If you’re looking for a gym to start weightlifting THIS IS IT. I only used the treadmill at the gym and now I’m learning how to lift and do more metabolic workouts. This gym has an amazing sense of community where people of all ages and experience levels learn and laugh with one another. The photo below is only 2 months in! Just try a class! It’ll be worth it.

The coaches also have connections in the community of Oakland. I’ve struggled with lower back pain and they connected me with a PT who practices in the area who has discount rates for gym members. Learning new stretches/ exercises has been a game changer.

Let me guys tell you about Providence Athletic Club! I came in for the “That’s so Jesus” Gospel Fitness class with my friend Lenaya, and I had the best gym experience! I am naturally a very shy person and I Get a little anxiety when I’m around strangers. Camilo and his team were very welcoming and attentive to everyone even with it being in a group session…not to mention the facility is very nice, ventilated and clean. I was paying a gym membership to 24 hour fitness for seven months without even going more than once since I paid for it, that had to do with my experience and not feeling confident in my abilities to use the gym equipment along with unhelpful staff. PROVIDENCE won me over with the experience as a whole, and I am now a proud member of Providence!!! If I can give them 10 stars, I would!

This has been one of the most unprofessional and uncomfortable experiences I’ve ever had with a personal trainer. I hired ***Melvin Biagas*** in June and there were multiple occasions when he never showed up or showed up late. This "professional" would text me hours later saying he didn’t hear his alarm and it got to the point where I had to text him every morning to confirm if we were still meeting.

Due to the inconsistency, I decided to stop training with him while I still had 4 sessions left. Not only has he failed to refund me, he also started sending me inappropriate text messages in the middle of the night.

I reported this to the gym on their web site/instagram and haven’t heard back, which is quite alarming considering other women train there and the reputation of their facility.

I would strongly caution others before working with this trainer or trusting this gym’s accountability.

I joined Providence a little over 2 months ago after spending months searching for the right gym and instantly knew I had found the place I needed for the most optimal outcome.

After injuring my back 3–4 years ago while weight training, I had been hesitant to train at a high intensity again. I knew I needed guidance, supervision, and feedback to improve my form and the quality of each movement. That’s exactly what I receive at Providence and more!

The atmosphere is motivating, positive, powerful, and inviting. The music is always on point, and there’s a true sense of genuine care. Since joining, I’ve noticed a huge difference: my mood is better, my energy has increased, my back pain has significantly decreased, and I feel stronger and more confident in my lifting. I was able to carry my daughter for over a mile during a recent hike after she had injured herself!

I moved to SF recently and came to check out this gym because I love weight lifting but I have an injury in my low back and glutes that has prevented me from being able to workout solo without pain.

LIFE. CHANGING. GYM. I got so much individual instruction and one on one coaching, specific to my injury and my areas of pain while lifting and doing metabolic conditioning.

If you’re looking for individual attention akin to personal training and a community of people to workout with, this gym strikes that unique balance. I feel like I have been so stuck with my injury that I didn’t feel I could get back into lifting, but Coach Camilo was so attuned to the way different muscles work together that he genuinely helped me workout without feeling pain in months.

Cherry on top is that I could bring my dog to the gym and have her chill there while I worked out. Leashed her to a weight and was always happy to see her between sets. There are a couple adorable kitties here too.

Parking wise, I parked on the street nearby. There’s also a parking lot across the street I think you can use. Brought my stuff inside into a cubby.

I met Danielle years ago when she was a coach at OrangeTheory. In her classes, which were packed with people, I was able to reach new heights. Despite the crowd, she always made me feel seen and valued. Fast forward a year, and I’ve now followed Danielle and her partner Camilo to their new venture, Providence Athletic Club.

After considering the time and money I was spending at OrangeTheory, I decided I’d rather support a locally owned gym—and it has exceeded my expectations in every way. I’ve been a member for about two months now, and I can’t imagine going anywhere else.

I’ve become more serious about my fitness goals, and Danielle has delivered. With a personalized meal plan, progress tracking through photos, and group training classes that feel more like a fitness family, I’ve found everything I need. The vibe at Providence Athletic Club is unmatched. With hip-hop music pumping through the speakers, you feel like you can conquer even the heaviest deadlift. This gym inspires you to work hard because the coaches and members genuinely believe in and support one another. If you’re looking for a gym that takes fitness and community seriously, this is the place. Check your ego at the door and get ready to sweat, grunt, and grow together.

However, for those seeking a more polished gym like Barry’s or OrangeTheory—with specific stations and larger group classes—this might not be the right fit. Providence Athletic Club is a smaller, steadily growing business that emphasizes personalized coaching and community.

6 month follow up:

My week feels off if I don’t start my day at Providence. I have been taking Danielle’s 6am class now since December of 2024 and I am the strongest I have ever been; push ups, box jumps, and my cardio vascular is on point. This has become a part of my routine. Would still recommend.

Ive been coming here since October of 2024 and have been loving my morning gym routine here! Before joining, I was always a bit skeptical with weight lifting because of past knee and back injuries, but working closely with Camilo has given me the confidence and strength to be able to take on exercises and feel great afterwards. Since joining, I’ve noticed muscle gains and performance growth in other sports that I do such as jiu jitsu and cycling. Camilo definitely takes the time to listen to you and coaches you so you’re able to build confidence and be able to continue growth physically and mentally. The gym vibe is also amazing. Everyone here is on their own journey and it’s great having to share that experience with them at the gym! I found Providence gym online and wanted to get back into shape and learn some new ways to do that and have a good routine. The gym is a very welcoming environment with coaches that are dedicated to helping you achieve your goals no matter where you are starting from. I have been working with Camilo whom challenges me and works with me well on an individual level to get me to the healthy place that I want to be. I was recommended to join this gym by my sister because I have been ready to make a change physically for a while now. Honestly, I was a little scared starting. I was someone who was easily intimidated by the thought of going to the gym and easily discouraged because I did not know much about fitness in general. This gym definitely changed my perspective on fitness! Coach Camilo is super compassionate and makes an effort to connect with all of his clients to meet you where you are versus pushing you super hard on day one. Coach D is super sweet as well!

I’ve learned a lot about body awareness & nutrition since I’ve started training here, which has made a huge difference in how I look at fitness as a whole. The gym is always clean, the people are super friendly, the music is dope, and the equipment is definitely top-tier. This gym has a great vibe all around. I take the group classes with Camilo which are both challenging and enjoyable. Camilo exudes positivity and makes it very clear that your growth is important to him. He gives very detailed directive, focusing on proper form and technique, ensuring your movements are done correctly every time. I also take personal training sessions from Danielle who is helping me improve my strength after numerous knee injuries. She challenges me with movements that are both complex and fun, plus she's a joy to be around. Camillo is incredibly dedicated and thoughtful about his approach to training. He seems to have a bottomless well of knowledge which he employs to keep workouts interesting and non-repetitive. Even if there’s a large group, he makes sure to check in with everyone and make sure they’re squared away and positioned to get the most out of the workout. I’ve been nursing a shoulder injury and Camillo, without my asking him, creates alternate workouts to both protect and strengthen my shoulder.
Camillo’s approach to training is as much intellectual as it is physical. He takes the time to explain what each exercise is designed to do from a musculo-skeletal perspective, as well as how it interacts with and works and builds off the other exercises.
