I went over to this rock climbing gym last weekend with a friend, and honestly had a pretty good time. The place isn’t huge, but they’ve got a nice mix of beginner and tougher routes, so I didn’t feel out of place even though I’m not super experienced. The staff was friendly enough and gave a few quick tips without making it awkward. The walls and mats looked clean, and the vibe overall felt relaxed. It did get a little crowded in the afternoon, but nothing crazy. If you’re looking for a spot to get a fun workout in or try something different, it’s worth checking out.

Amazing in every way. I climb here and spend free time here to study, take yoga classes. Even bring meals to heat up in the microwave provided. Bathroom has feminine products and moisturizer. Yoga mats are provided. There are areas to stretch and study. Really thoughtful touches. Much appreciated.
Front desk staff are always soooo helpful. Ample parking. Generous hours. Good music and reasonable volume. Kids friendly too!

It was an alright climbing gym. Nothing crazy about it. I’ve been climbing for about 3 years and have been to a lot of gyms across the country. The staff was super nice and courteous. The bouldering set up was pretty cramped despite going at what was said to be a not busy time and holds are super greasy and over chalked making the grades feel harder than they were. Overall not terrible but definitely feels overpriced.

Even if you just boulder this gym is in a league on its own in the San Diego area. Really fun setting, great community, and enough space to do whatever you want even when it’s busy. Don’t waste your time at the other bouldering gym in town, just come here and enjoy trying hard. You can even use the weights when it’s raining! Wow! Thanks mesa rim!

(Beginner) Loved it. Another review was much different, but I personally did not smell a feet smell, the air did not feel stale. I felt ac. If your feet stink, there is a spray called Odoban, i like the "night ice" one, spray on all your shoes/sandals, trust me its amazing. It also kills sickness. Home depot has it,($5.47) Dollar tree sometimes has it (3$). Anyway In my experience this gym is kept clean, the instructor i had was good, quick to help, very safety forward. All staff were good, very pleasent. It is fun if you have a good attitude.

Dude, if you want a cool place to climb, check this out. The staff is awesome, and they treat you like a VIP. Duncan saw me waiting at the desk, and I walked off before they could help. He chased me down, "Vincent, what can I do for ya?" I love when the staff cares. Good job, Duncan. Pictured is Duncan and my wife so you know who this awesome Mesa Rim staff is.

Was going to this gym since 2017. The best ever Exersizes for my strength! I was a fitness instructor and a personal trainer for over 20 years, but never been so strong until I started to climb at Mesa Rim. They have even small gym to train every part of the body m, Youga and core classes, lots of events and surprisingly very tasty coffee. Also the staff is very friendly there. I do recommend it to everyone around me.

What an incredible team who runs the place. I visited this location with 9 people total in my group, and they handled & hosted us like bosses from start to finish. Mesa Rim is a huge indoor climbing facility with tons of amenities you can take advantage of with a membership and even just a day pass. They have a bouldering, lead rope, and top rope section, a small kids climbing wall, full gym, locker rooms, saunas, classes, a shop, including gear and an impressive food section that has snacks, drinks galore, made fresh handcrafted burritos, and even ramen... Black Shin cup of noodles for extra points. You'll find all kinds of walls suited for all kinds of levels, and they even change every so often, giving their members something fresh to always look forward to. I can't even imagine how much work that takes... My husband and I decided to make a conscious effort to expose our 3 kids to as many activities as we can, and rock climbing has been turned out to be one of the best enriching activities ever. In such little time, they've grown so much and I can only imagine how these skills, failures, and victories will translate to the real world.
Notes
*The 1 hr belay course is included in membership. Awesome, straightforward course that allows you to put your skills into action immediately after completion for top roping. Take the roping test anytime in the future, even the following day, and receive lifetime certification. Sign up for class online.
*Each membership comes with 1 guest pass/month, and that includes kid's memberships.
*My home location in Reno offers a week trail for first timers. It would be worth inquiring if this location offers one as well.
*Plenty of parking available, but spaces are right. From the main road, hang left and find the main entrance on the side of the building.
*Gear included for members
*Seating area available for snacking. Watch others climb as you eat.
Thanks to everyone on my visit on July 3, 2025. For such an incredible day of fun and adventure.

Best gym in San Diego by a mile. They offer way more routes, and reset them relatively frequently.
Update: I have over a year of days climbed at this gym now, and have tried ~15 different gyms around the world and Mesa Rim is still my favourite.
Update 2: 25 gyms, mesa rim still my favorite. Lately grading has been a bit all over the place with half the routes being traditionally graded and half starting to match other gyms (way higher grade than outdoor difficulty). Also 13s and 14s are being set less frequently, with over a month period with none in the gym.
I hope someday they will allow dogs like most other gyms!

Mesa Rim Mission Valley is an exceptional rock climbing gym that stands out as one of the best I’ve visited globally. As someone who works in the climbing industry at a gym in Vancouver and has explored numerous climbing facilities worldwide, I can confidently say that Mesa Rim delivers an outstanding experience.
The gym features impressively high walls that cater to both novice and advanced climbers, with a wide variety of routes that are thoughtfully set to challenge and engage climbers of all skill levels. The bouldering and sport climbing areas are particularly well-designed, offering a diverse range of problems and routes that keep the experience fresh and exciting.
In addition to the climbing walls, the gym is equipped with high-quality workout equipment, making it an excellent space for cross-training and fitness. The facility is clean, modern, and well-maintained, creating a welcoming environment for climbers.
What truly sets Mesa Rim apart is its friendly and inclusive community. The staff are knowledgeable, approachable, and passionate about climbing, which enhances the overall experience. Whether you’re a local climber or visiting from out of town, you’ll feel right at home here.
For anyone in San Diego—whether you’re a seasoned climber or just starting out—Mesa Rim Mission Valley is a must-visit. It’s a world-class facility that combines excellent climbing terrain, top-notch amenities, and a supportive community. I highly recommend it and look forward to returning on my next trip to the area!

I will be honest, objective and get to the point.
1. The smell of feet is very strong from the moment you arrive, persistent and there is space for windows but the air flow is zero.
(I have been in very gyms and the smell in this one was the worst for me)
2. Lead climbing is the sport I liked practicing yet this gym did not allow me to do it, their test is very ambiguous, nearly by your own (red flag in any test), and the Staff is not aware of you to continue carrying it out.
3. I demonstrated complete equipment handling techniques and even the test supervisor said and I quote: “You can also do that to belay”. And saying “…that’s for leading.” Assuring that he knew the maneuver and saw that I performed it without problem. Despite those 2 forceful statements he proceeded to fail me in the test. After observing the climbing area I found that there were people whose technique was not perfect but who were climbing. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ (INSERT SINGLE CLIP. Don't take more out of respect for people, the belayer releases the rope. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️)
4. They never offered to give me a belay, I mentioned 3 times to different people on the staff that it was my first visit to their gym (I was Alone), there were more than 9 route setters in another area, they had good staff to be able to belay someone and check if a) they know how to climb b) know the commands and really use them c) know how to point and climb with technique. Those are points to evaluate in a real exam!!
5. Anyway, thanks but no thanks, they are not like that on the rock, it does not smell bad and the view is prettier. 🫰🏼🧗🏻♂️

Mesa Rim Mission Valley is a wonderful place to enjoy indoor climbing. The staff are amazing, friendly, and knowledgeable, always ready to assist and create a welcoming atmosphere for members. I counted eight setters who worked diligently each week to set new routes. I was fortunate to meet Josie, Duncan, and Louie at the desk; they were incredibly helpful and friendly. Look up Josie Fouts on the internet, she is the bomb. Mesa Rim in Mission Valley is a true gem. It's so exceptional that Magnus Midtbo and Chris Heria have even visited. Pictures are from the early opening time of the day. They do not have family membership, I think that may make this a true friendly, family environment where the whole family can enjoy their precious time.

Such a great gym. I wish I still lived in San Diego. The staff is knowledgeable, and care about the safety of their guests. They not only explain the rules to the new climbers but they are constantly doing safety walks to ensure guests are being safe. The staff is also super friendly and is always willing to help.
I live in the Midwest now and let me say the gyms here are nowhere near as good as Mesa Rim. In terms of safety, setting , and general vibes.

World class setting; deserves 6 stars, but apparently google hasn’t revised the star grade system to include S6. Extremely inclusive environment and consistently looking to improve guest experiences through classes, events, and creative setting. If you’ve climbed for a while, come check out the bouldering, ropes, moon/kilter/circuit board and all the cracks you can imagine. If you’ve never climbed, this place will welcome you with everything you need from the gear to community, front desk gives everyone a tour their first day- super approachable for all ages and fitness levels. I've been to 20 or 30 different climbing gyms all over the world, and a member of Mesa for over a decade. We are so lucky to have not just a world class gym in San Diego, but a chain of gyms. Mesa will give you everything you need if you are a frequent climber, most importantly a wonderful community of people, and also a fantastic variety of interesting problems. Is it expensive, yes, so it's not for everybody, but if you're into climbing it's absolutely worth the price.

Really nice gym with everything you would want. Grades are tough and felt somewhere between kilterboard and moonboard difficulty. Only main complaint was the larger holds would block your desired body positioning. The density was good, just a little more care when placing large holds since it felt a little awkward trying to flag around them at times.

Great gym! I always like when I go to a gym and the grades match up with outdoor grades. This gym might even be a little sandbagged haha! My only complaint is that the boulder section was set a little too dense for my preference. It’s nice when things are spread out a little more (not too much!) so you don’t have to worry about hitting other holds and not seeing holds on your route. Highly recommend a visit!

The floor pads are extremely firm, not beginner/kid friendly at all (bouldering area). The firm padding makes you feel apprehensive of climbing to the top in case of a fall. It's bad for the knees too... falling from 15 feet... I've seen a handful of injuries when I still lived in CA at Mesa Rim hitting these mats. My daughter also felt unsafe to climb with full confidence while visiting.
We were just visiting from Georgia, where there are mostly plush/soft floor pads.
This is my only gripe - the firm pads
Great facility otherwise

As a travel RN, I've tried my fair share of climbing gyms in the country. So far, this one is my favorite. There is ample room for both sport and boulder with even a crack climb I think I saw...and if you don't have a belay partner, they announce over the loudspeaker every so often they are pairing up singles! The staff are very friendly and helpful and not condescending like in some other gyms I have been to.
Free amenities with membership include:
They have a light - up moon board in the cool kids corner (that I haven't had the courage to get on yet), a full gym, workout/strengthening classes, and yoga classes all day with passionate and involved teachers. I have been practicing yoga since college in 2016 off and on but there are so many fresh and helpful techniques I've learned at MR that have encouraged me to take my practice a few steps further. I went to a class one evening that involved a sound bath with crystal bowls and I completely forgot that I was in a climbing gym!
My only gripes are that membership is a bit pricey but that is California and there are only three treadmills where one seems to be out of order every week.

I AM BLOWN AWAY BY HOW AMAZING THIS STAFF IS. I have very little knowledge of bouldering. I first met Johnathan earlier in the day to get a tour showed me what they had to offer. I couldn't climb at the time; I ask so many questions and he answered all of them. I was given a free pass; I climbed and came back to ask Johnathan more questions at the desk and would go back to climb. I left with a HUGE smile on my face. The next day I came and saw Sabian. I ask more questions and felt so comfortable talking to ALL the staff. He showed me shoes, what all the differences there were in all of them. I think we tried on at least 4-5 different sizes & Chandler came along to help in this process and it was fantastic within 2 days, I had everything I needed to begin my new climb adventures. WHOM ever is the manager of these 3 and the guy with the curly hair (we discuss food a lot) give these guys something special they are VERY IMPOTANT TO MESA RIM CLIMBIMG COMMUNITY!!!!! You can't go wrong with this gym, everyone here is nice and helps you if you are new, socially and physically. Yoga, the gym, the people, the calm relaxing environment can't be beat. CHEERS GUYS!!!!

Overall nice gym (albeit ridiculously busy), but am currently disappointed in their billing department for failure to respond to multiple requests to issue me a refund for being billed after my membership was cancelled. Managers and billing are never available when I call and they have not offered to call me back. (UPDATE - They had put my credit card on someone else's account in a different state! Be very careful with your financial information here. Do not use your debit card as you may never get the money back. I had to dispute their charges on my credit card in order to get my money back. All they said was "oops").
I was also irritated while I was still a member, because they had me sign the online waiver six visits in a row, because they "couldn't find it on file". The resolution was they had me sign it on paper, which I wish they would have done after the first 2 times. Overall, they really need to figure out their systems management and customer service.
Last thing I'll note is that I think it's really great that the space is very accepting and welcoming of queer people, but is still very intimidating for anybody new to the sport. I was surprised to see and hear much bigger egos than at my regular gym. Massive bros are constantly SCREAMING and grunting obnoxiously while they climb. Guess this was just not the vibe I was looking for.

This is a good gym with a ton of different ratings and grades. I'm visiting SD but I have to concur with the ratings talking about how sand bagged the boulder ratings are. The 2's are 3-3+other places. The 3s feel like 4's, the 5's are absolutely 6-6+ elsewhere.
With all this being said, you'll have a great time if you just target 1-2 grades below where you've been climbing. Definitely a gym that models outdoor grades much better than any other.

I visited this location as a guest from Chicago with 1.5+ years of bouldering experience. I was excited to try Mesa Rim but left quite underwhelmed and disappointed. The bouldering holds were worn out and slippery, the bouldering space (and the entire gym for that matter) was very cramped, and the bouldering rating system was not defined anywhere (I didn’t see any explanation posted in the gym nor was it explained on the website). The $30 single day pass does not seem worth the price.

Been climbing here for almost 1 year now. My experience as a beginner was different than other reviews here, I got informed well by the staff and felt welcome. It does get over crowded specially on weekebd days when kids are off from school, but before 11AM and after 9PM the gym is basically empty.
The yoga & fitness classes offered are the icing on the cake. A yoga studio membership is more than a monthly membership here at Mesa Rim. It can feel super “bro” ish when it’s really crowded but that’s just motivation to stay athletic

Spent an awesome afternoon here. First time indoor climbing for myself and my girlfriend and lots to learn. Trista did an absolutely awesome job teaching us the "ropes". We felt well prepared and ready to take on the walls.
Lots of choices in terms of difficulty gradings. Rope climbing and bouldering, gym, table tennis, treadmills...anything one could want to have a proper workout on a Friday afternoon.
We spent well over 4 hours here and called it one only because the body gave in eventually.
We've had a fabulous time. Will be back soon for sure!

Came to San Diego for a few days and found this gym to keep up with climbing. They have a decent price for a weekly membership which is perfect for people who are just visiting but planning to climb for a few times. The grading is a little bit harder than my local gym (maybe it’s just me not used to the route setters’ style) and quite rough on the fingers and skin. I’d love to see some more technical boulders, maybe a little bit more slabs. Overall a very good gym!

Great gym for climbing. A little busy at times and can get crowded. If I were rating on just the climbing, easily 4 stars.
However, this is a very woke gym. Feels unwelcoming for anyone who just wants to get some exercise and not be blasted with a political agenda. Climbing is for everyone... But apparently here, it's not.

Fantastic gym for serious climbers. Consistent route rotation. High quality climbs. Staff has always been pleasant to interact with, for me. My main qualm is cost of the membership. It's also a bit cramped inside. I use the weights area heavily, but it's clearly not a priority for the gym.

Could use more people inside, I had too much space around me. And I could walk around without crossing paths with people

Went for a boulder session during my trip in SD. Looks like a great climbing gym overall. But the boulder setting feels really hard to me compared to my home gyms. I flashed most V3s in my home gym but I couldn’t do a single one here.

The gym environment was not inclusive. Additionally, I was surprised at how bad the yoga class was. I’ve ever been to all kinds of yoga classes over the last decade and this had to be one of the worst, which was disappointing. I was debating getting a membership, but after this I can’t justify it. The yoga class was poorly run, inauthentic, and highly pretentious. Also the floors were super dirty, so I really don’t see the appeal of this place unless you want to climb with granola bros.

Great gym, fun atmosphere, encouraging patrons and attentive employees. I’ve been climbing here for years and it’s been a blast. Often been intimidating stepping into a gym, but never got that feel from Mesa rim. I’ve climbed at the mission valley and the Mira Mesa one. Both are great. Fun and challenging blundering walls, awesome weight lifting equipment, treadmills, this place has it all for me. I’ve really come to enjoy the positive and engaging atmosphere this gym has cultivated.

Super high walls, cool routes.
Lots of nice people, very nice stuff.
Includes good work out area, chilling area, you can work on your laptop.
Cool bouldering. Everything is clean and maintained, good lighting.
This gym truly deserves highest mark.

I wish the team members in the front would of told me like they did for everyone else that we need chalk for our hands when climbing the walls knowing it was our first time rock climbing and have never been or done before . It was not very welcoming place.. especially when it was our first time going to this place I wish the team would have been more informative of what is needed and not just treat us like we didn’t belong there .

Mesa was always my favorite place to practice yoga, so when I was ready to take the next step in my Yoga journey, participating in my 200 hour there was a no brainer. The instructors were/are so kind and knowledgeable. I learned so much about myself, anatomy, and community, among other things. If you are interested in yoga teacher training, do consider Mesa Rim.

The walls an equipment are great, but there’s a culture problem at Mesa Rim. They present a public image that is progressive (they put up posters about bystander intervention, have adaptive offerings for disabled athletes, and have posted gender affirming signs in the bathrooms) but, that said, there is no culture of community care here when it comes to Covid. I climb here multiple times a week and am almost always the only person wearing a mask. It’s clear that the company values profit over heath-I have requested that they create designated times when climbers are expected to wear masks and received no response. It really saddens me to know that this community is only progressive and supportive in a skin-deep way.

I Love this gym. Definitely one of the best out here for sure. Staff is friendly and the place has a lot of features to have fun on. Free training classes to get on to their bigger walls which I also appreciated because it’s a bunch of fun.

This gym membership has been worth every penny. It gets crowded during peak hours, but if you can avoid the crowds it’s great. I also like the fitness classes there. My instructor Darwin was super knowledgeable and he even took time after class to teach me some exercises for injury prevention. If you’re looking for a trainer, I highly recommend Darwin at Mesa Rim Mission Valley

I felt like I had imposter syndrome here. I've been climbing for 5 years, I'm a solid V3.... and I was STRUGGLING on every v1? Like what? Maybe my gym rates higher, but I honestly was watching newbies STRUGGLING HARD on V0s. This doesn't seem right to me.
I was travelling alone and didn't get to top rope. Maybe the rope climbing takes the cake. But it was too packed for my liking, and the grades were humbling/discouraging.
Pictured is are two "V0s" for reference. A white and a yellow.

AMAZING climbing gym! Their walls are super high, the routes are really interesting, the staff is awesome, and the workout area is nicely stocked. Plus, if you're in town for a few days they have a great weekly pass option that's more affordable than multiple day prices. I BADLY wish this was our local gym! We will definitely be back whenever we're in San Diego!

Love this place! Well worth the membership. They change up the routes in a reasonable time frame so always new routes to climb. My only complaint on this location compared to Mira Mesa location is the locker room and showers are smaller and there is no sauna. But that doesn't change my rating, just an opinion.

Absolutely amazing place. So worth it. The facilities are amazing, and on top of that--the staff was so very kind and inviting to us. I had a large group of folks with me, and we were too late to participate in a scheduled class, AND David went out of his way to still teach us the skills we needed to know to get the most out of our experience. He's a great teacher, very reassuring. Shout out to David and Bianca from the front desk (who shares my name) :) We ended up having such an amazing time, I know our group will be back.

I’ve been a member since they opened this location. They recently put up politically leaning signs which is a huge bummer since it has always been a place focused on climbing and community. I brought it to their attention. I’m happy to change this review but only after the sign goes. I’m not interested in what the “woke” want, just climbing with all people accepting each other’s differences.
Update: No change was made.

Lots of routes. Bouldering wall is there if you want it. Traditional gym equipment is nothing fancy but they have an incline treadmill, bench, and free weights which is nice.
Seems like some of the negative reviews gripe on people and crowds which is fair, though like most gyms, climbing or otherwise, that problem is easily remedied by going at open or near close.

Friendly staff even to eccentric middle aged people like me. :) Great climbing gym to bring the kids to as they are included in membership until they are 11. Love all the different climbing options although I stick to the “easy” ones for now. Yoga offering is really good and worth checking out as well. I was super impressed with the classes. Looking forward to the climbing classes that are included as well. Flexibility of having 3 different locations in San Diego is a huge plus, so def worth the price of membership. Cheers and climb on!

5 star Facility/setting, 2 star company policies/practices. front facing staff are friendly, but not terribly knowledgeable or observant (a lot of people who climb here don't know what they are doing in terms of etiquette or belaying, and staff rarely notice/intervene). Company owner(s)/management put profits above the health of the community (specifically when it comes to covid precautions). That is of course their prerogative, they are a for-profit company, it is nonetheless disappointing.

Good: Roped walls are tall and they have a huge overhang section.
Bad: Setting and cracks aren't as good as the Mira Mesa and San Marcos locations. Many of the rope routes do not have draws for leading. Also more crowded than the other locations.
