La Plante Fitness provides training and nutritional coaching in San Francisco out of Diakadi, the city's premiere semi-private facility. You won't be subjected to cookie-cutter routines or trivial fitness fads when working with Justin La Plante - whether your goal is to get superhuman strong, finally lose those last ten pounds, or simply learn the basics, he'll provide a handcrafted, science-based program to get you there.
A multi-sport athlete for most of his life, Justin is now a certified strength and nutrition coach (CSCS, PN) who specializes in helping others look (and feel) more like superheroes. When not training clients (or Pokemon), you can probably find him reading comics or running a game of Dungeons & Dragons.

Justin has been my trainer for almost a year now--we started in November 2024, and we're still going strong as of September 2025. I've worked with several trainers over the years, but what sets Justin apart is his deep knowledge of the scientific literature. He studies what actually works (and what doesn't), which makes an enormous difference when it comes to making smart training decisions. There's so much "bro science" out there, and it's a relief to have someone in your corner who can cut through all of that noise.
Another thing I've especially valued is how he's helped me work through injuries. In the past, flare-ups would sideline me and force me to stop training altogether. With Justin, it's been different--when my shoulder flared up around July, he adjusted my program, experimented with variations, and helped me find movements that didn't aggravate the problem. I was worried I'd have to stop, but instead he had me switch/modify exercises and stay consistent. It's now September and I'm back to my pre-July intensity with better and safer form so as not to re-aggravate the joint problems.
Working with Justin has been a game-changer for me, both in terms of progress and longevity in training.

Justin helped me get in peak shape in time for my wedding. I already worked out, but had never successfully lost weight in a controlled manner. Justin helped me form a maintainable calorie deficit and built a great hypertrophy programme that could be done both in person and out of my garage gym that targeted more areas of muscle than I was previously hitting. Would definitely recommend Justin if you’re looking for that nudge to reach new levels of fitness!

I was hesitant to start working out with Justin as I was out of shape and I didn’t have any experience with strength training, I was afraid that there would be too much that I couldn’t do.
Justin met me right at my level of ability, he has been great at identifying my strengths and weaknesses and modifying exercises so that I could do them and then building bridges to get me where I want to be.
I cannot say enough great things about Justin as a trainer. He is reliable and easy to work with, is great at tailoring our routines to my needs, and he keeps every workout entertaining with his great sense of humor.
Updating this 4 years later to say that Justin has safely trained me through two pregnancies and post partums. He is knowledgeable and thoughtful about women’s health and the necessary considerations for the pregnant body. I had easy deliveries and recoveries thanks in large part to Justin!

I went to Justin hoping to address some old injuries with strength training.
His knowledge of anatomy and physiology was instrumental in allowing him to come up with a training plan for me. We went through a few iterations, trying different techniques. The end result is that I have been able to improve my shoulder strength in spite of previously damaged nerves.
I have been training with Justin for two years now, have significantly increased my strength, and am no longer bothered by my injury.
I highly recommend Justin.

Justin is an amazing trainer! I have worked with him over 6 years and during that time, he has trained me for my first century (100 mile) bike ride, through a chronic injury and more recently, through the challenges of the pandemic - supporting both the physical and mental. He meets you where you are. I am the strongest and most fit I have ever been thanks to him!

Working with Justin has been a true blessing. I met with him after years of trying to figure out how to treat my own physical ailments, and quickly learned he was just the person I needed to work with. With the current state of the fitness industry, it's great to meet someone who follows the facts; you won't hear of any BS Instagram "get-fit-quick" nonsense from Justin. His workout plans are tailored to your needs, and he will quickly adapt the workout plan to accommodate any exercises that may cause discomfort. After working with Justin for only 3 months, the majority of the pain in my shoulder, knee, and hip have all subsided. I'm now able to perform exercises I had to skip out on that had previously caused pain, and my confidence in the gym has skyrocketed as a result. There are a lot of challenges Justin has helped me with, but I’d say the most meaningful is helping me overcome several injuries – I injured my shoulder surfing several years ago and, despite a surgery, physical therapy, and work with other trainers, it just nagged me and wouldn’t heal up.
Justin identified the issue and built a plan to get me back to fighting fit, all while continuing to help me focus on overall health. Most importantly, though, he helped me understand the anatomy of the shoulder and (here’s the kicker) the compensation patterns built up over time that kept me from fully healing. Other trainers had helped me with routines, but Justin was the first to leverage real knowledge of movement and anatomy to figure out how to improve overall performance.
I would recommend Justin without hesitation because he continually demonstrates commitment to my success – he takes the time (often off the clock) to curate videos, information packets, and even personalized nutrition recommendations. He also has a deep (and long-lasting) passion for science and evidence, not trend-based diet and exercise. That, combined with his real, authentic desire to help people help themselves (and just being a fun guy to hang out with), makes him the best trainer I’ve ever worked with.

I had always been one of those runners who never saw the point in hitting the weight room (if I'm not sweating profusely, it doesn't count as a workout, right?), but since I've started working with Justin it's become an essential part of my routine! Reasons why:
- I love how it feels to lift heavy! It makes me feel strong and capable, and there's no way I would have gotten to the level where I am without Justin's guidance. And the strength has translated into stability and power in my primary sport. Finally getting some tone in my upper body has been nice too.
- Justin tailors his training to specific goals and capabilities. I've now worked with Justin through multiple running injuries, and it was great to have the consistency of weight training, modified around what I could do at the time, to keep me going during recovery.
- Justin keeps up with all the latest research on training and nutrition, and works it into his programs. And he's always happy to share the knowledge and nerd out on technical details.
- Justin is reliable, flexible, and friendly!
I was skeptical about personal training at first, but now really value it as an investment in my overall health. Justin is a fantastic trainer, and I highly recommend him to anyone interested in building their physical strength and resilience or working on body composition.

Initially, I came to Justin to get help with an injured knee. I had been a weightlifter and runner through graduate school, but after an injury, nearly eighteen months of hit-and-miss physical therapy meant that my overall strength and conditioning level had atrophied. After Justin helped me bridge physical therapy to fully return to the activities I’d enjoyed, like running, hiking, and weightlifting, we decided to keep working together.
Since then, we’ve restarted with the basics and entirely rebuilt my body: improving my form, increasing my strength, protecting me against future injury, all the while keeping me motivated and focused through good times and bad.
Friends have remarked that I look like an entirely different person (in a good way!), and Justin’s guidance and steady leadership in the gym have translated outside the gym into increased confidence, a changed set of life priorities, and even a promotion at work. I can’t recommend him highly enough.
