I have been to several LA fitnesses in the greater Los Angeles area and this is by far the worst. For the 5 months I have been coming here there is an obvious social hierarchy system where trainers and workers give attitude. As a woman I did not feel comfortable at this location. My biggest complaint is the trainers hogging the attachments. They leave the main floor with the grip-less dirty handle and keep the pristine good grip attachments in their "private training area". and don't even try to ask for an attachment because you will be met with nothing but hostility! Shame on you! I have moved to planet fitness. Come to this location if you want to fight over an attachment and look at dust in the restroom.

I’ve had LA fitness since 2012. They bought out Bally Total fitness and I’ve been paying $10 a month for years. Less expensive than all the other places and just as much amenities if you pick the right club.

We enjoy going to this LA Fitness location in Long Beach California. The staff really keeps the workout area clean. It is bright and enjoyable to work out here. The basketball court is always full and we like the juice bar because it stays open late. We wish that the members would be more considerate and put all the weights and equipment back in the correct location. Staff could ask them to be mindful and help out.

I signed up for LA Fitness personal training and was told the first four sessions were free and I had five business days to cancel with no penalty. During my very first 30-minute session with trainer Nikolai, I told him I hadn’t squatted in about a year. While using a type of squat machine, I told him I felt like I couldn’t physically continue because he was having me bottom out; something that should not have been done, especially since I was no longer squatting in general and he never tested my range of motion. He insisted I keep going, which caused a lower back strain. In addition, I did not receive the promised logging/tracker book or my personal macronutrient recommendations during this first program session. I only had my body measurements taken, and I didn’t even receive those myself because Ernesto said he had to write them elsewhere at the time since I was not given the book.

I informed Ernesto (training program manager) later, the same day that I wanted to cancel. He did not respond, and when I followed up the next day, he told me he would cancel it on Monday, August 4, but did not. On Tuesday, August 5, I spoke with Daniel, who told me Ernesto was canceling “right then” but also tried to tell me I would still be charged for the remaining two months. I had to explain that I was in my 5-day cancellation window.

On August 6, Janice (manager) confirmed in writing that my full $293 refund was processed. On August 7, only $232 was returned. On August 8, Janice went back on her word, claimed it was prorated, and still showed no acknowledgment of the injury or poor handling of my case, despite me pointing it out multiple times.

No one involved; Ernesto, Daniel, Janice, or Nikolai, ever expressed concern for my injury or took responsibility for the situation. This is not how a fitness facility should treat members who trusted them with their health.

With that state, it’s clear they don’t care about their clients but view clients as numbers.

I’ve been to multiple gyms, but my experience at this LA Fitness location was by far the most disappointing. First off, the staff seems completely disinterested. Most of the time, they’re either chatting among themselves or glued to their phones. When I asked for help with equipment or had questions about my membership, I got vague, unhelpful answers and a general attitude like I was bothering them.

As for cleanliness—it’s honestly unacceptable. The locker rooms smell bad, the floors are constantly dirty, and the showers are worse than a gas station bathroom. Equipment is often left sweaty and rarely wiped down. I’ve seen overflowing trash cans, dirty towels left around, and broken machines that stay out of order for weeks.

Unprofessional and Customer-Unfriendly Practices

I’ve been a loyal LA Fitness member since 2016, but after my recent experience, I decided to cancel both of my memberships. The way they treat long-term customers is incredibly frustrating and feels like a sales scam.

I brought a guest to the gym, only to be told I needed a guest pass. They informed me that it would cost $30 for a one-time pass plus $25 per month, which would bring my total cost to almost $60 a month. Alternatively, they offered me a new membership at $39/month with unlimited guest passes, but that meant canceling my current membership and starting again with initiation fees. The whole setup felt like a tactic to squeeze more money out of customers instead of providing reasonable solutions.

When I called corporate, I spoke with Victor, hoping they might offer some kind of accommodation for a customer of nearly a decade. Instead, he told me that if I wanted a guest pass, I’d have to pay the additional fees — no effort to help, no compromise, just “that’s what you have to pay.”

I’m exhausted by LA Fitness’s lack of professionalism and their apparent focus on profit over customer satisfaction. Their practices feel like they are designed to pressure members into paying more. After this experience, I cancelled both memberships. Long-term members and new members should be treated with respect, not manipulated for extra fees.

Save yourself the hassle — there are plenty of other gyms that value their customers.

This gym has way too many people using too few machines with NO rules of etiquette posted. In fact, I was told that anyone can stay at a machine or weights as long as they want...doing emails, talking, whatever. These rude people leave towels or clothes on machines to come back after they go to another machine.

Be prepared for long waits, frustration, ill manners, bullying, etc. Staff is no help.!

LA Fitness claims a policy of no bags on the floor...a lie. It is not enforced and dangerous.

Corporate is no help.

I started a membership today with Giovanni in fitness sales. Gio added a $5/ month charge for a health app service that I didn’t want, and got visibly frustrated when I asked him what it was. He claimed he was getting me “the best bang for my buck.” Again got frustrated when I asked him to show me the total with the service removed. I ultimately decided to just let it go as Gio was doing a very poor job communicating and it wasn’t getting anywhere. Still have an extra $5 per month charge for a service I’m not going to use…

Today, I went to this location and requested a one day pass. While visiting Long Beach, I wanted to attend a class with a family member. I was greeted by manager Geo Metro. He requested my identification card in order to provide the pass. I gave him my military ID, he refused to accept it. He requested my California Drivers license. I provided it to him, he then informed me that the policy was for him to keep it in his possession while I attended the class. I didn't feel comfortable with him keeping my my identification with the rise of identity theft! When I returned he informed me that I was already a member and that my account was on hold per my request, which I knew. He appeared to be annoyed. Perhaps because he couldn't make a sale! At any rate I contacted Joshua at the Irvine location. He explained that keeping an individuals identification in possession while on property is not the policy of LA Fitness. Geo Metro violated not only my privacy but also the policy of LA Fitness. Very unprofessional behavior!

I've been a member for a few weeks now. I can only speak to the location in LB. I really like it. Front staff are respectful and happy to help. There are so many machines, I've never seen anyone wait more than a few minutes.

It's pretty clean, especially the floors and equipment. If you watch, staff are constantly on the floor cleaning. I can't find a 35lb plate to save my life, but other than that, the weights, dumbells, and barbells are in good shape.

The only reason for a loss in one star is due to the water fountains needing to be replaced and updated to fill bottles, the mens restrooms/lockerroom needing attention, and the lack of 35lb plates.

Great classes (especially Zumba!). I’m also making this review to detail the lack of security in the parking lot. This evening, I witnessed a van pull up and steal someone’s catalytic converter (from a Prius).

There’s no security, so if you have a Prius (or other targeted car) be sure to park your car in the middle aisle and closer to the gym. And be sure to have a cage for your converter. LA Fitness should hire security to prevent this kind of thing.

I came in for a training session with Krystal and I was absolutely in awe with her wisdom and guidance. She followed all covid protocol’s and allowed me to go at my own pace, all while still teaching me new exercises. I consider myself pretty well groomed in physical fitness but today I was enlightened and shown I can reach new plateaus! This will definitely be my permanent gym! First impression was it may be a nice location.. just here visiting in the area (military) and thought to try out the “complimentary” visit pass. When asked if I was interested in becoming a member, I stated I wasn’t sure if we there was an LA fitness in our area. The gentleman replied that if we weren’t interested then they wouldn’t honor the complimentary pass?! Nothing on the website states that you have to be interested in joining to get the complimentary pass. Last month, I went to the Long Beach location on Bellflower to ask about a membership. I got the typical salesman routine but eventually they gave me the membership costs. I asked if they had a trial membership so I could check out the place (wasn't offered) and they said they would email it to me. After a few days and no email, I called back and spoke with the manager (I didn't ask for him) and he said he would email it to me. After a few more days and no email trial, I went back into the facility and a third person said they would email the trial pass...Finally got it.

Two weeks after my trial membership completed I got a call from the sale person offering me a "special deal" but he would get back to me with the details. As you can guess I never heard from him.

At this point I had already signed up for another gym because the process with them was so long, but I wanted to see how long their incompetence would continue. I called again and spoke with Eric the manager and said he would check with the original Sales Person about the "special deal" and he would call me back. Guess what? He didn't called me back either. I called him back one more time because now I was just curios to learn how many incompetent people were at this one location. When I spoke to the manager he mumbled something about talking with the salesperson and proceeded to give me the same membership costs that can be found on their website! Ironically if LA Fitness just had one set price and no sales people and no "special deals" I probably would have signed up for a membership the first time. It seems outdated to still have those used car salesman conversations.

Was in town this past Monday and wanted to get my normal session in and found this gym!

First off, my guy Eric helped me through the one day process which was a breeze! Great equipment and a great workout staff from what I’ve seen.

Whenever I’m in town I’ll make sure to come back to this location in Long Beach 🏖

A business that lures people in with the idea of self improvement but is in reality a system to sign people up into almost impossible to cancel contracts. The gym inside is only a facade to help hide the disgusting business practices that flow through this building.
