I've been a member at Orangetheory Montclair for about 5 months and usually enjoy the workouts and coaches, but my experience on October 24th at the 8:30 AM class left me really disappointed.

Before class started, I told the front desk that my heart rate monitor wasn't showing up on the screen. They told me they'd handle it and to go ahead and start class without it. Twenty minutes passed without a working band until I waved over the coach, Elliot, who kindly stepped in to help. It's very likely I would have gone the entire class without a monitor if he hadn't intervened--twice. First, I was given my own band back and told it would work, but it didn't. Then Elliot had to tell the manager to give me a loaner band and comp it. By that time, half the workout was over. Since the heart rate data is such a core part of what you pay for at Orangetheory, this really undercut the experience.

After class, the manager suggested the problem was with my band, but it synced perfectly to my phone both before and after class. When I asked for a replacement class (since I'm on the 4-classes-per-month plan), she was resistant and said she'd get back to me. I never heard back from her or from corporate customer service, despite reaching out through the official website. What's been most disappointing since then is that the manager hasn't acknowledged me at all when I've come in--no hello, no follow-up, no recognition of the issue. That lack of accountability and basic customer service doesn't reflect well on the studio or the brand.

I want to emphasize that the classes themselves are excellent and the coaches are consistently fantastic, which is why I'm continuing to go. They make the workouts worth it. But I hope the studio's customer service and follow-through can start matching the quality of the coaching team.

The coaches are absolutely wonderful! 5 stars for them. Unfortunately, the customer service is lacking. There is poor communication, unresponsiveness to emails & calls, and it is not uncommon to run into unfriendly staff at the front desk.

My most recent frustrating experience occurred when I showed up 5 minutes late (due to an emergency circumstance - literally a fire truck blocking the road). Despite the class being half empty, I was not allowed to enter the class. The man at the front desk was not only rude and unsympathetic about the situation but took it upon himself to ensure I was double charged for the class that I was not allowed to attend.

I understand that a client repeatedly showing up late is problematic but there is something to be said for empathy in light of unusual circumstances. After all, this is a service we are paying for and not a military boot camp. Nevertheless, if OT wants to uphold this late arrival policy then it should 1) be very clearly communicated when you sign up (the policy was never mentioned to me or I wouldn’t have tried to still show up to the class late) and 2) be universally enforced. There have been numerous times when I witnessed people being let in to class 10 minutes late which makes their 5 minute late policy arbitrary at best and discriminatory at worst.

Though their classes are enjoyable, I wouldn’t recommend paying hundreds of dollars a month and locking yourself into a membership with a gym that has poor customer service.

I dropped in for a trial class and felt extremely welcomed. Shoutout to Kayla at the front desk, and coach Jon, who were super kind and did an awesome job walking me through things. The gym is clean and very well maintained. My class was a nice mix of beginners and experienced folks. Can’t wait to come back!

Review update: I have been there from the start and the team there just keeps getting better. I appreciate Head Coach Elliott and him really wanting to help you get better. Coach Elliott and Coach Jon ask you your goals, give you support and push you when needed all while cheering you on. A few friends and I go consistently and we always feel challenged and know we are going to get great coaching when we get there.

This has been a great addition to Oakland and to those trying to get more fitness in their lives. I have been going since they opened their doors and love the staff, coaches, classes and music. Everyone is so friendly and they really challenge you to be 1% better each time. So happy I have Coach Elliott and Jon who care about helping me in my goals while making it fun. I’m not going to lie- having great music is essential and Coach Melvin knows how to bring a good playlist and workout too. Thanks Lex for making sure the space and place runs amazing well.

I can't say enough great things about Coach Elliott and this workout class! From the moment I started, he’s been a constant source of motivation, energy, and encouragement. Even on days when I didn’t feel like showing up, Coach Elliott’s positive attitude and commitment kept me going.

He knows how to push you just the right amount—challenging, but never overwhelming. His workouts are fun, varied, and super effective. Whether you’re a beginner or more advanced, Coach Elliott makes you feel supported.

If you're looking for a coach who genuinely cares, knows his stuff, and will keep you motivated every step of the way, this is the class for you!

UPDATE -- I quit Orangetheory 2 months ago.

I have been a member of Orangetheory for almost 5 years and recently moved from Pleasanton to Oakland. This Montclair studio is my new home and I'm really enjoying the coaches and energy. The coaches and front desk staff continue to show that they care and are invested in their members. My only gripe about this studio is that some members don't respect others in the class when it comes to leaving the equipment when their specific block is over. The number of times that I've had to wait an extra few minutes (after the coach has told the class to switch stations) standing behind a treadmill while the person before me ends their session is ridiculous. I'd really appreciate the coaches pushing members through to their next station and reminding folks that their are 30+ other folks in the class who deserve an equal workout.

I also want to make a note - not about this studio - but about Luisa... who seems to be in some sort of leadership role with the local Bay Area OTF studios. Frankly, her behavior is concerning me because I have frequented the Pleasanton, Dublin and Montclair studios over the past 2-3 years and I've now seen 3 OTF staffers crying while she talks to them. Coaches across the Bay Area have left studios because of her leadership, which has impacted me as a member. I walked into the Starbucks next door to the Montclair studio a couple of weeks ago and I noticed Luisa sitting with the studio's manager at a table. Luisa was very animated and the manager was crying. I'd like to share some feedback for Luisa as a member and woman in Corporate America - please learn to be a better leader. Your actions are being noticed outside your workforce and they're impacting members/customers in a negative way. Also, if you are going to have a tough conversation with your staff, please have them in a private space -- not in public. I do not think I need to explain my rationale for this.

Full disclosure: I identify as a hiker and have never been a gym or workout person before joining OTF almost 2 years ago. I have never exercised this consistently and pushed myself this hard in my over 50+ years. What do I love so much about it? What sets this studio apart from others is Coach Elliot and Coach Jon. They are such a source of energy and motivation! They have taught me so much and are fun good humans too. I love that the classes are never the same, the accountability and encouragement. Love love love this studio and workout.

I've been with the Montclair OTF studio since it opened and have loved every workout--not kidding. I've tried at least 6 studios in other cities and am happy to say that Montclair is the BEST! The OTF method is incredibly effective in helping every member achieve their personal fitness goals but it's truly the stellar coaches that make the difference. Elliot is an amazing head coach. Not only has he built a great team of coaches but he stays in touch with the members by continuing to coach. He is mindful about form on the floor and knows exactly when to cue to keep us going on the tread/row. The bathrooms are very clean, with nice amenities. We also love the front desk team! Lex, the manager, runs a tight ship always with a smile. :)

If I could, I would give the Montclair studio 10 stars. I joined as a member when it opened in September 2022 and have been attending regularly ever since—only taking breaks when I’m out of the country on vacation twice a year. This workout format has been truly transformative for me, improving both my physical appearance and overall well-being, both mentally and physically.

Each class presents a new set of challenges, keeping workouts engaging and enjoyable. The team is incredible—everyone, from the administrative staff to the coaches, is dedicated and supportive. Coaches Elliot and Jon are exceptional, and I couldn’t recommend them more highly.

I’m truly grateful for this studio and the positive impact it has had on my life.

250 classes today!!! :-)

I joined in November '23, and it's been quite a journey. Day by day, week by week, month by month, I have seen incredible progress. The way the classes and challenges are set up constantly shows your progress. Much of my transformation is also because of the coaches [Elliot, Jon, Mel & Sonia]. They are there to answer any questions you have (and I have too many) and are always up for a discussion. They are patient, have high energy, and will go above & beyond to see you succeed. I love the office staff; they are also invested in your success & cheer you on at every step.

I love OTF Montclair, and I cannot thank them enough. I can't wait to update this review with a photo of my 1000-class sign.

It's always more fun to exercise with other people, and the camaraderie at Orange Theory is second to none. The coaches are great at getting everyone involved and encouraging everyone to push themselves to there best.

I've been working out at the Montclair Orange Theory for almost a year and a half. There are so many reasons why I stick with it not the least of which are the warm, friendly, helpful staff. I love all the coaches but Elliott is hands down the best coach I have ever been in class with and Sonia, a newer coach, is also fantastic. As a Type A busy business owner I need to get in and get it done and Orange Theory does that for me. I get worked every single time but it goes pretty fast and the community energy is great.

Orange theory is the most rewarding and entertaining way to hit all of your fitness goals! I personally need the energy of a shared experience, great coaching, group circuits to keep the good momentum going and Orange Theory has all of that and much more. The coaches are amazing and follow you throughout the class, motivating you to push your limits but still in a safe and knowledgeable way. I always feel better after an OT class compared to before the class. Thank you OT for rocking my world!

I joined OTF Montclair when it opened a few years ago and it’s been great! It’s the busiest one I’ve been to by far and it is my favorite way to start my day! The SAs are so helpful and we appreciate you keeping up with all our needs and being there early with us 6am-ers (and the 5am-ers which is not me, but go them!)
We are also so lucky to have head coach Elliott, who despite being so busy and coaching so many classes (always full & often wait listed) he spends time with you individually and helps you improve each class! Coach Jon, Sonia and Mel also bring great energy! It’s a small but mighty studio and the regulars appreciate you!

I was a little hesitant to try Orange Theory because I’ve always been someone who prefers to get my workouts outside, running or hiking to clear my mind. But I also know how important strength training is, especially as we age (hello stronger bones, better metabolism, and injury prevention!), and I needed to stop making excuses for not doing it on my own. So I finally gave OTF a shot, and I’m so glad I did!

The workouts are varied, fast-paced, and engaging, I’m never bored. Coach Elliot and Jon are fantastic: welcoming, encouraging, and they somehow know exactly when you need a little push. As someone brand new to weight training, I had no idea what I was doing, but the instructions are super clear (the little demo screens are a lifesaver). I’ve also never been a treadmill fan, but I have to admit the treadmill workouts are so great that I’ve even joined some Tread 50 classes for extra training. And the rowing? Love it.

I’m officially hooked on OTF and actually look forward to every class!

I just can't say enough great things about my experience at Orange Theory for the past 2 plus years. If you are wondering if you should try out a class, the answer is YES. Head Coach Elliott is so fun and energetic and incredibly supportive. Last week he sat next to a member who didn't think she could beat her previous time at the 200 meter row, and with his encouragement, she did.

Coaches Sonia, Mel and Jon all bring a great vibe and energy to every single class and are super tuned in and present. Marco, Lex, and Dior who head up the front desk and make sure everything runs smoothly are all so great.

OTF Montclair keeps me sane! The team has built a community centered atmosphere and I always feel better once I get through my workout. I run faster and lift heavier then I have in the past but everyone makes sure no matter your fitness level you get what you need. I can't say enough positive things about OTF Montclair studio. My whole life, I never thought, (ever !) that I would enjoy workout classes this much. I always stayed away for some reason or another but I came here on a whim over 2.5 years ago and it's become a steady and important part of my life.

I've been to other OTF studios and Montclair is CLEARLY the best in terms of the friendly vibes with other people working out and just the overall positive energy. I go to 6am classes and it's awesome to feel like I've got a little group that I see often - it's comforting and supportive.

Finally, Coach Elliott is the shit, he's a master at what he does and I honestly credit him with helping me through some tough times in my life, (though he may not know it). Thanks OTF Montclair, see you Tuesday morning :)

I really the enjoyed the class. Unfortunately, the front desk and manager communication is extremely tricky so I won't sign up for membership if they don't respond to me in the next 2 days. The website says it's a free class if you live within 5 mi of the studio. I live 3.5 mi from the studio. When I got there front desk staff tells me they might have to charge me for the class because I don't have an Oakland zip code. They say they will have the manager call me to let me know if so. I get a charge within an hour of leaving, and a text message saying I was charged, and absolutely no communication since.

Danielle is the best but that is all I can say. I put my membership on hold and was told there was a monthly fee to put it on hold. Which I thought was odd considering so many other subscription based services in the area allow you to put memberships on hold for no fee. Nevertheless I paid anyway. When I made the decision to join a different facility and cancel I made sure I alotted enough time to be within the cancellation window but the owners mandated I not only pay another month for the hold but an entire month of membership fees. Keep in mind I hadn’t been there for months because my membership had been on hold. I was hoping out customer service and the fact I was a founding member of the Montclair location they may have given some sort of courtesy waiver but they didn’t. I don’t think they considered I might have come back or referred others but that didn’t seem to matter. The owners of Montclair also own Emeryville and Oakland so after this experience even if I wanted to come back I wouldn’t. But again Danielle is the best instructor there and shouldn’t be penalized because of poor customer engagement policies.

Been going here for 4 months now. Highly recommend. You will get in better shape, especially cardio. Lots of natural light and airflow from outside. You will enjoy the classes and want to come back!

4 stars because the lobby is way too small and awkward especially if you need to use the restroom. Where everyone is blocking, waiting and or staring at you when you enter and exit. Just so poorly designed…

I recommend getting rid of the merch section that no one buys from anyhow and make more room for people to move about between classes.

I signed up in February for a month membership after a free class. I learned the hard way you're basically signing up for two months, since if you want to cancel, you can't do that till the next billing cycle-so you'd have to cancel right away when you sign up. That's the catch. Once I signed up, all the text communication and support would cease and would take a week until someone got back to me. They got my money so who cares about customer service anymore. It's May and I am still getting charged. is the whole OTF one big SCAM?

It's always packed as they don't have enough classes during the day or weekends and you have to plan weeks in advance to reserve your spot on the calendar if you don't want to rely on the day-off-good-luck-getting-in-last-minute-after-being-on-the-waitlist.
Also the 8-hour cancellation policy is ridiculous, because if you get injured or feel sick in the morning, you're losing the class unless you've subscribed to unlimited and then those people don't even care about canceling on time, as their classes don't count. You have to battle the parking and come in and wait to see if not enough people show up.
It's best to buy individual classes, if you're a WORKING PARENT, because it could be impossible to make it there even twice a week.
Not a place to relax, as it's loud, fast-paced and often confusing, you really have to pay attention to the coach's instructions non-stop.
Brandon was a wonderful coach though, 5 stars to him. Giving it 2 stars for the management and policies.

I love OTF Montclair. I’ve been attending about 5x per week for the past 6 months and it has changed my life! While not a great athlete and a bit skeptical about group classes/workouts, the coaches like Danielle, Nicole, Allie and Branda, provide just enough instruction, encouragement, passion, enthusiasm and sense of competition to make it fun while challenging and allowing me to “do my own thing” within a group class. The front desk team is wonderful—always helpful, warm, friendly and they know me by name! Thank you, OTF Montclair!

Fairly new member and my first time signing up for the Transformation Challenge in January. I’m having a ton of fun attending extra (and special) classes. We’ll see if all of this fun shows results at the end of the challenge in March. LOL

The folks at OTF Montclair have been nothing but the best since day one! I was skeptical about the theory at first but decided to give it a try and have been at it for two months straight. Although it's the same three blocks - treadmill, water rowing and weight training, every session is a new adventure and I've never not got a good sweat in.

But more importantly than exercises are the people who staff the place. Initially I had a little hiccup related to payment and thought I was gonna have to haggle back and forth but I was pleasantly surprised and appreciative when all it took was a few text in less than a day to remedy the situation.

The front desk team is always bright and bushy-tailed in the morning when I come in which sets an excellent tone and creates a positive culture.

Most of my classes are with Coach Danielle. She's very intentional about checking in 1:1 and making sure we know what muscles we're working and that we maintain good form with all the exercises. Combined with the monitoring system, it's like having a highly personalized trainer! With all that being said, the difference maker for me is the vibe Coach Danielle creates with her playlist which leans towards the hip-hop side. It definitely sounds/feels like a party and helps get that extra rep/incline/speed in!

This studio is the best of Orange Theory. The best staff. Super friendly. They deserve 10 stars.

I'm a fan! And I'm someone that has worked out my entire life. In fact, the OTF folks in montclair have made me a super fan--and I know a thing or two about that because I ran Marketing for the Golden State Warriors. It's not because the facilities are pristine, or the great location, or even the power of the underlying theory. It is, to me, all about the staff and coaches--those you interact with on a daily basis.

Having extraordinary front staff like Hannah, for example, is one of the most powerful aspects to happiness and retention. Not only is Hannah really good at what she does, she remembers members and greets you by name. This is priceless. The coaches are committed, energetic, and demonstrate a true commitment to the theory and program.

I think there are places in the model that I feel is a little nickel & dime-ing, but I understand the reasoning. As a whole, I am thrilled with the program and my results.

I go to this studio 5-6x a week. I’m sure they’re sick of me by now. The coaches are amazing. I take the 6am class during the week usually, so Coaches Danielle and Kristen are great! I especially love Danielle’s music choice as she is one of the few across mostvstudios who plays primarily hip hop.

The staff is amazing, too! Super friendly and they seem to know everyone by name. They’re also very responsive to my questions and requests I send via phone, text, or on social media.

If you are planning on checking this studio out, keep in mind there is no designated parking lot, so be prepared to look for (and pay for) metered parking. There is also a garage a few blocks away if you’re willing to walk. Just don’t park in the Safeway lot because they will ticket/tow you. Oh, and Starbuck’s is right next door, so be prepared to spend money after class if you don’t have willpower like me.

My only “negative” about this location is the small lobby, so it can feel tight before and after classes. We’ve been able to make due though and I might have even made some new friends because of how intimate the space is!

New to Orangetheory Fitness but this studio has made it an awesome experience. Front desk, sales and coaches have made it a pleasure to join. Well worth the membership.

New and Clean studio. Wish the studio was a little larger (esp. the check-in space) and that they started offering LIFT-45 classes!!! Parking can also be slightly tricky…

However, front staff is great- amicable and welcoming. Greets you by name and remembers preferences/details

As a long time weight lifter and marathoner I was skeptical about joining a group HIIT gym but those doubts were cast aside after a few sessions. Having a coach push me has allowed me to pack in a much better workout in a shorter amount of time. After 25 sessions, going roughly twice a week, I feel like I'm in one of the best shapes of my life (even amid holiday indulgences). The front desk is beyond nice. Hannah usually greets me by name and lets me choose where to start. They remember little things about me and are authentically nice. Even though I live beside the Oakland OTF that is about to open, I will probably still go to this one because of the staff's friendliness. I highly recommend this gym!

Love Alameda an Emeryville studios. This new Montclair studio is closer to home and I love the new equipment. Sadly, front desk staff is really unfriendly, and the coaches I’ve had are just meh. It’s surprising that classes are overbooked and the studio puts off such an air of superiority!. For me it’s worth trekking time to go to a friendly studio with happy helpful people.😊
