About the Club

Pure Strength was founded by Melissa Gunn in 2004.
PURESTRENGTH is a professional fitness training facility, not a gym.

We seek to inspire, inform and educate, providing expert one-on-one instruction designed for your optimal training experience.

In your 20-minute, once or twice a week personal training sessions, one of our exercise specialists will guide you through your slow motion/high-intensity training.

Utilizing our breakthrough technique of slow cadence strength training, on select equipment in an exclusive setting, at Pure Strength we desire the minimum amount of exercise that will produce the stimulus for adaptation. Anything beyond this amount of exercise only acts to consume precious recovery resources.

I love PureStrength, it’s made me so much healthier and stronger, it has been life-changing for me. I started about a year ago because, nearing 60, I got a bone density scan and my numbers indicated pretty serious osteoporosis, especially in my spine. My doctor recommended dietary changes, resistance training and meds. I decided to try it all — and for training, I started PureStrength. I have been consistent and am happy to report that I got another scan last week and my numbers drastically improved (from -3.1 to -2.6). Beyond that, which is pretty tremendous, I just love how much better I feel. Every day, I feel stronger, more connected to my body and my strength -/ and my posture has changed. I’m petite, and one of the other most significant changes is my outlook on my future: I no longer fear that I will inevitably grow frail. Instead, I feel confident that I can continue to be and feel strong as long as I continue to show up at PureStrength. The workouts are hard, but I always leave feeling strong and joyous — all the instructors are great, I’ve been fortunate to get to train one on one with Lisa, an all-around amazing teacher and a true inspiration to me! I love this place and couldn’t recommend it more highly.

Pure strength works wonders. I have been working out with the trainers at Pure Strength for over ten years. I can’t imagine what my 70’s would be like without their involvement in my strength health. Through ups and downs and all my life injuries (not ever from workouts,) they have guided me . I am stronger and better at this age than I ever could have hoped. Melissa, Lisa, Isabella & Lupita are so knowledgeable about the body and the process of becoming stronger. You can’t go wrong under their guidance!

I’ve known Melissa for well over 20 years. We met when she started taking my yoga class and she and her husband have continued ever since as the years have gone by things change and my bone density has really decreased. Although I’ve always worked out in addition to Yoga, it was never enough to have the impact on my bones to keep them from decreasing. I broke my ankle very badly this past summer and because of it, I started working with Melissa at Pure Strength to gain my strength back and also work on my bone density and muscle strength.
Honestly, I wish I had started this 20 years ago when she first opened Pure Strength. It has changed my life. It’s nothing that you could compare to what we know as weightlifting or resistance training or working out in the gym. What she and her amazing staff are able to do for you in this type of program is beyond what you can imagine. I can’t say enough about how it has impacted my life in such an amazing way. I will say that I hope I can continue to do this type of training forever.

It's been a hot minute since I have worked out and this is exactly what I needed. This is a very specific way of weight training that avoids injury and maximizes your workout. I have only been going for a month now and I feel such a difference in my body. It feels stronger and more flexible and my aches and pains are diminishing (some have gone away already) ... If you haven't tried it, do yourself a favor and check this out ... It is definitely experiential. You also have a trainer monitoring you the entire time tracking your progress as making sure you are doing the exercises correctly and in proper form. I can’t remember when I started with Melissa and Pure Strength but it’s been many years. I’ve made Pure Strength one of my consistent exercise routines for those many years because of Mellisa and her team. They pay special attention to every client to ensure that you work out smart and continue to grow stronger with every session. Melissa, the owner, Randi, Lupita and Lisa, you are all amazing trainers. I really feel I'm strengthening my entire body. It's a short invigorating workout in a comfortable setting one on one with a trainer. Prior to Pure Strength, I had no weight training experience. Now, I've been coming to Pure Strength for over two years twice a week. I love how much better I feel. I reversed my osteopenia and have even lost weight. I would highly recommend Melissa's approach to slow strength training and would encourage any age male or female to try out Pure Strength. I found Pure Strength on-line through Yelp recommendations. The reviews were so positive. I would encourage anyone who is thinking about fitness and weight training to go with Pure Strength!!! I wish I could give them more than five stars.

I love working out with the trainers here so very much! After just a few sessions I could feel my body changing, getting stronger. Slow-motion strength training is incredibly challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. The trainers are very attuned to proper form and any physical issues we might have, while also being very encouraging. And I even saw improvement in a recent DEXA bone density scan!

I love Pure Strength - both the people and the program! I’ve never exercised consistently but have been diligent with this workout since 2011. The only time I missed my workouts was when recovering from a car accident. Last year I was a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk in Sherman Oaks, and I had the “walk” light, when I was struck by an SUV and thrown about 15 feet. It was pure luck that I didn’t hit my head and Pure Strength that I walked away with only a crushed vertabra and cracked rib. Osteoporosis runs in my family and doctors are always surprised when they do bone density tests and I test far younger than my age💪🏼. Melissa and her trainers are also good for my spirit. I never fail to leave happier than when I arrive!

I’ve been having Pure Strength sessions on Zoom, and recently started going to the studio as well. Studio is clean and bright.
Friends are telling me I look strong now.
I am more confident about what I can do physically. My diaphragm and breathing are strong for voice lessons.
Melissa and her team have the right blend of firmness, progress-tracking, and warm encouragement.

My osteoporosis is stabilized.
Melissa and her team have provided consistent caring instruction. That combined with annual infusions of bone density medication have stopped my bone density from declining in my hips. In fact, the density in my spine has improved slightly.

Before Pure Strength I used to throw my back out at least a couple of times per year and I was also diagnosed with osteoporosis. However since going to Pure Strength my back is just fine and every year my bone density has increased, along with everyone else in my group workout. We call ourselves the Gluteators and it's so much fun. Melissa, Lisa, Isabella and all the trainers are amazing and highly skilled at watching over my form, keeping track of progress and motivating all of us. Additionally Melissa was invaluable in helping me recuperate from a car accident quickly and safely. Pure Strength is the gold standard in building muscle, staying strong and being safe while aging. I am a cancer survivor recovering from a bone marrow transplant. Pure Strength has played a big part in my recovery. Over the past few months Melissa and her team (thanks Isabella) have designed a program to build back my strength in a very supportive and methodical way. Each session is about twenty minutes and it seems too easy to be effective but the results have been profound. There is a big focus on form using the weight machines. Little adjustments are made to make sure my body is aligned and ready to build muscle properly. I feel stronger with every session and I’m so grateful to have found this place. I highly recommend.

I cant tell you enough about how the training at Pure Strength has helped me over the past 7 or so years.
For me it is a manageable way to gain muscle and stay fit. As an undisciplined person who has not included weight training and really distained the idea of going to the gym, it is a doable practice that I have managed to keep up with over the long haul.
I have noticed my body is more shaped, have maintained my strength as I continue to age, I am 70 now, and continue to progress even when I think I have plateaued. Having personal one on one training provides an experience which keeps me coning back.
It's like all good things, I just have to keep on pushing myself to reap the benefit.

I have scoliosis so I was weary about taking up any form of weight training for fear that it might exacerbate an already precarious situation. But, after several months of working out at PS, I'm happy to report that this is the place to go if you want to do strength training and you have a bad back. Last week I pulled my back a few days before my scheduled session. Reluctantly, I went in anyway and left with my back feeling BETTER. There is not better review than that.

I have been going to PS for a little over 3 years now. Prior to joining I tried to work out with a "regular" trainer, but the 3x a week/1 hour was too much for my busy schedule. My acupuncturist recommended PS to me and I have never looked back. The training is quick, 1x week for 1/2 hour, and very effective. The trainers are very knowledgeable and very well trained in this unique form of exercise. I actually love going each week even though the actual workout can be quite challenging. It is definitely a very good hard workout. The benefits of balance, strength, bone density, etc. that I am getting from weight training is so important in keeping up my quality of life as I get into my 60's. I love this business and would give them 50 stars if google would let me.

I travel 10 miles from my home (there are facilities much closer) so I can workout with Melissa. As a woman in her seventies, I understand the need for weight training to prevent muscle loss and build stamina. Melissa’s program has not only given me increased endurance for my everyday activities, but has, because of muscle tone, improved my skiing and enhanced my balance. I'm one of those people who doesn't write reviews, but I feel so stoked about my Pure Strength sessions I had to. I've been looking for this kind of workout my whole life. I danced professionally for years, did Pilates, tried gym memberships, but until doing this particular slow workout, I've never felt so satisfied—and safe. For me, it's like a meditation: I'm able to go inside and feel every muscle working with each exercise. There's almost no room for harm because the level of awareness is so strong and immediate. I literally feel my muscles strengthening through the resistance! And I'm so surprised that I get the cardio results that I do from this short workout too. I appreciate not having to slam through a routine and that Melissa and her team are as passionate as I am about the health of my body. So much to love about this! I am almost 75, and the slow weight program with an individual coach has aided health and quality of life immeasurably. With a coach I have been able to dramatically strengthen muscles without injury. The body really responds to the workouts and I also become more flexible, believe it or not! As well as better at balance. The weights also really get circulation going and blood flowing. Melissa and Kirsten, whom I have worked with, are so attentive and encouraging and knowledgeable. I have been a member of Pure Strength for a full year now. After approximately 50 one-on-one private training sessions, once weekly for 20-30 minutes each, I am very satisfied with the results I've achieved. When people comment on how my body has changed, and ask how I've done it, they are shocked to hear how little of my time has gone into it. The science behind the techniques used at Pure Strength make the workouts efficient and effective. All the trainers, and especially owner Melissa Gunn, are a pleasure to be around. They each know how to get the most from each workout without pushing you beyond your breaking point.

Yes, the workouts are intense, but simply put, there's probably nothing better you can do to gain strength safely and efficiently than getting a membership at Pure Strength.
