I went around 5:30 and it was BUSY, which I don't mind. The reason for the 4 stars was because there were a lot of machines that were down for servicing. I lift on machines and there were at least 5 (all different muscle focus) that were down for service. Other than that I love this gym.

This review is not for the gym as a whole but for the yoga classes -

It's become apparent that LA Fitness will hire any weirdo off the street that calls themselves a yoga instructor. I was prepared to lower the bar because it's a gym class but this was awful on multiple levels. Zero structure in a sequence that appeared to be thrown together to guarantee injury, transitions that made no sense, cueing that was akin to nails on a chalkboard, and "savasana" that the instructor talked through. On top of all of that, this instructor took it upon herself to physically stand right over me without asking for consent to perform adjustments. I had to tell her not to touch me, and she got borderline offended. THIS IS NOT APPROPRIATE AT ALL.

I had a terrible experience with LA Fitness. I signed up for their Pilates class pre-sale. Before the grand opening, I went to the LA Fitness front desk and specifically asked to freeze my Pilates account due to illness. Their staff told me “No need to freeze — you won’t be charged as long as you don’t book classes.” That was completely false. They went ahead and charged me anyway for months.

When I brought it up, they admitted confusion and refunded only the second charge as a “courtesy“, but arrogantly refused to refund the first — even while admitting I was misinformed by their own staff.

To make matters worse, they talked down to me as if I don’t understand how a membership works. I’ve been a member at places like Orange Theory and other gyms, and I’ve never been treated this disrespectfully. I know a membership is for access— that’s exactly why I went in person to freeze it, but they failed to do so and I had to pay for access to nothing.

Instead of taking responsibility, LA Fitness made me pay for their staff’s mistake and dismissed my concerns.

I will not recommend this place and actually my family and friends will be quitting LA Fitness and never using them again.

Paid for a membership with guest privileges, first and last month up front. Came to check in without a guest, luckily. Was told I don't have any guest privileges and if I want, he (front desk check-in) can get me going with an additional $9.99. I do love LA but they need to work on cleaning up the floors of the workout room. I do a lot of classes and the wood floors. Sometimes make me question everything else. 2/24/24-They still need to put more effort into the group fitness rooms. I bounce between Escondido and San Marcos. AND BOTH group fitness rooms could use more sanitization and for crying out loud, push a broom around that room. The hair, dust, skin particles. Yuck!!!

I've been a member of the LA Fitness chain for about 12 years now. Visiting all the LA clubs in north County, San Marcos to me is the absolute best one as of late. Six days a week I workout at this club. The new Member Service Manager (Rachel) is a rock star. Always helpful and professional, extremity efficient with the club. Very easy to approach and talk to, not so much with the previous manager. Rachel is like a breath of fresh air and is extremely helpful it seems with all of the members as many of my Gym pals think the same of her. Robert in sales is a awesome person, always busy but not too busy to assist any member. He has a personality that is very warm and motivating. Jessica (MT), constantly training a client every time I go to that gym, one way to determine trainers that are really good is to observe the frequency of training sessions that they do. She is always training a client one after another, every day. Plus she is happy to answer or help with any training or exercise question you may have. She knows her stuff and seems to have a great personality to motivate clients and make things fun as well. This gym is always clean, the equipment is great and plentiful. When things need to be fixed, Rachel is on it. This is the gym I would recommend to anyone who likes LA Fitness.

I’ve been going to this gym for 10 years, the main reason for the kids club for my kids. The new manager for no reason fired all the kids club employees, the best, most caring ladies that have been working there for over 10 years for no reason. How is that possible? I hope HR does something about this. You can’t just fire people for no reason. This job has been their lives and their source of income, gone for no reason. I know many other parents are frustrated about this because now our kids are crying, having accidents, because they are not used to a whole crew of strangers taking care of them, not to mention they don’t have any experience at child care.

Dana has been an absolute staple at this gym’s kids klub. She is truly amazing with both parents and kids of all ages. She has 14 years of experience working with children. She puts the parents’ concerns and anxieties as ease so they can enjoy a workout. Today (4/21/25) I was DEVASTATED to learn Dana and all previous childcare staff was fired by new manager Kimberly. When I showed up today at 8am, there was no one at the front desk or at kids klub. We waited around for 20 min until FINALLY a front desk worker showed up along with a janitor to open the kids klub. The JANITOR watched the kids because the designated childcare worker was not there on time!!! This is unacceptable and would have never happened if Dana was here. Bring back Dana!!

I have been coming to this location for over two years now and put my daughter in the childcare since she was four months old. As a first time, mom nervous to put her daughter in the hands of other people, DANA, who was working there full-time was absolutely amazing and my daughter loved her. UNFORTUNATELY the new manager, KIMBERLY, came in and Within a few weeks of being there decided that all of the people working in the childcare we’re not a good fit and fired them now has hired young workers who seem to have never worked with kids before that are not great at all. The first day after Dana had been fired I took my eight month old daughter, and after picking her up, I noticed she had a dirty diaper that she had been sitting in for I don’t know how long but Dana would always call me right away to come change her. I have spoken to other parents who are also upset with the Situation and our Considering other gyms. The only reason I attend this gym is because they have a daycare and because my daughter absolutely loved the childcare worker , other than that the gym isn’t great. And The only thing this new manager has managed to do is make the gym worse.

My son was getting hit by another child in front of the girl in charge and she doesn't do nothing. Worried only for one kid . They are no capable to take care of others kids around. I am not one to write a bad review, however my recent experience with the management at LA Fitness San Marcos was absolutely horrible.
I have two children at the kids club, they’ve been coming here for years. The women who have worked there in the mornings have recently been fired under reasons I cannot understand. They’ve always made me feel safe and comfortable leaving my children under their care and my kids grew very fond of them. With their dismissal, two new hires have started working there. I understand everyone starts off new however, I deeply feel that they were not properly trained and lack basic childcare skills. After I dropped off my kids, I decided to check in on them through the window and was shocked by what I saw. The two caretakers both had their backs turned on the rest of the kids focusing on the babies they were holding. One of my kids was hit on the head by a ball that the older kids were rough playing with while my son was being repeatedly hit in the face by another child. Despite their crying, they were completely neglected by the workers. I decided to take my kids home as they were clearly not being taken care of properly. As I was leaving, my daughter told me she forgot her doll so we headed back and I went inside simply to grab her toy and leave. When I turned back around the manager, Kimberly Eby, had her phone pointed towards me and then my children! She was either taking a video or photos of them as her flash was on. She told me in a very aggressive manner that I wasn’t allowed in there and if I needed something I had to let her know specifically. In that moment I was filled with anger because she was recording/photographing my children without any consent or reason. I decided not to respond and just grab my children and get out of there as fast as possible. I was furious that she would even think of recording me and my toddlers. I’ve been inside the kids club countless times without any issues. I wasn’t lounging around inside of there but rather picked up my daughters toy and turned right back. This is an experience I will never forget and want to make it known that the current manager is absolutely out of place with her actions and behavior. As a member of over 5 years it genuinely leaves me no desire to return. The current environment is not welcoming at all and I do plan on taking further action against the filming of my children.

Unfortunately this place has gone down hill. New management has taken over recently and things have changed for the worst. I’m a mom and absolutely loved the girls in kids care. They were amazing and really cared for the kids. But 2 have been fired for false claims and the rest are all quitting because the management treats them so poorly. I will no longer go here if I don’t trust the people watching my child. It’s a shame how poorly management is. I’ve talked to the manager personally and told her my concerns but it’s obvious she does what she wants with no regard to what the customer wants.

And on top of all that. Lots of machines are always out of service as well as the water fountain.

I don’t really see owner responses on reviews below a 4-star. But I’m hoping this will still get a response with a 3 star. The location and cleanliness of this gym is really great. But can we do something about adding more 10-lb dumbbells? I tried rearranging my workout routines and gym times, these weights are NEVER available, only when I’m done and about to leave. Why are there only 2 sets IN THE ENTIRE GYM? That’s the most common weight used but somehow it’s the least number of sets. But there is way too many 5-lbs. I see so many other patrons searching around for the 10’s. You don’t even have any in the aerobics room, why? Please add at least 4 more sets for your busy location so everyone can share.

Been going this gym for 6 years now and it’s super clean. There are cleaners there all the time cleaning cardio machines and cleaning the floors.
It’s a VERY busy gym, especially after 5pm, so don’t expect to find parking.
My biggest issue is with the customers. Please put dumbbells back and DO NOT DO SUPERSETS when it’s super busy. It’s not the gyms fault for this, it’s common curtesy.
Seeing the bad reviews makes me laugh, they clearly aren’t regulars here.
The staff is super friendly! The locker rooms/bathrooms are always clean and tidy.
They have a lot of workout class options.
There’s a reason this place is always busy, because it’s the best one.

Used to come here back in high-school (2008) the equipment is all the same, alot of stupid junk machines, stuff is broken. It's nearly impossible to snag 25 or 30 LBS dumbells at any time of day. I literally have tried moving my gym time all over to try and adjust but you can never use the stuff you want because this gym is filled with idiots who like to talk, and take 5 minute rest sets while they stare at people. They have 4 racquet ball courts nobody ever ever ever uses, I don't get why they can't add more dumbells / weight equipment to this wasted space! They also have no freeweight platforms for deadline and squat. Drives me crazy that they havent added a glute bridge machine or any new equipment after like 20 years in business. Literally 1 of the worst gyms!

Just recently canceled my membership and my husbands. Good riddance to this gym! If you’re a real gym enthusiast, I strongly suggest going elsewhere. Always busy with teenagers and ppl who are there to just to socialize. I was super irritated today when canceling my husband’s membership. I was initially told that manager Selena is the ONLY one who can cancel. Which is absolutely absurd. Then she was told me that’s not true. I went in last week but was told she wasn’t working until the next week. I mentioned my husband was gonna be billed and that’s not fair to be billed because NO ONE else can cancel…. So today I went back and she did cancel but told me she couldn’t refund me because she was already doing too much by letting me cancel on behalf of my husband…I wish she would’ve told me that initially so that my husband couldve tried to come in instead of being charged. All would’ve been fine but you need to communicate pertinent info to your customers. There needs to be better management. Do better.

I had a great experience visiting LA Fitness in San Marcos as a guest with a 7 day pass. Robert was friendly and kind enough to let me use the facility 1 extra day as well :-). The facility is well kept with lots of options for gym enthusiast. From the pool, bball court, racket ball court, sauna (MY FAVE), spin class and other fitness classes, there is something for everyone. Thank you to the staff for making me feel like a regular.

It is a pretty nice gym overall with lots of space and many different things to do. With many col features with their machines, cardio, weights, pool, and sauna. A very spacious gym so there is always something to do but it is usually pretty packed depending on what time you go, and some of there equipment is on the older side but other than that no complaints.

I been coming here for years and it used to be a good gym till recently they let high school kids attend for free. Now machines are hard to get to because these kids are 5 deep standing there not working out, saw a kid mouthing off to a dude and almost caught a beat down but the under age issue. For the people that are actually paying to workout it sucks alot of my friends left the gym for this reason. They should let these kids in once or twice a week when it's slow

The gym is very organized and is always welcoming to members! I have experienced nothing but great things here. The operations manager Ariel always helps out anytime I have questions and always gives a warm welcome to everyone walking in!

I came in for the first time about a month ago looking for a membership and they were very friendly and helpful from the moment I walked in. Ariel the manager there made sure I was well taken care of and provided me with all the information I needed. The equipment is bery good and has everything you need. There’s a good amount of machines as well which is always nice. I signed up almost a month ago the gym is still always clean and the equipment is still well maintained and Ariel still goes above and beyond to make sure I always have a good workout! Definitely a good environment with good equipment and friendly workers!

Wow. When i first walked in i was dumbfounded
The GIRL, (maybe 16 working) was letting all the kids run around and I don’t mean in their little area. No these kids were jumping over and on the desk. She was letting act like wild banshees.
She couldn’t Check my child in for whatever reason.
I went to the front desk to do it and came back and all these kids WERE STANDING ON THE DESK

As a mother the child care is most important to me next to cleanliness. That’s not LAF San Marcos, maybe it’s bc it’s a college town and that’s what the workers and customers mainly are BUT HOLY HELL ITS DIRTY AND GROSS.

I only come to this location when I have to. But man I’d rather drive to vista or oside.

It's alright. Very smelly when you first walk in, I do feel like it should be cleaner for the membership prices we pay. Women's bathroom smelled terrible today and someone tell me WHY DO you guys have carpet in locker room?!! Found blood all over I feel bad for the cleaning ladies. 😖 if you change that and have some ventilation & clean floors, I would definitely give it 5 stars!

The level of professionalism and friendliness at this gym is what’s had me coming back for years. And it’s, in large part, due to Robert the Gym Manager’s leadership. The new Operations Manager, Ariel, is a huge boost to the staff, in my opinion. She’s really helped Rob level up the responsiveness and cordiality of the gym.

I had an incredible experience at this LA Fitness here in San Marcos! Robert and Ariel, the lead managers, were fantastic. They took the time to answer all my questions and gave me a thorough tour of the facility. Their enthusiasm got me excited about joining the gym and starting my membership. I grew up in San Marcos using this gym for years; I was recently visiting home and returned to find that it has been very well kept over the many years I’ve been gone, and the staff and management are probably the best they’ve ever been. My mom has had a membership for several years now and has also really enjoyed her experience here.

I really like this gym, it has everything I weight lifting, and then even more. A god warm up section, basket ball court, team room and so on. The employees here are really nice as well, they want you the best, and they always do a little extra to make you comfortable here.
I strongly recommend this gym 💪🏽

This gym is starting to smell bad, and one of the employees thinks it's okay to abuse the equipment while he is working out. (Roided out dude who thinks he owns the place)These 2 factors are the reason for the 3 stars. Maintenance seems to be slipping on equipment. Never enough lighter weights.
The housekeeping crew is always proactive and friendly. The morning check in crew is also friendly. The locker room is airways clean.
