Locomotion is the best group gym experience I've ever had. As "group fitness," you'll be shocked at how personalized it feels. From my very first sessions, the coaches learned my name, my strengths, and my goals and that personal attention has never faded.

The atmosphere is incredibly welcoming. I've never once felt intimidated or like an outsider, which is rare in a group fitness setting. There are tons of regulars here (a testament to how good it is), but they embrace newcomers with open arms. Even partner workouts are stress-free because the coaches thoughtfully pair you up based on size and capability so no awkward moments or feeling left out.

The programming is strength-focused, not just endless reps or HIIT burnout. Every workout challenges you to grow with proper form and progressive weight. Coaches don't just stand back or sit on their phones, they are constantly walking around, giving constructive feedback to keep you safe and improving without ever making you feel judged.

The gym itself is solid: clean, open concept, brand-new equipment. The music keeps things fun too - each trainer has their own personality and favorite playlists - one morning might be punk/rock, the next hip-hop, and another high-energy house mix to fuel a Friday which makes classes fresh and motivating.

I was skeptical about the 3-week programming format at first because I hate routine and predictability, but I actually love it and it wasn't even a learn to love it experience. Having back to back weeks of the same program is like having a personal trainer because you can track your weights and really see progress more easily. (And if you're not feeling a particular workout, it's easy to swap/avoid that day hehehe). Booking is simple, even same-day, and rarely you'll see a waitlists or stress, plus the cancellation policy is super reasonable.

What really sets Locomotion apart is how much the trainers care. James, the owner, checks in regularly with personal texts to make sure I'm getting the most out of my membership. When I had back pain after a vacation, he offered a free 1:1 consult to help me safely get back into training. He even worked with me when I had an unexpected billing issue with my old gym - something he absolutely didn't have to do, but did because he genuinely cares about his members.

If you've been looking for a gym that combines the energy / discipline of group fitness with the attention of personal training and a community that will make you feel right at home - Locomotion is it. I can't recommend it enough.

Wow, where do I even start? Locomotion isn’t just the best gym in San Diego, it’s the best gym I’ve ever been a part of. And no, I’m not just saying that because my husband coaches here ;)

I joined Loco in September 2022 with a lifelong athletic background - competitive soccer, distance running, all of it. But despite all that, I knew I was missing something. I needed strength. I needed muscle. And honestly, I was stuck in an unhealthy cycle with food and struggling to gain weight. I was ready for a change, and Loco delivered.

From the very beginning, I dove straight into five group fitness classes a week—and got hooked. Alex’s classes sharpened my form, especially with kettlebells and deadlifts, while James brought intensity, creativity, and laser focus on progress. And when my husband later joined as a coach, I got to see what I already knew about him in action: he listens deeply, pushes people with care, and helps them grow into stronger versions of themselves.

The transformation has been nothing short of incredible. When I started, I was severely underweight and couldn’t pull more than 100 pounds off the floor. Fast forward to today: I’m deadlifting 245 pounds, up ten pounds of solid muscle, fueling my body properly, and finally being kinder to myself. That’s not just physical change—it’s a whole mindset shift.

And then there’s the magic ingredient: the community. WOW. The people at Loco are truly next-level. I’ve made some of my closest friends here in San Diego. Every class is filled with encouragement, grit, and good energy. After a long day in corporate America, walking into Loco feels like hitting a reset button—friendly faces, good vibes, and the kind of support you don’t find anywhere else.

Locomotion isn’t just where you get stronger. It’s where you get better inside and out. I honestly can’t recommend this place enough. If you’re even thinking about joining, do it. You’ll thank yourself later.

Update: I'm now being harassed by Locomotion members on Instagram, and it seems they're also now trying to crowd their page with 5 star reviews, which is funny. Any business with integrity should be able to handle honest feedback.

I'm simply describing my experience with facts. Instead of taking the cheap route of $69 for 21 days, I fully committed, paid $500 for 8 weeks of Onboarding, and attended 20 classes. I focused on the substantive issues in my original post and didn't even mention some of the other issues that in addition to all the other misses justify doing a chargeback --- I didn't get the Locomotion swag that we're promised via Onboarding, or the 2 body comp assessments we're supposed to do in that timeframe -- like the introduction to the private training facility that we were promised, we let all of this slide.

I'll add to my coaching anecdotes- in one of the classes, the male coach said, are you sure you can do a press with the barbell? Maybe just go with dumbbells. This was even though I had previously reported and shown that I could press as much as 100 lbs! The low effort and lack of interest from the coaches was ultra disappointing to see. I have so many more data points I could share from my 8 weeks.

Locomotion has rules for clients and I'm wondering how much better it could be if they had rules for coaches! Ironically, if the coaches had done a good job, I may have actually signed up for 1:1 coaching. So this was an interesting business decision on their part. I think the owner means well, but doesn't have a good enough crew to back him up. I was glad to see that they are keeping the new female coach, who seemed awesome.

I still suspect the Shirin post as a duplicate; and it appears Nat is one of the coach's spouses. I have no doubt a coach's spouse will have a 5 star experience. The question is what the rest of us experience. I'm wondering how much Nat pays for her classes, or if they're maybe comped. These kinds of posts highlight the immaturity of the Locomotion community and take away from the integrity of the review system.

I've worked out in a variety of strength training and cross functional training settings for the last 20 years in the Midwest and the Southeast. I'm not in good shape at the moment but I move relatively well and I love movement and I love lifting -- and I approach any new training situation by providing this transparency.

With that context, I signed up for Locomotion's Onboarding package 2 months ago even though I probably didn't need it. I say that because I ended up being in classes with people that had never done a KB swing or a backsquat, but they weren't doing onboarding. My 1:1 onboarding sessions were mildly challenging but you could tell the coach was phoning it in - there was no plan or goal in mind for the sessions; the coach also didn't introduce me to the private training facility that I was supposed to be introduced to via this Onboarding. But we rolled with it because we are kind humans. And well, I was excited about getting back into working out.

Locomotion comes really close to providing an awesome training environment but they're lacking in a couple of big areas --- none of the coaches, except for the new female coach, really pushes you to be better - everyone seems afraid to push you. One of the regular coaches is always on his phone during class! So instead of pushing you to not stop during the last 10 seconds of an interval, the coach is busy scrolling on his phone. Also, in my short time here, they have taken away the effective and fun KB conditioning class and seem to focus more on classes that repeat the same backsquat, deadlift, hip thrust movements that are honestly kind of boring especially because there doesn't seem to be enough time or space to work to a PR; none of the classes seem to involve any true skill building or goal achievement.

Locomotion has lots of potential, but right now, it's at the same level as Performance360, which is cheaper and offers more class and pricing options.

I started at Locomotion Athletics at the end of 2024 and I am beyond happy with the results so far. I came here wanting to move with intention and have been able to do just that. I had been struggling with tendinitis in both my biceps tendons and the coaches have been incredibly attentive. They are always checking my form, offer modifications, and push me just the right amount to keep progressing safely. The programming is smart and well-structured, and I’ve learned so many new skills while getting stronger (especially in the shoulder region). Every member, no matter their fitness level, is treated with respect and encouragement. The community here is something special, and I’m proud to be part of it!

After my previous coach moved away, I struggled to find a new gym where I felt comfortable, felt like the trainers/coaches were knowledgeable and understood my goals and limitations with previous injuries, was at a price point I felt was appropriate, and a had variety of classes and class times to choose from.

A few other members from my previous gym came across Locomotion Athletics and highly recommended it. As soon as I joined the classes after my onboarding, I knew I had found the perfect place for me!

I joined in January shortly before the warehouse space opened. It’s a beautiful, easy accessible place (plenty of parking on the street or across the street). I love the programs — they are challenging and provide a variety of movements. I didn’t focus much on upper body previously and the “Build Up” classes have improved my upper body strength. It’s been rewarding to see and feel myself get stronger! People are down to earth and class size is perfect since it’s not more than about 16 people per class.

As a very active person who plays soccer several days a week, I don’t need cardio/HIIT classes and because of previous injuries, I need something low impact. I’m able to do 3-4 classes a week while still playing soccer. Ultimately, I’m focused on injury prevention and building muscles in areas that James has helped me identify are weak. As James taught me, women lose muscle mass and bone density as they age, starting in their 30s! Women should not be afraid to lift heavy. Contrary to popular belief, it will not make us bulky. I want to continue to be active as I get older!

All of the coaches are great! They correct my form, give me modifications, when needed, motivate, and are really knowledgeable.

Special shoutout to James, who has helped me be stronger than I’ve ever been —he teaches me a ton of information (e.g. load management, nutrition, the importance of resting between sets, etc.) encourages me to ensure I’m pushing myself and keeps me accountable. He truly cares about the gym and the members and he shows that every day in how he shows up.

I recently partially tore my calf playing soccer and he’s checked in on me regularly and helped me rehab and recover. This videos are of me trying out the Zercher squat last week when I was working with him 1:1.

but finding the right place…that’s different. it’s about energy. chemistry. whether you belong there or you’re just another membership fee.

most gyms feel transactional. like you’re paying for access to equipment and nothing more.

not this one.

locomotion athletics gets it. gets me. in ways i didn’t even know i needed to be gotten.

listen. i used to be the person who smiled politely when coaches would say things like “you’ll be able to do this” or “trust the process” and i’d nod along thinking…sure, and maybe i’ll sprout wings while i’m at it.

i was wrong.
they were right.
about everything.

i’m doing things now i never imagined: lifting weights that used to seem impossible. pulling myself up from bars i could barely hang from.

the coaches here…they see something in you before you see it in yourself. and then they wait. patiently. while you catch up to their vision.

am i still coming to terms with the fact that they were right all along?

absolutely.

it’s humbling in the most beautiful way.

the programming here isn’t just smart. it’s intuitive. like someone crawled inside your body and figured out exactly what it needed to wake up. every workout feels purposeful. intentional. like a conversation between you and your potential.

and the community…

the community!

this isn’t some sterile fitness factory. this is a place where people show up as themselves. where celebrations happen for first pull-ups, personal records, and simply showing up on days when showing up feels impossible.

the coaches don’t just correct your form. they see you. really SEE you. they know when to push and when to hold space. when to celebrate and when to simply nod with quiet understanding.

i’m stronger than i’ve ever been in my life.

which feels poetic since i have a book coming out that’s probably going to ruffle some feathers. (nothing wrong with a little self-promotion, right? “i wish i was worse” coming nov 9!) there’s something deeply satisfying about knowing that when the inevitable fights come from what i’ve written about people, i’ll be ready. the strength i’ve built here isn’t just physical. it’s the kind that holds you steady when the world decides to have opinions about your truth.

Nothing beats father time, but with Locomotion I'm doing my best to keep him at bay! I've always been an active person, but was neglecting weight lifting as a part of my routine. As a woman in my 50s, with 3 stress fractures over 2 years, I had to change up my routine and start lifting. I specifically appreciate Locomotion's approach to new clients--spending time one-on-one with a personal trainer to really understand how to do the lifts in a proper way. The structure of the classes are super intentional, with focused exercises in each block, keeps it fun and moving along. After almost a year with Locomotion, I am with out a doubt stronger, and maybe even more important, proud to tell people I train for strength!

I came to Locomotion in November or December of 2023, after my previous gym closed. I was looking for a place where I could keep progressing with my strength training, but I was leery of group fitness places that said they focused on strength/resistance training, but where the workouts ended up being more HIIT/cardio.

After my first class and first on-boarding session with James, I knew I'd found what I was looking for. The programming at my first class assured me that Locomotion truly was focused on proper strength training and talking with James confirmed this. I immediately knew Locomotion was a place where the health and fitness goals and values aligned with my own. I believe in consistency and the environment at Locomotion makes it easy for me to be consistent.

I really enjoy the programming and the variety of the workouts, but I think my favorite part of Locomotion is the coaches. Not only are they incredibly knowledgeable and experienced, but they communicate well and also make you feel super comfortable. They'll meet you where you're at that day, whatever your energy level is at and however you're feeling, and help you modify the workouts as necessary. Good coaches make all the difference, in my opinion, and the coaches here are some of the best. I started one-on-one trainings this year with Alex and have already started seeing great results.

Bottom line: Locomotion has everything I was looking for in terms of workouts, coaches, and a supportive community. Absolutely recommend if you're looking for a great place for strength training!

About 3 years ago, I had a pretty annoying problem with my lower back due to poorly done exercises and an intense schedule of classes I was taking without any breaks. I ended up injuring myself and had to stop going to the gym, which was very challenging because I couldn’t imagine not being able to go anymore. So, I spent 7 months doing Pilates, recovering and learning to be patient… and when I finally recovered, I rushed back to the gym that a friend recommended. She was already a member and told me how well-prepared they were and how their priority was your form and the correct way to exercise. I’ve been here for 18 months now, and I want to sincerely thank all of you for all the learning and care. I’m so happy to be here almost daily with all of you.

This is the best gym in San Diego! I love working out here so much! The membership is super reasonable, especially considering the amount of classes offered! The space is beautiful with really cool artwork and there is always tons of easy/free parking all day. The equipment is top quality and is kept VERY clean. They use Wodify for scheduling classes, so that is super easy. Class sizes are never overcrowded, but enough size to make it fun! The gym has all the essentials with tons of variety, but what I love most is the use of barbells and kettlebells - nothing in my opinion beats a challenging squat workout! But the one thing that sets Locomotion apart from any other gym is the inclusivity. Trainers are so caring and the community is so welcoming to everyone! I wish I could be a new-comer here all the time because it was such a joy to join, learn fitness, and to meet so many new friends!

Before I was introduced to locomotion athletics I would work out maybe once every 3 months or so. I never found a gym, class, or exercise routine I really enjoyed and would actually stick with. Locomotion Athletics is legit. I was looking for a gym that had a full array of classes and programs focused on keeping me functionally fit while also providing the opportunity to build strength. There are classes dedicated to "standard" lifting (squats, deadlifts, bench, etc.); if you want to get a burn and build in some cardio, there's classes that will kick your butt; even open gym sessions if you want to work out on your own. Classes are geared towards all levels, from those just starting out in their strength building journey to the veteran lifter. The coaches are all trained and certified, super approachable, non-intimidating, and overall just awesome people. Classes are offered all week, with daily offerings that will fit anyone's schedule. The community of members is diverse, supportive, and a fun group to hang and work out with. I'd definitely recommend Locomotion if you're looking for a gym that will give you what you need to reach your fitness goals.

It's been a little over a month since I officially joined locomotion athletics and I can't get enough. I lost interest with my previous workout group and also was tired of not seeing improvement with my physique. I don't know how I found locomotion athletics but I started following them on instagram and finally had the courage to join their program. I have already seen improvement and I have been slowly increasing my weights. So excited to have found James and the amazing coaches. Can't wait to see how I progress.
UPDATE. I joined Loco in November of 2022. This last post mentioned that I couldn't wait to see how I progressed. Since then I have gained muscle and lost fat. As of today I can carry out unassisted chin ups and pull ups, lift hex bars and barbells (of course with additional weight). My most favorite is being able to carry out kettlebell snatches. It's taken some time but I finally feel like I am gaining confidence in these. This has been one of the best decisions I have made for my longevity. I am soon to hit the 50 year mark and this is the strongest I have ever felt in my life. I love every coach here and also love working out with the members. They cheer you on as you PR or grunt.

My husband and I have been coming to Locomotion for a few months now and we love it. We left our previous gym hoping to find a gym where we could improve our form and technique and to build strength, and we couldn’t have found a better gym than Locomotion! Locomotion is an awesome gym! I’ve been coming here for 6 months now and have learned so much and built a lot of strength. I came in as a runner, yogi, and ClassPass junkie looking to build strength and prevent injuries that have been sneaking up over time. James knows what's up. He has created a program at Locomotion that is truly impressive and most importantly EFFECTIVE! I have had the honor of knowing James since 2011 when we worked at another fitness club together. James always had a positive energy about him and it was clear he was focused and dedicated to his profession. I happened to run into James years later in 2019, when he shared that he opened up his own gym, Locomotion Athletics. Without hesitation, I joined his gym and became hooked on the energy and fitness style. Functional fitness and the way James (and now his team of coaches) teaches it, is hard to beat. The explanations on form and technique are so entirely thorough and his team goes into great detail as far as breathing, where to tighten and what to, or not to do, to avoid injury. They pay attention to each client, give constructive advice on adjustments, and offer alternative exercises if clients have certain limitations. James incorporates a variety of classes to hit different muscle groups and staggers classes appropriately to allow those muscles to rest and recover. Every 4 weeks James introduces new programs to allow the body a new stimulus and avoid adaptation. I look and feel stronger, faster and younger 😊 A recent experience I’d like to share is when I stepped off of a staircase and rolled my ankle pretty bad. I am 100% sure if I weren’t training the way I do at Locomotion my ankle would have for sure been broken. My body is ready for anything, more agile and definitely stronger because of the fitness style you get here. I am a dedicated and loyal client and I would highly recommend this gym to meet your fitness goals.

Loco is the best!!!! Where do I begin with this review?! There are so many things that have impacted both my physical health and my mental health in a huge way.

I have always been one to try everything but eventually fall off with inconsistency or lack of motivation. Not here…James provided me with goals that I actually wanted to tackle. I learned the foundations through private training (highly recommend doing this first!! Game changer) which then allowed me to participate in the group classes with confidence and….. I never get bored.
It’s like my body and I have finally agreed to work together on healthy longevity and inner strength.

I found Locomotion because I needed an inbody test and while I was there for my test I saw a class that looked interesting. I decided to try locomotion for 10 days (they have a special of 10 days for $20) and haven't looked back since. Originally I was on my weight loss journey for my wedding (shoutout to James because I looked fab at my wedding), but I'm still here because this is the place to be in San Diego. Everyone is SUPER nice and welcoming, the coaches are great, and you leave feeling amazing. The coaches really care about form which as a person who loves group classes, can be really hard to find. The classes are honestly the perfect size and I feel super comfortable here. As someone who has tried every workout under the moon (from pilates, yoga, HIIT, cardio classes, you name it), this is the best place for an all around great workout that incorporates strength training and cardio. 10/10 from me!

James is the owner, and by far the best coach, but all of the coaches are educated, professional, and detailed oriented. The community is friendly, and I love that everyone is at a different place in their fitness journey but all working hard to become stronger. The facility itself is very clean and organized. It may not seem very big at first, but space is managed appropriately, and you will never feel crammed or like there’s no space to move around. As far as the programming goes, I give it a 10/10! Everyday is total body, and while you can expect to see different stuff each day, there’s also a lot of the same movements throughout the week. I really like this because you can work at getting stronger at those movements. When looking for a strength program, I don’t want to do the same thing each day, but I also don’t want every single session to be completely different from the other. Locomotion’s programming is the perfect balance! The style of training they use also won’t cause you to feel super dead after a workout; maybe some mild to moderate soreness but nothing that will absolutely destroy your next 3 days lol. Local Motion Fitness is the best way get your goals on track, and has become my favorite way to start my day. Despite being an active person (I bike, hike, and do water sports) I have never been able to tone my body. I just couldn’t get motivated to train —there was no point, I never saw results. Working with James, motivation is your last concern. He provides it. Your job is to just keep up. The good news he makes an intense 45 minute workout so much fun and never ever predictable or dull. He constantly challenges you because he wants you to hit your goals, and he knows what works—and cheating is just not an option. He makes sure you do the exercises correctly. Love locomotion! The workouts are challenging and fun with great music to make the hour fly by. James constantly changes the routine to keep things fresh. He’ll modify and personalize workouts for you if you are recovering from an injury as well. Can’t reccomend this place enough!

I have been working out with Locomotion Athletics for a little over a year now and I can honestly say I feel healthier then I have ever felt in my life and I'm 37 years old. The group fitness culture has kept me driven and held me accountable to my workouts. I started taking a few classes here and there as one of the coaches is a friend, and I wanted to help him out.. BUT the workouts are just too good! He converted me from an on and off, drop-in customer to a full blown member trying to make it to a class 4-5 times a week! I look forward to these classes! I love ALL of the coaches, how they design the classes each day to be different, the workout crew, the music... Everything about Locomotion is everything I didnt know I wanted! My fitness level is completely elevated and Im in the best shape of my life! On top of it, Ive had to deal with injuries due to poor form and that has completely changed how I workout because of how they focus on each person in class to make sure you dont continue to get injuries. I cant say enough good things about Locomotion!

So excited about this new gym in Old Town! I’m a beginner when it comes to strength training and I can really appreciate the attention & encouragement you get with the small group workouts here. Was able to learn proper form and really appreciated the checkins from the instructor to make sure I kept up the proper form & the guidance on the amounts of weight for my level. Everyone in the group was super friendly and really encouraging. Will look forward to going to Locomotion 1-2x/week, having fun, learning proper form and getting in shape!!

Challenging and fun! I have been taking classes for 2 weeks now and I am loving it! The next morning, I can always feel the impact from the work put in the day before. It's the best feeling! Each class is a little different which keeps it interesting. And Im definitely motivated to always improve on repeat exercises. Looking forward to new found muscle definition for summer. My butt is gonna look so good in no time! I used to kickbox/box, but got tired of that kind of workout because I was getting injured often. I wanted to find another workout that was not only high intensity, but incorporated weight training and stretching, and I found it with Locomotion Athletics! One of the best parts about this is that I get to work out outdoors and with my friends. James is an awesome instructor! His training is intense, fun, and has lots of variety. I love working outdoors with James and my group! Since I spend so much time in doors at work and at a desk, it is nice to be able to enjoy the beautiful city we live in and work up a sweat. I like that he goes through a lot of range of motion exercises during the work out. I highly recommend joining if you want to get healthy and enjoy some nature.

Darrick is the best powerlifting coach around, AND he & Anna come up with workouts that are as fun as they are challenging! Whether I'm working out w Darrick in person & getting the benefit of his motivation, form checks, & fun company, or doing his prescribed workouts elsewhere, I feel lucky that he's my coach. Locomotion Athletics offers highly customized workouts to reach your goals. I've taken several classes from Darrick, James and Anna and they are excellent, motivational, fun trainers. Have been training with my daughter and Darrick 2x/wk for over a year. Darrick is always prepared with new workouts customized to our individual goals, body limitations and injuries. He provides nutrition and body maintenance advice and is just an all-around upbeat, fun guy to train with. Money well spent.
