Four months ago, after a failed attempt at trying to hire a trainer/ coach to work with me who could help me reach my goals (which changed over the pandemic), I googled Oakland Trainers and found Nick's social media. I started watching his videos and immediately felt like his style would be right for me. Prior to the pandemic, I was very active, and I tried my best to keep all that going with gyms shut down. And while I was athletic, ran marathons, practiced yoga - I somehow gained 50 pounds prior to the pandemic.
I lost that weight during the pandemic, with keto, yoga, Pilates and more running by myself. Adding in some modest weightlifting. But I was getting stuck in my routine and was not really gaining in muscle or overall health. I still had lower back pain that kept me from enjoying life. I knew I needed more. And from someone who make training fun and give me new experiences from which to grow.

Fast forward to today and Nick and I have been working together every week since. His knowledge of fitness, weight training and the body alongside his humor and curiosity make our sessions smart and fun. Nick listened to me and what I needed. He designed a program for me, which included introducing me to PT resources. He works alongside them to help create a coaching and life plan that adds value to my routine. Due to his coaching and mentoring me, starting to feel much younger. I am more than just walking around pain free. I am doing burpees and box jumps for the first time in many years. Thanks to Nick and his coaching.

Nick is such a nice fellow. That's important to me. He is not some ego driven trainer with "one way." He really listens and works with you. He comes back with research and new ideas. He is flexible with your input and makes sure he is incorporating what he learns from you into your routine. This is not a guy who just grabs a chart and gives you the same exercises as his other sessions and clients. He is a real partner in your fitness. Oh, and he is building a community of resources and friends around him. He creates opportunities for weekend community building activities - like hikes, bike rides and races.

He is the teacher and the student. Always learning and growing and bringing that to you. Don't hesitate to meet with Nick. I am sure you won't be sorry.

Ada is an amazing personal trainer. After only a few months working together, I am already so much stronger. She listens carefully to my goals and has been thoughtful and creative in putting together a program that helps me get stronger, develop more flexibility, and improve balance and movement patterns. When I struggle from time to time with an exercise, she is terrific at diagnosing what's going on, and suggesting a modification to the exercise, or a stretch or other warm-up movement that will help. She pays close attention to my form and helps me adjust as needed so that I avoid injury. I historically have been pretty injury-prone, so I was nervous about going back to the gym after a few years away, but Ada made me feel comfortable from the beginning, and has always made sure that I am working out safely. Not only am I NOT getting injured at the gym, but also the work I have been doing with Ada has resulted in fewer injuries from moving around in my daily life, as I am stronger and moving better!

I highly recommend both Ada and Nu Fitness!

Currently work with Jenn and she’s absolutely fabulous. Amazing sense of humor which helps when you have a 7 am workout. Really knows her stuff and models everything before trying. Consistently checks in after a workout to see how I’m doing. During our workouts she’s attentive and locked into my form and making sure I’m feeling ok. Tim is a fantastic trainer and the gym is well equipped, friendly and chill. I've been a member at Nu Fitness for six months now, and I still am always impressed with the place. The equipment is modern and is always in good condition, the trainers are consistently correcting form (which was incredibly helpful when I first started weight lifting), and the ambience is electric especially during their spin classes in the evening. The locker rooms are spotless and full of fresh towels, they even have infused water stations. What a find NF has been! Referred from a friend. Nick is the best trainer I’ve ever worked with (only my second haha). Not only is he seriously fit himself and can model totally proper form, he takes a completely holistic approach to training, including being mindful of clients mental, emotional and spiritual fitness. It's been 4 weeks since I stated at Nu Fitness, but its long enough to give Nick, his trainers and the facility a positive review. I spent a few days looking for a personal trainer close to work. After some searches on the Internet and Yelp reviews, I started reading reviews about Nu Fitness and Nick. After some positive reviews, I filled out the form and emailed him. I noted my fitness journey to this point in life and briefly explained what I wanted to accomplish going forward.
I found myself in a terrible routine, work 12 hours, then heading to the local breweries for a few beers and dinner.

Needless to say this didn't bode well for my wellbeing Looking back over the years, I had gained control of health in my mid-30s, where I lost 40+ pound, gained strength and started running. Running led me to a period in my life that saw me conquer a few 50-mile races. An achievement I never thought I would attempt, hell I never thought I would run 5 miles. Life changed. Priorities changed and slowly I saw everything I had worked hard for slowly slip away.
Now age 55, life wasn't getting any easier. I knew I was not very active. I also knew that my daily routine was not one for success. I decided I needed to help make a change in my life, but more importantly to make that change permanent.

Previously I joined 24 Hour Fitness (never again) but found too many excuses NOT to go. Sound familiar? Searching Yelp for personal trainers, I ran down a local list in the Oakland/Alameda area. Reading profiles and reviews, checking website, I ran across a trainer, Nick Baltazar. It felt right. I emailed Nick with my story and filled out the form on the Nu Fitness website.

It wasn't even a day and I had a response from Nick and we were talking about my fitness journey, where I had been and what I wanted to achieve. He was willing to work with my schedule to get three days of training. After a day of communication with Nick, he connected me with Wyatt.

I met Wyatt at Nu Fitness, located at 2345 Broadway, parking in The Hive. Yes, they have easy parking and validation while you are at your session. This makes getting in and out quick and easy. I was highly impressed with the facility, the way Nick had spoke about it, I knew I would be. The work out areas were clean and profession, a small reception area, all Rogue power racks and weights, with room for everyone to work on their fitness goals.

Wyatt Berreman, my personal trainer worked with me, after provided basic information from Nick on what I wanted to accomplish. He created a plan specifically for me, tracking my journey, weights and reps for each session. It's been just about 2 months, but its been reestablishing a workout routine. I have a sense of accomplishment, even through I don't see it in the mirror...yet. It will happen. Wyatt has been a wealth of knowledge and has helped create a plan for me to gain strength, balance and flexibility. But also work within my limitations due to previous surgeries on my knee and shoulder.

I am very impressed with Nu Fitness, Nick, Wyatt and what they have to offer in the way of personal training. I would highly recommend giving Nick a chance to show you want they can do to help create a fitness plan for to achieve your fitness goals

I absolutely love training at Nu Fitness and working with Doug. I started working with him at the beginning of the year to build more discipline and consistency in the gym. Doug took the time to understand my goals and created customized full-body routines.

I’m a fairly active person with prior gym experience, I had fallen out of my routine and was struggling to get back on track. With Doug’s guidance, I regained my strength, improved my form, and started seeing results. I also learned a lot of dad jokes - he loves those.

His approach is both challenging and supportive! If he see's that you're strong expect to add weight on that squat rack! Loved working with him and how strong I felt after each session. If you are looking for some accountability - definitely work with Doug.

This was also an opportunity for me to use gym equipment and not have another person hovering over me because they want to use it too. At Nu Fitness - each trainer has a space/ squat rack area, and mirror where you can workout - there's two other rooms that have additional equipment. Yes, there's other clients, but you won't feel overwhelmed by the amount of people.

A few more pluses - validated parking, showers/lockers, fresh magazines in the waiting area.

I was searching for a personal trainer in Oakland who could help me stay accountable and build momentum. As someone who struggles with task paralysis and self-motivation, I needed more than just a trainer—I needed an accountability buddy who could provide both structure and encouragement.

Enter Nick, the owner of Nu Fitness. I interviewed a few trainers before being referred to him by a friend, and from our very first consultation, I knew he was different. Nick was incredibly attentive, kind, and thoughtful. He took the time to listen to my goals and asked insightful questions about what motivates me. I thrive on positive reinforcement, and Nick’s supportive and encouraging demeanor made all the difference.

What really stood out was the extra support Nick provides outside of sessions. He created a personalized program and a weekly plan that kept me on track between our meetings. This level of care and attention made me feel seen and supported in a way I hadn’t experienced before.

I’ve always felt intimidated by male trainers—especially those who seem like they practically live at the gym—but Nick’s approach was welcoming and non-intimidating. He encouraged me to think about performance-based goals to stay motivated, and we decided on achieving my first pull-up. Thanks to his guidance, I reached that goal in just six weeks!

He has his own small gym in his house and it opens to the outside so you’re not with a bunch of people breathing on each other and you get ALL the attention. Tim has been a fantastic trainer for me. My initial call with Nick (owner) was very detailed, and he was an attentive and validating listener. I was matched with Doug (trainer), who has been wonderful. We have been working together for about 4 months, and I am definitely more able to do basic life tasks without exhaustion (which was my goal). I even have a (tiny but growing) bicep muscle now!

I’ve been working out with Nick for about 8 months and I just cannot recommend him enough. I am in awe of the fitness progress I’ve made with his help — I was pretty out of shape and recovering from an injury when we started, and he helped me recover faster, train to avoid re-injuring myself, and got me to a level of strength and fitness I’ve never had before.

Nick is the best personal trainer I could ever asked for! My husband and I met Nick around August 2021 and he made us feel so comfortable from our very first session. Nu fitness has been super helpful for my fitness goals. I’m a yoga instructor, cyclist, and runner, and sought out personal training as a way to even out imbalances from years of activity and some major injuries (as well as some bad habits). Tim is my trainer, and has been SUPER HELPFUL in this process. He built me a very tactful program targeting my goals, and my yoga practice & other areas of activity improved well beyond expectations. Within just a month of training I noticed significant strength gained in my shoulders which really helped in improving my yoga inversions (finally got a fore-arm stand, yeah!)

Aside from helping me achieve my fitness goals, Tim has been so welcoming, friendly, and nonjudgemental that I’ve felt really comfortable in our sessions. He’s made strength training very approachable, which I had always felt intimidated from in the past. 10/10 would recommend!

Nick at NuFitness was my trainer for 5 months and I had a great experience, 5 stars, I highly recommend. As things opened up from the pandemic it was hard for me to get back into an active lifestyle but Nick put together a program that set me up for success.

I would say Nick’s training style is best suited for people who want to achieve greater performance and wellness that is sustainable, versus aggressive lift goals, though I’m sure he can do that too. His philosophies are more about building a mind-muscle connection and ensuring the right muscles are properly engaged before lifting heavy. Perfect for me in my fitness journey.

Nick trains most of his clients at Truve in Oakland. It’s a small gym that provides TRX, free weights, squat racks, stationary bikes, benches, etc. The locker rooms provide towels and showers, and you get free secure parking behind with your sessions. If you’re looking for highly specialized equipment, there are bigger gyms with more variety but at Truve all of the basics for a great workout are covered.

Nick has done an amazing job building a fitness community amongst his clients, which further reinforced adopting an active lifestyle. Nick plans bike rides, hikes, slack lining, Spartan races, etc. for all of the NuFitness clients so you get the chance to meet new people and participate in weekend activities rather than defaulting to couch potato activity. I found this reinforced my fitness progress and helped me see my results in the real world.

In summary, I was able to achieve my goals to do pull ups, hand stands, and squat my body weight in 5 months through Nick’s program and training philosophies. I highly recommend NuFitness for other people who have wellness goals and want to achieve a more active lifestyle to supplement work from home or post pandemic habits.

I can’t recommend Nick enough! My fitness isn’t something that comes easy to me. I wasn’t the kid who was picking up a football and tossing it around with my dad. Nick is definitely the trainer you want in corner if you are looking to take serious steps to improve your overall fitness level, as well as to build a solid foundation of healthy lifestyle habits. At my last check-up, I was told that my cholesterol and A1C levels were elevated compared to my pre-pandemic numbers. They were not yet in the danger zone, but at 64 years old with a family history of heart disease and diabetes, I took this news very seriously. However, I found myself needing direction and help setting reasonable fitness goals. Nick gave me all that and so much more! He helped me stay on track with positive reinforcement, checking in with me outside of regular training sessions to keep me accountable, and guiding me through rough patches with his incredible uplifting attitude. His energy is contagious, and I feel he is genuinely invested in my success. We recently celebrated my having lost 20 lbs. in 10 weeks, but the journey has just begun. As Nick says, it's all about consistency! I highly recommend Nick if you want somebody who will teach you and motivate you, keep you accountable without being judgmental, and stick with you through the highs and lows on the path to your individual goals. As a long-time daily exerciser, I don't often seek outside advice for training. I tend to be stuck in my ways & like to stubbornly do my hour on the stairmaster + weight training circuits I designed myself. Nick is the first person to get me to try other modes of working out, & for the first time I was motivated to actually do an entire HIIT workout. Nick designed a glute-focused HIIT routine for me as glutes are my area of focus, and went through the entire 30-minute workout with me. After 17+ years of daily workouts either in the gym or on a hiking trail, this is the first time I've appreciated that I can get a satisfying workout in the comfort of my home/backyard/basically anywhere. Nick took me through the HIIT moves & routine, and also provided helpful cues to alter my positioning in order to make the moves more effective & prevent injury (he taught me to do something called the "draw in" maneuver). I'm still a stairmaster devotee, but with my busy schedule & long hours in the hospital, sometimes the gym is closed/isn't an option. I'm extraordinarily grateful to finally have alternatives (that I am actually motivated to do) to get my daily cardio fix in novel ways.

In addition to the HIIT routine, Nick also designed a great spin class circuit that we did together, and continues to provide me with other types of support and motivation to incorporate things like stretching, balance, foam-rolling, and other things I tend to neglect or don't want to spend time doing.

Finally, Nick spends time pouring over research and content from renowned personal trainers and physical therapists, and really knows his stuff. He understands the body and fitness at a deep level, and is constantly sharing new information that is super helpful in building a well-rounded fitness regimen. If you're looking for ways to mix up your training or just starting out, you definitely will not regret investing in some personal training with Nick.
