A Masterclass in How to Lose a Customer, Taught by the Manager

I am writing this review to provide a clear and factual account of our experience at the Planet Fitness in Gould Shopping Center, in the hopes of warning other potential members about this location’s management and policies.

My girlfriend and I decided to sign up for a Black Card membership under her name. We made this decision together, in front of the sales staff, who were fully aware that we were a couple and I would be the guest. The sales pitch focused heavily on the premium perks, including the spa, but at no point was it proactively and clearly stated that these specific amenities are exclusively for the primary cardholder. This critical detail was omitted.

The issue arose when I, the person who the spa was intended for, attempted to use the facility. After being denied by the front desk, we spoke directly with a person who identified themselves as the manager. We explained the situation and attempted to resolve it in what we believe were two very reasonable ways:
1. A Common-Sense Solution: With my girlfriend (the cardholder) present and giving her explicit permission, we asked the manager if I could use the spa in her stead, especially as she does not use it. The manager's response was a rigid "no."
2. An Administrative Solution: We then asked the manager if the membership could simply be transferred to my name—a simple data entry change that would cost the business nothing and align the membership with the user. This was also met with a firm "no" from the manager.

The only "solution" the manager provided was for me to purchase an entirely new, separate Black Card membership.

To be perfectly clear, my issue is not with the existence of a corporate policy. My issue is with this location's business ethics and, most importantly, its management's customer service philosophy:

Lack of Sales Transparency: The sales process felt intentionally vague. A competent and ethical salesperson should have a duty to clarify such a significant restriction. That this ambiguity is later weaponized by management to upsell is deeply concerning.

Absence of Goodwill from Leadership: When a customer has a problem stemming directly from an ambiguity in the sales process, a good manager seeks a solution. The manager here chose to hide behind policy, demonstrating zero flexibility or desire to retain customer loyalty. They preferred to lose a customer (and receive this review) rather than make a simple, no-cost administrative change that was well within their power.

Aggressive Upselling as a "Solution" from Management: When a manager's only answer to a customer's problem is "spend more money," it's not customer service. It is an insult to the customer's intelligence and confirms that the priority, from the top down at this location, is revenue, not member satisfaction.

And to the manager I spoke with—who will likely be the one replying to this with a standard apology about my "experience" and a quote from the policy handbook: Please understand that your official response will only reinforce the point. We did not ask for the rules to be broken; we asked you for a fair solution to a problem your team created. You had a clear choice between enforcing a rule and serving a customer. You chose the rule.

[Advice for Prospective Members]: Do not assume anything. Question every single detail. Be aware that even at the management level, this location has demonstrated that it will prioritize a rigid interpretation of policy over common sense and customer satisfaction, even when they are at fault for the initial confusion.

I went to Planet Fitness today it was my first time there since I moved from a different state. In the past I had a membership at Planet Fitness, never had I ever gone to a location where there is no soap available in the locker room area. I asked them about it myself their response was, if we provide soap for the guests, we will go broke . This is the dumbest thing that I have ever heard, if they are charging for a gym membership. They can at least provide one with that this is ridiculous, I will probably will be cancelling my membership with them& go somewhere else

Love this gym from 4am-6am
Empty clean and everyone has gym etiquette when it comes to the machines. Staff is friendly early morning and at evening always a hello and goodbye. The only issue I have is the 30 min workout area not being enforced and properly not being used during the night from 6pm-10pm. Makes my “quick” workout turn into an hour long session. Just a fyi if you like to use that area for its purpose, it won’t happen at night. Just let a staff know and hopes they will monitor that more

February 4, 2025 update: changing from 4 to 5 star. Consistently the cleanest gym of all. -Wednesday November 6,
2024 5 am it was the cleanest I've ever seen! Prior to that it's been hit and miss for cleanliness between just ok and looking like someone T.P.'ed the locker room with used Q-Tips on the floor and bench seats. I sure hope the gentleman working that shift sticks around for the long haul.

I can highly recommend Planet Fitness on 1035 E Capitol Expy. San Jose, Ca. for their very helpful, welcoming, and friendly support, for their spotlessly clean gym & showers, & for their great value charging only $10 a month. I am 82 years old & on a very tight budget. Erica, my training instructor is not only an incredible & knowledgeable trainer, but this service is also free at Planet Fitness, so I am able to sign up to see her several times each week.
Planet Fitness really is fantastic, & I feel very lucky to be able to be part of such a great organization.

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my frustration regarding an ongoing issue at the Planet Fitness location in Gould Plaza, San Jose, CA. As a loyal member who values the inclusive and supportive atmosphere your gym promotes, I am disappointed with the lack of enforcement regarding the 30-minute workout stations.

Despite the clear policy stating that "Planet Fitness does not set time limits on any piece of cardio, functional, or strength training equipment, with the exception of equipment located in the 30-Minute Express Circuit," I have consistently observed members ignoring this rule. Many individuals remain at the 30-minute stations for longer periods, often exceeding the time limit and using multiple stations, which disrupts the flow of my workout and those of others.

I have attempted to address this issue by politely asking fellow members to allow me to use the stations as per the rules. Unfortunately, many have refused to move, and this has been a persistent challenge during my visits.

When I brought this concern to the attention of the front desk staff, a few were kind enough to issue warnings. However, during my recent visit, I spoke with a staff member named Josh, who informed me that he could not enforce the 30-minute rule. He claimed there was nothing in the policy to support such enforcement, which I find concerning, especially given the clear guidelines that exist.

It is disheartening to see rules meant to create a fair and efficient workout environment not being upheld. I believe that effective management of these guidelines is crucial for all members to enjoy their experience at Planet Fitness.

I kindly request that you address this situation and reinforce the importance of adhering to the 30-minute rule. Regular monitoring and enforcement would greatly enhance the experience for all members and ensure a respectful workout environment.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to seeing positive changes and hope to continue my membership with Planet Fitness with a renewed sense of community and respect.

I really like this location but the regular standup tanning bed is always disgusting. This is the second time I had to wipe off someone’s snot inside the bed and it looks like people are spraying oil in there too (which doesn’t come off with the spray provided so how we are supposed to “wipe it down” idk).

Please check the rooms and beds daily (including opening the doors on the standup beds, that’s where people like to wipe their snot 🤢🤢)

That being said this is still my favorite location and I will add back some stars if I see improvement.

I went on Mother's Day for the first time with my daughter 😄. Very spacious and hardly anyone was there. Unfortunately I didn't know how to start the machines, the Emachines that you have to start working on and then the screen goes on, lol while I was confused as hell and a gym bro was laughing at me trying to figure it out, I went to the front desk and the employee told me how to start the machines up, I was very grateful. Brand new gym! Super clean and not too crowded. Bathrooms are always well maintained and I haven’t seen any broken equipment which is more than I can say for other more expensive gyms. Lots of parking and the lot feels very safe. Staff is super friendly and helpful. The black card membership is totally worth it because you can bring in a guest with you and it gives you access to their spa which has hydro massagers, massage chairs and tanning beds. They even have a meditation pod where you can relax! And they’re open 24hours so you never feel rushed to finish your workout which is perfect for a night owl like me. Totally worth the $25 a month!
