MYO Lab is an airy, beautiful space next to Lake Merritt in Oakland. The space itself is stunning—airy, calm, beautifully designed, high ceilings, natural light, all of it.
I was fairly new to training and have learned so much from Matthew already. We've done a deep-dive on fundamentals that were never covered in my years going to classes, playing sports, doing dance intensives, and working out on my own.
There are trainers with a range of styles who work out of the space, so if you're in the market for something specific I'd highly recommend contacting MYO Lab.

The space
The gym is beautiful, clean, and has great equipment. The high ceilings, natural light, and architectural details create a calm atmosphere. You don't feel crowded or overstimulated.
Personal Training
Matthew is a pleasure to train with. He listens and tailors each workout to you. I was looking for a trainer that would teach me how to safely lift weights on my own. I want to build muscle and get more definition.
He watches you move through each exercise providing encouragement, praise, and feedback. He's been helping me identify what and where I should be feeling each exercise. I get a challenging workout and learn a lot. I'm sore after every session without feeling totally wrecked for days.

I've had the pleasure of working with Matthew Hearn for the last couple months. I'm learning a lot about the importance of digging deep into full range of motion with proper form to keep me safe. It allows me to get a lot out of a workout without having to go too heavy, which I really appreciate as someone who older and fit but not "big". Matthew is able to explain the elements of motion in a beautiful way that I can take home to though the rest of the week. The Gym is a great space too, plenty of new equipment, well maintained.

I've been training with Jordan Smith for the past few months after a hiatus from lifting. Jordan is an incredible trainer and I'm making steady progress with all my lifts.
The space is modern, clean, well-lit with natural light, and organized. There's always parking on-site which makes it hassle-free and they have an InBody machine for body comp. It's so nice to train in an environment that's both pleasant and functional.

I recently started training at MYO Lab, and I couldn’t be happier with my experience. The space is absolutely beautiful and stocked with brand-new, state-of-the-art machines that make workouts feel fresh and motivating.
I’ve been working with Matthew, the business owner, for just a month, and it’s been amazing so far. He’s incredibly positive and encouraging, meeting me where I’m at and pushing me in the best way possible. Matthew emphasizes proper technique, which has completely transformed how I approach my workouts. I’ve been feeling muscles I never activated before (pandemic Apple Fitness workouts could never!), and the results speak for themselves—I’ve already lost 10 pounds and feel so much more energized and confident.

Myo Lab is a beautiful space to work out in. It's spacious, clean, bright, and well-maintained. I really appreciate the abundance of squat racks, the turf area, the excellent sound system, and the open studios upstairs. The atmosphere is welcoming, and everyone is friendly and kind. My wife and I have been training here with Jordan Smith for the past few months, and I can't say enough great things about this location.
The gym is an absolutely beautiful building with a craftsman wood roof. Truly no gym has any right to look so good.

MYO lab is an incredibly beautiful space that is full of natural light and more than enough platforms for training. They also have new training equipment technology that I’ve never seen before, making each platform a one stop shop to work out all muscle groups and removing the burden to have to move around to different stations. I’m also used to stuffy gyms but MYO has lots of space and extra high ceilings.
I trained with Matt after a very big injury from lifting with awful form for many years. Not only does Matt have incredible knowledge about building and utilizing specific muscle groups for a holistically healthy fitness plan, but he makes it so easily digestible. His coaching style is clear and he ensures you fully understand the impact of your movements. After working with Matt, I was able to get to my ultimate heavy weight squat goals and also start tackling strengthening of my core / upper body (something I historically avoided). He taught me about the anatomy of muscles and how each one impacts the other. I’m stronger than ever and I’ve been able to maintain consistency with no injury and become much stronger.
If you’re looking for a beautiful place to train with very capable and kind people, look no further than MYO Lab.

This is a gorgeous space! I currently take an Extreme Hip Hop step class at this gym with Monica Joy every Wednesday & Saturday and absolutely love it! The space is brand new and there’s parking. What else could you ask for? Once the gym officially opens in November, I plan on talking to the owner, Matthew, about signing up for a membership/personal training. You can tell from the gym alone that Matthew is passionate and dedicated about the gym space and helping the community come together in our journey to health and fitness whether you are a beginner or advanced. Love this gym, the instructors, and highly recommend!

I transferred to this gym when my fabulous personal trainer (Melanie Hockett) moved her clients to MYO Lab. The gym has all brand new equipment, beautiful high ceilings and windows which allow for lots of natural light. I’ve been going to MYO Lab since day 1. They’ve got an amazing space with the best trainers. Matt Hearn even helped me recover from a pretty serious disc herniation that made everything including walking super painful. Now I’m deadlifting and squatting better than I did before I got the injury!
The training area is state of the art with tons of brand new equipment. I focus mainly on weightlifting but it has everything for cardio and group classes.
On top of all that, it’s in this beautiful historic building. Tons of natural light and air keeps me feeling energized. I can’t rave about it enough.

I never realized the difference a personal trainer could make until I started working with Matt. Matt is beyond good, he's world-class.
It wasn't his knowledge that impressed me the most (Matt is a walking fitness encyclopedia), but his approach. A highly customized program was structured around my specific goals, busy schedule, and budget considerations. Came to matthew with sciatic nerve issues. Matthew stressed the importance of core exercises. We strengthen my lower back with isolated exercises, and to my surprise, I no longer suffer numbness or tingling of the feet. I reached out to Mathew Hearn in January of 2023 and have been working with him for exactly 1 .5 years. He is fantastic to work with, both as a trainer and as a human being. My initial goal was to develop the strength and fitness needed to easily move through tasks in my day to day life. I was tired of struggling up the stairs to my apartment with groceries each week and wanted to enter my 30’s getting into the best shape of my life. In just a year I’ve exceeded what I thought was possible for my weight lifting development. Not only can I now easily carry 5 bags of groceries up multiple flights of stairs in one go, I’ve actually grown to like working out (yes, I am one of those people now) and I attribute so much of this to Mathew’s patient and intuitive approach.
Mathew’s approach is all about mindfulness and this has been transformational as someone who has not had the strongest mind-body connection in the past. I actually can now feel when different muscles are working, at rest, energized or tired. You may be thinking—couldn’t you do that already as a human being existing in a body? And the truth is, sure, but not to the level of attunement I have now. I’m not only stronger, I’m more in touch with my daily physical movements and thus, better able to grow the self care habits I know will lead to greater health outcomes in the long run. This has given me more power and confidence to move through life, both physically and mentally.

I have been working with Matt for a few months now. In the past I had worked out at home with no guidance. I had developed some bad techniques and had to break some bad habits. Matt taught me the proper forms / techniques needed for our workouts and he is definitely the guy you want to help get your shit straightened out. He also taught me how to connect my mind to muscle movement to make the most effective reps. He developed a diet specific to me which helped me put on 6 lbs of muscle in only a few months. I’ve been training with Matt Hearn, the owner, for four years now. My results are phenomenal. I’ve put on 15 lbs of lean muscle and developed an incredible connection with some of the toughest muscle groups on my body.
Three things really set Matt’s approach apart …
1. *High integrity focus on your goals.* The median trainer at other gyms will forget your goals, plan the workout last minute, and be on their phone during the workout. Matt is different; he’s an incredible listener, and he does prep work before and after every session to make sure you’re hitting your personal goals. It’s almost terrifying how accountable he makes you. During the session he is 110% laser-focused on you personally, reminding you how micro achievements will connect to your high-level goals.
2. *PhD level muscle connection.* Matt forces you to develop a deep mind-muscle connection when you lift. He does not accept low-quality reps. He taps the target muscle, he adjusts form, he tweaks the weight setup … he’s obsessive about finding 100% muscle activation. This is the elite level of coaching you need to make your goals come true.
3. *Validates with data.* Matt has an array of tools he uses to measure your work output. I found it really helpful to validate my internal feelings (this feels like a good pump) against hard data (I’ve recruited 90% of my pec muscles over 8 reps).
