It’s spacious, bright, the decor is appealing not too overwhelming, great equipment! And to give us a deal for only $20 to upgrade for TWO locations. Although it’s only been one week, over all very happy with this location. Really looking forward to the next John reed to open!

Really disappointed in the John Reed fitness company. I’ve never been to one so i called the front desk asking for a one day pass to come try it out and see if I wanted to become a member. The only option they gave me was a $50 day pass which is absolutely ridiculous for a gym that doesn’t even have amenities. Also, the front desk women I spoke to was incredibly rude. Not a great way to start building your brand with the community…

This gym vibe is new to me: Music at a level 9 and the bass is pumping so if you get a work call your cover is blown. No, there are no locker room amenities, but since I live so close by, it’s not a deal breaker. What’s great to see is how diverse the clientele is here. I never knew so much diversity existed on this side of town.

The whole working out without a shirt thing is pretty gross. And although they offer workout towels, people are laying their sweaty backs on the benches. Which for this new gym is now the culture.

The bottom floor is the main floor with free weights and plate loaded Hammer Strength style machines. The locker rooms are labeled John and Jane, so be alert! Not sure if this is out of gender neutral reasons or not.

Shout out to the very friendly staff.

I guess at some point in the future, water will be sold somewhere?

The picture I posted is of the quiet room, where you can take a break from the night club noise for a minute.

If you want to check out this gym before deciding to spend $130+ a month, it's $50 to go once, confirmed via phone. Aren't first-time tours and trial visits for people interested in joining supposed to be free? Weird business strategy

Really want to give it 5 stars

Love every John Reed gym (even the ones overseas), and this one might be my favorite yet. Layout is very open so it’s not crowded, plenty of natural light, and has all the workout equipment you need. However, it does not have a steam room, sauna, towel service for showering, or validated parking. The parking garages nearby offer 90 minutes free but it’s tough to fit a workout and shower at the gym so I usually end up paying $2.00 or $3.50 each time to park. I believe if it had these features and 2 hour parking validation it would give Equinox a run for its money. Overall it’s one of my favorite gyms and has a great social aspect to it as well! Another killer job by John Reed.
