1 year later, they’re still doing the same thing whenever they can their collective delusion is out of my mind but they still try to reinforce the belief in me and my friends. The damage Touchstone climbing and their “yogis” caused me continues to hurt me to this day. Shame on all of you, If you’re lucky enough to be unburdened by a constant preoccupation with energy or the flow, don’t go to Touchstone. One of their yogis will likely plant that seed in your mind, and it’s a poisonous mentality that takes months or years to deprogram, and coincidentally, is often used as a tool for manipulation in cults. It’s been over 2 years since this cancer entered into my consciousness and I still get anxiety about it daily. Shame. I’m suspicious that this may be the same thing preoccupying the minds of a lot of people I’ve met that struggle with homelessness, addiction and/or mental health issues. Shame!

Now for the good stuff:
I love touchstone gyms, they have the most floor space, the best routes, the cleanest holds and really nice facilities. I’ve been to all the climbing gyms in SF and Touchstone is my favorite. $107 is very reasonable for access to 5 local gyms, they have tens of thousands of square feet of climbing space, every piece of equipment you need, an incredible variation of climbing routes in countless styles, classes, trainers, coaches, snacks and fingernail clippers, they have it all.

The problem with touchstone gyms is the culture. Climbing is a sport with a very high barrier of entry monetarily, so, most of the people in this and touchstone gyms don’t have to worry about money and don’t understand the damage they do to people that do have to worry about it.

Whether it’s asking to use equipment you just started using then getting mad at you for asking for some more time to finish your sets, or someone telling you they need to use the pull-up bar you’re using because they only have 10 minutes to do 3 sets and then freaking out on you for suggesting they use a different one. Or maybe you just want a snack bar and the person behind the counter decides to treat you with absolute contempt for existing and needing calories. Shame.

Make no mistake, if you don’t look, act, or flow a certain way at Touchstone gyms, there are people that will make your life difficult. This is after 2 years of observation.

I love touchstone and their gyms, but this is unacceptable. I’ve been working out here and at touchstone gyms for 2 years, I even worked at a touchstone gym, but the entire time I’ve been observing, I see the same behavior time and time again from the same archetype of people, wealthy entitled people that think you owe them whatever they ask for.

Lastly, I’d like to mention this:
I absolutely love climbing, Mission Cliffs and Touchstone. I kicked a 14 year nicotine addiction just so I could train harder for climbing and I love getting to climb and train at the network of fantastic gyms touchstone has.
And this:
I have a disability, I don’t tell anyone, but in the past, I genuinely almost died because of it twice. Touchstone gym has made the symptoms of my disability immeasurably worse. Shame. Shame on everyone responsible. Shame.

Just went here for the first time in maybe 6 months. Theyre still terrible. Absolutely terrible. And they’re still pulling the same BS. Same people, doing the same stuff, hurting the same people.

Decent climbing gym, not the cleanest or biggest but clean enough and the route setting was pretty good. I only climbed ropes this time but from what I could see the bouldering seemed limited. I think there are better bouldering gyms nearish, but for rope climbing it’s a good gym.

OOf this is tough to write as I'm a big fan of many other Touchstone gyms (and used to attend MC regulary ~10 years ago). Popped by for a yoga class and climb a couple days ago and compared to the East Bay TS gyms, this place is ROUGH. Bathrooms smell like ciggarettes, no feminine products (offered at BIW and PP) and all the studio/class items like mats, blocks, etc are locked up. The studio was an ice box due to two large AC units (with clear lock boxes over the controls) until in the middle of class the units, untouched, switched to blowing hot air. Front desk staff also didn't know there were mats (albeit locked up) at the studio and said I could rent one... rookie move or cheap, I can't tell but ick. The whole gym is dimly lit, the water bottle fill station showed as the filter needed changing and dispensers were out of soap. Tip for Touchstone: invest a little more money into exsiting gyms and take a breather on opening new gyms.

Great route setting, but incredibly disappointing front desk staff. The person working the desk didn’t seem to know how to rock climb, let alone administer a lead/sport climbing test. From what I could gather, he wasn’t even trained to give a proper lead test—likely because he can’t lead climb himself.

For context: I’ve been climbing for 16 years and have worked as a professional route setter.

A note to Touchstone: If safety is truly a priority, hire staff who actually climb, care, and are qualified to assess others. This was embarrassing. You might want to slow down the aggressive expansion and ensure at least two competent staff are working the gym floor.

The staff member on duty when I visited (April 5th, 3 PM) clearly had no idea what he was doing.

Super disappointing. I won’t be returning to this gym anytime soon. If you’re in the area go check out Movement or boulder at Dogpatch, but avoid this gym for sure.

I’ve come here for a few years and mostly really enjoy it, but it’s just too crowded unless you get in at or before 7am or during work hours. People leave their crap all over the floor/walkways and locker room benches, don’t re-rack or return weights, and it’s really stressful to work out in such an environment, let alone climb. I’m switching gyms unfortunately to avoid the hectic crowded vibe.

Their rental because devices are ATCs. There are some gyms that don't even allow those as personal protection. (Note that the carabineer gate also doesn't close.)

Been going here for years. Honestly, I only go anymore because it's very close to where I live. The gym is pretty worn and crappy. It's also SUPER crowded after work on weekdays, to the point it's impossible to climb with any efficiency. Workout machines are old and crappy and frequently broken and they have a very limited selection. Sauna is nice, but very small. The classes are kind of a joke, there are literally zero hiit classes that are not during 9-5 working hours, so if you have a normal work schedule you will never be able to attend. I did go to one once and it was also very strange, just an instructor writing the exercises on a board and then you do them at your own pace. Zero energy, zero good music to pump you up, literally just like working out on your own? Get better instructors and get more classes at times people who have jobs can attend. Getting harder and harder to justify the ever increasing cost of membership. Movement is much nicer and has better classes, more interesting routes, cleaner, and less crowded.

The gym was clean and has great facilities. I thought the grades were a little funky and all over the place. The bouldering grades were quite hard and the lead/top-rope grades were very soft. Either way, I had a good climbing experience. I was appreciative of the staff’s safety standards but I felt ripped off on my lead test. We arrived around ~10am and had to wait till 4:30 to take our test, we were failed over minor backstepping and specific rules of the test that weren’t communicated. Our examiner was very condescending, cold, rude, and borderline confrontational from the start. For example, when my friend took the top-rope exam, he was asked how long the tail needed to be. He responded “about a fist and a finger or so”. The examiner glared and snarled “it has to be at least 6 inches!”. It was all ironic because most of the permanent top-rope ropes didn’t have stopper knots. I really wanted to like the gym, and my buddy and I had a great time on the wall but the treatment of a certain staff member really stained my experience.

Went here just twice while in town and had a great experience. For a relatively small space, they have an incredible amount of routes, equipment, weights, machines, hangboard area, cycle room, yoga studio, and on and on.

Staff was all super friendly and helpful. I love that you can borrow an ATC for free while you’re there. The belay test was quick - though I had to take it each day I came in, even though only 2 days apart.

The top rope routes were tightly packed on the walls but didn’t have a ton of traversing, so it felt like almost every space could be used simultaneously.

I was very impressed by the number of routes, the variation in wall shape/overhang, and use of space.

Only spent a short time in the bouldering area as it was quite small and packed. Good for a warmup or if you come in off hours, but a little difficult not to be on top of other guests during peak hours.

Bathrooms were clean and inclusive. Many cubbies and lockers for storing your belongings. People were generally very friendly and stayed out of each other’s way.

I’d definitely return if in the area again!

I love it here! The staff is super friendly and the facilities are great. People are respectful and it’s nice as a home gym. They reset the routes often enough to not get bored but not too often so you have time to continue working on routes. The classes are better than I would have thought and very frequent, you have to book within 24hrs but they are the same times each week so easy ti get a routine going, I enjoy the yoga classes. Also, The sauna is an added bonus after a hard climb.

My recent visit was one of the worsts experiences I’ve had with any business staff. Maria was very condescending. Plenty of other better gyms nearby.

I came in for a day pass to lead climb. From the beginning the front desk employee, Maria, was dismissal towards me for wanting to take the lead test. My climbing partner was already certified. She asked us to wait an unspecified amount of time for the test. We warmed up for over 20-25 minutes and ended up doing non lead climbs while we waited. All our gear was ready near the lead test station the whole time.

Almost an hour later of doing non lead climbs, I checked in again and Maria treated us like we were being an inconvenience to her for wanting to lead climb.

Before I started the test Maria was belittling and condescending as if she didn’t want me to pass. Being critical of everything I could potentially do wrong. Ultimately it came true. Failed my first lead test. I’m not the strongest climber but I’m a safe climber and have passed at every other gym. I didn’t make any mistakes, just slipped off on the 2nd to last hold. I guess that’s what happens when you do an overhung lead test after an hour of “warming up”. I have hundreds of hours climbing indoors and outdoors.

I’m all for safe climbing but damn this is just gatekeeping. Never coming back to this gym again. Don’t need this kind of toxic and non inclusive behavior in the climbing community.

I rarely write negative reviews — especially for a climbing gym — but my experience at Mission Cliffs in SF was so disappointing in so many ways.

Maria (staff member) was extremely condescending. We were visiting from out of town and my partner needed to take his lead certification because he hadn’t visited a touchstone before. Between us, we have hundreds of hours of lead climbing experiences, both indoors and outside.

We were made to wait over an hour — despite repeatedly coming back to the front desk to ask when we could take it and if anyone was available (they were, but were just chit chatting at the desk). After the hour, we finally went to the desk to ask again and she said “oh, hasn’t someone already tested you yet?” to which she finally agreed to come administer the test.

I have previously passed a lead test at touchstone, but was told that by participating in the test again that if I did anything wrong my lead cert would be revoked. Get the need to be safe here, but this felt super unnecessary.

She then pointed out that I didn’t have a lead card (we had told her when checking in that we were visiting from out of town and didn’t have this). She then said in an accusatory tone that she could take away my lead cert for not having the card (all before the test, all still extremely unnecessary).

She then proceeded to administer the test — which is one of the unnecessarily hardest lead routes for a test imo having visited many gyms in many countries. There is no need for a lead climber to be able to climb an overhung 10b successfully and clean in one go — the emphasis should clearly be on safety rather than ability (other gyms I have visited have plenty of great 10.b and below lead routes). There is also no need to intimidate the climber taking the test prior to them taking the test. Her instructions were convoluted (“clip 6 clips, you can discuss which ones between you” — unclear why she couldn’t just say clip all the draws on the route) and she was just downright mean.

The cumulative effect of this is a gym that feels extremely oppressive and unfriendly to climbers — both old and new. I cannot even imagine how a newer lead climber would feel taking this test — intimidated, scared, and frankly not wanting to bother to clear these hurdles.

Sadly, to top it off, the route setting was not even good. Straight up and down and nothing very interesting.

The problem setting is good and interesting, but the rest of the experience is bad..

They have a lot of top rope, but I could only find a single 5.8 in the whole area.. The bouldering is strangely tiny for the size of the gym and very crowded. There's a ton of friction on some of the top ropes, to the point where it's concerning.

Parking at peak times is an exercise in madness but I guess that's normal for the area.

There was only one staff member trying to man the counter and do belay certifications at the same time, so I had to wait several minutes. They were also visibly teaching some people how to belay during the test.

Big gym with good physical infrastructure but problems with customer service and client vibe. Place feels understaffed in terms of climbing course offerings and capacity to do lead courses or testing. Route grading is soft giving new climbers a grossly overestimated ego boost (think 11b with many jugs). Climbers at this gym are notorious for leaving phones in their pockets and being shocked when it drops out during a top rope route. The gym has zero insulation so expect it to be cold af in the evenings and a sauna during sunny afternoons.

Had an hour to kill before a flight so we stopped by here. Staff very generously gave us a significant discount on a day pass as we only had a short time we could climb (and I think they felt bad we were headed back to a cold climate...)

Bouldering area isn't huge, but has a nice variety, with a wide range of skills used within each grade.

Would definitely like to come back next time I'm in town and spend some more time.

Decent facility for TR and lead, but the bouldering and weights section is small. IMO the route-setting here is lazy compared to other gyms I’ve visited. Walls are reset very infrequently, and the new routes that are set are often just slight variations on the routes that were there before. Feels like there is a lack of creativity and variety.

In addition, the TR grades are pretty heavily “feather”-bagged: there are virtually zero routes graded below 5.10, and routes are generally a grade higher than they should be.

Finally, this is a very corporate-feeling gym. Initiation fees, freeze fees, friction to cancel, no free tape, etc.

This spot is smaller than you expect and also can get super crowded. Parking is also very difficult.

Great experience here, the top rope is awesome and so is the bouldering wall, would recommend this to anyone looking to start climbing.

Overpriced, poor route setting, disorganized, have a number of dark patterns to charge you fees for pausing your membership, reactivation fees, etc. Can't recommend it.

Closest touchstone gym to my home. Some of the staff members here give me a judging look as if I am being a bother, recently one of my other Indian friends complained as well about how they have been treating him in an unwelcoming manner. Which makes me question if the staff here have a thing against Indian race people, or are they rude to everyone(I hope this is the case). Nevertheless two stars.

A great climbing gym!

Like all gyms, it's a great community, but the number of top-rope and lead climbing routes here is awesome. To be fair, I'm a novice at harnessed climbing; I'm primarily a boulderer, which leads me to my only gripe about this gym- the bouldering area is quite small.

Still, I'm glad they have bouldering at all. My home gym, Dogpatch Boulders (another one of Touchstone's), has the opposite problem- no top-rope.

The location is pretty central in SF, not too far from anywhere other than Outer Sunset/Richmond.

Mixed feelings about this gym. I felt like their practices with belay testing were unsafe after witnessing a staff member give a single day belay certification to a child who didn’t properly know how to belay, and who was being taught to belay while being tested. The climbing was fun, and I felt safe personally since my partner and I have been climbing for years. Their work out area was nice as well. Just felt uncomfortable with their policies regarding belay certs.

This is a really fun place to do top-rope, bouldering, or just work out. It’s all indoors with plenty of challenging courses.

The gym has great class options and top roping, but coming here during peak hours is the most claustrophobic gym experience I've ever had. The tiny bouldering section is not fun. Neither is free weights area. Total zoo.
