The safety of this shopping center is a real concern. Suspicious or questionable individuals cast shadows, especially late in the evening. The other day, I was a victim: this Hispanic-appearing guy in his twenties or thirties, bald or nearly bald-headed, stepped out of his car clutching a baseball bat, then rushed to my car and forced open the door, grabbing my shoulder and trying to drag me out, either to rob me or commit some other crime, plus probably high or wasted. Then he just let go, likely realizing I was driving an old Prius with nothing worth sabotaging or taking. Extra security patrols or a stronger authority presence are direly needed.

Planet Fitness in Downey, CA is my “go to” gym to forget all my aches and pains and exercise all my stress away. The gym personnel are friendly, the bathrooms are clean and the machines are in excellent working order. Love this gym!

I’ve been a member here for a while, but I’m getting more and more frustrated with recurring issues. The power has gone out mid-workout multiple times (including twice this month), which completely disrupts the gym and shuts down some of the equipment. It’s especially discouraging when I’m in the middle of treadmill training for a half marathon and the machine powers off several miles in.

The treadmills are definitely not calibrated correctly — I’ve confirmed some of them can be about a full mile behind in pace. This makes pacing and timing completely unreliable for training, and I’ve mentioned it before but nothing has changed. At this point, it feels like I’m paying for equipment that doesn’t work properly.

This gym can be a great option for someone starting off on their fitness journey, but it might be better to consider other gyms if you’re dedicated to specific fitness goals.

10/2 Update from my last review: The power went out on the machines yesterday for a 3rd time in the last 4 weeks. By now, I’ve spoken to the front desk several times, including speaking directly with a manager. The power and treadmill issues have still not been resolved.

Staff is kind hearted ,but the men's bathroom and showers are absolutely revolting. It's such a shame because I genuinely love attending this gym and have been coming here for about a year now,but I thought I would see at least a little effort or change for once. It's so unfortunate I have to worry about sanitation and bio hazard safety when I utilize the facility. I hope the issue gets resolved or looked over 😔

Update : so its been about 2 months now since I've last written a review. I,ve decided to give this location another try. I noticed the bathroom floors are mopped and countertops wiped down. Thats a plus, but I cant take a shower comfortably because there are bugs crawling on the shower walls and curtains. Im not sure what kind of bugs they are, but I can confirm there are tiny gnats flying around inside the showers. To my understanding there might be a plumbing issue because the showers reek of raw sewage. Yes when I say "raw sewage " I'm referring to the stench of feces. The stench of literal feces is circulating within the shower area and inside the showers. I honestly just hope this issue gets fixed because like ive said before, I enjoy coming to this gym , but not under these circumstances.

I'll keep you guys updated . Unfortunately I was in a rush and did not have time to snap pictures of the bugs crawling within the showers . Next time I will make the time .

This planet fitness hires people to discriminate against you. If your car looks less classy than the ones they prefer in their lot they will leave an official note on it that says 1 hour parking only or you will be towed. Even if you’re inside the gym working your little heart out. So what they’re saying really is if you look like you have less money than me then don’t come here. Hopefully someone sues you for this practice.

This Planet Fitness location in Downey really needs some attention. The women’s restroom often has no toilet paper, and the sinks don’t work — which is frustrating and honestly unhygienic. Some of the equipment is outdated or worn down, and it wouldn’t hurt to replace a few machines with newer models.

I’ve been to other Planet Fitness locations that are better maintained and offer a more complete setup, so I know this one has room for improvement. It’s disappointing because the potential is there, but the upkeep and overall quality just aren’t matching up right now.

Downey Planet Fitness has hired employees with great people skills. I have been at gyms where there isn’t even eye contact when you check in. I have a compliant about an employee who works there Tuesday’s at 4:30pm. She was an utterly rude person to speak to. She scoffed as I was exiting because she made both I and my handicapped uncomfortable because of her unjustified anger towards us regarding the guest pass. She suggested I end my membership but I’m pretty sure neither the owner nor PF actually condones hateful behavior towards guests.

Won’t be coming to this location until I get an apology from the employee or the owner of this location. I live down the street, and I’m fairly disappointed that this is how I get treated in my own community, especially handicapped individuals.

I love this gym. I’ve been coming here for about 3 years already and have no complains until now. The new girl that was hired that’s there at 4am is never around when I need help. She’s never around when I need to book a massage chair or bed. She’s either hiding or working out on the clock or outside talking to people and never inside. I've been coming here since December 2023, so I can truly say I like this location and the staff are always pleasant. It's been fun to see all the regulars make progress on their various health goals as well. They tend to fix any equipment quickly and have lots of options for both weights and cardio. Only time it isn't as joyful is during summer when all the youngsters come and hoard equipment. However, I try to tell myself it's better they are at the gym working out, than out on the streets, getting into trouble. So I just deal with it. Overall, I like the place.

Also: I read a review that complained about the Hispanic music that's played. The rare days I choose to go to the gym twice a day (for steps), I have noticed I don't even need my earphones because the Latin tunes are so good in the morning/afternoon! The 80's and 90's Latin hits are timeless. To each their own I guess.

Staff if very friendly. PF has this deal where if you're not a member, you pay $20 and you can go as many times in a 24 hour period as you'd like. I was working out of town for a few days, so it worked for me. I've taken advantage of this deal twice, two different locations.
Plenty of cardio machines. There are quite a few weight machines as well. But when it comes to free weights, the area is tight, with not much to choose from. I felt like everyone was on top of each other. And at one location, people hord dumb bells(and the location only has one set of each weight). They don't have any Hammer Strength weight machines.
All in all, I was able to get in a decent workout with what was available. But on some instances, I had to wait for the weights or machine to become available

I like going to at 11 pm when the crowd has died down. The planet fitness in Alhambra is bigger than the one in South Gate & Downey. The staff is friendly. One thing I don't like about Planet Fitness is that they have no free weights. The only free weight is the dumbbells.

I used to come here alot. The classes and personal training are really cool for beginners and advance fitness levels. I canceled my account and whoever I did it with did not complete it. I hsd a bunch of outstanding balance and late fees. Spoke with Ari at front desk and she was so helpful and took care of me. I will be joining again soon. Also spoke with Jacob on the phone before I dealt with Ari, he was very helpful and friendly as well. This gym is way worth the price. Thanks again for being kind and taking care of your people. 1000% would NOT recommend this place! The staff sold the Black Card Membership to my wife and I. They said it wouldn’t be a problem if I would come as a guest without my wife. After two weeks going to the gym as a guest now it’s a problem! I couldn’t be there without her and yet I was able to cancel my wife’s account without her even being there? Not only is the staff undertrained the place is dusty and dirty. Don’t believe me try looking around the machines and you’ll see what I’m talking about. I’m glad I canceled.

I have joined Downey PF about three weeks ago because had serious issue with bending my knee and poor strength of my legs after TKR surgery. Initially had extreme difficulty on bike at setting 24 where I was not able to bend my knee, now miraculously after three weeks, I am freely able to exercise on bike at 16 setting. Very special thanks to Matt at PF who guided me on exercise program using various equipment. Excellent care taken by him. Also facility has all the equipment and in excellent working condition. Staff is always there to help. I am so glad that I joined PF.
