I have been taking Steph Snyder classes for like 20ish years (is that possible? ). I love the dharma talks, the structured pace and flow, the kirtan and her command of a room. Her human side is incredible.
I changed things up a bit and took a Roy Gan class today (subbing for Steph) and loved it. I took Roy’s classes long ago at yoga garden. I appreciate Roy’s enthusiasm, whimsy, care for students, and inspiring way to find yourself doing challenging things. Excited to see Roy at Love Story!

Pros: 1. The instructor, Betsy, played the accordion at the beginning and the end of the class and her voice is really nice. 2. There are plenty of showers stalls available. But make sure to bring your own towels.
Cons: 1) The class did not start or end on time. 2) The sequencing and cues can use a lot of work. The sequencing felt choppy and repetitive. I lost count of how many down dogs and push ups she made us do where there could have been so many other poses we can try! 3) The playlist had a weird mix of classical+ pop music. Some of the music was also distracting for the class - instructor played concert music with lyrics that even included clapping in the sound track. 4) lots of class time spent on chanting without explaining what the chants even mean.

I LOVE Anthony’s Rocco’s classes at the Valencia location of Love Story! He is really great at discussing the fundamentals of the movements and why each is done, which helps me not only with my technique but also what I get out of the individual poses/flows! The classes are also unique in that you can ask questions during the explanations to clarify anything you’re confused on. Anthony also has so much expertise from such a variety of teachers and schools of thought, which makes him an invaluable resource. He also takes time to learn everyone’s name, check in with them, and even introduce them to each other. This perspective makes the class feel genuinely like a community, which is a rare experience. I highly recommend his classes, he’s truly one of the best teachers I’ve ever had!

This review is for instructor Stephanie Snyder.
After class, I mustered up the courage to introduce myself and offer feedback on the pronunciations of some of the words, specifically Om. I told the instructor that I felt uneasy during the class because her incorrect pronunciation took away my focus and took away from the proper harness of energy that benefits the class. Her incorrect words are being taught to large classes (approx 60 at a time), that are then mindlessly repeating it.
Her response was broken into three parts “My instructor taught me it that way.” “Sorry you feel uneasy.” “I feel sorry for you.” “Don’t let it take away from your night.” They were delivered snarky and rude.
Her response didn’t offer any acknowledgement or gratitude for the feedback. It came from a place of defense rather than openness to learning and listening. This feels antithetical to the practice of yoga.
Her response made me feel really uneasy, as I was the only Hindu (that I could visibly) see. To negate my experience and culture is wrong.
More than that, the instructor chooses gentrified songs in her playlist and sings “Jai Mata” on her harmonium in the most absurd way possible. It’s like the most opera way to call God.
I also kindly let the instructor know that she was doing many things right but perhaps her song choice could be better. Again, her response was rude.
As a person of color, I will never come back to this studio again after my horrible experience with this instructor.
Also Stephanie, maybe practice what you preach, and bring some positive energy to your life and practice.

Ah I can't emphasize this enough—this is a special place with lukewarm and passionate teachers and staff. I had my first yoga class there, and since then I'm hooked. Couldn't be more grateful for an amazing intro from one of the teachers, Mia. The classes are intense in the best way, and teachers bring out your best creative expression of body movement in the class (in contrast to rigid practice). Many of the ppl around you in class are long-time practitioners who you learn so much from!
The space is modern, incredibly clean with all amenities you need to get your yoga in, shower and out. Very convenient times everyday. Couldn't recommend enough!

Unfortunately, several of us were robbed while attending class, which was really disappointing given the studio’s great environment and talented teachers. While their safety measures are currently limited, I do appreciate that one of the founders personally reached out to discuss the incident and explore ways to improve security. I believe they are taking this seriously and will be more vigilant moving forward, so the studio can truly be a place where yogis can relax and feel safe. I'll be giving them another chance, but I'll make sure to lock up my belongings or keep them with me during class.

Pros
- Mia Rose is awesome. Love the energy
- Shower & locker rooms are nice to have

Cons
- Tacky anti-bike lane sign in the front window. Many of your clients use that bike lane every day.
- Minimal variety in class offerings after 4pm
- Overall vibe feels a little serious and inauthentic

Another yoga studio that insists on playing loud music with lyrics and mic'ing up their instructor. I personally don't find it relaxing to having the instructor guiding me over loud poppy music with references to god, but there must be an audience for it since the class was packed.
They also started class close to 10 minutes late.

Had a bit of a snag in setting up my wife and i’s class pass but it was admittedly complicated (didn’t want it to start until after Christmas) and apparently I was emailing an out of date address. extremely crowded, no ventilation
I went for a class which filled to the brim, where mats were barely 2 inches apart from each other by the time class started. It was a normal non-hot yoga class, but the room was steaming within 10 minutes of class starting, and the temperature was way too high for what we signed up for. The ground was wet when I walked to get some water to drink, probably some combination of sweat and condensation. Would definitely not recommend. Try Haum instead

An Exhilarating Journey of Mind and Body with Paxtyn Montes at Love Story Yoga
Stepping into Paxtyn Montes’s class at Love Story Yoga was nothing short of transformative. The 75-minute practice in the heart of Valencia/Mission District, San Francisco, was an exceptional blend of heat, rhythm, and soulful yoga.
Paxtyn started us off with a harmonium-accompanied dharma talk and chant, setting a tone of introspection and community. The class then seamlessly transitioned into a warm-up, coupled with focused breathing exercises. But it was the long, single-side standing sequences that truly set the stage for a challenging yet rewarding experience. Paxtyn’s guidance through these sequences was a masterclass in itself - her unique instruction and variations brought a fresh perspective to poses I thought I knew well.
The studio’s warmth intensified the experience, turning my yoga mat into an island amidst a sea of sweat, symbolizing the release of all that was weighing me down. Paxtyn’s class was more than just physical exertion; it was an energetic liberation, expelling bothersome thoughts and aligning me with the present moment.
A word of advice for those who might struggle with background music - grab a spot towards the front to catch every word of Paxtyn’s clear instructions. And let’s not forget her singing - a voice so captivating it blends seamlessly into the class, enhancing the experience without overwhelming it. The music selection was spot-on, present yet unobtrusive, adding layers to our practice without stealing the spotlight.
In short, a session with Paxtyn at Love Story Yoga is a must. It’s a journey of self-discovery, physical challenge, and mental release. I left feeling rejuvenated, and I’m already planning my next visit. Paxtyn Montes, you’ve earned a returning yogi in me!

I been here twice so far. Once I took the masterclass which was basic, sorry to say but honestly boring and not challenging at all. I mean give something for people who expect to learn something new beyond dancers pose.
Second time I took vinyasa which was great and interesting flow but in both if the times there was an attitude problem starting with receptionists gossiping about students and then teacher would join. Kinda weird vibe.

this is the worst yoga studio i’ve ever been to. they packed 100+ people in a humid room, with barely any room to comfortably do yoga poses. they also allow late people to enter 20 mins into class, which is extremely disruptive. they clearly only care about making as much money as possible. the front desk staff have negative energy and are unwelcoming.
and why does no one talk about the cultural appropriation of the hindu god chanting?! it is very inappropriate and random for these white women instructors to aggressively chant hindu gods without any context or explanation on what it means, and to force everyone else to join them in the chants, taking up nearly half the class time. i didn’t come here to sing about hindu gods, i came here to do yoga.

I’m mostly posting this so that the owners are aware and this doesn’t happen to anyone else, I don’t want to place the blame on anyone and everything ended up okay BUT I was locked in the building for about an hour and a half because I was taking a shower downstairs at the conclusion of the 8-9pm class, and upon coming upstairs at 9:15 found that all staff had left and the door was locked with an additional locked gate in front of that. The locker room doors said that the locker rooms closed at 9:30, plus I have showered at this time every time I’ve come to this class previously and had no issue (if anything an employee will call into the locker room to see if anyone is still in there, but that didn’t happen this time). Long story short, had to have the police get me out with bolt cutters. Not how I expected my night to go!

Terrible experience. Worst yoga studio in SF.
There is no limit on the number of people who can attend a class.
It’s EXTREMELY crowded and by that, I mean that there is literally no space to move. If you move too much, you risk hitting someone.
The instructor did not seem to think that it was too crowded or that this was a problem. In fact, he looked around and mentioned that there is place for a few more people- which almost seemed like a joke.
It’s also incredibly hot and since the class so full and there is basically no ventilation, it becomes extremely difficult to breathe.
Do not waste your time or money on this.

Strangely culty and full of cultural appropriation without any explanation of what’s happening or what the chants you’re being told to say mean.
The studio was grossly cramped to the point that it was difficult not to hit others during the poses - I both had someone stick their foot in my face and accidentally stuck my own hand into my neighbors back on accident.
Studio doesn’t offer water, except in tiny 2oz cups, which seems like it should be basic courtesy.
There is no ventilation in the studio at all, so everyone was dripping in sweat and gasping for breath. Floor was literally wet with sweat and this class was not advertised as a hot yoga class.

Really great classes but so uncomfortable and weird that all the Caucasian women instructors keep “calling out to” Hindu gods and goddesses as if they were actually worshippers. The motivational messages about letting go of worries and loving yourself would be equally valuable without culturally appropriating Durga and Kali.

Terrible experience: the class I took was not advertised as a hot yoga class. It really was, especially after 20mn in an overcrowded yoga class.
Not mentioning that yoga will be in a heated room is dangerous for people who have specific health conditions.
I had to leave the class halfway, the front desk person had 0 care, did not even apologize or said they would change the description of the class. So much for a « Love Flow » as advertised.

Uncomfortable, unsafe, and grossly gentrified.
1) the class had >30 attendees but did not require masks, which is against San Francisco City guidelines even when checking vaccination status.
2) the doors to the building were locked so no one could leave during class and the front desk was unattended when I tried to leave (the two attendees were having a coffee break down the street)
3) the random appropriation of Hindu culture without any context for students was seriously inappropriate. A description on the class description would have been the least this studio could offer.

The space is open and clean and the location is located near BART.
While the studio is open to all, it lacks in diversity, which is something which is lacking for studios beyond Love Story. While the price point is on-par for other studios in the area, it unfortunately does not allow it to be (monetarily) accessible for many, further promoting the homogenous nature of many studios.

SF has a community of elite yoga teachers. Stephanie Snyder, co-founder and instructor of LSY, definitely falls in this category. For a while it was her following alone that kept the lights on until the studio got traction. The prices might shock you and if they do, don't worry this happens to most of us. It comes down to the fact that you're paying the prices your paying for the talent. While you have several other studios within walking distance to pick from this is the studio you go to when you want your butt kicked. If you're a seasoned yogi and leave yoga frustrated if the class was too mellow then you're prayers have been answered by LSY. It's a great workout and they also have showers to clean up after class ( a luxury lacking from most studios in the city) If you're looking for more affordable yoga go down the street to donation based Yoga For The People.

The design of this space limits Stephanie’s flow to be more advanced as there was no air circulation in the room. Low ceiling, no windows, and a hundred bodies make it worse. That was the easiest class I took from Stephanie with a bunch of basic asanas and everyone was sweating like crazy and trying to inhale. The studio needs better cleaning. It smells bad from the lobby down to the restroom downstairs.

I really wanted to love this studio. Unfortunately I can't.
It is in some ways wonderful. The teachers are some of the best. The front desk staff are super friendly, helpful, and efficient. The overall design of the place is simple, minimalist in a way, but very thoughtful. There are showers downstairs! And lockers with codes for anyyone can use. Even deodorant and body lotion. Everything is clean and well taken care of. The location is 2 blocks from the 16th street mission BART, so easily accessible.
It makes me sad how expensive classes and even packages are. I get it, the rent, showers, upkeep... I wonder if more could have been done to make yoga more accessible to the community. Cheaper classes at odd times? Less expensive membership?
Speaking of odd times, there's a missed opportunity to offer really early morning classes, starting 6-6.30. The schedule is pretty much the same as any other studio around.
Another issue, nearly a deal breaker for me, is how loud the studio is. Even before a busy class, if there are several conversations going on, the sound bounces off bare walls and low ceiling, and amplifies the chit chat noise to almost intolerable level. If a teacher plays music and instructs over that, that's also loud. Tonight I went there for a Kirtan. Again, really wanted to love it: heard half the band before, heard great things about the rest of it. It was for a good cause, too. I had to leave half way through, because it was unpleasantly and probably dangerously loud. Took a while for my hearing to recover. One last touch, hand dryers in the bathrooms, while eco and all (thoughtful) sound like jet engines. I've been wiping my hands on my shirt and avoiding other hand washers a lot.
I'll still pay close to $20 per class to study with one great teacher there who doesn't play music in classes, and maybe will bring earplugs to wear before the class, but can't love the place as much as I wished I would or recommend it to anyone sensitive or quiet.

A fine example of a gentrification yoga studio. Great welcoming fronterior, but that's where it ends. The studio is in a basement with pillars obstructing views, the charge for renting mats and towels is overpriced @ $2 as are the classes that are more expensive than most studios around. There are no water cups, which is basic courtesy, they recommend you buy mason jars from them should you want some water. After a week of sampling, I found the classes to be more Bro-yoga or Faux-yoga types, building muscle in Yoga class is always a bad idea.
