Napa Tenacious Fitness was founded by Sean McCawley and is the Napa Valley’s premier private Personal Training studio for individuals seeking 1-on-1 Personal Training and coaching. I began my training with Napa Tenacious about 3 months ago. I am a 70 year old man with a number of issues and in great need of strength training. I met with the owner, Sean, before starting and reviewed everything I was trying to accomplish. He listened and talked thoughtfully about the process and what I could expect.

I have now been at it for 3 months and Coach Paul has been fabulous, ready to listen and make sure I was onboard for every step of the way. I am feeling much stronger and a bit more in control of by fitness after my initial work with him and very much appreciate his measured approach to my fitness journey.

I am excited to continue these efforts going forward and know that I can trust Sean and Paul to keep me on a positive path. Bravo Tenacious, I am one appreciate client!

Tenacious Fitness is fantastic. I decided to sign-up for 3 months after I saw my husband make great strides towards his fitness goals. My goals were pretty simple: to build strength and mobility. I had lost much of my strength due to a prior health problem and had injured both my knees. We started slow and after 6 months, I am much stronger and can tackle the stairs like a pro! They are worth every penny, and I am so grateful to Sean and my trainer Alac.

I need to start by saying that I am not a gym person and never have been, but after turning 60 I could feel that my body was not keeping up with my interests in staying fit. I gave Napa Tenacious a try 2 1/2 years ago and I could not be happier! I work one on one with Darwin and I get so much benefit out of my sessions. Not only do they make being there fun, I am getting noticeably more fit. I have lower back muscles that I never had before. My back no longer tightens up unexpectedly, and I have gotten stronger and have better balance. All very important things as we age. They customize my workout to me to accommodate my issues, but everything is feeling better. Believe it or not but I actually like going to the gym now!

Working with Napa Tenacious Fitness is the best thing I’ve done for myself in a long time. I needed to get back into an exercise routine to improve balance, flexibility, and strength. Paul A’s individualized coaching took into consideration my knee injury and helped me build strength and flexibility. Paul is an excellent instructor. NTF is an awesome place to get personalized fitness training. The staff members work closely together with each other and their clients to create a great workout environment. Each coach is well-trained to provide a full, customized workout plan specific to each person and their needs. While I am not a professional athlete by any means, the activities I'm involved with include cycling and outrigger canoe racing. Coach Paul provides workouts that build up my flexibility and strength to help increase strength, build skills, help prevent injury, and increase my overall health. His knowledge and guidance through proper use of the equipment as well as through all exercise reps and routines are a great asset to anyone's fitness plan!

Tenacious fitness has changed my life! After the pandemic I could not get motivated to get back into the gym. As an avid tennis player, I saw my game go downhill from lack of cross training. I took the plunge and signed on to do one on one training at Tenacious. My two coaches Alec and Paul have made a huge difference in my strength, balance and stamina. They've created workouts that are engaging and challenging but are also mindful of knee issues I have. If I have any kind of pain in a certain exercise they quickly pivot to a different approach to work the same muscle without aggravating whatever is cranky at the moment. I've not had one pulled muscle or strain even with the increased weight or reps. My tennis game is off the charts now and I can say it's because my core, legs, chest arms and back are stronger. The community they've created there is welcoming and since we all work individually with our coaches I don't feel the urge to "compete" with the person next to me because they are working on something completely different. My coaches give me enough encouragement to get me through the exercises and finish the reps. I highly recommend Tenacious if you are looking to get in shape and get stronger without beating your body up.

I have always considered myself a person that likes to be active! However when COVID started, I, like many others, stopped their normal fitness routine. I can honestly say that I gained a lot of weight and I wasn't quite happy with where my fitness level was. Also, I was struggling with injuries and pain that killed my motivation to work out. I joined Napa Tenacious fitness in October 2024 and I have gained so much confidence in my body! First, the workouts are tailored to your goals and your fitness level. You get a good workout, but you are not doing things that are above your current fitness level. The coaches are personable and they listen to you! I always felt heard by the coaches! Also, they worked with me to push me to the next level and I have grown in strength and endurance. I feel myself toning up, losing weight, and all of my injuries are gone! The resistant training and the warmups prepare your body to workout and help prevent injury! My back pain has completely gone away and I have not had it since November! I recommend everyone get personal training here! I have had the most empowering and uplifting experience and it has truly changed my life, the way i think about fitness, and my confidence! As “a woman of a certain age” 😉 I was intimidated by the thought of personal training, but I knew I needed the accountability of a commitment. I am so glad I took them up on the 2 free workouts because now I’m hooked. I have worked out with each of the trainers and they are all extremely well trained, kind, encouraging, professional and personable. I’ve been active most of my life with sports and working out in some regard. However, as my career became more serious in my late 20s, fitness started to fall to the wayside—even though I kept gym memberships. I was looking for a way to jumpstart my fitness and have more accountability, and after doing my homework, Tenacious Fitness seemed like the best place to take the next step.

I started with a three-month commitment, training once a week. At first, I was a little skeptical that once a week would be enough, but it was what I could afford—and it turned out to be exactly what I needed. It fits my schedule, and Sean gives me an at-home workout to do as well. The workouts are always challenging but set up for success, with a great mix of warm-ups, accessory work, big lifts, and cardio. Sean also helped me dial in my nutrition in a way that actually feels sustainable.

Beyond just getting stronger, this experience has had a bigger impact. It’s not just a gym where you show up, work out, and leave—it really feels like a community. You have someone in your corner who’s invested in your success. Even beyond that, taking my own training seriously motivated my wife to start her own fitness journey, and now she’s consistent too.

I have exercised and been pretty fit all of my adult life. I've always maintained my cardio activities but I've never been able to stick to a strength training program. As I've gotten older I've realized that strength training is integral to my aging body in order to continue to be active in the ways I want to. My experience at Tenacious has been terrific. I love that they craft my workouts around my specific needs. They pay attention to the problematic areas (like my knees!) but still create full body workouts that feel impactful. Coach Paul is vigilant in checking that the level of the workout feels right to me and is always flexible in modifying whenever it's appropriate. I don't feel like just another person in a class. My workouts here feel very personal and I'm excited to continue building my strength and enjoying the community feeling at Tenacious.

Napa Tenacious Fitness has greatly improved my life for the better. I've been seeing coaches for personal training three times a week here for just over a year, and have loved it. As someone who has never been sporty or fit, they made getting into shape accessible, fun, and now an important part of my routine.

The coaches are all friendly and fun, and you can sense both the real care and technical expertise they put into the programming. It's welcoming and never intimidating. They take time to understand you, your goals, and starting point - every session is personalized to you, and they are constantly asking how your body is feeling and adapt to any injuries, aches and pains. Each session also focuses not just on resistance training, but on warm up, stretching, and all the accessory work to build a strong foundation. Exercises are explained in detail, including why they're in your program.

You never move too fast for what your body is capable of, but over time see incredible progress. I've been amazed by how far I've come in just a year, and for the first time in my life have some visible muscle, some decent strength, and no longer struggle with lower back pain. More than that, it's made fitness a part of my identity and routines that will stay with me. I now have the confidence to do more training on my own and explore other activities.

Through the year I've had multiple coaches - and depending on scheduling you might see different people across a week/month, usually with one main coach who you see the most. But because of the system and training at NTF, they can all pick right up where you left off with detailed notes and programming. I want to give a huge shoutout to the coaches I've trained with the most, including Sarah, Ryan, Alec, and Paul.

It's certainly a premium offering and comes with the price tag to match, but I'm incredibly happy with the investment I've made in myself. A huge thanks to the whole team at NTF, and a congratulations to Sean for the culture and team he has built.

I'm a 74-year-old woman who took a chance to join Napa Tenacious Fitness. I'm not athletic or graceful in any way. I was a little nervous, to say the least. Every one of the coaches has been great! I have never felt judged or out of place. They all know you by name and make you feel like you are part of the group. They know what they are doing and explain each step of your training in a way you understand why you do the stretches and exercises they are teaching you to do. I 100% recommend Tenacious Fitness to anyone wanting to get stronger, healthier, and happier with themselves.

I never write reviews but I've had a great experience at Napa Tenacious Fitness that I really want to share. I've trained at a lot of other gyms and with other trainers in the past, but the folks at NTF really tailored and personalized the workouts to me and my personal fitness goals, versus just running me through a standard workout. I also love working out in the space - it's so nice to not have to wait for machines and equipment and work out in an empty space just for me. Sean and Sarah made me feel really well taken care of, and I was able to do trial sessions before committing to purchasing a training package, which really helped me ensure they were a good fit before signing up. Highly recommend NTF both for people who already love working out and want to level up or for people who are just starting out or recovering from an injury and want extra guidance and fun workouts that keep you motivated.

I love Tenacious!! I started going almost a year ago and have grown so much in that time in regards to my strength training and energy. I'm a busy mom of two and a small business owner. It was a huge decision to invest in myself and train at Tenacious, but I cannot imagine starting my fitness journey any other way.
I have worked with all of the trainers and love each one. All of the trainers are POSITIVE, personable, and create really great workouts. I've never for a second felt intimidated or awkward.The workouts are challenging, and they change throughout the month (getting more difficult), and then change completely each new month. It keeps working out interesting!
I would have been intimidated using weights in a traditional gym setting, but now I've had so much practice bench-pressing and doing squats among many other exercises that I feel confident about working out solo or in a larger gym setting with a partner.
I had a really helpful nutrition consultation with Sean that I'd recommend as well!

I have consistently worked out my whole adult life. I have embraced ageing with gusto, until about a year ago when I developed arthritis in my knees. I was in significant pain and was angry that I could not run, hike, or even get into a child’s pose in yoga, not to mention walking up and down stairs. I continued to work out but was bogged down by the pain. I found a good orthopedic doctor and was placed on meds and eventually got cortisone shots (with an ungodly long needle) in my knees which gave me some relief. But I was still in pain and unable to maintain my normal fitness level. Then I found and started personal training with Sean McCawley and Tenacious Fitness. One of the best decisions I have made in a long time. I have been training with Sean for about six months and I am pain free without meds! Tenacious fitness methodology includes a focus on functional movement in addition to strength training. My workouts are tough, fun, and creative and all focused on strengthening my hips, glutes, hamstrings, calves, and core to increase flexibility and lessen the stress on my knees. I am more flexible than I have ever been, and I have surpassed my past fitness level. All the trainers at Tenacious Fitness are highly competent, friendly and seem to really love what they do. The facility is also cheerful, airy, and fully equipped with all the best fitness gear. I always feel so much better when I finish a training session and I highly recommend training at Tenacious Fitness!

I am that person who has always wanted to be in better shape, but just couldn't stick to a routine. Earlier this year, I made a decision that it was now or never. I joined one of the big gyms in town and tried some training sessions, but the environment didn't feel right. It was big and loud and not at all personal. So I called around to some of the smaller personal training gyms and decided to try Tenacious. My intro session was with Sarah, and after that session, I knew this was the right gym and the right program for me. I signed up for 3 months. Starting out was hard for me, but the coaches were all supportive and encouraging, and now I'm starting my second 3 month session. I'm seeing and feeling progress and I'm hooked! I've also used the nutrition counseling and massage! I give both of those 5 stars too!

I can’t compliment Darwin at Napa Tenacious Fitness enough. He takes my fun sports, golf and pickleball, seriously! From throwing tennis balls at me while I’m standing on one foot (to improve my fast reaction and balance for pickleball) to adjusting forearm and upper arm exercises to treat and prevent golfer’s elbow, Darwin has increased my confidence and ability in playing these sports. My handicap has dropped 5 points! My medical tests have also improved - from improving my bone density to improved cholesterol, blood sugar and triglyceride results. As a medical doctor, I also vouch for Darwin’s nutrition and fitness knowledge. He is up to date on these topics and I trust his advice. I turn 40 next June and have been trying to re-prioritize my health as a gift to myself and my family. Napa Tenacious Fitness has been a great resource and solution for me as I struggle to create exercise habits after babies. I normally have a baseline level of fitness but do much better with someone telling me how to workout and holding me accountable. Tenacious Fitness does both! I'm training for a mountain climb and knew I needed help to get me to the level of fitness required to not only be safe, but have a good time climbing. I've been working with Tenacious Fitness for a few months now and I've noticed big changes in both my physical level of fitness as well as my appearance. Hiking is getting easier, I'm lifting heavier, and I'm actually working out on my own more effectively since I've been assigned homework to do on my own. I'll be using their nutrition counseling soon too! They have so many ways to help you get to the fitness goals you've places and i highly recommend them if you want to take your fitness to the next level. Its also worth mentioning that they are extremely flexible with scheduling. They frequently check in to see how you're feeling throughout the course of your fitness journey. This was such a good decision on my end and I'll come back for another review after I've accomplished my goal!

I’ve been training with Tenacious for 27 months. I joined during Covid when I got a new job convinced that post covid we’d never be able to continue with my travel schedule. The flexibility and dynamicism of the entire team was unbelievable and we never missed a beat with my variable schedule. I’ve also never been able to do heavy strength work without injuries but their protocol of focusing on fundamentals and mobility has made a huge difference in my training. I’m stronger than I’ve ever been and injury free even with an incredibly challenging work schedule. I've been working out at NTF 1:1 with Moni for about a year and I absolutely love her coaching style. She's passionate about fitness and nutrition, and always builds great workout programs that are tailored to help me reach my goals. One of my main reasons for joining this gym is because it's 1:1 training. I started Deadlifting and doing Back Squats (on my own) a few months ago. I felt a little nervous because I knew my form was not right.

I was creating my own workout routine, which at times felt boring. I tried watching videos online to understand proper form and get new workout ideas, but I was unsure about my form and how much weight I should be lifting.

Then I joined Tenacious Fitness.
I feel so confident about my workout routine. I am lifting heavier without worrying about injury. I've learned a bunch of new exercises, and I know I am doing them the right way. My experience with Sean McCawley and Darwin Bobzien of Napa Tenacious Fitness has been life changing!
Never before would I have imagined signing up to work with a personal trainer! I have always belonged to a gym and settled into the back of the classes. To think of one person watching you for an hour was definitely not for me!
I was desperate. As a result of the pandemic the gyms closed and I also suffered a hip injury. I found it challenging to even walk the dog. Needless to say, I slowed down, gained weight and experienced decreased energy and motivation. Surgery was a viable option according to the MD, but 2 days prior to my scheduled surgery it was canceled. It would be months before I could be rescheduled. What now?
I had always enjoyed reading Sean McCawley’s well-researched articles in the newspaper. I was impressed at his wealth of knowledge and his ability to educate the layperson on body function and mechanics as well as nutrition.
After much deliberation, I finally scheduled an appointment to discuss the process and expectation of personal training. I made it clear I was only doing research and that it was likely not for me. It didn’t take long for me to recognize that this was a team of professionals and that I would be in good hands!
I began working with Darwin Bobzien and soon couldn’t imagine working with anyone else! He is so dedicated to providing the best outcome while remaining personable and fun!
Sean also assisted when scheduling required, offering his vast level of expertise. Both have been phenomenal!!! They were not like other trainers I observed in gyms who chatted with others around them or looked at their phones while “training” their client. Sean and Darwin both educated me on why they were choosing certain strengthening, balance or flexibility exercises. They described in detail the musculoskeletal movement patterns during each exercise. Emphasis on correct form was a constant. Based on my specific desires for improvement, Darwin’s goals for me were individualized and well organized.
I cannot believe the difference this experience has made! After three months I feel athletic again! My body is now craving a work-out every morning! I have returned to riding my bike long distances and have developed a home gym. I have been provided with home exercises to compliment my training. Recently when I put on my new outfit before attending a wedding, I looked in the mirror and said, “dang”! I noticed my improved posture and toned body and couldn’t wait to show my sexy self-off! I feel confident and with an improved mood for sure!
And, for the surgery – it is no longer recommended!
I will forever be recommending Napa Tenacious Fitness to anyone in need of a jump start like me!

Five Stars is not enough to express my gratitude and appreciation for Sean and his staff of trainers at NTF. I had never been a 'working out' type person. My physical job and hobbies had been adequate in keeping me reasonably fit.

That all changed in October of 2020 when I broke my back in a fall. I had massive debilitating nerve pain from a misplaced (shifted) L4 vertebrae. I tried all the less invasive treatments (steroid injections, acupuncture, chiropractic, TENS, THC-CBD, anti inflammatories) with no improvement. If I wanted to be active again, I would need spinal fusion surgery with screws and rods.

An orthopedic surgeon friend recommended that I prepare myself for a good surgical outcome by working out regularly before my surgery to improve core strength, flexibility, and balance. I had read Sean's health and fitness column in the Napa Register and scheduled a consultation.

Sean was super supportive and built a plan to 'build some strong scaffolding' in my core so that during recovery I would have the muscle support to allow the fusion to take hold. I visited twice a week for three months before my surgery.

Post surgery I surpassed every milestone in record time. I returned to NTF three months after surgery and will continue for many years to come. Using programs designed by Sean particular to my needs, Trainers Antonio Vivan, Alec Cornwell, and Darwin Bobzien, have brought me improved strength, balance and coordination.

My surgical outcome is fantastic and a majority of that is due to NTF. My fitness is better than it's been in 30 years. 5 stars ? How many stars do you give a team that took you from a cranky sit around and suffering guy to someone who is on his bike 80 miles a week and walking, hiking and enjoying life ?

I started at Tenacious Fitness in February after spending 2021 with a couple injuries that had really stopped me from working out for most of the year. Combine that with age related weight gain and I was really feeling down about myself and the shape I was in. I felt that I wanted to start to get back in shape with a personal trainer rather than in front of others at a class. I am a senior who has exercised regularly all my life. However, the last few years I found myself doing the same routine each day and knew as I got older that I needed more variation to target all muscle groups and flexibility, specifically with the addition of weight and resistance training. I had been reading Sean’s columns in the Napa Register for awhile and liked his approach and set up a consultation. My goal was to come away with a personalized and varied training regimen that I could take from the gym to my home and continue on my own. We began shortly afterwards and I am completely satisfied with the results.

We met once a week for three months. I would be given a four week training period that would have approximately 25 exercises ranging from warm ups to strength and resistance. Each week the staff would observe my movements to make sure I was learning to do them properly. Correct form is one of their highest priorities. Each four week period introduced a new blend of exercises and new additions to keep things fresh. By the end of the three month training program I felt I now had a very versatile set of exercises I can continue to draw on. Sean also provided an ongoing workout schedule that I can mix up from day to day, week to week, or month to month as needed. There is no longer anything routine about the routine. And better yet, it is all something I can continue to do on my own with a minimum amount of equipment.

Having a personal trainer made a huge difference. Sean, along with his staff, have a very thoughtful and patient approach. They are friendly, very good listeners, knowledgeable, and thorough. Sean puts a lot of thought into each program based on the feedback you give. His knowledge of kinesiology allows him to create a personal training program for just about any request. Sean obviously loves his work and was always happy when I had questions so he could impart any helpful information he had. The trainers are all great, and lucky for me, non-judgmental. I gave them plenty of opportunities to laugh as I went through some exercises but they always turned my mistakes into a way to improve. They really are there to help you do your best in reaching your goals. I still plan to use Sean in the future for ongoing advice and/or additional training sessions as needed. He always makes himself available. Highest recommendation.

So, I never leave reviews, but Napa Tenacious Fitness deserves it because it truly is a hidden gem! I think everyone should check this gym and the trainers out. I am so happy to have found this place and found trainers that really care about your health through fitness, nutritious, and just overall wellbeing. Their approach is very personalized, which is great because everyone has had a different fitness journey. For a while I have been looking for a gym/trainer that focused on injury prevention through resistance training and teaching proper form. A few years ago, I was at the peak of my fitness, I was lifting heavy weights, dancing, and doing HIIT regularly. I got into a car accident and that messed up my back, which then made me very hesitant about lifting. I went to PT and Chiro and tried to look for a gym that would help me get stronger and gain confidence to lift heavy again. After searching for a while, through a friend’s recommendation, I found Napa Tenacious. The trainers at this gym create catered exercise routines that focus on your personal goals through different phases so that you can progress to your goals in an injury free manner. Having been an active tennis player most of my life, I became fairly sedentary following total knee replacement surgery in February 2020. I also had surgery on my rotator cuff in 2019. After not going to the gym for 15 years I decided to give personal training a try based on the other reviews I saw online. I'm glad I did! Not only do you get one-on-one personal training, but you learn completely new exercises, strengthen and rehabilitate past injuries, receive two hour tutorial on nutrition and a custom diet plan. Did I mention a weekly and monthly life goal plan? Well they do that too, and make sure you stick to it!

To start with, Napa Tenacious Fitness has made it so my strength and form(in performing various exercises) has vastly improved. I have been a client for over 6 months and the physical change that I have noticed in myself due to the personalized goal setting/meeting standards is simply fantastic. I was able to complete and pass my Cadet Fitness Assessment due to the assistance and training I received from the trainers. I cannot speak highly enough about Sean and his team! I have been attending weekly training sessions at Tenacious Fitness for over 6 months. Sean is passionate, knowledgeable and takes the time to truly understand my goals. Most importantly Sean listens to my feedback to ensure my training sessions are fun, diverse and target the areas that I want to focus on. I have been battling a knee injury for over 15yrs and very quickly after a few months of consistent training at Tenacious Fitness I noticed a total change in my knee mobility and strength - this in turn has improved my quality of life! In addition to my knee rehabilitation Sean has also helped me gain a better understanding of nutrition and overall wellness, I'm proud to say that I have also lost 8lbs along the way. Moving back to Napa Valley in 2015 was an adjustment, especially with the wonderful food and wine to indulge in. By January of 2017, i was ready to make a change- eat better- exercise regularly- but needed some serious motivation. My sister had been going to Tenacious for 3 years and recommended i speak with Sean about my overall fitness goals and the reasons why i wanted to get fit. It's important to understand that at Tenacious, the "why" is crucial for them to know- in order for them to help you reach that goal. it's much more than just a gym, its personal one-on-one training that is specialized to you and your body- to help you achieve your goal. the attention and care given to me over this past year, as been truly incredible. you will focus on movements and exercises that you enjoy- ones that you are good at it.
Overall, i wanted feel better- look better- lose 10+ lbs- and fit into my clothes better. After a few phone calls with Sean, i started at Tenacious on January 19th, and as of Oct 31st- i lost 13lbs- dropped a pant size- a shirt size- and overall feel awesome!! it was slow weight loss about 1-2 lbs a month, but very steady and consistent and i never gave up. Completing this goal in 10 months surpassed my expectation but i know i couldn't have done it without Tenacious. Can't say enough amazing things about Sean and his team and his fitness routines.

Sean is a great at what he does. The way he explains body movement and conditioning has really helped me to educate myself in the physiology of my body. I have never had a workout program or any sort of exercise regime. Sean’s custom program for me has pushed me to a level of fitness I would never have achieved on my own. All the trainers at Napa Tenacious Fitness are very educated in body mechanics and working with them has taught me how to move during my workouts which has prevented injury and sped my recovery.

I originally went to see Sean after becoming frustrated with my body. At 34, I could not put on socks without tightness or discomfort in my lower body. I sought help from a chiropractor and yoga studio. Both left me feeling good that day, but did nothing to change my behaviors or life for the long term. With Sean and Kevin’s help, I feel I have created strategies and tools that I can use for the rest of my life to keep me fit and healthy (and now I can put my socks on without wincing).

Simply put, Sean McCawley is the real deal. Sean was my strength and conditioning coach while I trained for my first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu completion. He made sure I circuit-trained in a way that would emulate my fight so that I would have cardio to push my opponent to the depths of the rounds. With few secondly left in the first round, I was down by 12 points behind. My training with Sean allowed me to trust my cardio, out-pace my opponent and catch a guillotine choke to win the fight.

I would encourage anyone of any age, gender, or current level of fitness to train with Sean. Training with him will allow you to safely and effectively reach your fitness goals. I can't say enough about Sean and his company Tenacious Fitness. If you are serious about changing your life from a fitness/health perspective, he IS the guy to go to. ESPECIALLY if you have particular health issues that need to be addressed while coming up with a workout routine that respects those issues. In my case, a 15+ years series of lower back problems, and Sean has come up with a workout that accommodates that. It's even easy when traveling, which I do a lot. I'm stronger and fitter than ever (almost 49) and do seriously enjoy it and look forward to it three times a week (amazing in itself!). As with other reviewers, I've tried other trainers/clubs, etc. and NEVER gotten the kind of attention and results as I do now. I might also add that I totally dig the comfort of working out in private, and Sean is a easygoing, smart, straight-up good egg of a guy who is comfortable with just about everyone. Just go see for yourself!
