Did not have a great experience here. I'd give it maybe 3 stars until I went to cancel my membership. First, the place smells like a bad combo of feet and climbing chalk. All climbing gyms have something of a funk, but this place is the worst. I joined to take the yoga classes mostly, but that's a hard pass.

Classes start on time, but the gym allows members to show up late. When they do, they move the curtain, light up the whole room, and the noise of 100 climbers floods the room. Right in the time when you're settling in and trying to focus. Then the weight room is above the yoga room, so you get to hear weights slamming down during class, which is also disruptive. I found the classes super uneven, some being great (Bronwyn) and others being a weird combo of loud music over soft voices so you can't hear the instructor, or instructors borderline shouting at folks to expel breath as loud as possible. Not what I'm looking for.

So, no problem, it's not for me. It's close to home, price is reasonable, and they have good climbing facilities. Boulder area isn't the best, but the rest of it is quite good with interesting routes changed often...enough.

When I went to cancel, I was hit with a "policy" that you have to cancel on or before the 25th of a month or they will charge you for another month. I reached out on the 26th, 5 days before the next charge cycle. Seemed like plenty. Complained, go zero response. So basically I consider they robbed me of $110, because of course the cancellation policy is not visible..until you go to cancel.

Hope it was worth the money, Movement. Cannot recommend.

I came for the Yoga. I'm new to the practice, so I don't know what all the etiquette should be, but I find trying to do yoga at this place SUPER distracting. Having a weight room above the yoga class means feet pounding on the ceiling, and at least once per class someone slams down a weight. That'll snap yer flow.

They let people come in late which fills the room with light and all the noise from the climbing area.

Bums me out because it's close to home, the prices are decent, and there are a couple good instructors there.

Maybe my expectations are off, but I kinda doubt it. Will seek instruction elsewhere next month.

This gym has done the most improvements out of any gym in the bay. They actively try to improve the experience for their climbers; in the last year they've:
- improved the lighting in the bouldering areas
- added air conditioning
- added a spray wall
- got new fitness area equipment
- (edit 09/24/2025): added a kilter board

Also the fitness area is my favorite in any gym for the number and variety of machines, and pullup bar setup.

It's so good to see a gym that is actually willing to make change :) keep doing what you're doing, belmont

Feedback:
- set more static crimp lines
- please clean your fans they look atrocious. please. my lungs q.q

This gym is definitely on the older and smaller side, but definitely still fun to go to.

Edited: It’s a decent gym with neat setting. Sometimes it can be crowded and then it feels a bit cramped.

Original review: Climbing etiquette is to be desired from several at this gym. Don’t be surprised when someone is suddenly coming up on an intersecting route without warning; if bouldering be aware of aloof people below you.

I always loved this location! Their two bouldering areas are fun with routes constantly changing, and a ton of top rope routes as well. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, with a small gear shop to get shoes or any of the other climbing essentials you want/need.

They also offer day passes and rental gear if you're just starting out or want to try out the location!

Parking isn't the best, but it's worth it for the climbing! Climb on!

Today, a girl from Movement team ran through my fall zone, and I fell on her. This is insane. How come someone from their team doesn’t know the safety rules at a climbing gym? What the coaches teach everyday? Are they doing their job?

it’s not motivating to climb here, the gym is so small and the setting schedule won’t catch up if you’re bouldering > 2 times a week (I.e you’ll soon run out of problems to climb). To make it worse, The setters often spent the whole afternoon (if not more) to set the bouldering sections and from what I can tell, most of their time is spent chatting rather than actual setting. As a result, you’ll only get to climb less than 3/4 of the (already super limited) problems during the daytime. Unfortunately, At this time it’s the only gym in the mid-peninsula area and I’m counting by the days for the new gym in RWC (not with movement) to open. More likely than not, I’ll switch there, or just keep my movement membership so the SC and SV gyms are still available.

Get a handle on your staff.

Front desk lady was nice. Was my third climbing experience but first time here and took a class this time.

Took my girl along to learn but two of the instructor’s shadows/helpers (who did nothing but stand and judge) standing next to me were staring and joking about my girl’s ass while she was climbing thinking I couldn’t hear nor did they know I was with her. Totally unprofessional and she noticed. It did not make it easy to learn and in fact I think could be dangerous if you can’t focus while learning.

I do judo so we’re trained to fall by rolling back and slapping the ground to disperse the force, which is the opposite of what you want to do here, but practicing falling and ridding of the habit was of course annoying. Worse, having the helpers laugh at me fail is not encouraging; not so much for me, but for others.

Mind these things if you want to try this place out because besides the fees, ultimately this experience made me and my girl drop climbing.

I love climbing here and really appreciate the awesome space you’ve created! I was wondering if you’d consider stocking bottled coffee for purchase. It’d be super convenient for a quick caffeine boost before or after a session and I bet a lot of climbers would love the option.

I'm reviewing this gym as a training facility for rock climbing. I have not been to any of their yoga or fitness classes, so I can't comment on that.

The good:
1. As far as an all around training facility, this place is above average. I've been to climbing gyms across the country, and this one has just about everything. Bouldering, TR, lead cave, a variety of cracks, and they just installed new exercise equipment (Feb 2025). They have a good variety of free weights and machines. They always have a good mix of climbing routes/bouldering problems from intro level to advanced.
2. They're constantly re-setting routes/problems somewhere in the gym. They have a schedule posted for when they will re-set routes in specific parts of the gym, so if you have a project you're working on, you won't be surprised when it changes.
3. Friendly staff. They've always been super helpful whenever it is needed.
4. Texture on the walls. It seems like most new gyms use Walltopia, but this old school texture is slightly more realistic, especially when climbing the cracks.
5. They just installed new AC and there is new lighting in the bouldering pits. The ventilation is pretty decent. I have been in gyms where I can see chalk in the air. That's not a problem here.
6. Classes. Movement has some good skills classes at all their facilities. I've taken a couple, and I think they're pretty good.

The not so good:
1. It's the only climbing gym on the mid-peninsula (unless you have access to the tiny Stanford gym). That's not a Belmont problem though, and at least there is a gym for this area. But it's the only option in one of the most densely populated areas of the country. Like most climbing gyms, it gets busy between about 4-8pm. I try to climb in the mornings when it is not crowded for this reason. Otherwise, you can expect to wait your turn, and you have to really be cognizant of the people climbing around you. Both Belmont and Touchstone have announced new bouldering gyms which should open in the near future - hopefully that will help disperse the crowds a little. Belmont will still be the only ropes gym in the area though.
2. Size. I've heard people complain about the gym's size. It's really more about the growing crowds in the afternoons. Belmont is middle of the pack as far as size when compared to the other Bay Area gyms. Pac Pipe is the largest, and there are several much smaller gyms in the Bay Area. Movement could use another gym in the mid-peninsula for it's growing clientele.
3. There are no cracks on lead. They should really install some draws next to one (or more) of the cracks on the foam wall to somewhat simulate climbing cracks on gear.
4. Lead checks have to be scheduled well in advance. I've done lead checks at other gyms with little or no advance notice. I've had friends try to do drop-in lead checks several times at Belmont with no luck. It seems that most of the employees should be qualified to do this, but I don't think that's the case.

We visited today and enjoyed the routes so much we plan to come back at the end of the week. Like another reviewer we were skeptical based on some of the negative reviews but found them to be completely baseless. I have a gym membership on the east coast as well as just south of the bay here on the west coast. Both of those gyms also cater to the school age crowd between 3-6pm. Best thing to do is just not go during those hours if you are not ok with this. As far the complaint about the staff/gym being very rigid- Good for them! I very much appreciated the questions the front desk posed to us about our climbing experience. I also like that they are one of the few gyms still requiring the wearing of your belay card. Safety was drilled into me in my early years of climbing and it is still as important now as it was then! And lastly, our regular gym here on the west coast also doesn't have heat or AC so this Movment location isn't the only climbing gym with out those amenities.
The women's bathroom was very clean and overall large with showers, a sauna and changing area. It was not at all crowded today, perhaps many people are travelling for the holiday but it was nice to have our pick of most anything we wanted to clmb. I really enjoyed the routes here. Many of the harder climbs were challenging without being all crimpers which also made them fun to climb!

Lots of amenities, good amount of top rope real estate. Bouldering is not good though, the layout is terrible. People fall on each other frequently. They have routes going over and around the entryway to one bouldering section which is braindead. With the amount of traffic is at an entry way, there really shouldn’t be any routes there. Hopefully they can figure out their space issue so they can fit more bouldering routes in a safe way, like perhaps expand the bouldering section further out and removing a couple top rope routes.

This place has really went down hill in the 2 years I've been coming here. The place becomes a daycare from around 3 to 6 in the afternoon. Usually, you will see one employee with around 10 kids and multiple groups like this. It makes a small bouldering area hard to use, especially when they are blocking whole sections of the bouldering area. The whole place needs a deep cleaning or renovation. The shower rooms are disgusting and don't seem to get cleaned regularly. Most of the towels are nasty and feel like a scrubbing pad.
The routes and boulders in this gym change very rarely. It's not uncommon to see routes stay the same for over 2 months. Due to how small the bouldering area is, this really makes for a subpar experience.
For a premium gym membership price, this place needs to do better.
I can't wait for the new Touchstone gym to open in Redwood City. Maybe then Movement will be forced to do better here. Of their 4 gyms in the Bay Area, this is by far the worst.

Incredibly dated interior and in dire need of some renovations or deep cleaning. Most of the holds are worn out. The bouldering section is cramped and it's super uncomfortable to be around when it gets busy. The floor mats are worn out, tape coming loose and gives off a subtly unpleasant odor.

It's sad that there are no other climbing gyms in the area so there is almost no reason for this place to make any significant improvements

I really want to give this location a better review but I think this place is starting to push on the boundary of acceptable standards in a climbing gym, especially relative to other local Movement gyms. Location is small and old, and let me be clear that I'm not holding my review against that.

Over the last few years that I've been there, I noticed that the gym is starting to get into worse shape in terms of wear and tear as well as generally cleanliness. The ventilation is poor and there's no AC, but that's not an excuses for holds and equipment to feel dirty. Keeping the place clean and fresh and not smelling funky on a hot day should just be a norm.

No AC is pretty bad for a gym facility. It's unbearable on a really hot day and I feel bad for the staff who are stuck here. Is Movement corporate really so cheap that they can't afford to upgrade, even when they keep increasing the fees?

The setting can feel a little slow - I am sure some people prefer that so they can have time to project things, but for a smaller gym with fewer climbs, changing things more frequently to keep it fresh would be nice.

The redeeming features here are it's location and staff. It's the only gym in the mid peninsula so people will do to come here under new gyms open in the area.

I think the summer coaches/staff can be a bit more attentive when they're teaching classes with young kids. Too many times a kid will run under a climber and it creates a potentially bad situation for everybody.

This place is a hard pass. Been to a lot of climbing gyms and this one is a disappointment. Sad it's the only one in it's area. I'll drive a bit farther to go to a better climbing gym.

This gym is way overcrowded, and the routes are up way too long for how few of them there are. The routes don't have a realistic rock like movement to them... yes I realize that this is a gym but some gyms have routes that more closely simulate movement on real rock, this is not one of those gyms. The parking is pretty bad too. Lots of young kids

At least the people that work there are nice and they provide towels in the locker rooms.

Absolutely atrocious experience with Movement Gym. They don't even deserve a single star. My 13-year-old endured a nightmarish incident due to the sheer negligence of the coach and management. On her very first day of rock climbing, she was directed to the boulder without any proper instructions from the coach. Scaling the wall about 6 feet, she suffered a horrendous fall when descending, her leg slipping without any guidance from the absent coach.

To add insult to injury, the coach was nowhere to be found when she took the fall. The aftermath? A fractured ankle, a bruised forehead, and her glasses sent flying. The gym bothered to call only after the accident, instructing me to pick up my injured daughter. Shockingly, neither the management nor the coach bothered to check on the well-being of the child after such a severe incident.

The blatant negligence of the gym inflicted immense pain on my daughter, leaving her bedridden for weeks. I strongly caution all parents to reconsider a hundred times before entrusting their kids to this establishment.

This review is mostly for bouldering, as I did not top rope. Bouldering section is extremely small, only two areas. Super crowded even at 2-3pm on a Thursday. There's very little room on the mats to sit...very little seating overall. Gym is old and holds feel like they have been up for a very long time. Some holds moved when climbing and didn't feel the most safe. Not the most clean either, but staff are friendly which may be the only redeeming factor.

Good gym, both for bouldering and more traditional exercise. Unfortunately the men’s showers are filthy and in disrepair. I use the showers multiple times a week and have been keeping mental track of some of the dirt, trash, and leaks. In the last 1.5 months, I they haven’t cleaned the shower floors a single time. And the detachable shower head in one of the stalls leaks so bad from the hose that the head is useless.

Friends and I have all complained to the staff, who all just say “we’ll make a note”, then nothing is done about it.

Come on guys, mopping the shower floors every few days is the least you could do.

Probably the worst gym in the bay. Local parents treat it as a daycare and staff does nothing about the hordes of children running around. boulders stay up for months at a time, which wouldn't be a problem if there weren't 2 tiny areas for bouldering. Just go to the sunnyvale or santa clara movement instead.

EDIT: a lot of things since this review have changed, routes get changed more often, more staff watching out for unsupervised kids, it is still a pretty small gym, but not a lot they can do about that.

I love climbing and it takes a lot for me to dislike a climbing gym. I tried very hard to like this gym since it’s the closest to me but failed. The tiny, dark, crowded bouldering walls, limited style of routes, the lead climbing walls mixed with top roping routes, staff giving belay tests without consistent standards, etc. Some staff also seem to be a bit snobby about climbing.

While my partner and were trying to take a test I wanted to wait for a 5.8 that was occupied (I was helping my partner get tested at the end of my climbing session and I was already tired). The staff pointed out that a 5.10a was available and I said “I prefer something easier since your rule allows me to pick the route”. And he said “but it’s a 5.10a”. His attitude was not the best way I’ve imagined to end my climbing session. Also ironically, after my partner passed the test, the staff told me if I were taking the test that day he would’ve failed me (I was already lead certified in the same gym). You expected the gym to have some consistent standard on certifying people…

A climbing gym is where I disconnect from work and enjoy myself after work but I often feel frustrated in this gym. Switched my membership to touchstone and feel VERY happy with Dogpatch and Pacific Pipe.

I bought passes for this gym last month but with the storms and current conditions, its been difficult to make it in. I asked for an extension or some sort of solution but the gym was extremely unhelpful, mean, and not understanding with my issues and circumstances. I get that they have a business to run but they don’t bother to listen nor care about their customers.

If you’re just looking for a gym to climb at, this seems to be the only one in the area unfortunately. If you want a community, def go elsewhere.

It's a nice little climbing gym. If you have some time to kill or close by check it out. It can get super crowded in the afternoon. Bouldering is not as crowded as the top rope where you have to wait your turn to climb. Bouldering classes in the afternoon will overwhelm the bouldering walls.

Parking can be hard. I'd say it's okay to park in the auto shop lot when it's past their closing time. If you can't find street parking there's parking at the shopping center a block over.

Truly a nice place. I've been to other indoor climbing venues and the big difference is that here they don't take shortcuts: no automatic systems, you have to make your figure eight knot and use the provided gri-gri's as belay devices. I am not a great fan of the gri-gri (I like the "robot" better) but I really appreciate they try to stay close to what one would experience on a real mountain. I have seen they have some treadmills in the mezzanine but I didn't go there. The personnel is most caring.

Bouldering problems in both the beginner and intermediate grades (no idea about higher grades) are pretty heavily sandbagged for commercial gyms, including the other PG gyms in the area (Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, SF). I would absolutely not take any newer friends here; the problems are consistently 1-2 grades higher than at any other gym I've been to in the US (~dozen) and are mostly inaccessible to beginners. The boulder area is small, so you feel the lack of accessible problems keenly. Can't speak for top rope.

Facilities seem clean, if generally small. No dedicated parking. I'd personally make the effort to drive the extra 20-30 min to another PG instead of this one.

PG Belmont is my favorite gym to go to. It may be small in comparison to the other gyms, but it has such a welcoming vibe that I always want to go back. Amazing and friendly staff, clean facilities, great climbing, and a gym with squat racks! Who could ask for more ☺️ love you, PG Belmont!!

Excellent staff and facilities. This is the original Planet Granite location and they make it work with the space they have. Always a good experience here.

I started climbing arround 4 years ago at planet granite in Belmont and since then, I have climbed at dozens of different gyms in the bay and in colorado. I also work at a climbing gym and I have a fair amount of route setting experience. I believe that I have the right qualifications and experience in the climbing industry to say that the setting at this gym has significantly diminished. I know this gym is hard for the grade (way harder than it should be for a commercial gym) however, I’m not talking about the grades when I talk about the quality of the sets. For the people that do actively set at this gym, please dear god focus on handedness for all routes and focus on flow for your top rope and lead routes. I climbed the entire boulder set yesterday through about the v6 range and I can confidently say that there was not a single problem I would have been proud to have put up myself. Very few problems felt like they were forerun and many of the problems were extremely hight depended.

Now about the grades. I do not know if you’re doing consensus grading and that might be the problem or if you guys just decided that you want to be 2 grades harder than anything in the area. The gym that I climb at the most in colorado is considered to be fairly “sandbagged” in terms of indoor climbing. Some v5s and a lot of v6s climbed like v7s in my gym back home. Your roped setting is also significantly harder than it should be. I have quite recently flashed 2 12as outside in poudre canyon in colorado and I struggled to top rope 11cs in your gym. Now for the higher grades, this doesnt really matter but for people that don’t climb and are in good shape, v2s should be accessible. I shouldn’t have to watch a group of friends project v1s and v2s because the movement is convoluted and too difficult for the grade. All in all, the setting is just out of wack in this gym.

If you own this gym, I highly recommend that you REQUIRE all of your setters to take at least a. Lvl 1 route setting cert course. After observing the current state of the gym, it kinda just seems like u don’t care. I mean if anyone wants to climb in Redwood City, San Carlos, or belmont, you guys are the only option. If there were any other option for climbing in the area, this gym would not succeed. You guys have the wall, the holds, and the facilities required for a great climbing gym. All you guys need is good setting and this gym could be great. Please make the gym great

Nice place for climbing, but bouldering section was pretty small. Also, there was a youth bouldering team that came in midway through my shift and took over one bouldering section. The coach was apologetic and encouraged me to ask them to move if need be, but there were just too many people in that bouldering section. Would be nice to know that that will be happening when you register for a timeslot.

Great rock gym with a homey feel.
Stark contrast from sunnyvale-
Solid weight/machine facilities as well as a good rope section.

Boulders are very stout and well set here, but the other area gyms have better bouldering areas. gym does have 2 moon boards though

I love Planet Granite and was very excited when they opened their doors after the COVID shutdown.

They presently require wearing a mask for safety which I was happy to do. However, I do have some personal safety concerns, detailed below.

1. During a very active belay, my wife's mask slid lower on her face and did not cover her nose. While still belaying someone came over and berated my wife for not wearing a mask properly. This distraction resulted in me being off belay at height for a substantial period in time.

2. While weightlifting with my mask on I had so much difficulty breathing that I briefly lost my vision. This was during my warm-up sets and hasn't happened before in may years of lifting.

As much as it pains me to say this (I do love Planet Granite) I cannot recommend going at the present time. It's not safe, with or without a mask.

Been coming to PG Belmont off and on for well over a decade now and while it's a great place in many ways, the way things are run has me wishing someone else would open a new gym in the area.

Pros: The climbing community here is great whether it's an open climb night or just hanging out in the bouldering room on a quiet sunday. Routes are fun and varied, staff working the floor is always chill.

While it gets busy on a weekday evening, there's usual a route to be found pretty quick and off peak times are great.

Cons: The classes. Events, birthdays, summer kids clubs are always a pain to in any gym but PG seems to really be good at scheduling stuff at all the wrong times. Lately that's extended to the workout area where class instructors will take over every pull-up bar for a half hour straight, run a class dominating floor space for twice that right in the middle of peak time. Not the PG community spirit at all.

Last but not least is the temperature controls. The bay area is getting warmer and warmer and while running AC is not helping the stem climate change, there's a reason other gyms use it or good fans or something to respond so the gym doesn’t end up warmer inside than out on a summer day. Fees rise, services should improve.

Fun place, good climbing but the place is too busy and too dated for the costs. High time for more options in the Peninsula to spread out and update.

I came in to buy a gift card. I did the long slow line and personnel was fixated on me filling up the waiver prior to selling me the gift card. I filled up their waiver, did the long line again and the blue hair person continued to insist that I made a mistake, which was only in the check mark about the type of my government issued ID. He mentioned that I need to fill out another waiver. Wait I have been there for 20 min already and haven’t been able to buy a gift card yet. I left. The lost a costumer. Don’t go there unless you have an hour to fill up and refill their waiver.

Really nice gym. It’s smaller than some of the other Bay Area gyms, but it’s really still a great gym. More of a cozy gym than a power house or tech gym.

It’s wonderful for first time visits, occasional, or the regular. If you’re a v11+ climber, you still have an occasional boulder and there is always the Moon board up stairs, but otherwise you might be underwhelmed.

It currently 2019, has a wonderful community (but this is always changing).

The training facility is great, I have met a number of non-climbers using the facility as well. They have lots of free weights, a large number of cardio machines, and a few classes like yoga and ab-centric stuff.

Staff is friendly and courteous.

Parking kinda sucks since they have no dedicated lot and you park a block away.

Been climbing here since 2017 and have really enjoyed it.

Not a bad gym. I can only speak for the bouldering sections, as I didn't have a belay partner when I went. They made pretty good use of wall space, and the grades were actually comparable to what you would expect when climbing outdoors. Most gyms inflate the grade in my opinion. They didn't have a lounge area or anything, but that may be due to limited space. They have a very nice locker room with sauna. The yoga studio and gym seemed pretty decent. I think there were also two system boards.

My go to gym for the past year. The staff is always friendly, not too crowded at night like 24 Hour Fitness, and the bouldering / top rope routes change often enough. Saturdays can get busy with families , but besides that it's great.

Definitely would give it a try if I were you. The best small climbing gym around.

Update : The newer staff is not as friendly and welcoming as the old start from a few months ago. And the men's shower drain is normally clogged from people's hair which can stay there for a few days at a time.

The oldest and smallest Planet Granite in the Bay area, with the shortest bouldering walls and fairly cramped spaces. The gym just remodeled its bathrooms, thankfully, which used to have dirty floors and showers that often clogged with frothy hairballs. But it's the only climbing gym in the peninsula so you really don't have much of a choice. :P

If I could give 0 out of 0, I would. This is merely a money making business. It lacks any higher purpose. If you want to rock climb for any other reason (care about nature, or other human beings sharing space with you on this planet, for instance) look elsewhere. A more fitting name for this business is “Planet Ego”

Great crowd and fun climbs.

A few areas for improvement:
-- Awful weekend hours, closes at 8pm on Sat and 6pm on Sun
-- Lack of parking, a weird problem in the suburbs
-- Quite expensive for a single visit, hard to bring friends.
-- Often crowded, especially after work hours
