I’m so happy I found Mats Gymnastics! This place has so much character the moment you walk in. It’s such a safe and welcoming space for both kids and adults to learn or practice gymnastics at any level.
Honestly, I’ve been terrified to try anything gymnastics-related ever since I broke my elbow when I was 10, attempting to do a cartwheel. But Rachel completely changed that for me. She’s so calm, patient, and encouraging. She started me off with small maneuvers just to help me feel comfortable and build my confidence again. Every time I come in, I feel a little braver, and now I’m actually working toward doing a cartwheel again (something I never thought I would be able to do!).
If you’re an adult wanting to learn the basics, build strength and flexibility, or just try something new, this is the place. No judgment, just a fun environment to experiment, and awesome people. Mat, Rachel, and everyone I’ve met there have been so kind and supportive. They’ve got beginner classes and membership options too. Can’t wait for my next session!

Possibly the last true “third space” left in Los Angeles, Mat’s gym gives everyone from retired college gymnasts, aspiring little kids, and those of us grown ups who want to learn a backflip between our 9-to-5’s, a safe space to learn, challenge ourselves, and realize just how out of reach our Olympic dreams were 😂 no matter what your skill level is, Coach Matt and Rachel will meet you where you’re at and the welcoming cast of regulars will make you feel at home every time.

This gym is my home away from home and the place I want to be everyday with my best friend! Before coming to Mats Gym, I knew little to nothing about gymnastics and what it means to truly be part of a community. Matt has taken me under his wing and I have been with him for a few years now. I can now do things I never thought my body could or would do! I feel like my self confidence, my muscles, my mindfulness, and my overall life experiences have grown so much because of the beautiful Mori family and the community they have helped enrich. I am so blessed to have found such a giving space and group of people. The gym is so much more than just the physical building itself, but as Matt always says “it’s the people”, its more so the energy, flavor, and care that they bring to so many students like me. The relationships I’ve built at this gym are ones I hope to hold onto for the rest of my life. It’s so easy to be vulnerable in a place that feels like home, that is so warm and welcoming to any ability/experience level, age, background, shape, size, anything! Thank you, Matt <3

As a neophyte tumbler, Mat's Gymnastics is a cozy community gym that boasts everything you need, especially for individual instruction.
Matt was a great instructor who makes you feel comfortable with progressive drills, going into actual handsprings and tucks. The trampoline rig(!) was incredibly helpful and puts you at ease when first learning these skills.
Parking is plentiful in the area, and the open gym/class pricing is very reasonable.

People were really nice and friendly. But just bc they were nice and friendly doesnt mean I was taught well. I'm new new with zero experience to gymnastics and was told to do a front handstand roll bc I believed the teacher would know more than me so I decided to try it even though my body was saying no. When I tried it I landed wrong and heard a crunchy sound around my chest rib cage area and then I felt pain around it. I went to the doctor and told me I have a rib fracture and now I'm taken off my daily exercises for 2 months! I think for future clients if they have zero experience they should start them off more beginner level. Also lesson learned if ur body is telling u not to do something listen to that instead of the teacher. Stay safe. Again they were really nice but bc of improper teaching to my skill level I'm in bed rest for 2 months till my rib fracture heals.

This is a wonderful family run business. The adult beginner/intermediate classes are welcoming to people of all skill levels and backgrounds. Everyone who participates is encouraging of one another and the coaches are respectful and knowledgeable and encourage you to push past your fears and hang-ups and just go for it.

I’ve gone to this place on, and off for years. It’s got this great retro feel to it, kinda like training in a gymnastics gym that Rocky Balboa would’ve gone to. Everyone there is very nice, and it’s kinda like family oriented. And, yes it’s not as clean as it could be, but that’s fine. But, if I did have to say something about the gym from a point of constructive criticism. It would be that the owner & and main instructor there Coach Mori has a very short temper. It’s like he can fly into a fit of yelling, and anger at the drop of a hat. Sometimes it would seem that he can be uncompromising in what seem to be outdated, & nonsensical standards & points of view.
For example: I was just in there today. I asked if I could take a picture of his class schedule & he said no, because I look like a coach, and he didn’t want me to steal his schedule ideas. I explained to him that I was actually just interested in taking class & the open practice session. He said something to the effect of, “ oh well just come back after 5 o’clock when my son is here, he handles everything I just teach, if, and, but etc.... then I asked if I could take a picture, or write down a note of the schedule or phone number, but nope. My further questions seemed to anger him as he began to raise his voice.
So, let’s recap I couldn’t take a picture of the schedule that was on the desk right in front of me, I can’t write down the phone number to call, & and now I’m basically being yelled at just for asking for information to become a willfully paying patron of the establishment. I mean come on, I was being polite & even a little scared of him raising his voice more than he already had & going into a complete nuclear melt down, as I’ve been on the receiving end many years ago, as well as witnesses him go full melt down on other people in the past.
This place has been in my neighborhood since before I was born. I used to love going to practice with like minded people to improve on & learn new skills. I moved away for a few years, and have been looking to reconnect with my old self, as well as other in my community.
Despite all the somewhat negative comments meant to serve purely as constructive criticism, coach Mori is an incredibly talented individual with a wealth of experience when it comes to gymnastics, it’s just that I happen to think that he may need to go check out some anger management classes.
I’m sorry Coach Mori, I love you, but you can be pretty rough around the edges sometimes, & to be honest I’ve heard from lots of people that used to practice there a lot & take classes, don’t anymore because of this very behavior I’ve spoken of, in this review.

I've been going to this gym for 9 years. Its not a facility with state of the art equipment. This is more of a chill place that comes with a more family feel since its family owned. People who go here are mostly locals or people that have been coming for years.
Most of the equipment is old but it works. Also quite peaceful most days and is great for training things you don't want your industry to see.
