Very unorganized for their after school program. Genevieve gave me misinformation about sign up which lead to months of back and forth stress. I went in twice and spent months emailing trying to have a simple sign up and auto withdrawal set up. They are super unorganized which makes me question whose hands I’m putting my son in.

You can’t count on the indoor pool being 90 degrees as advertised. That temperature is needed for their arthritis excersizes classes. If it’s lower arthritis cramps up. Not fun.

If you're there for the pool, cardio, or classes this place is AMAZING. Lots of equipment and its nice. If you are there to lift, NOT GREAT. Small weight room, I've never been there without having to wait for someone. Go to the City Heights Y and their weight room is literally 5x bigger.

Pretty solid gym so far. Been going for a month. Lots of cardio and weight equipment, and the newer EGYM circuit training machines. The employees are courteous and polite. The hours are also solid. Opens at 5am on weekdays.

I had a great experience at the YMCA in Mission Valley thanks to Justin at the front desk. He was very friendly, patient and helpful in setting me up with the YMCA app., which now makes checking in so much easier for me. Thank you, Justin, for making things simple and stress free!

Staff is always nice and professional. I do think it's a bit pricy given the state of some of the equipment, bathrooms, and water fountains though. I wish they'd put a bit more into maintenance since they keep raising the price.

Update: Still frequently increasing prices. A single membership is now $75!!!

One of the employees named Kasey was extremely rude when I asked if I could use my student ID to sign the waiver for a guest pass. It was unprovoked and I really have no idea why he was so upset. I guess you need a driver’s license or something like that to go in, but I had never been to the Y before and he made me feel like an idiot for even trying my student ID.

This facility is incredible and I’m glad to call it my home gym. I use the weight lifting room, cardio equipment, and indoor/outdoor pool regularly.

The strength training equipment is abundant and evenly spaced with plenty of squat racks, machines, and floor space to accommodate varying crowds.

The cardio room was just recently updated and all the equipment is so nice to use! I’ve been loving the new treadmills.

The indoor pool is often being used for programs. The outdoor pool is the perfect temperature with a great view of the surrounding palms and lounge chairs for a comfortable and luxurious swim experience. I really love and appreciate the Masters Swim program here too.

Overall, this is an amazing resource for anyone of any fitness level or interest and my favorite Y location in SD!

I’ve always enjoyed all YMCA locations, but I had to take a moment to thank Jordan Van Norman (I hope I’m spelling his last name correctly!). He went above and beyond to ensure I was completely satisfied with a purchase I made for private swimming lessons. His professionalism and genuine care made the process seamless. I’m truly grateful for his helpβ€”thank you, Jordan, for such a great experience!

I was surprised that they won’t let me stretch in the mat in stretching area without shoes because they believe shoes that are worn out on streets are more hygienic (WT…!!!). And manager was not able to explain how is that possible. I have never heard anywhere else that shoes are mandatory for stretching. Everywhere else one is asked to remove shoes to get a better/deeper stretch.
They really need to do something about this illogical rule

The YMCA has long been a bastion for community sports, notably basketball, which was invented at a YMCA in 1891. This rich history makes the recent decision to curtail basketball court availability in favor of pickleball during peak early morning hours somewhat perplexing and disheartening.

The decision has stirred considerable debate among the YMCA members. On one hand, it's understandable that the facility wants to accommodate the growing popularity of pickleball, especially among retirees who are a large and active part of the YMCA community. On the other hand, this shift seems to disproportionately affect the younger, working demographic that values early morning basketball sessions as a vital part of their fitness routine and work-life balance.

While the sentiment of inclusivity for pickleball players is appreciated, the implementation feels somewhat skewed. Many working members feel that their needs have been overlooked, and the essence of what the YMCA stood for in the context of basketball is being eroded. The YMCA might have sought a more balanced approach, possibly by allocating different times or additional resources to accommodate all interests.

Furthermore, communication about these changes appears to have been minimal, leaving some members feeling blindsided. A more transparent approach, involving community feedback before implementing such changes, could have mitigated the dissatisfaction.

Overall, this decision by the YMCA reflects a challenging balancing act between tradition and evolving community needs. However, the execution and communication of the change could have been handled better to uphold the YMCA's commitment to serving all segments of its community equitably.

I'm not from here, nobody told me that the hot tub and pool were closed at 8 when I registered. Today, after the gym, I wanted to enter two minutes before 8 because it closes at 9 and so I couldn't enter... That's not very true. A sad method of communication. πŸ‘ŽπŸ»

Visited while on vacation. Generous trial policy. Two great pools, one indoor and one out. Treadmills as far as the eye can see. Nice staff who checked in when I looked lost looking for a specific weight machine. Lockers don't require money or your own lock which is really nice. Even has a cafe.

Also they have a super cool spin room from stages cycling. The machines are awesome and can be used outside of classes, though the classes looked cool too.

I believe there is a huge issue with racism here from staff and other members. Some deeply unpleasant people and widespread petty/low class behavior imo. I believe this is a much wider issue with the Y writ large, sometimes subtle and sometimes MUCH less subtle. Y head office leadership and CEO bury your head in the sand at your own peril as a viable organization imo. The diversity of residents including powerful investors and their families is increasing fast in San Diego :)

It appears to me that black, brown, Asian etc. people are treated like second class citizens, only tolerated if they do not speak up or do not outperform white peers in activities.

I think retaliation, closed ranks and marginalization are the toxic tactics used against you if you speak up. I was so relieved when I canceled my membership. I felt relieved also as I now have confidence that my children will not be exposed to this too. Best thing I thought was to join a place where these kind of people are hard priced out. My family and I feel safe, free and happy now.

My husband's been a member for a year. He joined mainly for pickleball. However, his experience has been terrible with few pickle ball players there. He complained to management on several occasions about disrespectful and harmful behaviors of some players. The management assured him that they were spoken to. Later, on 1st February Ashley and Barbara called him and said your behavior is concerning as we got complains about you. So you have to come and sign a code of conduct. My husband said I told you about their bad behaviors have you done anything about that and why you are attacking me instead. They both said tersely we have nothing against them you have done bad to them. Now Ireally want higher managers to look into it and make sure the people like Barbara and Ashley working there must be trained well enough to listen to grievance of people more especially who are minority there.

I was a YMCA member for about 6 months and unfortunately wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The gym facilities are nice, but their cancellation policy is absurd and their customer service is terrible. You have to cancel at least 5 days before your billing date, but you have to do it IN-PERSON which is extremely inconvenient. I requested to cancel my membership on 11/28 (in-person and in writing via email) and was billed on 12/2. After requesting a refund for the December charge, since I had expressed multiple times that I wouldn't be using the gym in December, the Member Services Rep I was working with just stopped responding. I ended up having to dispute the charge with my credit card company. I would have considered returning to the Y in the future, but I'll never do business with them again after this experience. I can't imagine that my $65 was worth a credit card dispute and a lost customer for life - but maybe they have different priorities.

This gym has a very negative culture. I've seen people fall off treadmills, or trip over equipment, and no one dies anything. No one tries to help, or shows any concern. The staff in the afternoon (with two or three exceptions) are mostly teenagers or young adults with nothing but apathy. They care little for invasions of property, or privacy. People take pictures and phone calls in locker room, staff doesn't care. Seriously felt uncomfortable at this gym.

Show up to swim class one day with the instructor asking my child to wait for the next class instead. It wasn’t asking really because we didn’t have a choice. Okay that’s nice of you to change my child swim time without prior notice. Since we waited so long for the next class, we decided to free swim a little to kill time. As soon as the kids stepped in the pool the lifeguard started screaming at them to get out. My child’s got so embarrassed they never wanted to go back again so we skipped our remaining lessons. Couldn’t you just let the child know not to be in the water nicely? It wasn’t like they were resisting arrest!

Good amount of gym equipment, indoor basketball courts, and awesome pools. However, rates are a bit expensive at $60+ for individual. Also difficult to reach staff at front desk by phone. I canceled my membership bu email as listed on their website, but no one replied to me. Had to go in to cancel, and would've been billed again it hadn't done that.

Overall good facility and equipment for everyone, but a bit too expensive and not so great service.

I was a visitor to Dan Diego and was here to use the pool for a couple days. Was greeted and taken care of by John at front desk; he was so patient and friendly at 5 AM! The facility was very clean and organized. Great outdoor pool and the indoor was very warm (too warm for distance laps so outdoor is better). Also you get two visits for free! How awesome is that! This place is disorganized.

I wanted to sign-up for their "no sign-up fee" special but the computer system wouldn't let me finish the process. So, I gave them a call in the afternoon and got their voice mailbox. That's kinda lame. After hanging up and calling again the phone system offered to call me back when my place in line was up. Only problem was that I never got that callback.

Later in the day I called again and got the voice mailbox again, so this time I left a message, asking for help. Never got a callback from that either.

The next day I decided to email them explaining my problem. Again, haven't heard back from them. I can only imagine how much they must struggle with the rest of their responsibilities.

The weight room and the cardio room are full of people sitting on the machines and using their phones. Many of them even take the free weights and stand there and you cannot even use the one free weight they have. Sometimes for hours. They basically do a set and then spend another ten or fifteen minutes sitting there on their phone. Or they do a few minutes of cardio and then get comfortable sitting of the machine and using their phone. I spoke with some of the people who work there and they denied any responsibility for that. I would add that the weight room has far too few free weights besides the fact that the person using the weight is just standing there on their phone. If you go there to weight lift you should just forget about it. Work out at home or find a real weight gym. The staff in this place will never do anything about this situation.

Not many people due to covid. They have done a great job with spacing and providing sanitizing equipment. The equipment is mostly maintained. However, I have stopped going.

None of the employees in the equipment area do anything. 2/3 of the people who use the equipment can't be bothered to wipe it down. When some Y employee actually does show up, they do not enforce any of their rules. A trainer is shouting into their phone next to the no cell signs.

One guy shows up with 2 towels all the time, on two pieces of equipment to "reserve" the equipment while he "works in" on a third piece. Has dirty towels all over the equipment - never wipes anything down. The Y employee goes to remove the towels, but because he is a regular, says. Oh, I didn't realize it was you J**." This same guy screams like a wounded Hippo, echoing through out the entire area every time he does a repetition. Place is fine, people at front desk great, employees working the floor - terrible. Terrible experience. Find another place.

Extraordinarily disorganized. They keep either no records or terrible records. Sign your kids up for a class, good luck; even if you were first to sign up they may boot your kids in favor of someone who signed up 3 weeks later because they didn't keep track of the number of spots in the class. It is OPEN DAILY ON WEEKDAYS FROM 4:30 AM UNTIL 10:30 PM..
Weekends close about 8 pm.
Very large olympic sized swimming pools, obe indoor, obe outdoor, with outdoor 10 person jacuzzi.
Small open cafe for coffee and inexpensive food/snacks with tv and charging ports for phone/ tablet xharging.

The pools are great. Indoor pool is heated just right. Outdoor pool is very spacious. They have 2 small spas with a life guard on duty. Clean facility. Really enjoyed coming here often. Great for families.

Great overall facility and fantastic if you're a silver sneaker. The weight room is terribly small and uncomfortably jammed packed outside of 5am. Great if you swim as well but they treat the weight room like the red-headed step child they wish wasn't a part of the facility.

Great gym ir should I say fitness centre
There are approximately more than 15 swimming lines one indoor pool and another outdoor pool, an indoor basket field, two big group classes, a cardio room, stretching room, weight room, a spinning room.
You yes you can entertain yourself in here and they have really affordable prices too.
I tried the free 2 days per year the they offer and I fell in love with it.
There are two parking lots too

This location is a little small but very clean, and the staff is super nice! The reason I'm giving this Y 3 stars is because of the people that workout here. I've seen prejudice against transgender people occuring here on multiple occasions. I'm not trans myself, but on three different days now I have witnessed privileged middle-aged white women saying demeaning things about transgender people working out in their same vicinity. These people are doing nothing to them and they go out of their way to make them feel uncomfortable. I've also had older people at this Y be extremely rude to me and touch my belongings while I was working out. Honestly, I've been to many other YMCAs around San Diego, and the members here make it feel like a very conservative place. I would suggest working out at a different location if you want a more inclusive feeling environment. I wish there was more the staff could do to provide inclusivity and a comfortable space for all, but I understand they are limited.

State of the Art for The Y.
My only major concern is the extreme frequency of times the Jacuzzis were shut down including no staff lifeguards available to monitor them and the actual monitor not working properly..

It is a good place to workout, the only problem deciding what to do, swim, lifting weights, so many options.

While this facility offers most of the amenities of YMCAs around the country, it doesn't have a stream room or sauna.

massively cramped and unable to provide for the demand if strength training is important to you. At peak times even the cardio can be a wait. Excellent swimming facilities!

Nice spot. Just wish the weight room was a little bit bigger. Other than that the facility is kept up nicely.

Great YMCA location! Friendly staff and they recently updated all the workout equipment in the wellness center. Mondays can be busy at times but the rest of the week is great! Inviting place to go workout. The pool is also heated. Check their website for any updates on the facility issues.
