Recently cancelled a 4+ year membership. Main reason is cost. Second is the gym has become too woke. Im fine with queer nights and the gay pride flag but at least put up an American flag as well. The reason you can have diversity is you live in America! Third reason is the AC cooling issues. Just buy a large industrial floor fan and get a nice cross breeze going. Its not that complicated.
Edit, they put a flag up. Thanks for that!!

Absolutely love this gym! Great for beginners and I feel like it has a good variety of problems for each climbing style.
However, the customer service I received from one of the staff members, Roman, was a complete 180 to what I normally experience at NC and the rest of the gyms.
I'll admit that I was running a little late behind closing, around 2-3 mins after closing, but I had scraped my hand a good amount to where I desperately needed a couple bandages, just to cover them long enough to where I could go home and properly care for them, which wouldn't be for a long time since I had plans already made. Instead of receiving the amount of bandages I needed, to which I explicitly verbalized so that I can just receive the amount I needed to care for my hand and go because I know the staff members were already staying overtime, Roman only gave me two and proceeded to do something else, to where I had to stay longer and ask for more to care for my hand. I was met with reluctance and a disregard for my injuries by being told it was two per person. I'm not sure where that policy came from or when it may have changed because they used to have a little care station past the front desk. But for the price I'm paying each month, I would expect better from all the staff members. :/ I'm glad I haven't had other bad experiences here and anywhere else other than this. This really disappointed me, though, especially when I really needed to take care of my wounds, but felt like I had to beg for supplies to do so.

The gym itself is great. Unfortunately, tonight I encountered a staff member (Roman) who seemed frustrated when I asked for 2 band-aids.
This happened just 2 minutes after closing time (10:02 pm). I was told, βOh but weβre closedβ and βCan I see your hands?β which honestly left me very disappointed.
The gym had just closed, and it felt unnecessary to interrogate a member over a quick, 5-second request. If thereβs a policy against giving small first-aid items after hours (their self-care station was empty), it would be good for Mesa Rim to clarify that β because from a community standpoint, itβs a bad look.

The best climbing center in San Diego county. Huge, wide open, two full levels of climbing space, friendly staff, never overcrowded. Good instructors who prioritize safety. Unlike the Mira Mesa and Mission Valley locations, this one is spacious. Parking is challenging. There is no parking lot, you have to find street parking on Industrial Dr. For climbers, a little hill & a hike wonβt be a problem

I really want to like this gymβ¦the space and walls are beautiful. Unfortunately, most of the lead and bouldering areas are now dominated by competition-style problems, with a heavy focus on dynamic, jumpy, parkour-like moves. While this style has its place, itβs only one aspect of climbing. It doesnβt translate well to outdoor climbing and can alienate climbers who prefer more traditional or technical styles. The facilities are top-notch, but if comp-style problems arenβt your thing, you may want to look elsewhere.

The Mesa Rim, a relatively new establishment located in the northern part of the city, exudes an exceptionally welcoming ambiance. The staff, particularly Jadon who handled our check-in, demonstrated remarkable interpersonal skills, making the journey to the gym worthwhile. While the facility is currently experiencing a manageable influx of visitors, it is anticipated that its popularity will surge in the near future, attracting a substantial clientele. The personnel at this establishment exhibit exceptional social aptitude.

Brand new to the gym. Was hoping for a good climbing experience but we didnβt even get the opportunity to climb. When we walked in we were immediately barked at to close the door behind us. Did not get greeted after that. Walked up to the desk and was ignored so we went over to go fill out the waiver based on what weβve done at previous gyms. Finally we were awkwardly greeted by the front desk and told that we would need to test out for top rope only AFTER we had asked. Did not get an offer to get shown around the gym, did not get told any gym rules, and I was shooed away so that my partner could do the top rope test out. Upon my partner walking up to the ropes she got handed them and the worker said βtie off like youβre the climberβ and then walked away and couldnβt be found for ten minutes. We also werenβt told that we would need to have our own grigri because all the previous gyms weβve been to has them already attached. They didnβt have any to rent either. Because of our previous gym experience we were also unaware on how to attach the grigri to the rope but that didnβt matter we just got told to test out another day and they didnβt offer to teach us how to put it on. While I was waiting for my partner to be done with their test out I was watching the climbers in the gym and not a single worker was calling anyone out for the unsafe climbing I witnessed. I watched a belayer lose control of their rope and let their climber fall 10 feet against the wall, belayers sitting down while the climber is actively going up, and the front desk was left unattended for at least five minutes while we waited for someone to give us a refund of our day pass and we watched people walk in without scanning in. Maybe it was just the workers that day but I will not be coming back to mesa rim.

I love Mesa Rim and rock climbing ! I am back to climbing again after a long break and took a refreshment "Intro to climbing " lesson from Tatiana at Mesa Rim North City. She is not only an instructor but also loves what she does and is eager to share her knowledge she gained during her professional climbing years. Thanks again, Tatiana π₯°

The route setting has been so bad lately the last 6 months. More specifically the sport climbing, they set the same moves on every climb, it feels like they hired boulders with one style and they spam it everywhere on the sport walls.
What happened? The setting was so good a year ago, now I am driving to Mira Mesa and Mission instead. This gym has the best walls, but the worst setting of SenderOne,Mira,Mission,Vertical Hold and Rock Fitness. I love almost everything about this gym, but there needs to be some serious quality control about the sport setting. There is a vibe going around a lot of the climbers who climb 5.11+ think it's-to put it nicely, not good.

Of their 3 locations this may be the biggest. There is a huge bouldering area upstairs, and the rope walls downstairs are huge. Their lead climbing class is really great...3 hrs of learning and actual climbing...and falling (unlike Vertical Hold where the 1st class you take is all mock-lead). The lead-only cave area is massive and fun. The grades are honest and the routes are good.

Great employees at this location!
As a beginner, I was very lucky to receive help from Sam, the coach for my belay training. He is very patient and solid with the lessons; and very professional at selecting suitable shoes and harness in the stores for me!
Lots of thanks to Tatiana and Priscilla as well who helped me on the phone and in person so I can schedule my training and test, also helped me get the pass I need!
Highly recommend this place to others, especially beginners who needs lots of help and support!

100% 5 star review for front desk worker Tatianna: she made our visit so fun, especially for my nephew who is very new to climbing. I cannot say enough nice about this place - clean, awe-inspiring, and a great intro to climbing for kids. Just wonderful and beautiful. So are the people working there. Just a great time in general - it's airy huge and has a great vibe to it. My biggest shout-out goes to Tatianna I have a nephew on the spectrum and anyone with kids knows variables, especially something new and semi-complex like climbing is going to be tough - she could not have been more accommodating, understanding, or just knowledgeable I really really want to let her know it was appreciated, my niece and nephew loved the experience and immediately wanted to go again.

If I could give Mesa Rim North City a billion star review, I absolutely would. After my boyfriend and I bought a one week membership after just wanting to go just for the day, we were driving about an hour each way to go--for all seven days! After going to several climbing gyms, this one is easily the best. It is clean, has a simple layout, and is beyond fun. Also, compared to other gyms, it is not busy, allowing you to do whatever climb you want! There is no stigma and you can be just who you are there. I genuinely love it. I grew up in Utah surrounded by what I thought were amazing climbing gyms. This place is now my favorite!!
Besides this, the staff there are amazing. We were able to go to three yoga classes and all the yoga instructors were fantastic. If you have the chance to go to a restorative yoga class with Alice, do it!
Also, Brandon, Bernardo, Tatiana, and Ava (& one other girl! I forgot her name!!) were absolutely amazing. Their customer service was beyond anything that I have ever seen. They were very approachable and if we didn't live so far away, we would go just to go say hi to them!
We decided on a whim to go to this gym because there are so many that are closer to us! I can't say enough how grateful I am to have chose Mesa Rim at North City. Being able to go here everyday, rather before or after work, has been the highlight of my day. So thank you all at Mesa Rim for giving me one of the best weeks of my life!

Wonderful staff, setting and atmosphere.
Jadon was particularly personable and helpful in our belaying class. He handled beginners kindly and made sure we felt safe on the wall. The whole class he provided while off-duty as well,he is simply a wonderful spirit.
The bouldering section was full of unique and polished routes but seemed graded a bit tougher than my home gym . The long routes were new to me and I have no comparison for them.

This is an incredible destination Climbing gym. The staff here are incredibly friendly, they actually remembered my name the second time I went in. I climbed here about six times during my week in San Diego. It was so sad to leave, the people who climb here are very lucky. The facility is beautiful with tons of top roping and lead. There's bouldering on two floors, the first floor has a small, sparsely set compy style set. Upstairs there's a massive slab, a giant island, and a cave in the back. The quality of the setting is excellent. They set very hard here, lots of big burly moves, shoulder kind of stuff, a couple of dynos. The facility itself is gorgeous, the bathrooms are immaculate, the showers are luxurious, they have a sauna. The people in the gym were super friendly, it's next to a college in a safe neighborhood. There's just nothing negative I could say about this gym. I can't wait to go back next time I'm in San diego.

Came as a total newbie with a few other mom friends who are also newbies. We took the belay class and then did some climbing afterward. Sarah was absolutely amazing as an instructor, kind and patient and great at explaining things. We were able to do quite a bit of climbing after our lesson and it was challenging and invigorating! The best part is that we got to do all of this for free since it was our very first time at any of the Mesa Rim locations. Such an amazing way to try out something new without investing. Just make sure to sign up for the belay class ahead of time.
The facility itself is clean, challenging for any level, and very welcoming for anyone from any walk of life. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. They even have classes for kids!

The location of this gym in north city is a big plus, especially because I can always go down and get some cookies after I finish climbing or some ice cream if the itch needs scratching. This is a newer facility and so most of the amenities are working. (Rip sauna) The community is really fun and the location design is a bit more straight laced then the mission valley Mesa rim. I liked this gym and would like to rate it 4.5 stars, but I'll give it a 5 because my comments are mainly personal preference. The gym was clean and impressive, probably the nicest climbing facility I have ever seen. But I wasn't a huge fan of the vibe. I enjoyed the bouldering routes and area much more than the top rope, but the mats are HARD and I was fairly scared of falling. Top roping routes were a confusing mix of ratings (from some 5.6's being more difficult than some of the 5.10's), and it was unfortunate that a large part of the top roping wall was lead climbing only. Looks like if you climb here, you never get to practice overhangs while top roping unless you lead climb. There are also no autobelays (other than the speed climbing route, which was padlocked when I visited), which is unfortunate that such a new gym would not have any autobelay options. I think if you are a very serious climber, this is a fantastic gym. Personally I would rather go somewhere more practical/with a different vibe. Staff was really nice at this gym though!

Friendly staff, new facility and very well set routes. I especially like the open windows in the bouldering area on the second floor. The fresh breeze and open view makes it feel more like climbing outdoor than just climbing on plastic.

Wow friends this gym is going to be hoppin once CSUSM is open again! Right next to the campus and with common house next door, this location is great for North County climbers and yogis!
All bouldering upstairs, extra tall rope walls, yoga and fitness area with separate entrance. At 10% capacity and with sanitizer and signs about distancing and handwashing all over the place, Mesa has been soooo safe that I feel good going even with my 2 year old and being a high risk individual.

In one word, FRESH! From the open air bay windows in the workout and climbing areas to the grit on the holds, everything feels fresh. I like all of the intricate, well-conceived and crafted design elements of this modern climbing facility. The layout and flow of the building is fun and open. Definitely looking forward to working this location into my Mesa Rim routine. And the neighbors arenβt bad either.

Best climbing gyms in San Diego. The North County location seems to have less lead/top rope climbs than the Mira Mesa and Mission Valley locations, though I've not counted. They definitely have more bouldering than the other locations.

An amazing new addition to the Mesa Rim dynasty!! The open air design of the bouldering area is such a boon.
