First time experience was amazing!! Came here on Saturday after a hiking trip was cancelled. Did the introduction class. Everyone was super friendly and the gym felt very welcoming. The class was informative and goes at your own pace. I got a membership after the class and am excited to go back today!

On Weds the 11th of June my wife and I took a beginner's class. The whole vibe was welcoming and friendly. AC was going and well appreciated. Both my wife and I have lost over 100lbs each. The whole time I felt comfortable. Which is great because since the pandemic I have had issues just leaving my house. After the class we were left to explore. We spent about 2hrs in total. Even though I am incredibly sore the day after we will be back. Good safe place to play out of the heat of the summer for sure.

Honestly years ago when I think it was Maria running it, hated the place. You could tell she didn’t know anything about climbing and it trickledown to the staff. With how it’s ran these days it seems like a 360 degree flip. You go in and people are actually happy to be working. It’s not toxic feeling anymore. At least from what I experience these days. Even with the staff helping me out in little ways you can just tell the energy is different these days. Only complaint is the lead wall. Clip after clip after clip. You reach one quick draw and are already having to clip it at another one 1 foot over the last one? Where when I go to back on the wall there’s like 4 maybe 5 quick draws. Doesn’t bother me too much but was told the other day that I couldn’t skip clips. Didn’t realize I did since the clip was just a bit further then I felt comfortable clipping plus had plenty quick draws already below me that I was comfortable continuing to climb. I know the guy β€œwarning” me is newer and I haven’t seen him lead climb at all so I won’t knock him for being ignorant to the distance between each clip being too close but that’s about my only complaint these days. Even when the gym is packed it’s still bearable. Koodoos for fixing the gym!

Climbing is a challenging sport that offers an incredible workout, and this gym is the ideal place to get started.

Whether you’re a seasoned climber or a complete beginner, you’ll find a supportive community here. The staff and fellow climbers are always eager to lend a hand or offer advice.

It’s also worth noting that this gym is incredibly beginner-friendly. They have routes suitable for all skill levels, making it easy to progress and improve your climbing skills.

If you have kids, this gym offers a fantastic opportunity to introduce them to a healthy, active lifestyle. It’s a bonding experience that’s both enjoyable and educational.

In summary, if you’re looking for a great workout and a welcoming community to explore the exciting world of climbing, this gym is the perfect place to start. Highly recommended!

Made the mistake of going to this place for my birthday awhile back. At the time, there was a very small-statured Asian man working there named John. He was incredibly rude and condescending to my brother and I, even though we were kind and friendly to the guy. I was shocked.
The staff seems like it’s made up of a bunch of climbers with broken dreams of becoming pros, but instead, they had to settle for a minimum wage job at some crummy old climbing gym. Sadly, it felt like John was projecting that frustration onto us during our visit. Ever since that awful experience, I’ve been spreading the word to friends: go to a different climbing gym. Don’t subject yourself to the attitudes of this unprofessional staff.

This place charges me up every time I walk through the door. It’s bright, spacious, full of friendly faces. The staff have answered every question I have with expertise. The clientele has the best vibe of any gym I’ve climbed at. Folks are friendly, and passionately engaged in the sport without distractions or self consciousness. The weight area, cardio machines, and daily classes are worth the membership fees on their own.

I spend on average 4-6 hours myself. Cardio->climbing->lifting->cardio->repeat until I drop!

In fact, my wife’s signed up with no intention of climbing. She needs a safe space to lift, and grow her fitness at the daily instructor led workouts and yoga. She’s all in after getting a day pass and doing a working out while I climb.

They offer so much for so little, I can’t fit it in one review. If you’re in the area just pop your head in, say hi to the folks at the desk, see what classes are on the calendar for the month.

I visited this gym while passing thru town and I loved it. The people at the front desk were super friendly and the all around vibe there was welcoming. I was on a time crunch and I only bouldered since I didn't bring a harness or a partner, but I could have stayed in just the bouldering section all day long. There was such a wide variety of styles in the bouldering area and really fun problems. I can't wait to come back and try out the routes! Thank you guys for a wonderful day!

I’m not a climber really, but I go to bouldering gyms for fun. I only do v0s, some v1s and I must say their v0 setting here (and I don’t know if that’s even the right technical term) is harder than those in the other couple of gyms I’ve been to. Their bouldering area is smaller though (I go to Dogpatch in SF), so probably why only a few v0s to try. If I remember correctly, I saw some crimp/pinch types of rock on v0s. I don’t have a strong grip, and neither do I do pull ups so those are def challenging. Hope when they reset, they’ll have more easy routesβ€” it will be more encouraging (and fun) for beginners like me.

Other than that, no complains about the staff. Have been here twice and they’ve been helpful both times. Not too crowded compared to top rope area

I travel extensively around the country visiting different gyms. This gym had excellent route setting. A good selection of caves and arches and fun features. Not a lot of hang out and watch space, it felt pretty cramped as it go busier. There are no auto-belays so be ready for that if you're looking to solo TR. The reason for my rating of 2 stars all comes down mainly to price. This is the most expensive day pass I have seen. $30 is simply too high and they don't offer a bouldering only pass, which is very frustrating.

Want to give them a zero but that's not possible so ill give them a one. I've came here a couple of times, I was told the staff was not friendly but i'll have a good time. It was definitely worse than unfriendly. The staff could not be bothered to do their job. Whenever they grace you with the opportunity to attend you they will do so with the littlest amount of respect. They will cut you off and chit chat in front of you, give you their back, sigh/roll their eyes, you name it.

Other than the 3+ minutes u have to spend dealing with the staff for signing in or renting shoes the rest of the experience is better. It is unfortunately the only climbing gym in fresno so I will be back.

Very friendly (and sometimes quirky!) staff. Good pricing for membership and fun route setting. I'm a proponent of stiffer gym grading, but either way the quality of the routes are excellent. The weightlifting area is nice, and I'm looking forward to trying some yoga classes while I recover from an injury.

The new bouldering area is also on point. I come to rope up, but end up "warming up" on the boulders for so long it's hard to climb after

This is my home gym, and I have been a member for just about five years now. I LOVE THIS PLACE.

I climb regularly, am a part of their running club, have attended several of their yoga classes, and attended many of their extra events like monthly nutrition clinics, holiday parties, and climbing competitions.

Whether you want to boulder, top rope, lead climb, take a fitness class, or just use their workout equipment, this gym has it all. There's no reason to have any other gym membership, even though at first blush you may think the membership cost is a little high. Trust me, it's worth it.

The staff is always very friendly and know you by name. They maintain a safe environment for everyone, and even choose to host adaptive sports programs once a month in Spring and Fall. All the other members at the gym are friendly - it's a climbing thing - so the environment is super chill. I love bringing friends here for the first time because everyone ends up falling in love with this gym just as I have.

So I went here for a class field trip thing I had to do and I'm so happy that I went. I had a blast, I am a complete newbie to climbing so I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get to the top of anything, but I ended up climbing 4 different routes completely. They taught us all the important safety stuff so nobody ends up dead, and here I am, not dead, writing a review three days later. I've been a member going three days a week for 18 months now, and MetalMark has essentially become a second home to me. The gym is spacious and well kept, the staff are excellent, and there's so many cool perks make the pricey initiation and monthly membership fees worth every dollar.

Now before you consider joining, it's handy to know that you're in for quite a few startup fees. First off, there's a $100 initiation fee for new members, but if you come with the person that referred you, or if you're a student, that fee is cut in half, so it's not way too bad. Then there's the first month payment for your membership, which is $55/mo. normally, and $45/mo. if you're a student. Those are the basic startup costs, and then for gear, it's up to you to see if you'd rather buy or rent. Renting is only about five dollars per visit if you rent both shoes and a harness, though I'd recommend buying, since it'll save you a lot if you're consistent with your climbing. Now the main drawback to buying your gear at the gym is the fact that they don't have a return policy, which is kind've lame, so I'd recommend going to REI in RiverPark (quite a few of the staff at REI happen to be rock climbers who are also members of MetalMark, so there's a major plus). Buying your gear will cost anywhere between $60-$150 for shoes (depending on what kind've shoes you get), around $80 for the harness, and $15-$20 for a chalk bag, plus $2 for a block of chalk (you can just buy your chalk at the gym).

It's up to you to decide if all of that is worth the hefty startup investment. To me, it seriously was. I just bought all of my gear right when I started up and it was worth every penny. The members here are the most friendly people you'll find in the city of Fresno who are so encouraging and will help you to achieve your fitness goals and improve your climbing technique, the staff are very knowledgeable, they have all kinds of classes that are free for members such as yoga classes, fitness classes, climbing classes, 6am climbing boot camp (if 6am and boot camp are your jam), the climbing workout and climbing equipment are well maintained, and I just need to mention one more time, the members of this gym are seriously the best people you will find in the entire city of Fresno. I am not kidding. You will meet all of your new best friends if you come here regularly.
I have no idea how to describe it, but this gym has an uncanny ability to create such a friendly and encouraging atmosphere between all kinds of people. Everybody is so laid back, and cool to talk to. You can just walk up to anybody to ask about anything and forge an instant friendship within just a few minutes. You won't find this level of friendliness anywhere else in Fresno.

Anyways, I hope this review was helpful. I've been here for a fairly long time and it has been worth every dollar I've spent here.

Metalmark has such an inviting and friendly environment; it always feels so positive here. The routes are always fun and challenging. It also very clean and the staff is always helpful. Overall it's the best fitness experience I've ever had and I look forward to coming here 3-5 times a week.
