Large space, good dance floor, great music, nice seating, safe, good parking, centrally located in the middle. Good instructors. Good leads come. Gender balanced. Good place for beginners, friendly. Not too hot. People switch partners.
No 4 dance tandas. We hate 4 dance tandas. Water provided. Easy to pay. Weekly.

Took my first hip-hop class here and felt welcomed right away. I accidentally signed up for a class above my skill, but the instructor was patient and broke the choreography into digestible chunks. This is an awesome place to learn dance in a supportive environment!

The visiting World Champions: Carla Rossi and Juan Luis Salvo performed: 2 dances, excellently, impressively and inspiringly! Dancing floor is medium sized, with plenty of room for 40 to 50 dancers and who are the best mannered group in this area! The organizers have a hand in shaping the experience (calling out, even banning “bad apples”) credit to Jessica and Gustavo.

I just took a beginning tango lesson on Sunday afternoon and was very impressed with both the facility and the teachers. 😀They broke the steps down, so it was easy for a beginner to follow, but the steps were complicated enough to make it challenging if you were an intermediate dancer.
-the teachers explain the steps clearly
-the dancers were very friendly and encouraging
-I didn’t have a partner, but I felt completely at ease. They rotated, so everyone had a chance to practice.
-I thought it was an excellent studio and super fun. I’m looking forward to going back next week.

Absolutely love this place!
Jessica, Tristan, and Rhazel are all incredible instructors—passionate, skilled, and genuinely welcoming! Their salsa and bachata classes are fun, well-structured, and approachable for all levels. Heather is also amazing—she teaches West Coast Swing and brings real professional-level expertise while keeping things relaxed and friendly.

The studio has such a positive, inclusive energy. I’ve seen people of all ages—from young adults to seniors—and of all backgrounds, genders, and walks of life dancing and having a great time together. It’s currently 18 and up, but they’re planning to open up classes for teens soon. It’s a truly welcoming environment where everyone feels at home, regardless of experience or identity. There’s no pressure—just great vibes and a shared love of dance.

They host social dances and parties regularly, and the instructors even join in and help you out on the floor. It’s a rare and wonderful mix of highly talented dancers who are also gifted teachers.

On top of all that, it’s an incredible value—not just for the high quality of instruction, but for the sheer variety of classes available throughout the week. Whether you’re brand new to dance or looking to level up, I can’t recommend this place enough!

My fiancé and I came here for a wedding first dance workshop and the class exceeded our expectations. Kim and Jessica were incredibly helpful and attentive and we learned so much in just 2 hours. We both felt we got a great value and the class was well worth the price. I would definitely recommend to other couples looking to get started preparing for their first dance.

Monday became my favorite day of the week since I started my west coast swing classes with Heather. Heather is professional, attentive, generous, and has a great sense of humor.

I have progressed from a complete beginner to an intermediate level in three months. I had my first social dance party in five months of practice.
Thank you Heather and Motion Arts center!

And although it was my husband's first time ever dancing, and my first time Tangoing, we felt very supported in the class and hopeful that we can pick this up.
Gustavo and Jessica were wonderful teachers, and they gave us some extra attention when she saw us struggling.

We just bought 2x10 class packages because of them🫶 can’t wait til next class!!

Tristan & Rhazel are AMAZING!!! Before I took their bachata class, my hips did lie. Tristan and Rhazel have made my hips completely honest!

You can really feel that they care, and they always come up with creative and fun ways to ‘make it click’ for me on how to go through the movements. Can’t thank them enough!

I’ve been trying to find a place that teaches Cumbia on the Peninsula, and not only is this the only one I’ve been able to find, the instructors (Tristan and Rhazel) are reallllly fun and good!

They teach fundamentals really well, and are super observant at a group and individual level. They adapt the speed/progression of the class to the group each time, so that everyone can keep up and still have fun. It’s also cool to get the individual pointers - they’re super attentive to everyone’s “issues” and explain things really well. I’m more confident about dancing with the novio now, which is a plus haha.

They have package deals and drop in pricing, which is helpful if your schedule is irregular.

They have a dance party every last Thursday as well!

Gustavo and Jessica were really great Tango teachers! I took a workshop before the Malonga, I am a beginner at Tango,, and they taught me some really key important foundational basics about how to follow that other teachers hadn’t taught. I live in San Francisco and it will be worth it for me to track to San Mateo to learn from them. I also enjoy the floor at the studio and it is laid out very nice.

Fantastic tango teachers and venue. Jesica and Gustavo (USA Tango Champions) explain clearly and repeatedly a pattern, the leader/follower synchronization, and emphasize not just the move, but the subtle intricacies of the technique - the devil in the tango detail!
Even if I have been dancing for a long time, I always leave feeling like I learned, understood and can't wait to come back; very satisfying. Their classes are not the regular "out-of-the-box", but finely refined and deeply helpful, with just the right amount of personal attention. Classiness, finesse, elegance, ease, flow and grace - these are just some of the traits of their dance.

The venue is also great, a real dance studio with an impeccable wooden floor, and plenty of room. I'll check out the WCS and salsa classes they offer too.

For milongas, check out the live music events - it's really a treat whether you dance or not! I would highly recommend the teachers and the venue - one of the best for tango in the Bay Area.

Heather is an excellent instructor for WCS. She provides the teaching and the space to practice, but more importantly the emotional safety and time to ask questions and gather feedback and caters to the details we may need on an individual level. The class size helps but i think Heather's expertise is in this aspect of being a humble and patient leader/instructor. Would recommend this class to anyone i know!

I recently had the pleasure of taking a beginner heels dance class with Mimi, and I can't recommend it enough! From the moment I walked into the studio, I was struck by how inviting and beautifully designed the space is. The atmosphere is vibrant and encouraging, making it the perfect environment for dancers of all levels.

Mimi is an incredible instructor—her energy is infectious, and she has a knack for breaking down the movements in a way that’s easy to understand, even for someone like me who’s new to dancing in heels. She creates a supportive environment that makes you feel comfortable stepping out of your comfort zone. I appreciated how she took the time to give personalized feedback, ensuring everyone felt confident in their abilities.

The studio offers a fantastic variety of dance classes, catering to different styles and skill levels. Whether you’re looking to explore hip-hop, contemporary, or, of course, heels, there’s something for everyone. It’s clear that this is a place where dancers can grow and explore their passion.

Overall, my experience in the beginner heels class was empowering and fun. I left feeling more confident in my dance skills and excited to return for more classes. If you’re looking for a welcoming studio with talented instructors and a diverse range of classes, definitely check this place out!

I’ve spent two years in Buenos Aires and I can tell you this is the real deal... authentic Argentine Tango! Jesica and Gustavo break it down so it’s approachable for beginners. And if you’re more experienced, they teach foundational technique and useful sequences for the milonga too. For the group classes, you can either come with a partner or solo (we rotate partners.). TLDR;
I've been going here for just under 3 months and it's been great. My main focus has been to learn Salsa On1, but the lessons are so good that if my schedule opens up, I tend to go to other dance classes as well. I started from 0 experience and now know enough to apply what I've learned to dancing full songs. The teachers here are very detailed and easy to talk to. The owners are nice. They have 2 studios and they're sized good--especially the main one, which is quite large. The website is pretty well organized, making it easy to schedule and pay for classes ahead of time--it also adds them to your calendar, which is great. The people who come to the class have also been pretty friendly and there are regulars that I'm slowly getting to know.

The long version:
I've tried the following classes and my thoughts on them:
1. Salsa On1 Beginner - They have the most classes available per week of any place I've found near this area and there are multiple teachers--so you get a chance to improve the breadth of your knowledge.
2. Hip Hop Beginner - I tried all 3 teachers. They're all good and each teacher has a different style, so there's something here for everyone (in terms of the pace and complexity of the choreo)
3. Bachata Beginner - These were really fun and well taught--once I'm more experienced with Salsa On1, I'll look to go to these classes more
4. Cumbia Beginner - These were fun and I find that Cumbia classes are harder to come by, so I'm excited that this is here, so I plan on going to these more often eventually as well
5. Latin Motion - This is probably my favorite class, because it teaches the fundamentals of how to dance all latin dance styles in a more aesthetic manner. I've gone to learn salsa now at about 3-4 places around this area and this is probably the best class for this particular thing that I've experienced. They place a lot of emphasis on body isolation, individual work, frame, weight transfer, etc. and apply it all progressively. I went from marching out salsa to now grooving a little bit. It's a must-attend class.
6. Private Lessons - These have been great. Multiple teachers are available for these and they help you to learn at your own pace.
7. Salsa On2 - I don't think this class is offered anymore.

Other highlights:
- Variety of classes
- Multiple teachers teaching the classes that I've gone to
- They review what was taught at the end of each class so you can record it and practice it outside of class
- Latin dance party 1x/mo - This is a GREAT opportunity to practice what you've learned, because many of the people there will be students so the vibe is chill and they play a variety of music so that people get a chance to practice multiple styles of dance. Since people are students, they're patient. I even learned some bachata when I went, even though that's not what I'm actively practicing. It was great.
- Great private lessons - I've learned so much going to these. If I had all the time in the world, I'd go to these like 3-4 days a week.

I joined the beginner class because i was taking my boyfriend to his first tango class ever. I have studied for Tango for 12 years, including multiple trips to Buenos aires. I've been very lucky to study with many wonderful teachers, so I could recognize that Jesica and Gustavo are among the best. They focus on the fundamental concepts, not memorization of patterns. They clearly saw that different students were at different levels even within the beginner class and helped each person individually, without singling anyone out. It was beautiful to see.

It really says something that somebody with 12 years of experience and somebody who is taking their first class ever could both enjoy the class and learn so much in one hour. I recommend this class to anyone who dances or wants to dance tango.

I love taking tango classes with Gustavo and Jesica! They are world class teachers--clear in their instruction, kind and patient in their interactions with students. I have been taking private classes with Gustavo for a couple of years now. He always stresses the importance of solid body integration as the foundation of a graceful movement. Through constant, patient reinforcement of the basics, he has helped me overcome many of my bad movement habits (and I have many). With his help I am also able to increase my sensitivity to/awareness of whoever I am dancing with, while maintaining more control of my own axis and balance at the same time. This is very hard! These details make all the difference in my dancing. The best way to make progress in your tango is to make the investment in private classes, in addition to the group classes.

I came to Motion Arts after recently discovering that I love cumbia. After several failed attempts at learning other styles of dance, I was sure that I couldn't dance. I signed up for a cumbia dance class here purely as an attempt to learn the steps to a genre I loved, but fully expecting to hate the experience and to be even more convinced that formally learning how to dance wasn't for me. I COULDN'T HAVE BEEN MORE WRONG! Tristan and Rhazel welcomed me and the other students with warm energy and enthusiasm. Tristan broke down the steps with fun analogies and in a way that I could *actually* understand. His lightheartedness and humor made learning *fun*, even when my mind was confused as all get out. When I left that first class, I realized I had a smile on my face the entire time. It was *fun*. And I left actually able to remember the basic steps. So I signed up for another, and another, and eventually decided to get a Class Pack of 10 and also taking their Merengue class. Every time, it was the same- Tristan and Rhazel welcomed me and the others with warm, enthusiastic energy, cheered us on as we made noticeable progress, and encouraged us when we struggled with a step or move, always allowing time for questions and repeated practice. I'm super excited and grateful that I found this place!

Valuable classroom instruction! I have been taking the bachata classes and am very happy with the teaching quality. Like most schools, the classes will focus at least some part of the day's lesson on introducing and practicing a sequence of moves. However, one thing that particularly impressed me with the Motion Arts Center is how active of a role the instructors take in observing/noticing how exactly the leads perform their movements when practicing a sequence. For example, in one class, Monica stopped group partner practice to do a short deep dive into fixing a bad trend she noticed among multiple leaders where we (myself included!) were poorly signaling a few of our turns. She clearly communicated and demonstrated how to tweak our arm and hand positions, had the class work on those hotfixes for a few minutes, and then moved right back into the original class material. I've taken both the beginner and intermediate bachata classes and seen this level of interaction from every instructor!

This level of attention to detail might seem kind of basic, but I've been a student at other dance studios where instructors do not make any effort to provide this level of immediate feedback in a group class setting, instead preferring to just stick to finishing out the lesson.

I highly recommend the Motion Arts Center!

I've been taking tango lessons with Jesica and Gustavo for 8 years and there is no one else I would trust as my instructors. Not only are they expert teachers of technique, they also teach equally important principles of musicality and the etiquette of social dance.

Technical expertise aside, I feel GOOD and I have so much fun when I take classes with Jesica and Gustavo. They are always positive and encouraging which is so important when learning something new. When I was first starting to learn the dance, I became frustrated with myself, but both were always quick to offer guided instruction and build my confidence. 8 years later, I am still learning with each lesson, but I can look back and say they have made me a confident dancer who can dance freely and have fun every time I'm on the dance floor. Any compliments I ever receive I always attribute to them because everything I know I owe it all to J&G!

THANK YOU Jesica and Gustavo for providing a comfortable space to grow and learn. It is an added bonus that they have the smoothest floors I've ever stepped on. They take immaculate care of their floor as you can see them constantly cleaning the special hardwood to ensure the best surface for dancing.

If you're on the fence, let this be your sign to come on in and take your first class!!

Best dance lesson ever! I had an extremely enjoyable and successful first beginer Bachata class with Jesica Horno as my instructor.
Jesica is an extremly competent teacher, who is utmost friendly, patient and motivating.
She explains and shows every movement in great detail, and has important tips for the execution.
Flaws are immediately detected by her and commented with a smile,
so you learn everything right from the start, from the movement to the timing. Nothing feels like a mistake here.
After one hour I could do four different rotations, which is just amazing.
Even though I was told as a teenager that I couldn't dance at all.
Go there and have fun! Thanks Jesica!

They are also outstanding teachers. Their level of precision in their dancing and the ability to transmit their knowledge efficiently are unique. I have gone through many teachers for almost 20 years, and I know when I see it.

Their English speaking skills are impeccable. They are also very patient, repeating the patterns until they know you got them.

The place also hosts the milongas with the best music in the area.
Gustavo is an accomplished DJ. His knowledge of tango orchestras, singers, and styles is unrivaled. Gustavo does not belong to the category of DJs following others' books; he is one of those few writing the book. Also, the sound of the place is hands down the best in the area.

As a cherry on the pie, Gustavo and Jessica consistently host live tango music at their place, and this area needs more live music!

Look no more for a place to learn, dance as an accomplished dancer, or watch live tango shows.

This is a really nice space that I think is easily overlooked.

I do the salsa classes regularly and Yui, Pablo, Jesica are great instructors. I’ve learned a lot. Classes are really good for beginners to drop in and have enough depth for folks with some experience.

If y’all are interested in tango, salsa, bachata, or west coast swing, y’all should check this out!

My wife and I have been dancing Argentine Tango since 2014 and because of my work, we have been able to travel the world dancing tango. From late 2018 to the beginning of COVID we spent a third of each month dancing and taking lessons in Buenos Aires. For couples wanting to learn to dance Argentine tango as a couple (it is more challenging when both partners are starting from scratch) nowhere have we have encountered anyone better than Gustavo. Gustavo had a deep understanding of human psychology which allows him to guide even the most strong willed couples, such as our selves ;-) peacefully and productively along the path to Tango. And, for all students, he has an an uncanny ability to not just present how to dance tango but to actually transfer the knowledge into your mind an body. With Gustavo you will learn and progress especially in his private lessons. For more advanced students who really want to refine their dance into something amazing, I have found that Jesica's ballet training and understanding of biomechanics allows her to dive deeply into the art and take her students to a very high level of dance and enjoyment. Her private lessons are amazing and enlightening.

Excellent place to learn dances. The tango teachers are great. The tango classes are really good specially if you are a beginner, because the beginner classes are very gradual and they don’t overwhelm you, but focus on technique so moves make sense as you advance. The milongas are really good too.

This is absolutely the best dance experience I've ever had as a beginner to Salsa. Since the very first day at the studio I was welcomed with positive energy. This was especially amazing since I stumbled across this studio for the first time in September with absolutely no knowledge of how to dance Salsa and had no prior dance experience. Between the beginner and intermediate classes I was able to gain the confidence to put myself out there and quickly picked it up. Pablo and Hui, the instructors, are such amazing teachers and always so welcoming, even inviting the students to go to Salsa socials with them.

Besides On2 Salsa they also teach Tango, Hip Hop, Bachata, and other dance art forms. I would recommend everyone to come and try out classes. I wish more people knew about this studio. Gustavo, Jesica, Pablo, and Hui are genuinely some of the most amazing people I've had the pleasure of interacting with.

A terrific studio to learn and practice dance. The teachers are skilled and kind, and so much fun! The ballroom is among the best in the bay area, large, solid and has remained in amazing condition year after year. Specializing in Argentine Tango, they offer many other kinds of dance. Options for all levels. Stop reading, go sign up, go dance!

If you are looking for great tango teachers, drop in to a class with Jesica and Gustavo. They are amazing. Not only are they world class and US champion dancers, they are knowledgeable and patient teachers. The range of classes covers everything from the basics of posture, walk, and the embrace to the nuances of musicality and artistry. Their successful teaching style is a multi-pronged approach which includes demonstration, practice, questions, and one-on-one feedback. The studio has easy parking, a great floor, good light, and excellent acoustics. The milonga sentimental is fun and welcoming.

Gustavo and Jesica provide a wonderful experience learning to dance Argentine tango - even for a (formerly) desk-bound engineer. Clearly they know how to dance well, but they also know how to teach well. Their patience seems boundless, they tailor their teaching at a personal level, and the dancing quickly becomes a pleasurable activity. The wide range of lesson types being offered include class lessons, workshops, and private lessons. I've found that each provides a different perspective to learning, and the mixture definitely results in well-rounded learning.

Of importance is also the wide range of dancers that come to their classes - this community is essential to make for a pleasant opportunity to meet and dance with a variety of partners. And I am constantly aware of, and appreciative of, the patience of the other dancers for someone such as myself who is definitely needing to learn more.

And since Argentine tango can be even more challenging as one gets better at it, I anticipate several decades of continuing to learn and improve. I am pleased to be starting with such high quality training from their studio, so that my journey will be both a pleasure as well as technically well-grounded.

Review for tango classes: Jesica and Gustavo are very good teachers. They explained difficult concepts in a way that I can understand. They are also very positive, kind and nurturing.

Review for the studio: top notch studio. Best floor I've danced on. High quality sounds and ventilation.

Review of location: in the center of San Mateo. I go to two classes and grab a bite in between or after. Many good restaurants within walking distance.

Excellent place to learn Tango. Gustavo and Jessica are very good teachers and dancers. They are simply some of the best around! The community is also great! Just know that you have to spend the time around this complicated dance to really learn it. It helps to be a bit analytical and sensitive.
