Starting in 2005 I had sprained both ankles playing soccer in community college, each a year apart. From then on I developed knee pain, IT band pain, and shin splints. I did all the physical therapy which I ended up stopping due to very little, if any, improvement. A few years later after having a very traumatic delivery of my first of 3 children, I developed chronic, widespread pain that the doctors chalked up to fibromyalgia. I did not want to be put on medication (antidepressants were the recommended treatment) and with what felt like no real help, the daily pain took over and negatively affected my sleep, mental health, and overall outlook on life. In 2020 I started following Functional Patterns on Instagram but kind of left it on the back burner. In the mean time, I tried other methodologies and while I would feel better initially, the nagging pain would resurface. I would always need to take a break and then start all over again.
In 2024 I finally circled back to FP and started off with the 10 week online course and loved it. I was fortunate enough to live 5 minutes from the South Bay facility and signed up for private lessons 2x/week for a year. I can easily say that it has been probably the single best investment for my health. While I still have plenty of room for improvement, life just hits differently when you're not in constant pain. I have more energy, less anxiety, and my favorite... hope! Hope for a future that affords me a better quality of life; one to enjoy and not just try to bear through. Functional Patterns South Bay has been such a blessing. The facility is top notch and the staff is amazing. The practitioners are kind, knowledgeable, and great problem solvers! My teen son and I had the pleasure of working with Patrick. He is an amazing coach! We both have had clearly visible strength and posture improvements. My current pain levels are minimal at most, if any. I have been able to play basketball with my son again without my body "suffering the consequences" haha! I am currently signed up with a Project Function membership and plan on working with Patrick again in the near future. Two of my sons are also in the Youth Posture and Performance class and really love it. Overall wonderful experience.

Patrick has been very dedicated to helping me become pain-free after getting a herniated disc. I no longer experience pain and feel optimistic about the future. Changing years of bad form is not easy, but it's for sure possible if you want it, and Patrick is a great coach to get there.

I can’t recommend Functional Patterns South Bay highly enough! I trained with Patrick and Mollie, and the experience was absolutely transformative. Their attention to detail, professionalism, and deep knowledge of the Functional Patterns system sets this studio apart from any other gym or training facility I’ve been to.

What really impressed me was how they focused on fixing posture, improving gait, and addressing the root causes of pain rather than just giving me a generic workout. Every session built on the last, and I walked out not only moving better but feeling like I had the tools to make lasting changes.

If you’re in San Jose or anywhere in the Bay Area, it’s 100% worth making the trip down to FP South Bay. The environment is welcoming, the training is tailored to the individual, and the results speak for themselves. Whether you’re dealing with pain, looking to improve your movement, or just want a smarter approach to fitness, this is the place to go.

Highly recommend FP South Bay for anyone serious about their long-term health, posture, and performance.

We’ve been training at Functional Patterns South Bay for about 10 months, and it’s been such a positive and transformative experience for both me and my 12-year-old son. Every practitioner has been kind, knowledgeable, attentive, and patient throughout our journey.

My son came in with knee pain, frequent stomach issues, and was often getting sick. Now, he’s pain-free, has noticeably improved posture, biomechanics, and endurance—especially on the soccer field—and his gut health and overall tolerance to illness have improved significantly. He feels stronger, healthier, and more confident.

As for me, I came in feeling tired, defeated, and frustrated after hitting so many plateaus with other approaches to health. Since starting at FPSB, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of how my body functions and now feel stronger, more energized, and excited about my progress. I’m sleeping better, feeling less stressed, and more like myself.

We’ve done a mix of private sessions and group classes—both have been incredibly valuable. The private sessions are personalized to our specific needs, and the group classes are fun, educational, and a great way to move alongside like-minded people.

We’re truly grateful for all that FPSB has done for us!

We tried the initial assessment and it was not worth the money. It's very expensive for what you get out of the session. They basically identify issues with posture which is useful but it's way overpriced. They also give some techniques for this and those techniques were really basic and nothing specific to my posture or physique. Overall it's not worth the money

I've been training with Luis Ponce Jr. at Functional Patterns South Bay for over three years. Luis is an incredible trainer. He is proficient at posture and gait analysis, and has a firm grasp of the Functional Patterns training method. I have been able to watch and feel my gait cycle, posture, and dynamic movements improve greatly, and feel amazing. Luis does a great job of pushing me past my comfort zone, as well as meeting me where I'm at. He also provides helpful study material for me to work on outside of sessions. The South Bay team does more than personal training — they go out of their way to foster a friendly and healthy community, and their care for this community is evident in how they extend themselves and offer helpful advice around lifestyle choices. Luis, Mollie and Patrick have all positively influenced my life and helped me grow. If you're considering giving Functional Patterns a try, FP South Bay has an incredible facility and amazing team to back it up.

I had the opportunity to train with Luis Jr. during my 3 year stint at Functional Patterns Southbay and the training was well worth it. During grad school, I was a personal trainer who worked at places like the YMCA, Equinox, and trained at corporate spaces like LinkedIn. I know what it takes to appeal to a person who is looking to train and improve there functionality and mobility. With that said, I have never experienced a more effective modality (Functional Patterns) when it comes to improving a person’s functionality and mobility. In addition to experiencing Functional Patterns, the trainer, Luis Jr., is a very patient and intentional practitioner. He helped me to see the importance of Functional Patterns. All the trainers there are quality trainers and will help with getting you to the level you are envisioning for yourself.

Can’t thank the team at FP Southbay enough for all the help they have provided for me and my body. Came to them 3 or 4 months ago with debilitating lower back, disc herniation, and sciatic pain issues. I couldn’t move my body in any way without experiencing pain, but using their methods and system has allowed me to fully sprint without any pain in this short amount of time and I am already noticing my entire structure and posture change for the better. Overall my day to day pain has diminished greatly and is only getting better as the days go on. Great system, great application, and overall really great people who put in the work and show care and love to their clients. Couldn’t recommend FPSB enough to anyone looking to change themselves for the better! Big thank you to Luis, Mollie, and Patrick for all they do.

Been following Functional Patterns for years, I learned about self myofascial releases. Was the only thing to help me with my chronic pain on my entire body, spams, spurs on my spine, and nerve pain, due to a degenerative illness (Crohn's disease), poor posture habits, working enviroment and personal lifestyle. Finally, be able to attend private sessions with Luis and Molly. What a game changer! Started to feel improvements since day one. Even, physically I noted certain changes. One of the best decisions I made on my life. For me, this is the beginning of my transformation. Their dedication, the empowerment sensation over your health, and the profound self awareness about your own body mechanisms are just few of the things Functional Patterns will bring to you.

Before my first session at FP South Bay December 2019 I was constantly in pain and constantly seeking something to learn how to help me rid of my aches and structural burdens brought on by years of martial art, surfing, traditional weight lifting and a career in manual therapy.
I have been around the block experiencing many methodologies for the better part of 14yrs like yoga, Pilates, physical therapy, Rolfing, massage… and felt some relief but not for long before i was back in a storm of pain and cognitive dissonance.
Now Almost 2yrs training with the team at FP South Bay and they have changed my world and keep rocking it…literally!
I wake up everyday look at myself in the mirror which can be brutally honest but necessary if you are being sincere and chip away with functional patterns knowing I have the tools and guidance to get up, let go and get it done
I finish my days look at my notes and re-adapt and keep building structural gains…without pain.
To Luis Ponce and FP South Bay team thanks for your dedication and encouragement to grow beyond my self imposed limitations… Training Intentionally and not Habitually.

Their assessment was thorough and made good use of movement mapping technologies. They helped me understand how I can improve the way my body works during performance activities that I enjoy like running and cycling. They helped me start the process for engaging muscles that compliment each other and balance out my effort to help prevent injury and increase power. Highly recommended.
