My first visit was alright. The class was crowded and I could not properly hear or understand the instructor. Besides, there was no AC, it was hot and stuffy in the gym.

Michael and Jared is the best. They are so helpful to me as a newbie at working out in form correction and encouragement. Although this is a group workout class, they always make sure pay attention and help out each and everyone who needed help. I can visibly see that I am getting stronger in just 2 months of training with them. My fav gym in sf now!

I went to other 2 CrossFits in SF to see which one is more convenient for me since I am a beginner and I felt no support and they were not warm or welcoming people, I felt lost as a beginner. Instead, today was my first day trying P13, Jared was so nice, he was even about to start the class and took a moment to help me out and welcome me, he paid attention if I was doing well and helped me out which is what I need because when you’re new at something, you feel kinda lost but he was good at explaining again the exercise. He is a good instructor and I like that he took a moment to meet me. Please keep it like that, nice, supportive and friendly so beginners don’t feel lost when working out. Thanks Jared!

Jared and Michael are wonderful coaches. As an example, they know * every * member by name! The workouts are hard but safe and the coaches provide lots of supervision. It’s an inclusive place, with an impressive (and inspiring!) diversity in gender, age, and fitness levels. If you’re on the fence, drop in for a workout! You won’t regret it.

Best strength-training workout class in the city! The trainers, Jared and Michael, are super friendly and make time to offer one on one adjustments and coaching, even when it is a full class. Therefore, the class (although tough!) is very tailorable to be beginner friendly, but also great for people that want to lift heavy. I always leave knowing that I’ll be sore the next day, but feeling accomplished as well.

I have been going to P13 for almost 2 years now, and it’s truly one of my highlights of living in SF. The trainers, community, and workouts are all top notch. Michael and Jared are both very caring and take the time to get to know everyone who walks through the door and keep track of any injuries or areas of difficulty that they are working on. They have a great understanding of proper form and are always happy to provide form checks, answer questions, and provide modifications for exercises. The workouts are well structured and comprehensive and always leave me tired and happy!

The community has also been an unexpected blessing of joining P13. All the members are welcoming, kind, and fun to be around. It’s a safe and accepting environment regardless of what phase you are at in your fitness journey, and people genuinely want the best for each other. On days when the class is larger, you’ll work with a partner for barbell movements, and on Saturdays there is team conditioning, both of which are great ways to get to know people. I have ended up making close friends at the gym and know others have too. Working out with the group and chatting with people is always one of the best parts of my day.

Project 13 is wonderful. I just started in January. The coaches are awesome and super helpful. It is a class but feels more like personal training as the coaches will pay attention to each member individually and provide modifications as needed. Fun, friendly members, amazing coaches, great start to the day! 🤩

I've been a member at P13 since 2019 and it's been a pleasure. I came in with little to no experience with strength training/lifting and immediately felt comfortable with the staff and the members.

P13 is truly a great gym for people at all stages of their fitness and strength journeys. My brother is a D1 athlete and goes to the same workouts that I do and each of us have modifications that the trainers have specifically designed for our individual needs.

If you're looking to gain some variance in your guided strength programming or interested in starting a journey in strength training, P13 is the place for you.

Note: P13 is a really safe environment for women as well -- everyone is really supportive and there's a great community of people working towards being their healthiest and strongest selves. There's also a great social aspect where members go on hikes, happy hours, and other adventures together. I've made a lot of life long friends at P13 and will continue to be a member as long as I live in SF.

The gym is awesome. The structure of the classes take away any apprehension of working out. You show up and do the workout provided, much like a sports practice.. The coaches are incredible. they make everyone feel welcome. It’s a great place to enhance your social circle as well - they do happy hours every Wednesday and it’s just an amazing community. I always avoided “class” types gym but P13 is great focusing on strength and conditioning. It is NOT CrossFit and I like that.

Joining P13 has been an incredible investment in myself. I came in not knowing much about fitness or how to use a lot of equipment. However, Michael and Jared do an incredible job making you feel comfortable, teaching you all you need to know and encouraging you along the way. The community is unmatched and I would highly recommend.

Michael and Jared are one of the few people that can kick me out of bed to go work out early in the morning! They are knowledgeable, positive, encouraging, a real source of motivation to push our boundaries. In a few month I have achieved more than I though could. Also I love the care they give to their community, it is inspiring!

I've been to a lot of gyms over the past 30 years living in San Francisco - from the now-defunct ClubOne in the 90s to about a thousand spin classes, TRX clubs, strength gyms, YMCA, open water swim clubs, Bay Club, etc. A great gym has a great community that inspires you to work out regularly under the guidance of committed fitness professionals. Project 13 does that better than anybody. I started there before covid, took the long break, and am happy to be back.

The coaches/owners Michael, Thomas and Jared know everyone's name, their goals, any injuries to be accommodated, and understand why their members are there. There is zero attitude among existing members and everyone welcomes new people.

The workout is challenging and varied with alternating upper and lower days and conditioning days, including the incredibly fun Team Conditioning session on Saturday mornings that is as fun a ziplining through the jungle in Costa Rica (if you like team cardio mixed with kettle bells, wall balls, squats, loud music and camaraderie).

The street appeal on Bush between Van Ness and Polk does not reveal the clean and inviting gym you find upstairs, so no one should judge this place on a drive-by.

Like many people, I could workout at home, but usually don't. There is some synergy that happens at Project 13 that creates many loyal and committed members, and it is all run from the top down by folks who care about anyone that comes to their gym.

2022 Update - P13 is back to in-person classes that are challenging, fun, and made up of a remarkably friendly community of regulars and new additions.

The culture is one where everyone is pushing themselves to get better but your neighbor’s always there to lend a hand or cheer you on.

The coaches are on top of watching out for proper form and happy to help with modifications as needed. You’ll leave feeling accomplished ((think sore but in a good way) but also ready and well equipped to come back the next day). Highly recommend both for the workout and the people - this gym is worth trekking for.

Original Review:
Let’s be honest, 2020 was a rough year for everyone. And yet to my surprise, I’m pleased to say that thanks to Michael, Thomas, Jared and the P13 team, I’ve been working out far more throughout the lockdown than in the “before times” and this has continued well into the re-opening of San Francisco.

If you’re looking for a new gym where you will be welcomed warmly into a new community yet challenged to continue to improve- look no further. These folks genuinely care about their people, put their hearts directly into what they do each day and want to see every participant succeed. Been working out from home but not sure how to push in the gym? No problem! They’ve got you. Old injury? Here’s a modification and the mobility work to help target those issues! Prefer safely-distanced workouts? On it.

Without these folks and their empathetic, challenging and caring approach to fitness, I know I would have struggled in quarantine (both mentally and physical health-wise). Instead, I’m now in the best physical shape I’ve been in for years and truly, it’s thanks to the thought, intention and energy this team puts into each of their sessions with their community. Michael, Thomas, Jared and P13 team- San Francisco is lucky to have you as part of the community.

Michael & Jared had been very helpful with my fitness development over six months now. At my first conditioning class, I almost passed out because I was so weak and out of shape. With attentive help from these two gentlemen, I am stronger now and I’m improving my overall body performance. Most importantly, I’m learning how to take things slowly with the training and be patient with my body. No worries if you can’t do a single push up, it’s a judge-free environment where everybody works out here are committed to their own fitness journey. 💪

Insight: It helps when you know the basic forms of workout movements but no worries if you don’t. They will teach you all the details👍

One of the best gyms I’ve ever been to (and I’ve been to a lot). The coaches are friendly, knowledgeable and always helpful. The people that come here are so nice and friendly as well. The workouts they create are challenging and Thomas/Michael are always there to answer any questions you have. They even go as far as to help you with your personal goals. I’m getting married soon and told Michael about my goals for the big day and we came up with a little plan which he helps hold me accountable for. Overall, it’s a great gym and I highly recommend coming in for a class!

This place is awesome! I was visiting from out of town and only in San Fran for a few days. I was looking for a place to workout that was quality - good workout, good format and good instructors. P13 was that! A smaller group class focused on strength training - with an attentive and friendly staff. I really wish my hometown had a place like this because it was just that great. Michael is such a great trainer and also very fun and friendly. If you live in San Fran - GO HERE! I’m sure it is one the few places that has coaches actually ate educated and know their stuff. If you’re visiting - GO HERE. same reasoning as above.

I’ve been going to Project 13 for a little over a year now and it has been a fantastic ride. Initially I was afraid of lifting heavy and really didn’t even know where to start with upper body. I’m happy to say that I can do all of TWO unassisted pull-ups and can bench much more than I ever thought I could.

All that said and done, Nate and Thomas do an amazing job of creating a community of really great and fun people. They really work with you to make sure your form is on point and ensure that your individualized goals are coming along. These workouts are always the one thing I look forward to every single day.

Project 13 is an amazing place! I recently joined after training at a previous gym and the difference is palpable in many ways. It is clear that Thomas and Nate genuinely care about every person who walks through the door - whether it's your very first visit or you're a long-time member. Nate and Thomas are enthusiastic about each class and provide a positive, supportive, and motivating atmosphere. Both Nate and Thomas are very conscious of form and ensuring everyone is comfortable with the workout. They always offer modifications or alternatives if a certain movement is not for you. I also appreciate the attention to detail in terms of programming. Every 6 weeks has a different focus, so you can track your progress and improvement. Previously, I was working out and felt like I was improving, but had no way to really know - thanks to Project 13, now I do! I've also noticed that I never watch the clock to check when the class is over. Each class always keeps me engaged, challenged and focused. Finally and importantly, the culture at Project 13 is warm and welcoming. I look forward to being a Project 13 member for many years to come.

I wholeheartedly recommend Project 13 and suggest that you try it out!

Meeting Nate and Thomas and working out at Project 13 has been life changing for me...After playing sports in college, I spent the last 9 years working out at 24 Hour Fitness and until I joined Project 13, had forgotten how I missed the camaraderie of working out with great people that push you to work hard and get better everyday.

Nate and Thomas have built a great culture that reminds me of what it was like while I was playing at USC...amazing coaches who care about you and push you to work hard while in the gym but also challenge you to think differently about your habits, sleep and nutrition to reach your ultimate goals.

I'm so glad I found Project 13. I feel like Coaches Nate and Thomas have made the effort to get to know me, and all the members. They give the specific technical cues and encouragement (or caution) that I need.

The programming is a great mix of strength (barbell, dumbbell, kettlebell, med ball) mobility and conditioning.

I've also loved the members - glad I get to spend an hour every day with such friendly folk. It's not just hard work. It's fun.
