I was looking for a place to do super slow strength training and was pleased to find Live Oak, located in Emeryville.  The trainers are knowledgeable,  personable, and caring. The equipment is in excellent condition and they have a good number of machines for all body parts.

After 3 months of attending Live Oak once a week,  I feel stronger, increased the weight that I can lift, and have more confidence in my body and what I can do.  It's not easy, but I look forward to pushing myself each week.  If you want to improve your strength without hours in the weight room, Live Oak is the place for you.

I've been going to LOS for a little over a year. Owen and the entire team are great motivators. What I like best is that I can strength train even while injured, and often the exercises help resolve the issue. I started her with tennis elbow and hadn't been able to lift weights for a year, and the team was able to get me working on my arms again. My body feels stronger and has less pain overall.

I've been training with Owen for about a decade, since before he had his own gym, and he's excellent--rigorous, deeply knowledgeable, and warm-hearted. One only meets a certain number of guys as good as Owen in a lifetime. If you want to do strength training on machines, Owen's gym, Live Oak, is superlative. Simply the best equipment I've worked with anywhere on the planet. Every machine is very smooth and designed to give roughly equal resistance (relative to your muscles' leverage) throughout the whole range of motion, which is hard to find! Live Oak has rare equipment I seek out, like a lumbar extension machine, a neck extension machine, and a "pullover". Owen's a proponent of superslow, a low-momentum style of strength training that minimizes injuries so you can maintain it for decades (which is why I originally sought him out). Most people don't realize how much good you can do your body in just 30 minutes a week. Live Oak Strength Training is my favorite business, period, in any category.

Coming from a personal training and yoga background myself, I have been hugely impressed with the philosophy of this strength training gym and their staff. Highly trained, motivated and attuned to my particular needs, I have never come across such a powerful practice. "Failure is Success" is one of their slogans that flips conventional wisdom on it's head and asks you to be more mindful as to our deeper motivations for exercise.

Following their precise guidelines, I could imagine it being close to impossible to injure yourself. Thanks to the close one-to-one attention you get with posture, technique and weight selection.

I've never felt stronger and what's fascinating is I never get too sore after working out. You can put a lot into those 25 minutes and what comes out is exponential.

Another saying they have is "The rep is not the goal". Flipping conventional thought again, which I love. It's not how many reps you get - but it's the quality and persistence you give to only a few reps done at much higher weight and super slow tempo. Tension under load is the name of the game.

I often feel like a Jedi with total mind control, which the trainers happily facilitate. I also love that there are no mirrors. Although we are working the physical, there is so much emphasis placed on what's happening internally. Love this!

I could go on and on - but you must try it for yourself. If you are interested in getting inherently strong in mind and body so your body ages with grace then this is for you.

I had an excellent experience at Live Oak Strength. The staff are down to earth, knowledgeable and bring a ton of respect to the practice of high-intensity training. I felt very attended to, encouraged and welcome.

The machines are impressive. Because they are so well designed, and the coaches dial them in so carefully, it allowed me to go to full muscle failure without the risk of injury. From there, with all factors dialed in, it allowed me to focus on the mind-over-matter practice of staying with the discomfort of muscle failure -- this is where the gains are made, and why this workout is so efficient and swift.

I could feel the cardio of this workout, my body was grasping for water even though I was barely breaking a sweat. It was very interesting, and the next day I can feel my muscles in recovery and it makes me happy to know I gave it my all.

I am a mother of two in her mid-forties; I've always been very physically active, with plenty of cardio and even some strength training, but after three months at Live Oak, I feel stronger and better than I ever have in my life. A new friend told me about Live Oak, where she has been training for 5 years. I was so impressed by how young she seems in so many ways - her strength, balance, energy level and overall health are so amazing for a woman in her mid~ seventies. So…I signed up and have been going twice a week for 3 months now.
The sessions are intense~I’ve been athletic my entire life but never experienced anything like this. The trainers are all top notch, helping me with form and encouraging me 100% of the time. The equipment we use, along with the trainers, ensures safety. The sessions are short and always individualized for me. After just 3 months I feel stronger physically and mentally.
I believe that strength training is critical at my age (70) in terms of living a full and active life for many more years. And strength training with a personal trainer is way more effective than training in a gym on my own.
Live Oak may seem expensive but in my opinion it is worth every cent, and I intend to continue training there for many years.

Live oak is fantastic! It doesn’t feel like a gym but more like a fitness studio, and it is extremely tailored to one’s individual needs.

But the results show; I’ve never been so strong.

As a musician I have particular needs around care for tendons and the risk of stiffness when I need to perform. So I’ve been hesitant to work with a trainer until I found live oak and their trainers, who have been fantastic at helping me reach my goals with sensitivity to my body.

The personalized nature of the training feels extremely safe for my body and enables me to push my limits extremely hard without worry.

Excellent equipment including some very fancy cutting-edge robotic workout gear and body assessment tools certainly helps, and the overall evidence-based approach to strength training makes it feel like a very worthwhile use of time.

I am so grateful for Live Oak! About a year ago I was stuck in bed with back or neck pain on a monthly basis. I was approaching 40 and knew I needed something to change. Luckily my girlfriend had trained with Owen previously and I saw what great results she got, so I got on the waitlist. When a slot opened up, I was ready to show up and do whatever it took to get strong and healthy again.

My workouts challenge my strength in ways I did not know was possible. Before Live Oak, I would get involved in a sport or workout class and bring my all - after a few workouts or long games, I would inevitably hurt myself. Pickleball led to a shoulder injury that took years to recover from, running hurt my lower back, and workout classes would push me too hard and something would hurt by the next day.

When I started working with Live Oak, I set a goal to be able to run without pain - I gave myself 9 months and declared that I would run a pain free 5k by my 40th birthday. I am beyond proud to have accomplished that 5k and to be able to swim, run, and lift heavy things without being laid out the next day! I am sore after my workouts with Live Oak, but the results are 1000% worth it.

Some folks express surprise at the price of the monthly packages, but the amount I am saving on chiropractic, massage, and emotional regulation (yes, these workouts support a healthy mental state!!) are incomparable! I can’t afford NOT to workout with Live Oak.

The owner, Owen, is friendly, honest, and kind. I trust his business ethic and it feels great to support his business, his team, and to grow and thrive with this gym!

During my 76 years I have jogged, done yoga, lifted weights, and engaged personal trainers for both exercise and weight lifting programs, but it wasn't until my alternative health care practitioner suggested I try Live Oak training after a serious bout of cancer that I decided to investigate Live Oak slow weight resistance program. I am hooked!

Lucy and Owen, the owners of Live Oak training, are superb trainers as are the other trainers who have joined their team; they explain and watch your every movement, from the placement of your toes to the alignment of your neck, so that you do the exercises precisely both to avoid injury and to get the maximum benefit of each movement.

The results of their instruction in this 25-30 minutes of resistance training are ASTOUNDING. Indeed, you cannot obtain these health and strength benefits in any typical gym. I leave every session walking taller, moving with greater flexibility, balance, and strength, and experiencing the sense of elation that comes with vigorous and bold exercise.

There are simply no words really to express my gratitude for the health practitioner, who strongly suggested I go to Live Oak, and to Lucy and Owen for their attentiveness to every person who works with them. In short, they are extraordinary practitioners, teachers, and individuals!

I'm an eighty year old woman who's been working out at Live Oak for a year and a half. Here's the miracle that befell me a week ago: I was pulling closed, on a small knob, a garage door swollen from rain. My hand slipped and I flew backwards, landing on my back, right side / hip on the concrete floor.

NOTHING HAPPENED TO ME, except for a bruise on my right forearm. I didn't even bruise on my right side.

Here's to Live Oak, no matter how often or often I swear at my wonderful trainer. And to the fact that it's never to late to grow - in all ways. I'll be growing stronger at Live Oak til I die.

This is a different Kind of gym. If you are checking into going here you might already know that. I found my way here by reading “Body by Science” and becoming interested in the “slow movement, more weight, shorter duration” style of strength training they practice at Live Oak. I’ve trained with everyone here at some point and have always had great experiences. Jeff is my trainer these days and he is awesome. Owen and Lucy, the owners, are tops.

I’ve had several health challenges while going to this gym and am certain that it has helped me resolve them more quickly or prevent them from being worse in all cases. When I started I had frozen shoulder which limited the range of motion in my left arm. They modified exercises to accommodate my range of motion and adjusted them as it improved. I know that going to Live Oak shortened my recovery time. This was my second round of frozen shoulder so I have a comparison.

You can do this if you have health challenges. It takes ½ hour a week. You will get stronger faster and feel better. I’m the strongest I have ever been and more than I imagined I could be. It’s helped me improve my health and become more resilient mentally and physically. I have a lot of gratitude for everyone here. They clearly care about what they do. I highly recommend trying it.

As someone who doesn't like the typical gym environment (and dislikes exerting myself even more), but also recognizes the importance of being strong (especially as one gets older), I truly appreciate the unique approach and Zen-like atmosphere of Live Oak Strength. It's true, it is a short but difficult workout. You will be pushed to your upper limits. It will not be fun. BUT the workouts have really helped to improve not only my physical strength but my mental strength as well. All of the trainers are super friendly and supportive. I work with Jeff, and he is great at motivating me and knowing when I have more (or less) to give. I have been training at Live Oak Strength for 8 months and never felt like I needed to write a review because they already had so many great reviews. But after my latest experience with lower back pain this past weekend, I am totally convinced that my strength training with Live Oak Strength is paying off and want to give them a shoutout for the great care and training they have provided me.

This past Saturday, I volunteered to work at the Berkeley Lions Club’s Crab Feed and was on my feet for almost 7 hours continuously. I helped set the tables, prep food, washed dishes, cleaned and lifted really large pots and pans… My feet and back were killing me at the end of the day. In the past, the type of pain I was feeling in my lower back would always result in extreme if not excruciating pain the following day. Miraculously, I was in no pain when I got out of bed on Sunday! I am writing this on Wednesday and still no pain. I can only attribute that to the strength training I have been receiving at Live Oak Strength. I am so thankful to have found them.

Owen has been wonderful to train with. He is so patient and is meticulous about my form to be sure that I exercise safely. He knows everything about which machines will benefit me the most; He knows when to push me for more effort, and when I have no more to give. I am not looking for the fountain of youth, but I do hope to maintain or improve my good health long into my retirement years. (I am a 65-year-old woman.) To be able to achieve my goals in less than 30 minutes once a week is amazing and right up my alley. My next goal is to improve my bone density through strength training so that I can avoid osteoporosis in my future.

I have been going to Live Oak for a couple of months and I am very happy with it.
Live Oak focuses on one thing, strength training. I belong to the Y. The Y has a swimming pool, basketball courts, and more fun stuff. I like the Y. The Y lacks the singular focus that I appreciate about Live Oak. Live Oak is great at strength training because that is the only thing they do.
Here is what makes Live Oak great at strength training.
First is safety. To spur growth of muscle, I need to get close to failure. With the outstanding trainers at Live Oak and the excellent equipment, I am safe getting right up to failure. My trainer is always watching my form, keeping me safe. I grew up with the ethic that it was always better to workout harder and longer. That led me to doing more risky things. Live Oak uses research to keep my workouts rational.
Second is efficiency. Live Oak training is efficient in several ways. The training is intense enough so that each session is only 20 minutes. I wondered about such short sessions, but I’ve found their sessions work my body very well. It is efficient for me since they always have my program laid out. They keep track of my progress. They know how much I should be lifting. I don’t sit around between lifts wondering what to do next. They have the program set. If my left shoulder is bothering me, they are flexible. But, I don't have to figure out if today is my back-n-bicep day. Live Oak has me covered.
Third is the professional partnership. The trainers are unfailingly encouraging and friendly. Since all sessions are just me and my trainer, the relationship is critical. I am always their focus. When I’m by myself, I’m always thinking I’ve reached my limit. At Live Oak, I’ve been able to work past what I’d thought was my limit. It isn’t from someone yelling at me. The trainers are genuinely kind people. They are helping draw the best performance from me. They offer positive ques and it works.

This is a different sort of workout place but oh so beneficial. I have been using Live Oak Strength for over 2 years now after my Functional Medicine Dr recommended ARX workouts. I then found Live Oak and Owen and Crew and WOW! Previously my exercise regime has been Pilates for 20+ years, regular strength training2-3 times a week for an hour each, Cardio dance, TRX workout. Before Live Oak I was at the gym 5 days a week and now I work out 25 minutes with trainer once a week, ARX once a week, CAROL bike twice a week and I am in far better shape now. I have had osteopenia for 20+ years and my most recent bone density had actually improved. My joints are all in much better shape with less pain from arthritis (My knee pain and low back flare ups are virtually gone). My pre diabetes is under good control and my belly fat has decreased. I am a retired Family Practice MD, a 75 years old woman, and so thankful for Live Oak Strength and Owen and Jeff and Dylan.

If you are looking to improve your quality of life then add Live Oak to your weekly routine. After years of working out on my own and not seeing a difference I found Live Oak through my research. I was skeptical at first because how can you get fit after 25 minutes of working out, but you can! I am Board Certified Pediatric Dentist, I run my own business and I have two kids so I don't have a lot of time to workout but they make it feasible. They take the thought out of what exercises you need to do and they track the amount of weight you are lifting every time. Their system is meticulous. The Live Oak workouts can get painful but it's a good pain since you know you're in and out in 25 minutes and you're getting stronger. I highly recommend this place for any busy person with not a lot of time to waste getting healthy and for prevention of fractures in the future.

I knew the Shelter-in Place mandate was the right thing to do, but I was worried I’d lose all the strength I’d gained during the time I’d been working with Owen at Live Oak Strength. I have several health issues that make it imperative for me to stay strong, and while I’ve been active while staying at home, I knew I needed the Live Oak high-intensity workout to continue to stay strong and healthy. I was so happy to learn that Live Oak Strength is open for business online during Shelter-in-Place. I had my first virtual workout this week, meeting with Owen in my living room through the magic of the internet and Zoom. Honestly, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I was pleased to find out that by using things I already had around the house (yoga block, beach towel, 5 lb. weights), Owen was able to direct me through a challenging workout. I started training at Live Oak Strength in January 2018, just before my 68th birthday, with the goal of being strong enough to walk the West Highland Way in Scotland. I was going with a group scheduled to walk the entire 96 miles in 8 days in August. In addition to weekly workouts with Owen, I "practiced" walking 9 miles in <4 hours most week-ends to prepare. After about four months working with various team members at Live Oak, I noticed that I stopped making the grunting noises that one usually makes after age 45 when performing massively strenuous things like tying my shoes, or bending over to pick up a Kleenex. "Huuuufffff! Whrrrrrrr!" Like that. But after a few months, I was just cantilevering around like a 20 year-old gymnast in a hurry to get on with the day. "This is strange." I thought. "Unexpected!" And then, as if by magic, I noticed a few months later that I stopped holding on to bannisters when I dashed (Yes, really! Dashed!) up or down stairs at BART. No more wobbly joints. No more "I'm 60. I can take the escalator!"

I started at Live Oak Strength a little over a year ago, before I turned 60. I just wanted to get some strength back at first. The results have been pleasantly unexpected!

The big surprise came last month when I got my annual lab results back. My cholesterol was jaw-droppingly low. Also, my A1c had gone from 7.1 (just barely controlled diabetes) to 6.4, the upper limit of pre-diabetes. "Most people don't do this," my doctor said. That is how he says "Wow!" It's his way.

The whole time I have been at Live Oak, the staff has been really supportive, amiable, and just plain nice to work with. I've worked out in gyms and with trainers before, but I have never felt as satisfied as I do at Live Oak. I definitely recommend it to anyone who can fit it into their week!

I hate to work out because I don't like the gym atmosphere. But I LOVE training at Live Oak! I get 1 on 1 attention to make my training both safe and effective. The space is cool, quiet and CLEAN so I can focus on the exercises. Exercise technique is HIT or High Intensity Training. I work really hard, and then I'm out an 30 minutes. Not only does Live Oak’s workout produce results, they do so in ONLY 20 MINUTES once or twice a week. Their instruction is to rest your muscles otherwise and only engage in activity that you enjoy as being pain free and able to move and function well in your life. All this and the best results I’ve ever seen (with myself and others) with much harder, longer workouts.
Owen Dockham and staff are well-informed and professional. Trainers take the time and thought to help you define your fitness goals and then work safely and efficiently to help you move towards them. Owen takes detailed notes during your private training sessions and attends to the most minute detail of your alignment to make sure your workout is not only safe, but offering you the best, body-changing results.
Personally, working out with Owen reduced my level of body pain significantly. In just a couple of months, I progressed from being in quite a bit of muscle and joint pain just from walking around the block, to gardening for three hours on the weekend, taking my dogs for two walks a day, swimming, and doing yoga I enjoy. (Not that any of this extra exercise is needed with this workout; I just became so energized and pain-free, that engaging in these activities makes me happy and enjoy life more!) I also sleep soundly and my energy level feels balanced (instead of a burst and then crash) throughout the day. In fact, I feel better, more energetic and stronger in my body now, in my 40’s, than I did years ago in younger decades.
Professionally, as a Health Psychologist, I have referred some of my patients and colleagues to Live Oak. I take great care with my clients and those close to me, so making repeated referrals to Live Oak is a testament to how much I trust and respect their work. Unequivocally, the feedback I have received is that trainers are respectful, caring, encouraging, effective, and people see the results they want – more freedom to feel good in their bodies.
I cannot recommend Owen and his staff at Live Oak enough!
