I was trying to find a small gym that wasn’t crowded to get in shape for summer. I’m not much of a gym person so I also signed up for training sessions with Matty. I’ve been very satisfied with the gym and other members. There’s always plenty of room and nothing but good things to say about other members; everyone is friendly and helpful. I’ve lost 20 lbs in 2 months and this was just what I needed to get back on the horse. So glad I signed up.

I'm so glad I found More Than Fitness and started weight training with Matty. I used to have a fitness club membership. I would get motivated for a few weeks, but then I would stop going, so of course, I never saw any real improvement. With Matty, I lift weights twice a week and I am getting so strong! It's amazing how getting stronger makes life easier! I first found Matty last November. He offers a free fitness assessment at his gym in Redwood City on El Camino (across the street from Burger King). After the assessment, you can decide if you want to work with him. If you need a trainer who will keep you safe while you become stronger, then I highly recommend Matty.

I’ve always been a bit skeptical when it comes to fitness trainers. I tend to think a lot of people just repeat things they’ve heard, but Matty is different. From the moment I started working with him, I could tell he’s done his research and is truly knowledgeable about the science behind exercise. I’ve asked him everything from anatomy questions to details on muscle function and joint mechanics, and he always has thoughtful, informed answers. I’ve never felt like I was just getting generic advice – his insights are backed by real knowledge.

One of the things that impressed me the most was how Matty helped me overcome long-standing issues I had with back pain. For years, I couldn’t squat properly without discomfort, and doing Romanian Deadlifts (RDLs) was pretty much out of the question. Thanks to his expertise and careful coaching, my back pain has completely disappeared, and I’ve been able to push myself to a one-rep max of 165 lbs in deadlifts—something I honestly thought was impossible for me.

Matty is incredibly organized and punctual, which I really appreciate. He’s always on time for our sessions and tracks my progress carefully. After our first meeting, where he took the time to understand my goals and my history with strength training, he created a personalized, comprehensive plan for me. It’s clear that he puts a lot of thought and effort into customizing everything, making sure I’m always working towards the right goals.

Beyond strength training, Matty has also helped me with weight loss, designing a plan that fits my lifestyle and actually works. My mobility has improved dramatically, especially in areas like ankle and hip mobility, which were huge problem areas for me. I also had a lot of upper back pain, but Matty’s knowledge—enhanced by his certification as a massage therapist—has been key in addressing that as well.

What really sets Matty apart is his passion for physical fitness. His deep knowledge is only one part of the equation. He’s also super personable, which makes every session fun. He knows everyone at the gym by name, and the positive energy he brings makes the gym feel like a community. It’s not just about working out—it’s about supporting each other and celebrating progress together.

I feel incredibly lucky to have found Matty. Unlike the big, impersonal gyms or fitness classes, working with him feels like getting personalized care from someone who genuinely cares about my success. If you're looking for a trainer who’s not just about lifting weights but also about lifting you up, Matty is the person to see.

With a personal trainer the truly important thing, I think, is that you want to keep coming back, week after week, year after year. And with Matty you will keep coming back. Everyone comes back. People come back because they get stronger working with him, sure, but really they keep coming back because he is kind, selfless and compassionate. One funny Matty story: he used to work with very old people and a woman had a cat that she could no longer care for. No one, of course, wanted this old woman's old cat and so who takes it in? Matty of course. And then he looks after this old cat for years and feels lucky to have the old cat! Another funny Matty story, I left my phone at the gym the other night and knowing I have young kids and couldn’t easily come back he drove to my building and waited with my phone until I got home! Who does that? Matty. He's an excellent personal trainer and an even better friend. You will be lucky if you can work with him, he'll make every day you see him a little better.

I have trained with Matty for years and am very happy I found him. He’s a wonderful individual and a fantastic trainer.

He is very conscientious and diligent in ensuring my technique and posture are always correct. He changes up the routines to ensure I’m never bored. He pushes me just enough to achieve my goals and I’m very happy with the results. I am an older lady and am proud to say that with Matty's training I was successful in lifting a 175lbs hex-bar deadlift.

Matty is an excellent trainer. I came in with a goal to bulk up by 20 lb (I had never lifted a dumbbell before) and within a couple of months, reached the goal with ease. He helped out with diet suggestions according to my goals, has varied exercise sets, explaining the benefits of each one, has flexible schedules, has a very structured approach and super fun to train with.

I highly recommend Matty to everyone but especially if you’re dealing with injuries or recovering from one. His knowledge of injury rehabilitation is truly impressive, and he tailors every workout specifically to my needs, ensuring my injury isn’t aggravated. Matty creates a lot of safety and focuses on building strength around my back injury without pushing too hard. He’s also funny and will keep you very entertained. Your session will be over before you realize!

Fitness and working out was something new to my partner and I. We were definitely nervous and the gym always seemed intimidating-until we met Matty. He provides a super comfortable environment to start your fitness journey and really customizes the workouts to your specific level of fitness. From our first session to now, we feel so much stronger and more confident. After each session we leave feeling like we accomplished a great workout. Matty is kind, knowledgeable , and is a great teacher. I connected with Matty about 3 months before my wedding to help me feel my best for the big day. I do not live in the area, but he helped me put together a plan that included recommendations for workout splits along with a nutrition plan. He helped me track what I was eating, understand my habits and gave advise on where I could make substitutions. His focus wasn't around restricting my diet to the point of misery, but finding ways where I could eat what I loved and still reach my goals (I still ate pizza!).

I showed up on my wedding day feeling my absolute best - strong, fit and happy. I credit a lot of that to Matty's support. His passion for what he does along with his positive and empathetic nature make him a terrific coach and trainer.

Matty was recommended to me by a good friend. Upon my initial assessment, I knew I’d sign up with him for PT. First, Matty is such a friendly, cheerful, and easy-going guy. He’s the kind of trainer that cheers you up all the way while you’re finishing a challenging set. Second, he incorporates a variety of exercises in his training program. Although I’ve worked out for many years and tried many different programs, I still learned a few exercises from him, which have now become my favorite exercises. Third, he is transparent and acceptive. He welcomes my input and makes adjustments to his program based on my preferences and feedback, which makes it more challenging (to my liking) and interesting. I’m enjoying my training with Matty and will definitely recommend him!

I trained with Matty for 10 sessions in order to work on my strength and lifting. Each session was organized and balanced with various exercises and accessory work based on my needs/goals. He is so easy going and clearly explained not just how but the why. I loved celebrating all of my gains with him! The gym he coaches out of is small, but it had everything that we needed. Matty is amazing! As a trainer, Matty is methodical, personable and always willing to listen to your goals. I’ve had ten sessions with Matty and in those ten sessions, Matty has given me the tools and the confidence to help me reach my goals—these are tools that I am able to use and further develop for the rest of my life! Matty’s method is to first understand your goals and your current condition. He then sets out a customized program and make adjustments along the way to make sure the goals are on track.
