I wish they had a bike rack indoors. About a half of the bouldering routes are not labeled on the v scale. Otherwise a nice gym.

I've been climbing here for about 3-4 years and I love it. Everyone who works there is so nice, and there are so many different classes and resources. They have a really good gym area too. The climbing holds are really well maintained and changed out when they get too greasy, chalky, or old. It is a bit expensive, but it's worth it imo

The membership management here is terrible. I clearly submitted a cancellation request before the deadline, but the fee was still charged the following month. I’ve sent multiple emails and even visited in person several times to request a refund, but I was never able to speak with the person in charge. I will never come back again.

I have been going to Aaron's sunday alpine class and I recommend it highly! He is a passionate and dedicated teacher. This is one of the best classes movement offers. Aaron's classes are so popular they frequently go over capacity and this is a reflection of how much people enjoy his class. He is professional and considerate. Aaron is also one of the few coaches who has also taken injuries and form seriously and has called me out when I was doing pull ups incorrectly and given me advice to get better.
He does like to greet and joke around with people in class and for people who do not know him well, I can see how this may be misinterpreted. I did see the review from another member and I don't want to discount her claims, but I wish movement was able to speak with her to let her voice be heard and mediate and figure out a plan, so that she did not have to write a public review.
Bottom line, many people love Aaron's class and his teaching style and feel safe and comfortable with his approach. I can only speak for myself but his class has changed my life and encouraged me to become more fit and serious about my health.

The indoor and outdoor bouldering sections are awesome, and there are tons of fun as well as challenging routes to either get a work out in, or brush up on your skills. There is a large gym area here as well for you to use before or after climbing (or just as a gym) with all the equipment I could ever need.
Towards the back there is this arch/overhang which has some routes on it and it is super fun! So many good memories on just that section of wall alone, and many more to come!

This 5-star review is for Oscar. He is an incredible fitness instructor and trainer. He’s knowledgeable, motivating, and kind. He’s invested in his students and provides super helpful supervision that’s tailored to whatever level you’re at. I’ve taken a lot of classes with different instructors, but Oscar really goes above and beyond to provide individual feedback on lifting form even when his class is crowded. He’s the best.

What's happening to this gym??? It used to be my fav climbing gym in the whole bay area. And I'm paying membership to support even during lockdown or when I was not able to climb. Recent years I've witnessed the routes have became more and more boring, equipments and facilities getting old and no action was taken despite the feedbacks from members.
And now rude staff, lack of safety concerns, and SEXUAL HARASSMENT??? (You can find about the incident and how the gym delt it on recent Yelp review) Movement company, you should get your service up before you expands aggressively just like your CEO‘s ego. You're ruining it for the whole community.

I witnessed a Movement Gym Sunnyvale Staff Member shouting and yelling from the front desk to a climber on the wall last night, apparently because the climber was climbing too close to the gym's closing time (the gym wasn't actually closed yet, it was still within open hours). :/ The behavior from the staff was completely unacceptable. That's no way to treat your paying members who just want to climb right up until closing and then head out when it's officially closing time. In terms of customer service, and also just basic social decency, what happened last night was totally uncalled for, period. To that Staff member: next time, you could just walk up to the person to tell them if you feel like they're not permitted to climb 5 minutes before the gym closes (although there's no such rule in our Membership Contracts, I've reviewed it!). There's absolutely no need, zero, to yell at someone 20ft across the room in this situation, causing an embarrassing scene for all. Yeah, the other people around (members and other front desk staff alike) got silent when this happened, it was awkward fr. The climber ended up finishing his climb and got out of the gym before closing. If it were me on that wall I would have given the staff member an earful. It's simply no way to treat your customers like that.
What's even more absurd is that I've never seen this gym's staff shout like this when I think they SHOULD be doing so, i.e. safety concerns. E.g. children running directly under climbers, visible to the front desk staff. I've never seen any staff shout at kids who put themselves and other climbers into harms way. So, why does the staff think it's ok to shout at a climber to quit campusing 5 minutes before closing? Every time I've run into safety concerns (unsupervised children in fall zones, parents refusing to follow gym safety rules -- I'm not even talking about etiquette) over my years spent at this place, it was I who had to walk up to the staff, tell them of the concern, and ask them to resolve it. They don't get trained better it seems. (And don't even get me started on this gym’s philosophy that the onus is on the members to ensure a safe gym. If you look at the responses to these reviews, you'll see the Sunnyvale Gym Director repeatedly replying to similar negative reviews saying members should tell gym staff when they see something unsafe happening. Well here's an idea: how about ya train your gym staff and hold them accountable in ensuring safe conditions for all!)
I really wanted to leave 2 stars, for the other staff at this gym who I've met and I feel are super nice and helpful. But what I saw last night was simply too unacceptable to feel right leaving anything other than the most negative rating I could give.
It's really too bad that Movement's the major player in town for the South Bay. If Touchstone Gyms were to open some gyms here, or even just one, in the South Bay, I'd ditch Movement and sign up for Touchstone, faster than it takes a final before-closing send.

This is gonna be complaint regarding an incident that occurred today during a lead check for my friend, which I participated as the lead check partner. Two star is for most of the staff who are friendly and helpful
During this session, one of your staff members revoked my lead permit. The staff member insisted that the “tunneling” belay method was invalid, even after I explained that I learned to lead climb in Europe, where this method is commonly taught and accepted. After that dude made a false accusation, claiming my hands were “always away from the rope", which was a blatantly false observation. It contradicts with the fact that I’ve successfully belayed multiple climbers at your gym, passed others through your belay tests, and caught numerous falls both expected and unexpected without any injury. I would have caused multiple serious accidents through my years of climbing if what dude said was true.
What was most insulting, however, was his response when I asked to retake the test. He casually suggested I come back on Sunday or next Thursday—as if I can easily skip my work just to satisfy the whims of someone playing gatekeeper. My friends also got turned down multiple times when they requested a walk-in test because of "no availability", all while multiple staff chatting and having fun at the front desk doing nothing. This kind of tone-deafness is infuriating, especially when it comes from someone providing a service to paying customers. Would you refund me that one week of membership fee because in reality I cannot fully utilize the gym?
Let me be crystal clear: your staff are not the judges of climbing truth—they are there to ensure safety, not impose rigid dogma or condescend to your community members. There’s a fine line between providing constructive feedback and patronizing your members under the guise of “safety enforcement.” What I experienced today was not guidance; it was micromanagement disguised as expertise.
Furthermore, your entire lead program needs reevaluation. You charge $275 for group lead lessons, yet fail to provide basic support like staff-led lead checks—forcing members to scramble for partners and wait days weeks for a test, while they couldn't practice in real circumstances. And when they finally do get checked with someone they found, they run the risk of losing privileges they paid for because a staff member decides to nitpick their technique. How is that fair? Who would even want to offer help if you all keep doing this?

Movement has been my gym of choice since 2018. Whether it’s to Boulder, top rope, strength training, do yoga, cardio, core fitness, or body building, they have the works! Between all these amenities and the unlimited classes (for members) with top notch instructors, it’s a great bargain! I do miss having a lat pull down setup, but that wouldn’t change my review. Don’t miss clSses with Tinh, Oscar, and Doris if you’re here!

Movement is a great rock climbing gym with plenty of bouldering, top roping, and a well equipped weight section. They also have a yoga room, classes, and a sauna in the locker rooms. Offering introductory classes and monthly events, it's a great way to get introduced to climbing if you're new or challenge yourself on their hard routes if you're experienced.
It's a friendly environment, safe, and welcoming to well behaved teens.
They offer great lead-climbing classes, which I'd totally recommend.

Incredibly friendly and helpful staff, some super sick routes and great workout equipment. It’s just way too crowded:( I was constantly waiting my turn to get on the wall and then once I was up there someone would climb a problem right next to me lacking any regard to my presence. There were children running around without supervision and overall the atmosphere was loud and disruptive. I definitely prefer a more peaceful bouldering environment so unfortunately won’t be going back.

Great location for indoor climbing — bouldering and top rope. No prior experience needed to come in and start. We started by taking their single day pass (and equipment rental) a few times, and liked it enough to take the monthly membership and come regularly. We like their free classes from time to time, and they also regularly change the climbing walls… so always new challenges.

Though the gym and the walls looked very nice I was highly disappointed of lack of belay partner options since they don’t have autos. I waited and in-spite of announcing not a single person was open to belay - including the staff. In the gym I normally go to this has never been a problem and in a pinch a staff member would step in to belay people on a route or two.

The amount of kids running around constantly and unsupervised makes the climbing session UNBEARABLE and incredibly DANGEROUS! This is not a playground, we pay more than $100 a month to have access to this facility, they keep increasing the price and it keeps getting worse.

Sadly, the quality of the setting became bad since Planet Granite changed to Movement. I heard experienced setters left to Mosaic, benchmark, touchstone etc, when the management changed(probably wage issue). Movement hired new 'apprentice' setters with little experience(who's eager to learn with lower wage whatever) and started teaching them. I've been patiently waiting for them to get better, but recent settings are really disappointing. They seem to care more about making Instagram reels than actually setting better.
1. The problem is all the setters are fairly new, and only a few climb higher than v7. They don't seem to understand how the body movement supposed to be for a good climber, therefore set a lot of awkward problems. It is good enough for beginners and I do enjoy some creative problems, but the entire wall of experimental problems is too much. I often see very awkward problems that make everyone break intended beta, or even injury prone.
2. The other type is too dull settings, simple juggy crimps ladder. I heard many strong climbers complaining about it. Bay area is the main indoor climbing area close to Yosemite, where modern US climbing history started. I can’t believe gyms here don't accommodate hard climbers. In result, people stop climbing or go other gyms and outdoors because they can't find interesting problems over v4-5. I'm thinking to change to Touchstone when they open a new gym in Redwood City next year. Touchstone gyms setting has been constantly better.
3. They set the same style on the same wall over and over, even with the same holds.... especially for bouldering, they seem to designate certain walls as 'dyno wall' or 'mantle wall' etc, and set only those styles on that wall. It's good to practice the same style over and over, but imagine you were excited for a new set because you climbed everything else, then only finding it's all the same style. On top of that, they are similar to what's been there before.
These comments are mainly for bouldering, but I find similar situations with rope climbing. Santa clara, belmont gyms are not that different experience either. I really wish they hire more seasoned setters to overlook everything, with proper wage. Movement increased membership fee 3 times last year or so, but they don't seem to pay enough to the setters.
Old review;
It's VERY crowded after 6 pm. People get too close to the wall, almost falling on each other. Need sign or announcement to stay 5' away from the wall!! Seriously, they need to open another gym in South Bay...
Edit: After I complained here, some employees started telling people to get away from the wall. Also they're opening a new gym in Mountain View. I appreciate their feedback.

I've been a member for about two years, while I really enjoy the yoga classes, the equipment and workout area, the routes here, and the staff are always super friendly and helpful, I definitely see a decline of quality since the new owner took over. New routes are not set as often, broken mat/flooring are not replaced, broken toilet for weeks, empty soap dispenser and paper towels. They increase the membership fee every year, I wonder where they are spending the money. Paying over $100 a month, I would expect something better. Hope some day we'll have more options in south bay.

This is one of the largest climbing gyms in the bay area, so it has one of the largest variety of climbing routes and bouldering projects. They usually have a pretty good variety of grades as well. All the Movement gyms have the older style wall texture (before Walltopia became ubiquitous) which I actually prefer bc it looks and feels slightly more like real rock - especially on the crack climbs. This Sunnyvale gym also has a pretty good variety of crack routes. The fitness area is probably the largest I have seen in any climbing gym with a huge variety of equipment. During peak hours this place can get quite busy, so it's best to go on weekday mornings if possible.

They purposefully fail people on their lead checks. I have never met a climber who passed their lead check on their first try here and proved it to myself when I took a seasoned lead climbing friend from Ohio who's climbed across the country to take the test here and they failed him for 'not using the best clip'. Not sure why these guys want to gatekeep lead climbing but bay area climbers only suffer from it.

UPDATE 2023: The staff is amazing, 5 stars, so it's unfortunate that Movement the corporation does not care about you, the regularly paying member in their Bay Area gyms. While Touchstone continues to invest back to our community year over year, Movement simply lets their facilities rot because there is easier money to be made elsewhere. You don't need to be climbing here for a while to see the decline, and you are trapped into paying more and more while getting less and less because options are limited in the South Bay. Looking forward to some shakeup in a few years
Been climbing here for over 10 years and it's pretty disappointing to see the decline in the quality, diversity and density of lead routes being set here, often impossible to get on any lead route during peak hours, membership fee is higher compared to SF and Belmont despite this facility is always over capacity, half the stuff you can't climb because they are obviously tailored for the climbing team, no response to feedback, zero communication during gym closure due to comps. The list goes on...
I don't see how Movement/PG is 'building' any community that they claim to be. If your goal is to climb stronger outside, better off ditching the membership, get a hangboard and train at home. And if you want to climb cracks, the ones at pac pipe is significantly better.

I love this gym, but the management of children at this gym is trash. Literal strollers and pack n plays on the mats. That's unacceptable. This is not a free for all playground, and I'm super sick of kids running into people belaying and running underneath boulderers. It seems like nothing will change until a kid or adult climber gets seriously hurt and that's not great. They need to be stricter about parents watching their kids and what is acceptable in an area with risks like climbing.

The staffs at this gym don’t seem to care about members’ safety at all. There are so many kids running around the bouldering area with ignorant parents and they do nothing to stop them. I saw two incidents happened as climbers falling on kids within 10mins. Very unfortunately, I didn’t see any staff went check on the kids or the climbers.

Unsupervised kids run everywhere on the mat. No one provided instructions on climbing safety guidelines to those parents & kids. The climber almost fell on kids, apparently their parents had no idea about bouldering and kept saying "it's just a playground for everyone". Tried to ask help from the frontdesk staffs and got no response until the climber and the parents arguing with each other for a while and making noises in the gym. And I even noticed it happens a lot...We paied so much for the memberships and the gym cannot even take the safety serious? CAN YOU STOP KIDS FROM KIDDING ON THE MATS? PLEASE be more SERIOUS on those potential accidents. SAFETY is the NO 1 PRIORITY!!!

Been coming to this gym for a while now and as much as I love this place, lately it gets too crowded with unsupervised kids.
This can get very dangerous and inconvenient. This is a huge safety concern with kids running around without their parents or staff overseeing and monitoring it.
Would love for the staff to be more vigilant of this and parents accompanying children be more mindful, understand that this is not a kids playground but a climbing gym where safety is of huge importance.
We pay a significant amount for the membership and this seems a bit unfair.

This is a cool gym. You can tell it's older, and on a winter evening, it's dark, cold, and grungy -- but I loved the setting here. The front staff is very friendly. I just bouldered, but the problems were all interesting, even the V0s. It's also worth noting that this gym has some of the stiffest gym grades I've ever experienced. There are V2s here which are not a walk in the park.

The facility that Planet Granite has left behind is beautiful. Sadly, one huge thing I have noticed since we lost PG is the lack of safety staff at Movement. I could go on about how things have changed, but if there is one thing Movement desperately needs to reconsider, it is staffing more people for safety purposes. And on that note, encouraging the current staff to get out from behind that counter... not just when running towels.

I can't express enough gratitude for the exceptional experience my severely autistic friend and I had at Movement Climbing Gym. From the moment we walked through the doors, it was evident that this gym is dedicated to providing a top-notch climbing experience and committed to inclusivity and understanding. The staff at Movement Climbing Gym deserves special commendation for their remarkable patience, empathy, and expertise in working with individuals with unique needs. They went above and beyond to create a welcoming environment for my friend, ensuring that every aspect of the gym was accessible and accommodating. The gym's instructors' personalized attention and support were outstanding. They took the time to understand my differently-abled friend's specific challenges and tailored their guidance to make the climbing experience enjoyable and fulfilling. Their compassionate approach and positive reinforcement were instrumental in building my friend's confidence and making the entire experience successful. The facility is well-maintained, featuring various climbing walls suitable for all skill levels. The emphasis on safety measures and cleanliness is apparent throughout, adding to the overall sense of professionalism and care. What sets Movement Climbing Gym apart is its commitment to fostering a community that embraces diversity. The inclusive atmosphere encourages individuals of all abilities to engage in the joy of climbing, creating a space where everyone feels supported and celebrated. Movement Climbing Gym exceeded my expectations in every aspect. Their dedication to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for individuals with special needs is truly commendable. I wholeheartedly recommend this gym to anyone seeking a positive and empowering climbing experience, especially those with unique challenges. Can be fun for beginners but Overpriced gym with probably worst sets especially rope. They rarely update routes now. I used to love coming here (was a member for 5 years) and had to stop because setting quality gets worse every time. Not consistent grading, and only change one section of the wall per month for rope.. every time I tried other gym, I realized how it used to be fun to climb. Unfortunately there is no competitor gym in South Bay that’s the reason people keep their membership here.. it’s shame because the gym itself is great and I love to keep climbing. A front desk guy with glasses was super rude and discriminative last night (the date is 07/27)! He walked straight from the front desk to me and my friend, and reminded us there are only 5 minutes left, urged us to leave before the gym closes, while we sit in the boulder area waiting to try our problems one last time. His behavior is so unfriendly and discriminative and made us so uncomfortable. I have been climbing in movement gyms for about 2 years. Movement should train their staff not to discriminate people at least.
EDIT: thank you for replying to me. I totally understand that people stay overtime, but that is not our case. Please tell them (1) only tell people to leave after the gym is closed. We have the right to stay until 11PM. (2) If you want to ask people to leave, ask everyone in the gym instead of choosing some people to talk to.

I had to make a review after interacting with the great staff at this movement location. I got a membership this summer and brought my sisters to climb with me for the first time. The front desk worker, Hakeem, made everyone feel so welcomed and we had the best time. On other days I’ve came in he’ll ask me how I’m doing and is so friendly! 10/10

Terrible Experience with Disruptive Staff Member!
I have been a member of this gym for over 11 years, and I have always enjoyed my time here. However, my recent experiences with a particular staff member have left me extremely disappointed and uncomfortable.
This staff member, whose name I would rather not mention, has repeatedly interrupted and annoyed me during my workouts. Not only did he interrupt me, but he also showed a complete lack of respect for my personal space and boundaries. I have witnessed him doing the same to other members as well, which is completely unacceptable and unnecessarily.
Last year, I took the initiative to bring this issue to the attention of the previous supervisor, hoping for some resolution. However, despite my complaint, it appears that no action was taken against this staff member. I find it disheartening and concerning that the gym management failed to address this ongoing problem, especially considering my long-standing membership and loyalty.
As a paying customer, I believe that I should be able to exercise in a safe and comfortable environment without being constantly bothered and interrupted. Unfortunately, this staff member's behavior has made my gym experience significantly unpleasant, to the point where I am considering canceling my membership.
It is crucial for the management of this gym to take immediate action and address this recurring issue. Ignoring the problem only serves to perpetuate an uncomfortable atmosphere for members like myself. I hope that future members will not have to endure the same level of discomfort and frustration that I have experienced.
In conclusion, my overall experience with this gym has been tarnished by the disruptive behavior of this particular staff member. Until the management demonstrates a genuine commitment to addressing this issue and ensuring a respectful and enjoyable environment for all members, I cannot recommend this gym to others anymore.

I haven’t visited here since it was called planet Granite. I like the variety of bouldering and top roping climbing walls. The workout gear is also good and they have a few treadmills. The bathrooms are clean too, so overall a great place. The only thing is bring a jacket because it can be windy and cold if it’s in the 50s or below outside.

One of the worst gyms I've been to actually. Super expensive, only old small holds which are slippy as hell. Maybe some people like that and if it's a couple of boulders like that fine but not all of them and not for this price mark.

Gym is really large with 2 boulder areas. The top rope and lead sections have great diversity in grades and a good variety for lead climbers which was exciting! There were some really tall walls and some shorter walls, so it was good for all people. The actual gym area was one of the largest I've seen at any climbing gym and really well equipped. The things I'm not a fan of are more so issues that I have with all movement gyms- there are GrirGris attached to all the top ropes, not all of them are smooth for belaying. Also you have to schedule a lead test way in advance, so if you're just visiting occasionally it's hard to be able to lead. This gym has a few area in ropes and the front boulder pit where there was a lack of lighting and it was really dark midday. Otherwise great experience first time!

I have been a member for a few months now and I have been constantly disappointed how overcrowded this gym is. I honestly believe the gym should enforce a capacity limit. People walk under the climbing rope or bump into the belayer is a safety concern.
As mentioned in other reviews, children run wild here. I understand this is the responsibility of the parents, but parents should be held accountable. This is a space for all climbers regardless of age, everyone should be respectful & mindful of others. I give 5 stars to the friendly and welcoming staff. The restrooms, showers, and sauna are clean. The towels are often stocked as well. The routes and grading are great. Your best chances for a great climb are weekday mornings and Saturday & Sunday evenings. Overall, be aware that this is crowded gym and patience is needed.

I like this gym a lot! Has a lot of rope climbing & bouldering. It gets very crowded right after working hours. If you're looking to climb a lot, come later or earlier. If you're looking to chat and socialize, come during peak hours! Lots of friendly people in the climbing community to strike up a convo with.
Though some of the holds are worn out, I really like the routesetting. Even the beginner problems like V0-V3 have you learning things like toe/heel hooks, overhangs.

Movement (formally Planet Granite) is one of the best climbing gym franchises, and this is probably their best location. They offer everything for top rope and bouldering, with lots of heady lead climbing walls too. They have the standard two part belay test for top rope first, then lead climbing. Tallest wall gets over 40ft. The setters are great. They do leave grigris on the toprope ropes, but bring your own rope and belay device for leading.

A very well equipped climbing gym in the Sunnyvale area. Their top rope section is much larger actually has a great distribution of grades. Their rope climbing grades are extremely lenient: for ex. A 5.10c here is most likely a 5.9 in other gyms
Surprisingly, their workout area is also pretty big. Getting a membership here is going to fulfill most of your fitness needs.
Avoid peak hours if possible as it gets crowded and you ll have to wait in line for getting on the wall

Make sure to bring your own towel during peak hours or be forced to dry your self with your own clothes. Don’t expect them to answer the phone either to help you out. I’m not that mad any more, but the uncomfortable inside out wet drive home sucked and deserves a review. It’s an okay gym in the morning though.
Dear Reader,
Originally I put a 1 star because of the bad experience today, but that’s not that fair and let’s not start out this year with that energy. The setting is pretty good and the roped area is pretty cool too. At least they have a sauna and the staff looked super stressed out today. It looked like maybe two staff members for like 100 climbers. Good job! Hire more staff or something.
Sincerely,
Man in Wet Chonies

I would not recommend this gym for bouldering, unless there's no other option.
The top rope and lead areas looked good. The shop was good. I loved the garage door open to let air in even in December! That was a nice surprise.
The training area is amazing. They must have half the gym dedicated to weights and machines.
Bathrooms are clean. Drinks and snacks are available.
The bouldering, though, did not meet my expectations. Experience for the price of their day pass.
The routes are not very well marked. Many of the holds are really worn out. There didn't seem to be that much wall for bouldering to begin with. I mistakingly thought the pics on the website were at the Sunnyvale location but they did not have near the space I thought they would.
We were just passing through, so we had fun but it could have much better bouldering.

This gym is solid. Lots of bouldering and top rope. My only complaint: The holds are a bit old and it can be hard to tell if a hold is yellow or white. They could stand to update their holds or at least the whites/yellow holds. Other than that - staff was really nice, gym was pretty clean, and the bouldering problems were fun

This is/was my main gym and have been going here for 2 years or so. Definitely would have been a solid 4.5/5 stars before but now is a 3/3.5 star gym. This is the best climbing gym in the area but it is definitely getting overcrowded. Can be hard to find available climbs and weights weekdays after work. Be cautious of getting sick here as well, I have come down with something on more than one occasion after climbing. The price has also increased for ~$80 or so to $100/month.
Their Santa Clara location is hopefully on track and will help with the overcrowding. They should stop taking new members and focus on their current clientele.
UPDATE: 1/7 @ 7:34pm they were completely out of towels. Extremely lame especially with the membership costing $100/month.

This is the absolute worst climbing gym i've been to. Stopped in for a day pass on a trip passing by this town and the building was freezing cold and dimly lit. I don't think they have any AC/heating. I had to climb in a winter coat. Even all the staff was bundled up. The atmosphere was unpleasant and the staff seemed unenthused to be there. I only bouldered on this visit but the holds were filthy and greasy. Some starting foot holds were literally useless because your foot slides right off of them. Do they know youre supposed to wash holds here? Would never return.

If you are a new or unexperienced climber, you will have a great time! The customer service was exceptional and you will find plenty of fun routes that will challenge you to stave off pump.
Otherwise, you will be kicking yourself for spending 30 dollars! The walls and holds are from the early 2000s and make you wonder where the day pass money is going. As a result, the setting at higher grades falter. Everything at 5.12 or above can be characterized as big moves and 'feet follow hands'. Maybe if the gym invested in newer holds or just more dedicated footholds, they could have technical cruxes that require patrons to think more critically about body positioning and movement. Or if they bought new walls (which help avoid smearing to work around bad feet) they could at least justify the pricey day pass.
I know I sound like a grumpy old troll leaving a bad review, but I genuinely think that the gym should rethink the price of their day passes or update their facilities.

Really frustrating experience at this gym. Second day I've come in only to be told that there is no one here to give lead tests. I come in and pay good money to train and can't even get a basic lead test done. I was also assured that there would be someone here to test today so rearranged my schedule to be here midday on a monday. I've been in gyms all around the country and I've never not been able to get a same day lead test so that I can climb. Waste of my time and money.

I really want to love or even like this climbing gym. The people that work there are wonderful and so are many of the fellow climbers I've met at MSVL/PGSV equally great. However, there are some massive issues:
1. gym cleanliness - the gym area is tremendously filthy, do lunges or any movement during which you come into even brief contact with the floor, and end up streaked or caked with dirt. Paper towels, hand sanitizer, cleaner bottles are constantly empty, so even self-cleaning your workout area is difficult.
2. route setting - no issues at all with the routes or route-setting, as there is an interesting diversity in the climbing routes, styles, and level of difficulty in the routes. There are some massively fun climbs to be had each week. The lack of ratings given to the climbs, however, leaves something to be desired. It feels a little smarmy and gatekeeper-y. Not everyone is a super experienced climber and one should somewhat understand what to expect when attempting a climb. ESPECIALLY on lead/sport climbs. Even providing an estimate/ballpark rating would be better than nothing.
3. Comparison to other ET/Movement/El Cap gyms - I'm sorry, this gym would have been fine 10 or even 5 years ago; however, moving from the east coast I'm super disappointed that I pay more for a smaller, outdated, and more crowded climbing experience than I was able to get for $20-$30 less per month at east cost climbing gyms in the same corporate family. My recent combined climbing experiences and seeing the investments that El Cap is making in other areas instead (DC area/ Chicago/ Dallas) with no new investments planned in the Bay Area have me eyeing up the Touchstone gyms.
In an area where climbing is super popular and more accessible to the masses, having bigger and more updated climbing options for training seems an obvious business case. From what I understand, El Cap uses the Sunnyvale gym for case studies in their internal corporate efforts (not surprising given that it has some of the highest daily check-ins of all gyms since the merger), it seems like this area supports some more investment given the crowds and somewhat outdated nature of this gym.

When I first visited this gym years ago back when it was still PG, I thought it was the best rope gym in the bay.
A lot of things that make it great are still there: interesting walls, long lead routes, multiple separate bouldering sections, huge training area, full gym, friendly staff, cool atmosphere, and of course, a sauna that is almost always empty, which in my biased opinion adds a full star to my review of any gym. Also, it’s breezy‿︵‿︵‿︵!! Like any other modern climber worth their weight in excuses, I am only capable of sending when temps are between 55 and 65 Fahrenheit, with windchill from the northwest causing a slight updraft.
What has changed: setting feels less inventive (the gym in the Presidio seems to have the best setters now), walls and holds are no longer the latest and greatest available if that’s important to you.
I’ll still be coming here regularly to train and climb and work out, and hang out by myself in the sauna. Come say hi, it gets lonely in there.

Great facility that offers both bouldering and top rope/lead. Can get very hot in the summer without AC.Their sunnyvale location is the best among the other gyms in terms of air circulation.
My main issue is with the crowdedness. The gyms seems to be busy ALL THE TIME. Health hazard aside, it's simply hard to find the right moment to jump on a boulder problem or not interrupted by another person on the wall. The holds are well overdue for washing. I know that this is not necessarily an easy issue to solve, but perhaps the gym can consider extending hours on weekends.

THE STAFF IS AWESOME!!! My 17 year old daughter had a personal training appointment with Dillon. Long story short, she felt faint and was quite frightened. (NOTE: It was not due to the exercises...we had just returned from Yosemite and we think she had some dehydration going on). The Movement team saw that she was not well and contacted EMS, and then contacted me. I was a little frantic when I got the call as I was stuck in traffic in Morgan Hill, and they told me not to worry and called my husband immediately. Upon reflecting on the situation, my husband and I feel overwhelmed with gratitude. The Movement team handled it AMAZING! My heart is full thinking of the care she received at that time. I can't thank you all enough.

It would be alot higher of a rating if they would dedicate a section of their walls to autobelays. I am an introvert who goes to the gym to train endurance and I loves to put some headphones on, up climb and down climb routes. This way I can get in the zone, practice my cardio and be prepared with my down climbing outdoors. This gym is consistently trying to partner me with someone when asked about them, which feels like toxic positivity. Some people rather not interact with others and go into a gym to get a multipitch work out in. you should be accepting of that and invest a little bit of money on some autobelays for those who struggle with social anxieties.
