Horrible class management for the fitness classes. You will be kicked off the rack mid workout for the fitness classes. Myself and other paying members have submitted feedback forms to management to limit the class sizes so that some racks are at least available to EVERYONE and not just the class

Rude, inconsistent, dismissive, and unhelpful staff members. The levels are labeled weirdly here and itβs super dirty here. This location needs to take a lesson from other Movement gyms. Actually super surprised from being at other locations to here! Never coming back to this location, would rather drive further than come back here. Just donβt waste your time here. Really hoping that management will hold their staff members more accountable regarding the cleanliness and customer interactions at the Santa Clara location. For paying 119/ a month, I expected way more than what I received here. Do better.
Edit: Just took a look at the reviews and it seems like other people have very unpleasant interactions with the front desk. Interesting!

Super fun bouldering gym with tons of problems, and some gym equipment. If you've climbed everything at their Sunnyvale location this is a great alternative to see some new problems and freshen up your skills.
There is one wall with a large over hang which is tons of fun, and you can usually find a fairly juggy problem to work on your strength and overhang techniques.
Another thing about this location is the bathrooms are incredibly clean. Not a huge deal, but it's nice to freshen up in there after a session!

Employees are incredibly kind and helpful. They allowed me to change my Day Pass to a membership after I'd already spent hours there! Everyone around is respectfully as well. Highly recommend! (I was sore for days after, haha)

Great gym. Coming here as my home gym all the time shows that you canβt really run out of things to do. Boulders are reset fairly rarely, though there is a lot of them. But there is always the kilter and tension board to fall back on, as well as the huge training area. The routes are interesting maybe above v5/v6, but problems under that are either crimp ladders or barely creative boulders. The setters themselves are awesome, as well as the community itself. I also appreciate that the kidsβ parties and groups are generally held under control and are contained in a small area. Staff is nice and bathrooms are good, but ventilation could use some work. Sure, the industrial fans stop it from being hot, but also causes the gym to be a cloud of chalk.

The climbing and staff are great, but the facilities could use a lot of work.
For example, the bathrooms - the probability of having soap and paper towels in a given sink is like 50%, and I find myself always botheringthe person next to me to get some soap. Keeping the bathroom supplies fully stocked seems like the bare minimum given the steep $117/mo membership price.
Unfortunately, it seems they can get away with it since thereβs no other climbing gym chain in South Bay (Sunnyvale has the same problem). The actual bouldering routes are well set (could change more frequently), but as someone who comes 3x a week, I dread the bathroom experience. I also feel like itβs an easy fix (just make sure the staff replace soap and paper towels every hour or two?). One of the water fountains has also been broken for at least a week, and the one working one has a red filter light. Also the ventilation here is awful, chalk everywhere canβt be good for the lungs.
Iβll update my review if they fix these issues, but until then, keeping it as is to encourage the owners to do better.
Update: a few days after ownerβs response, there are still no paper towels in the bathroom at 10:30pm. Why is it the responsibility of the gym goers to ask for the paper towels to be restocked? By the time I walk over to the front desk my hands will be half dry anyways, and thereβs just water all over the bathroom floor from people not able to dry their hands. Hereβs an idea - ask every employee to check the bathroom stalls for empty paper towels once an hour. Seems easy enough and should make it less likely for there to be two simultaneously empty dispensers! Still 1 star for me :(
Update: Last few times I went, there has been better availability of paper towels and soap. Bumping up to 3 stars for now.
Update: much better soap and paper towel availability these days. 5 stars!

I did a day pass here today where I did a yoga class, used the gym, and had a brief climbing session. The yoga room is very nice with all the fun accessories to complement the class. The gym area was large with plenty of space. The climbing area was also very large and open with fun routes. Bonus, the bathrooms were also really nice and large. In short, this place is very spacious and will definitely be back.

Pretty good facility with nice equipment and amenities. The actual climbing was just ok, I had a decent time but most climbs I got on were very normal. I don't think they should set crazy experimental climbs but a bit more playfulness and variety would be nice. Maybe they are going for something very approachable, a style that doesn't require a ton of thought on the climber's part. For me, there was no problem really stood out. It would also have been nice to see more V7+ climbs that were not only about how hard you can crimp, especially on vert and slab (incorporating more slopers and balance-dependent climbs).

For climbing, Movement is pretty good. Youβll never run out of boulders to work on, and the route-setting is solid. It has all of the gym and training equipment you need.
Barryβs Power Vinyasa class on Sundays is worth the price of admission on its own. Iβve taken dozens of yoga classes, but it wasnβt until I started going to his that my progression really started to take off. He provides tons of valuable feedback, hands-on adjustments and really cares about your progression all while cracking jokes resulting in a fun, and sometimes painful experience. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to level up their yoga practice from beginners to advanced.

The climbing routes are fun and are updated often enough (if you go to both santa clara and sunnyvale locations, 3x a week, you won't get bored). The staff, bathrooms, and weight areas are passable. Not that clean, but not unusable.
What's nearly impossible to get past is how awful the ventilation system is. I've been coming regularly for over 2-3 years now and it's gotten so stuffy with chalk and BO that my throat and lungs still hurt the next day. I climbed last night for about an hour and my throat is still irritated this morning. The air quality is so bad that my friends only reluctantly go to this location.
On the flip side, climbing vibes and culture are great - friendly and helpful climbers all around!

Like this climbing gym. Does get busy but it is manageable and you can climb routes even if it is crowded. The gym is well equipped. Lock room facilities and good clean and they are kept up pretty well. Good gear shop with someone there to help you and provide advice as needed. Better location than Sunnyvale (no belay here)

Sadly, βannoyingβ has been the best word to describe this gym. Constantly overcrowded, not even weekday mornings can usually offer a respite, you have to wait your turn to climb most routes, with an overeager climber always nipping at your heels.
Lots of pushy, climbing etiquette-free people climbing right next to you, above youβ¦below you, uncontrolled kids running around.
Overall, facilities are OK and routes get changed often-ishβ¦but overpriced, and bad value at the end of the day. 30-day pass costs $140 - for half the price (literally, $75), in Europe, I get 30-day access to a much better gym franchise that even gives you free chalk.
I climb at here when I am in town, simply because thereβs no alternative. Movement is playing the monopoly game pretty well. Really wish there were other options.

Great vibe and great gym overall. There is a large bouldering and fitness area. Even during the time is very busy, they space out the routes enough that most people can easily do one without waiting much. The crowd going to gym are also very cool, I didn't have trouble asking any strangers for some help on a specific route.
My only complain is I wish the ventilation is better. You can smell the chalk and sweat the moment you walk in and this a during winter, I'd imagine the smell will get worse during summer. It definitely can use a better ventilation.

Pretty good bouldering gym.
Ever since I've posted this review, I do feel like there's been a shift in how the problems are difficult. There's more variety in *how* the problems are difficult, which helps my ego, but also gives even more variety in the climbs.
Of course, there are still problems specifically targeting strength as a requirement, but that's just a necessary evil π
It's a big bouldering gym with lots of ample space and a wide variety of problems.
The gym space is not bad, and the locker rooms are solid.
The biggest upside is that this gym specifically has foot showers, which I haven't seen in any other climbing gym(not even the sister branches).

All in all a really good climbing gym. The bouldering area is really big with plenty of space to sit around, even if it gets busy. The problems are well spaced apart so you don't cross often. Difficulty-wise, I found the set medium and quite true to the grade. There is also a big working out area and moonboard area. The two downsides are that it can get pretty busy and that it's expensive (especially if you don't live in the bay area(

The front desk staff was unduly dismissive and downright rude (bordering on being racist compared to how they behaved with a different group that came right after) when we asked if there were options to try out the gym for a few more sessions.
I had a good time, and would have overlooked the lack of hygiene and incompletely stocked bathroom and gotten a membership. I was actually having a decent time climbing until this interaction with the front desk.
It makes a world of difference since each satisfied member can have a multiplicative effect in terms of new member introduction.
Thankfully there are better places around to stay active. My recommendation to folks looking is to stay away from this location for sure. My recommendation to the owner is to sensitive the front desk staff to be more amenable to service. Your business literally depends on it.

Closing at 8 pm on Saturdays and 6 pm on Sundays seems pointlessly early, when weekdays close at 11 pm. Iβm ignorant but I donβt see why this is necessary. Lovely gym, lovely staff!
Only a few minor gripes:
There are no air filters removing chalk to help with the A/C troubles because it goes down every summer (not to mention being easier on the lungs). This is probably a symptom of the huge crowds that find their way into the gym at peak hours, so I guess that canβt be helped. Great facility otherwise :D AC aside, the setting is still awesome and the people are great.
2024 July heat wave update: The AC is functioning. Seems like theyβve worked out whatever the previous issues were. 5* as long as it continues working π Iβd give 6 stars if they were to install/upgrade air filters to deal w the chalky and smelly peak hours. Shoutout again to the staff for being great ppl.

Great gym with a really great variety of problems and friendly staff. Downsides: It gets really busy and sometimes pretty hot. The holds can get pretty greasy because of high volume. Upsides: the setting is really good. There are boulder problems up to v10 or 11 so if you're stronger than that I guess...go outside π€·. Lots of great training areas, full gym that allows chalk. π

UPDATE May 1, 2024: Movement Santa Clara charged my credit card after I asked them to stop charging me. Then, they sent me an email later today stating βI am happy to provide a digital Movement gift card for the $117 value of your May monthly dues.β
DO BETTER. Respect your customers and avoid these scammy marketing tactics.
This boulder gym in santa clara is over priced and not women friendly.
This gym gets extremely hot during the summer. Last year they said they added AC but it was still hot and humid.
This place is too crowded to climb safely. There should be limits on how many people are near the wall.
Gym equipment area is packed and dirty with kids running around unattended to.
Womenβs restroom - there is no steam/sauna roomβ¦
When there is a class going on they make you stop working out and you have to go outside.
At peak hours the air quality is dirty and you can see chalk. The whole place smells bad.
Upper management doesnβt have manners and they donβt know how to solve basic problems, like canceling my membership.
April 29, 2024
They refuse to cancel my membership. I was told I need to physically come into this location in order to cancel. I came in and they now are telling me no one is in the office and I need to send an email to the membership team. When I sent an email, I get an automated message saying they wonβt cancel my membership because itβs the 29th of April. This is absurd. I do not want to pay for May.
The membership fees has gone up to $122 a month. No thank you.
Please cancel my membership.

I've been a member here for a year-and-a-half, and I climb 3-5 times a week on average at a V5-6 level. I've been climbing for almost a decade and visit gyms all over the country when I travel for work. This review is designed for people who climb seriously and are interested in membership. I like this gym, but there are a few things that do not excite me.
Likes:
- Difficult and creative routes. Routes span the breadth from technical-static to pumpy-dynamic and regularly surprise with interesting moves.
- Large space with every variety of wall angle.
- Full weight-training and aerobics area. This area is typically uncrowded but becomes crowded during peak hours.
- Clean locker rooms. I can only speak for the men's locker room, though.
Dislikes:
- Extremely crowded: During peak hours nearly every occupiable walkway is blocked by people. I have to schedule around these times as it becomes difficult to actually climb.
- Confusing culture: The community here continues to confound me. The culture of this gym seems to be very introverted, despite how many people are in the gym at any time. At first I thought it was me, but after visiting other gyms and having very social experiences (as is my expectation at climbing gyms), I feel more confident saying this gym has an antisocial culture. In my experience people who climb here socialize exclusively with those they came with. It's very confusing.
- Route-setting oddities: Particularly in the V4-6 range the rating can be wildly inaccurate as a measure of difficulty. There are many routes featuring dynamic moves that are closer to parkour than climbing. I have heard that some of their climbs are impossible or improbable for folks of smaller statures and I agree with that. I am 6' with a large wingspan and I regularly finish a climb only to wonder how anyone shorter than me would complete it.
- Membership Price: At $117/mo I would expect a bit more; you can attend a high-end gym with a full suite of amenities for that price. I don't feel I'm getting my money's worth despite how regularly I attend, but maybe that's a personal problem. It seems climbing gyms in the area are extremely expensive, but this rate is (to my knowledge) the highest in the south bay.
I am sad to admit this review is ultimately very critical but I think this is a great gym with room for improvement. I'm willing to overlook poor HVAC and faulty lockers (these things could be outside the control of management) but I do think with how much I pay the experience would be a little more premium. I am a member here because it is closest to me and I need to climb to keep myself sane, but if there was a better option I would choose it. Hope this helps you.

I decided to check out Movement Santa Clara to try a new gym in the northern California area, and it's enjoyable. I've been to Movement in Orange, and Santa Clara seems like they have a larger boulder area but a smaller gym section. The ceilings don't go as high, so they do feel slightly cramped inside the bouldering area. The routes range from VB to one v11. The difficulty seems on par with the other gyms in the area. The routes were varied in technique and skill but overall really interesting climbs. This gym also uses Kaya as the climbing app, which helps solo climbers figure out betas or log their sends. There's a kilter, tension, and campus board for training, and all of those areas were pretty empty the few hours I was there. The bathrooms were clean and were equipped with clean towels and showers but no sauna. The front staff was helpful in checking me in and asking whether I needed any type of rentals. The price for a day pass here is 33 dollars, which is a tad more expensive compared to a few other climbing gyms. This location also got very packed in the evening, around seven, when I was there. There's plenty of parking, though, which is a bonus. I'm definitely checking out the Santa Clara Movement in the future when I return to the area.

This is the best bouldering gym in South Bay but sadly it's still a 3 star for me. Mainly because I got spoiled by LA Touchstone gyms and Seattle bouldering gyms.
The variety of routes are pretty good here. I just wish the routes get reset more often. I also appreciate the spacious training area. Unless there is fitness class going on, I never have a problem getting a squat rack.
However, the air ventilation is REALLY bad and it smells pretty bad inside... And especially during crowded hours, you can literally see chalk flying everywhere...

The best climbing gym in South Bay. Itβs much nicer than their Sunnyvale and Belmont location, but not nearly as good as Touchstone gyms in LA and in SF and Oakland.
Good: The staff are nice. The gym is large with training areas and the climbing walls are aesthetically pleasing (unlike Movement Sunnyvale and Belmont).
Bad: The routes donβt get reset often enough. Most of the routes are also not short people friendly. The air ventilation is really bad and it smells pretty bad inside. You can see chalk flying in the air everywhere. (Touchstone gyms have really great ventilation in comparison). The gym is also too crowded. I really want to like this gym, but the management is just terrible. Itβs a popular spot, yet they never fail to run out of supplies in the changing rooms.
Last year around this time the AC broke and now itβs broken yet again, with no timeline to resolution. Iβm going to freeze my membership and Iβm seriously considering to cancel outright.
For $111 per month ($3 higher than last year) I really expected more. If only they had some real competition in the SJ areaβ¦
[update]
The AC seems better, but itβs hardly a consolation given the weather has cooled down. In 2024 the membership will be $117, representing a $6 increase (5.4%). For what youβre getting itβs a hard sell. Touchstone charge much less for nicer facilities.

Facilities are state of the art, lots of options for those who like competition style boulders. As a woman who went in alone, there was maybe one woman for every twenty six foot tall men. The setting reflected the gender demographic in my opinion, many of the climbs were not accessible for shorter women and were strength based. Staff was friendly, I think the gym just needs to better reflect its entire customer base when setting. Some of the boulders bordered on more dangerous than itβs worth with giant dynos over volumes.

I like that thereβs a lot of squat racks. I never have to wait for one to open. I also like that for the most part, people using them understand common lifting etiquette.
Common complaint: the smell here is so strong. This is a newer gym and it smells like youβre walking into an old gym sock. And the AC is supposedly being fixedβ¦for months and months itβs been broken. You can visibly see the chalk floating around in the air throughout the gym. That canβt be good to be breathing inβ¦ also.
Womenβs locker rooms have signs that say to not wear climbing shoes in the bathroom stalls. But thereβs so many women walking in and out of there barefoot and then proceed to walk all over the gym. Their feet are black from dirt.
Also, there were two women FaceTiming within the womenβs locker room. Were they taking a call with a friend? Were they streaming to a social media platform? Not sure. Coming out of the showers feel unsafe.
Management: please make sure the locker rooms feel safe.

No window open, no ventilation, too many people, too much sweat, too much chalk = AC breaks all the time. They need to change windows to openable ones or install chalk filters. The whole gym is greenhouse.
AC is broken again and so much sweating makes it impossible to grip holds, my grade is automatically 1-2 down. Had a really dangerous session with a couple of slips, dizziness and headache from heat. We're going to touchstone gyms during summer.

Not only that, but it seems like their air filters were also broken, the air was extremely chalky and foggy. Canceling my membership for August until they fix this.

Stopped by for a workout. Itβs a large facility with a pretty decent amount of space and enough equipment to jump-pull-lift-slam my way to exhaustion. Daily drop-in is $31. On the high side for weights only. But I donβt imagine many stop through for weights only. Clean & modern. All in all, highly recommend.

Love this gym. Staff are friendly. Workout area is very decent. But 2 years in a row, the A/C always seems broken for a few weeks or couple months. Can't tell if truly broken or if Movement's corporate overlord is trying to save money.
Also, after the price hikes this year, there's never enough soap or paper towels in the bathroom.

Iβm giving this 5 βοΈ because the yoga class taught by Jill is so amazing! (IG: @jillchiuyoga)π§ββοΈJill teaches a foundations/beginner yoga class (Sats at 11am I believe) and her style is so relaxing, simple and not fast paced at all. She makes it a safe place for you to just feel comfortable in your own body and explore it in many of the simple poses/exercises we do. Itβs easy to follow along. Her classes are always full on the weekend so make sure to book in advance! β₯οΈ

I wish I could give negative rating if it allows. The smell inside is very bad. It's hot even with AC on. And the AC is always broken and it takes months to fix. It's way too hot, uncomfortable and crowded in the gym. The holds are significantly more greasy than any other gyms I have been to. Water filter, soap dispenser, and paper towel very often lack replacement / refill. What's worse, the routes are only for dynamic climbers or if you are 6+ft. The idea of the route setters is use an old V0/V1 route, and add one dynamic move, then it becomes a V4, and add two dynamic move, then it becomes a V5. The result is youβll see people get injured and ambulance comes now and then. Really dangerous. The day pass and membership are expensive, not worth the money.

I've been to a few movement locations across the country, Sunnyvale, Crystal City, and Rockville. Out of all of them. This one is by far my favorite. The walls and holds are pretty new and the facility is set up very nicely. The workout area is also very tidy and locker rooms are great! This climbing gym only has bouldering. If you'd like to also top rope/lead climb in this area, I would check out the Sunnyvale location.

Good sized gym with a fair number of climbs in the v3 and under range. I am nursing a minor finger injury so I avoided and crimps and pockets and I was still able to find 42 climbs here v3 and under I could do to get some exercise. Interesting problems in that range, some of the slabs were tricky for that range and they even had some v1s with heavy use of under clings and v2s with heavy use of slopers. So definitely some interesting route setting. Lots of beginners here when I went. So it was somewhat annoying that they didn't know basic climbing etiquette, but the staff tried to kindly remind them. Small shop attached and I was able to get a post climb kombucha. All together a fun experience.

AC fixed now. Ratings are also more inconsistent than other Movement gyms. I climb around v3/4. Some V3s are stupidly hard, and some V4s are flashable. Still, I prefer it to DP Boulders where 70% of the walls are inclines. Good gym overall.

Its 90 degrees outside and even hotter, humid in the inside - yet no AC for the hottest days of the summer... Seriously my local gym that I pay 40 dollars a month for has better maintenance and service but a gym that I pay near 120 a month for cannot even keep its AC on or bother to fix it for months on end.
edit: They finally fixed the AC but they are still lacking in some stuff. Shower stalls with inconsistent waterflow, no soap or lotion or paper towels in the restroom, unimaginative bouldering problems.

I think the best words to describe my view of the gym is it fell very short of its potential. I remember when the gym was built I thought it was disappointing that the walls were very uninspiring. There's no top out wall, the wall paneling is very boring with none of them having interesting characteristics or not being used to its greatest potential. Compare this to the newer gym Pacific Pipe where that gym has everything you can wish for from top out wall, super great roof areas, a wall with a wave like curvature, and more.
Often times the problems are somewhat uninspiring for me as opposed to its Sunnyvale counterpart which I find the problems much more fun to tackle. I think part of this problem stems from how this gym doesn't use volumes that frequently or well. Sometimes they put a blob of volumes in the same place on a single wall which I'd rather call a frankenstein art piece than a climb. Additionally this gym (as a chain) doesn't really buy new or big holds. Competition sized holds would be fantastic to touch but even though they charge each member an exorbitant amount of money they're too cheap to buy any good interesting holds. I see instagram posts of Japanese climbing gyms that frequently buy new holds and they're a fraction of the size of this gym but they have way more psyche than here. I do think that this is a pretty good gym for beginners V5 and under but above that I find the problems don't have too many interesting moves. Part of what motivates me in climbing harder climbs is that they usually have some kind of interesting difficult move but I find that most of them are just "do you have enough finger or shoulder strength to pull through this problem" rather than a combination of cool beta with the prerequisite strengths.
Honestly though the biggest problem for me is the fact that staff doesn't enforce safety and etiquette in the gym when there's an overflow of beginners. It would be really greatly appreciated if staff could tell beginners to not climb a problem when there's a climber on the wall nearby. It really gets on my nerves and I have had 0 sessions where I don't see this happening. I constantly have to tell beginners to get off the wall when someone I see or my friend is doing a problem that intersects the one they were attempting.
Lastly I constantly get disappointed by whoever manages the social media account for the movement gyms. Quite frankly it just feels like they have 0 psyche for climbing. I see dogpatch or long beach rising frequently reshare people's sends on their story, I see other places like hangar 18 orange notify you that there's a fresh new set waiting for you to excite users, and movement does none of that. Their social media rarely posts anything interesting.
Also there's no working AC but at least that can be fixed, though it has been broken for the longest time (a few years) which goes to show how money grabby they are. Pretty disappointing.

Are you:
1) A newer climber looking to learn the basics with your friends in a beginner-friendly environment?
2) Excited about the challenge of physical exertion in an enclosed space that consistently feels 15 degrees hotter and 20% more humid than outside temps, while breathing in the vaporized perspiration of 90 of your climbing compatriots?
3) A non-beginner climber seeking to progress, and looking for no more than a small handful of inspiring climbs in your range to work on at any given time?**
**subtract any climbs on vert walls, as the chances of even approaching the base after wading through crowds are slim at best
4) An avid fan of the Concept of cleanliness, but hate it when you turn on the shower and the water actually falls on you instead of splashing every wall except where the nozzle is pointed?
If any of the above apply, this is the gym for you! The staff are super friendly and helpful; thereβs a good sized training area with a Kilter and a Tension; weight area is spacious and the door there makes you less likely to pass out from heat exhaustion while lifting than climbing; shower heads are state-of-the-art and manage to defy multiple laws of nature to spray down every surface except for the intended ones.
This gym seems like it was constructed as Movementβs response to Dogpatch Boulders, and as long as you donβt think about that comparison and just how astonishingly far it falls from that, itβs not a bad gym!

Really awesome place to get your bouldering itch scratched. Lots of problems and different styles represented. Facility is clean, and welcoming. Ample parking.
Beware that I will get busy and crowded in the afternoon and there will be intro to bouldering classes during the weekday. So be aware that there may be some beginners that don't know bouldering etiquette.
Other than that, it's a great place to get started in bouldering. Everyone I've interacted with, staff and other climbers with has been nice.
