I initially joined Planet Fitness several years ago in St. Louis, MO. I was regularly billed $26.95 per month to my credit card for a Black Card membership. I moved back to SF full-time in August and switched my membership to the Montgomery St. location. In October, I see a Planet Fitness charge for $36.95. I inquire why I was charged $10 more this month and am told it was a 'late fee'. I have never been late with a payment because I signed up for recurring billing with my credit card. 4 visits to the gym to talk to the front desk staff with no follow-up or phone call, I am told I am being charged a $10 late fee because I am paying with my credit card, not my bank account. I was never told this when I switched PF gyms online. I decide to cancel my membership, but before I am allowed to, I am forced to pay another month and another 'late fee'. I just joined Fitness SF, and that was one of the best decisions I've ever made! This SF Planet Fitness sucks. I had a much better experience at the PF locations I visited in St. Louis. They are bigger, friendlier, cleaner, air conditioned, less crowded and have free parking.

Not a good experience. I just recently visited San Francisco from Florida and stayed near this gym. I've never visited a Planet fitness and was looking forward to using the free visit you get when you download the PF app which I did. I walked in on a Thursday afternoon and presented the free day pass to them from their app and was flat out told "No, We Don't Accept It". You can workout here, but it will cost you $20 for the day!!! What kind of scam is this location running? This place was a joke!!! I can see why it doesn't get very good reviews... I was glad to get back to my home gym in Florida which isn't Planet fitness. I can definitely say Planet fitness did not make a good impression on me and will never waste my time in the future to visit any Planet Fitness!!!

Watch out for these scammers! They’ll get you with the promise of being the gym with the lowest monthly fee but what they won’t tell you is that on your second month, after charging you for your monthly fee of course, they’ll make you pay an annual fee of $60 and won’t let you in until you pay it but will keep charging every month. Plus the workers there always have an attitude when you want to ask anything the only thing they know is “go to your app”, there only role there is to make sure you pay all of your fees or impede access, not to help.

There are comments on here dating back to 7 years ago complaining about how unreasonably hot it is in this gym… seems like nothing has been done other than replies on here saying to “email management”. I’m here today on 9/17/25 and it’s SO HOT - I’m sweating harder than I ever have while working out you’d think they had the heat on. The space is hot and cramped. I’ve been to many PF locations to which I’ve had no complaints and unfortunately this is the worst one I’ve been to. It’s also cramped and crowded with too few machines. Won’t be returning

If your gym allows people to dump their towel, clothes and water bottle on the fly machine and disappear for 30+ minutes to do other exercises, you’re failing your members. This isn’t a private home gym, it’s a shared space, and staff need to start treating it like one.
Watching someone claim a machine, walk off to do glutes, abs and come back like they still “own” it is frustrating beyond words. It’s not “supersetting”- it’s selfish entitled time-wasting and shows a complete lack of gym etiquette and basic awareness.
This kind of entitled idiocy shouldn’t be ignored.
Staff need to step in and stop people from reserving equipment with their stuff like it’s a beach chair in Cancun. If someone’s not actively using a machine - it’s available. Period. No excuses.

The other day I was working out here and a guy was using 4 pieces of equipment at once… I asked to use one and he told me he was using them all - which is against the “no super setting” rule posted in the weight area. He told me to stop telling him what to do. I said I wasn’t telling him what to do, that the club was and he then said he would beat me up if I didn’t “get out of his face”.

Reported him to the club manager and they offered me a Gatorade for my trouble.

Worst PF I’ve been to in the country. Small worn out space, only 1 of each type of weight machine, attachments that look like they were thrown away by another PF. It’s obvious that the owner puts no time or money into keeping the place up. Perhaps it’s time to make PF a judgement zone. Spare me the response.

Small and populated, but that is tolerable. I moved and need to switch my home Gym. When I spoke to other locations, they said I could ask my home gym (this location) to make the switch for me. When I spoke to the manager Jay? He insisted that he couldn't do it and kept asking me to go online. I said, fine can you send me an email just so I have an easier time following instructions (even if it's basic. At this point I didn't know how difficult it was). He refused to email me or help me further with this process and rudely said something along the lines of, "There is nothing to send you besides what I am telling you what to do right now" I repeatedly asked if he could send me an email with the verbal instructions and he ultimately was NOT helpful at ALL! Glad I am making the switch, dodged a bullet!

This has been my gym for 2 years and since the normal morning guy left it has been a mess. Just waited 1 hour for the gym to open and no one showed up. This is the 3rd time in a month. The staff is just ughhhhhhh. I look over it because of the location and price but I will be canceling.

They started only allowing teens with the summer pass to only go on certain days without sending out a email or text message or anything. I came all the way from bayview to clear my mind and I was already having a horrible morning and as soon as I got there I was told they only allowed teens to come on certain days which I did not know and it took me a hour to get back home and I didn't even get to workout. I cried on the way home and this really ruined my day. If you're going to do this, please atleast send out a email or something to let us know because this really hurt alot.

some machines and walkways are a little awkward and place is an accessibility nightmare (i love doing the bicep curl machine and having people run into me when they walk up the stairs..) but ultimately it’s a great spot with plenty of fitness equipment.

I am writing to formally express my disappointment regarding my recent visit to Planet Fitness. This was by far the worst experience I have ever had at a gym.

The first issue arose when I attempted to check in. My phone was dead, so I left it in my car to charge and instead brought my ID, requesting that Brandy look up my account using my phone number. Initially, she claimed she could not locate my account. I repeatedly asked what other options were available, but I was given little assistance. After waiting for 30 minutes while Brandy called the Milpitas location to confirm my phone number, she finally allowed me entry. This delay was entirely unnecessary and unacceptable.

However, the most serious and deeply upsetting incident occurred while I was taking a shower. In the middle of washing myself, staff member Denise abruptly opened my shower curtain fully, exposing me to the entire locker room without any warning. This was an incredibly humiliating and violating experience. Not only did she fail to show any remorse, but when I later asked for her name to file a formal complaint, she responded with even more hostility.

I feel completely disrespected and violated by this incident. There is no justification for a staff member to invade a guest’s privacy in such an inappropriate manner. I strongly urge you to address this matter seriously, as no member should ever have to endure such an invasion of privacy at your facility. Denise’s actions warrant immediate disciplinary action to prevent this from happening to anyone else.

I expect a prompt response regarding how this issue will be addressed. Please contact me at your earliest convenience.

Just started here a month ago, and I'm already having problems. One staff member came up to me and told me to not stay past the closing time. It was a holiday and I didn't know the holiday hours. I didn't check the app or the door, as I just wanted to work out and shower. I didn't get to shower. The woman was rude and continued to argue with me. I told her that she didn't inform me of the holiday hours; she had walked off when I checked in, so she didn't check my face on the computer monitor. Not very professional. Already, I see your rude staff and I will not pay if this continues. I will document every occurrence and if it continues, I will file a lawsuit. Respect your patrons!

I went for a tour, the staff led me around talking a lot about pricing, then at the end said I could try out the space. A few minutes later, the manager walked up to me, said I wasn’t allowed to try the equipment without signing up. I told him his colleague said it was fine, he said he just asked her and I was lying, and said I needed to sign up or leave before escorting me out. First time I’ve ever been kicked out of a gym.

It has been a week since I started trying to transfer my membership from the San Francisco location to San Pablo, but a technical error keeps occurring. I have also sought assistance from the staff on-site multiple times, and despite their efforts and attempts to contact the manager, no solution has been found, and I have not received any response from the manager.

This lack of responsiveness is disappointing, and I am seriously considering canceling my membership to explore other options. I hope my comment will draw the attention of management to resolve this situation promptly.

After 2 years of being a member of Planet Fitness, and never missing a payment, I get denied access all of a sudden due to some vague payment confusion between this franchise and my third-party provider. Both of these parties refuse to talk to each other, instead demanding a call from the other side, and im here stuck in the middle with no hope of resolution. This franchise won’t let me in even tho I have proof that I am up to date, while we sort this issue out. On top of this they refuse to let me speak to the manager Tarjay, and put a note on my file that I was angry and aggressive just because I’m slightly frustrated about the situation. They never gave me any advance notice about this issue, so now I’ve wasted time travelling downtown on two occasions just to be turned away even though my payments are completely up to date. The ceilings are so low, the heat from everyone working out and sweating creates an odor. They don’t have enough fans. The layout of the machines is really awkward. As I tried to get into my workout zone and decided to give them a chance, I start using the stair master and suddenly realize that there’s a security camera pointed right in my face. The ceiling are SO LOW the camera is right by the machines recording you. That did it. Worst experience at a PF because of the facilities. The employees are nice and helpful.

This is the smallest PF I've ever been to but it is packed with every machine you need. They keep it very clean and the bathrooms were very clean. I only wish they would spend the money and get an A/C. The upstairs was very hot even with fans. It would be unbearable on a really hot day. Very friendly staff.

Staff was nice. People working out seem to be getting along. Had a quick workout here. Can say this isn’t my favorite location. I couldn’t do muscle ups because of the low ceiling. Seems to be missing some work equipment based on my original planet fitness.
Has signs in the locker room about theft so it seems not so safe there for your belongings in the locker room.
Overall I was still able to workout and was greeted coming in and leaving.
For me it’s the low ceilings that make me feel there isn’t enough ventilation and me searching for my machine that I normally use at my pf.

Worst customer service ever! My son is a guest of my PF Black Card. He has gone in on his own before. Today I received a call from an employee named Corinne saying that he couldn’t get in on his own. I told her PF website says guests can go on their own. She rudely said that was wrong. I asked if it was because of his age and she said no. She wouldn’t transfer me to Supervisor and refused to give me her name at first. Then she cancelled my account for daring to question her! To top it all off, she threatened my son saying she would call the Police. She also told me on the phone that she had called the Police before she rudely hung up again. I would like PF Corporate to address this please.

Update: This vindictive employee, Corinne Watkins, cancelled my membership citing Policy Violation and forged my signature on the document. All because my son tried to go in on his own with his Guest Pass.

7/31/24 Update: Received email from Manager, Stella Roberts, with canned reasons why they can cancel your membership including poor treatment of staff and not following their policies. I guess she just accepts whatever her staff tells her. She can’t entertain the idea that her staff could be rude and unprofessional. Past reviews show that Corinne Watkins has a history of rude customer service. Skip this location if you can.

The equipment is good and varied, although my morning Planet Fitness workouts are crowded (and hot because of poor ventilation). Signs are posted throughout the gym stating no cell phone or texting while on the machines, but sadly this rule is both ignored and not enforced which often means you can't use a machine because someone else is on it just using their phone. With all that being said, I was flabbergasted when an employee told me I was not sufficiently gentle with the weights on machines. It appears that because texting doesn't harm equipment is okay while using a machine might not. I have been going to various gyms for more than 40 years, the most recent is Planet Fitness, and I have never before been criticized.

I just had an employee bang on my tanning door and she turned off my tanning booth saying I wasn’t suppose to tan right now. I just got here and I checked in and then I reserved the tanning booth and the time slot was available so I walked right over here and I got into the tanning booth because the booth was available and I reserved it.

This location used to be on Sansome in SF and the only improvement since they moved to Montgomery is that it’s slightly (although slightly is an understatement) bigger and now has hydro massage beds….and it’s still the worst Planet Fitness I’ve been to in the US (I travel so I visit other locations frequently). If you’re curious, here’s why:

1) there are many “club rules” for members but hardly any are enforced. I’m actually here now and it’s packed. There is someone next to me with a duffle bag on the floor where others can trip and super setting so using multiple pieces (dumbbells, cable machine, and bench) of equipment at once while super busy and others are clearly waiting…..yet I’ve overheard staff telling another member to get off the phone in the locker room as if that is high priority.

2) almost every week day after 5, there is a group that often congregates around one of only two smith machines. They come in a group of at least four or more and trade off with each other. This makes the machines they’re using unusable to anyone outside of their group for an extended time, sometimes this is hours. I’ve given up on my exercise routines because this group has taken over machines. Now I try to go as soon as the gym opens solely to avoid this group.

3) There isn’t enough equipment or space for the amount of people. Like everywhere else in a City, it’s crowded and the space chosen for a gym is truly appalling. There are only two smith machines, which is the most sought after equipment and you can bet money it will be taken if you go during prime hours. They also don’t have a lot of equipment other PF locations have (no kettle bells, step up, ropes, etc)

4) I’m sure there are other PF locations that do, but this is the only location I’ve been to that is not 24 hours. Because this is already a tiny space that is frequently busy, especially after 5pm, this makes it even harder to get your workout routine in.

5) They close for every.single.protest. I get looking out for employee safety, but they have closed when only 20 people were a block away. This happened several days in a row during some protests recently

6) I’ve seen roaches in other downtown locations, but I see at least one every visit to this PF.

7) The tanning beds (especially the lay down/flat bed) is absolutely the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen. You can see dirt, grime, and a plethora of dead bugs trapped between the bulbs and plexiglass. These beds have removable plexiglass and there is legitimately no reason for it to be gross. It’s truly a health hazard.

8) All talk, no action. I see responses to reviews asking people to speak with management, although this seems to be a generic response that is copy and pasted across many reviews which shows me that there is no genuine interest/concern from management to begin with. Normal management heavily monitors reviews to take into consideration and improve. Here I’m seeing reviews from weeks ago, months ago and a few even a year or more ago complaining about all the same things I’ve mentioned here. It’s not shocking that things have not improved, just disappointing.

9) As others mentioned, no ventilation. This was an issue at their old location and people complained about it, but it seems this was not something to consider when selecting the location on Montgomery. It’s also hotter than the old location because there are no windows to open. To be fair, it’s common for homes and businesses to not have AC, but this is the first SF gym I’ve been to that has no AC and now it doesn’t even have natural ventilation that helped their old location a little.

Because this is San Francisco and everything is already expensive, this is seen as a very affordable gym…but it feels like they’re exploiting the low costs in exchange for poor amenities. I hate that this is the location I have to call my home gym and I only look forward to Planet Fitness when I go to any location other than the San Francisco location.

The only redeeming quality about this gym is the staff is so nice and welcoming.

Stopped by while traveling away from home. Definitely the smallest PF I've seen, but they do have at least one of every machine and plenty of cardio machines. Feels almost like a hotel gym. Staff were friendly! I called ahead and was advised there was no parking - they suggested I take public transit. Thankfully my hotel was walking distance, but this may be an issue for others! Some reviews mentioned no ventilation, so I was prepared for a slightly swampier experience. It's in a repurposed space (low ceilings, tight layout) and is definitely very humid, but I did feel the vent above me kick on and deliver some cool dry air, so they do seem to be using the ventilation system finally! The gym and bathrooms were very clean. Perfectly fine, smaller PF for anyone visiting!

Great place for a workout, whether you're a beginner or at an intermediate level. The friendly staff keeps the machines clean, and it's located in an upscale area next to the Galleria. Parking can be a bit tricky on busy days. While the bathrooms are kept mostly clean, I avoid it in general. Mug water fill up dispenser too! Overall, 9/10.

Today is Friday I've made it to the gym, I did my thirty minutes a day, lifted weights for my back legs. Everytime I walk in I am greeted. Many different machines to choose this gym has two floors bottom and second. A special area is designed for thirty minutes only. I have basic membership, however they have more perks for other members.they have a massage chair and spray on tanning booth for membership that's premium.

Huge ventilation problem. You can most definitely smell what your gym buddies are cooking up. They need to have the AC cranked 24/7 to remedy their odor issue. Front desk people are very casual. Very. You don’t have to sell it to me I’m already here but damn exhibit a modicum of decorum. With that being said all the machines are here whatever.

How do they still not use their overhead ventilation system. It’s 90 degrees in here and not hot outside. Going to faint in this literal bank turned gym that just buys some Amazon fans and goes that’ll be fine to cool off an entire gym of people trying to work out. Every time I am at this gym there is a gentleman walking around carrying signs with religious propaganda on them. He will even carry them into the workout area. I’m sorry but I am at the gym to workout not have religious views thrown in my face. I also see him wearing tshirts with slogans like “Jesus saves”. This should not be allowed. If that’s his views it’s fine but I don’t want to see it thrown in my face when I follow another religion. Also no AC so no ventilation, the gym smells.

Compact, 2-story gym in FiDi. Staff are chill and price is good, though lifting area can get crowded and Sunday hours are limited.

I would like to see the gym reallocate some floor space from cardio to lifting/stretching (there's a random elliptical room that's a good candidate) and have 9-5PM Sunday hours.

Clean, excellent, professional staff that actually treats you as a customer (unlike 24 Hour Fitness). There is a good variety of machines. But the hours could be better. They open at 7 a.m. Many of us like to workout before work and this precludes that. They're open pretty late...to 9 p.m. I think 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. would be better. Then on Sundays, they're only open to 3 p.m. and open at 9. I think 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. would be better. There is one in Oakland that's open 24 hours but that's a 35 minute Bart Ride away. I don't mind this because I am training for a summer marathon, but there's no AC and poor ventilation...it gets pretty warm inside.

They closed to early 3pm on Sunday and 5pm on Saturday, not used full. Maybe I’m gonna cancel my membership and get another company gym.
The guy claimed as manager at front desk so rude and not helpful. He didn’t listen to me or proof my request. This location also always run out spray sanitizers or towels, they didn’t do they job properly. 👎👎👎👎👎

It's clean, which is nice, but that's only because the city is so nasty. This place is way too small. Only 1 of the weight sets, so it's hard to get what you need. The men here stare and it's comfortable to workout because of that. Bathrooms/locker rooms were nice but no soap! I would not recommend this gym :(

As others mentioned, there is no AC, so it might not be as comfortable as other gyms. I could not register online, because they don't like when you are using alias emails. Overall, I might change my mind and try to do it again in person. I strongly encourage the owner to review gyms security policies and begin to respect people's choice to have privacy.

We have a black card membership at Planet Fitness and have used these gyms throughout much of the country. They are consistently good and a good value for us. Sure some are better maintained than others, but we are always happy with the overall experience.

UPDATE TWO Down to 2 stars! I have to cancel my membership. The bankers hours just don't cut it. REALY LOOK AT THOSE HOURS BEFORE YOU SIGN UP. THEY NEVER WENT BACK TO NOMRAL HOURS AFTER COVID. Saturday and Sunday they close at 3pm! NINE on weekdays! It's crowded because they have no hours so a normal workout takes way too long. What is also problematic is that the people using the equipment do not know how to share. They do not let anyone alternate sets. Instead they sit on the equipment looking at the dang phone instead of getting up and letting someone else do a set while they rest between sets! It seems San Francisco does not get gym etiquette and Planet Fitness does not help teach people to share. Sitting on the equipment looking at your phone is a rookie selfish move. And it is the norm at Planet Fitness. That coupled with the bankers hours makes it impossible to get a good workout in. The waiting to use equipment makes the work out a good 45 minutes to an hour (!!) longer than needed. In less than a year my review went from 5 to 1 star. Very disappointing. CHECK THE HOURS BEFORE SIGNING UP! They're impossible!

Updated from 5 to 4 stars because I am finding it very difficult to fit working out into my schedule because the hours are so limited. 7 am to 9 pm is just not sufficient, and some days the hours are even less. This really need to change.

I really like the equipment and my perks. Not too crowded lately either. Hours are limited on weekends, but it's clean and friendly.

It's unbelievable that a gym that occupies a space as big as the one on 417 Montgomery Rd in SF doesn't have an AC? they have these fans placed strategically at different angles that doesn't cover nor help the sweltering heat in the gym. This is 2023 for goodness sake, with climate change, depletion of ozone layers and extreme heat, there's no central AC? This makes working out here uncomfortable. I don't know if this is deliberate or by design because I've been to other PF outlets in and out of state that has AC.

This place was honestly so much better when it was located on Samson Street. At the new location on Montgomery the machines are old and ran down they have no music playing they're not enough sanitations. Customer service is hardly there, there's 1 black girl at the front desk and she's overwhelmed and overall this was not the ideal trip to the gym. It seems the franchise owner is more interested in keeping the business in the financial district, instead of investing in the business. Please find a cheaper location to pay rent so that you can hire some staff and buy new machines because honestly this location REALLY makes planet fitness LOOK BADD. I go to the location on Market Street in Oakland, I go to the Daly City location, and I've also gone to the location in San Bruno at the mall; so I do know what I'm talking about.

It is a small to mid-size gym, it is relatively clean and it has all the equipment that I need. The staff is friendly and the manager makes a frequent inspection to make sure everything is right. The only complaint is the lack of hot water at the sink. I don’t have time to go back to my place to shower and shave. Hot or warm water is the minimum requirement for any gym.

The most underwhelming PF I’ve ever visited. The free weight section is so cramped and busy (even during the day). It’s uncomfortable to work out when you’re stepping over people. They seem to have plenty of cardio equipment but they’re missing some of the PF signature machines. If you’re in SF and you need somewhere to work out, this club isn’t a terrible option, but I wouldn’t choose to work out here.

You can’t beat the price but it’s the only reason to come here. The weight section is too limited and cramped. June was aweful because the place was overrun with high school kids who can come for free. It can get really hot in that small space. They did listen to my request for more fans which is a plus. I will stay because the price just beats anywhere else and I’m able to do a decent workout most days. But you have to choose your hours carefully. Sometimes you want to run away screaming because everything is occupied. The etiquette of other people regarding hogging multiple machines/dumbbells/benches is pretty bad here as well.

Good gym the only down side is they're not open 24hrs also the shower curtains are very small so when you shower it only covers a little bit more than half. It's a bit uncomfortable. Also they allow Women dress as tomboy into the men lockers which is a big no no.

I believe the place could benefit from improving their hiring practices as some of the staff members are not very welcoming. It seems to be inconsistent, as sometimes I have encountered front counter staff who simply stare when I greet them and check in. This lack of responsiveness is disappointing. In particular, there is one individual who comes across as more of a bouncer than a helpful staff member, and their behavior has been rude . On a positive note, the place is generally kept clean, although the limited space can be challenging. However, if you know how to navigate efficiently, you can minimize waiting time for machines. Personally, I prefer to keep moving and make the most of my workout

This gym is clean and orderly which is a big deal for me! It has enough equipment to keep busy and it’s equipment is superior to other Planet Fitnesses. It’s my 2nd favorite behind the one in Walnut Creek! It’s well located in the financial district and for those of us who travel by BART and on foot it’s very convenient.

The employees are helpful and responsive. Some folks have a problem with the black card access but these are the perks of membership! So if you want a good experience be sure to upgrade your membership today and partake in in that gym-tactic goodness.

While I enjoyed the gym itself I must change my review from a 5star to a 2 star. Two late months was all it took me to go from a credit score of 720 down to 666. I cannot in good conscience recommend planet fitness and will be switching to the annual membership at 24 hour fitness which is not much more expensive than the 25$ I was spending here. The employees at the gym here have been nothing but good to me but unfortunately the higher ups are set in their ways. It's some shady stuff that is overlooked in the beginning and only required time to expose the frightening tactics that can ruin a person financially. I highly recommend dropping your membership at planet fitness and finding an alternative. Financial security is more important than saving 20$ a month.

Just had my wallet stolen from my locker . I had a pad lock on it and the person busted it. I was asked to fill out a form to retrieve the video for SFPD by staff. The staff told me it happened earlier in the day. So no one is monitoring who is in the locker room . I had a gut feeling when I saw a girl just hanging out in the womens locker room with no reason to be there. I was told by others that alot of theft has happened at this location. I dont recommend bring your wallet or personal belongings in this gym .

Zero parking. $3.50 hr if you do. Only allows black card members, so if you're standard $10 members they turn you away. Also you can never bring a guest. This is not the principle of why PF was made. They promote $10 membership and bring a guest frequently.
