This gym is really fun and welcoming. Their coaches are always positive, supportive, and helpful. My favorite is Maggie. And Ashleigh. And Jordan. Actually, all of them are amazing. Best gym I have ever been a part of. Sauna and cold plunges are a sweet perk as well.

Did a drop in while visiting from NYC.

The coach, Ashleigh, was extremely friendly, the WOD and other members were great, and cold plunge/sauna was top notch.

Thank you for having us!

I’ve had a great experience at this RESET. The community here is super welcoming and makes it easy to stay motivated. I’ve been doing personal training, and it’s really helped keep me accountable.

Jordan is awesome — he knows his stuff and designs workouts that are right for me and my goals. I always feel challenged, but in a good way, and I can definitely see the progress.

The gym itself is well set up, and I love that they have a sauna and cold plunge. Both have made a huge difference in my recovery and how I feel after tough workouts.

If you’re looking for a supportive place with smart coaching and great recovery tools, I highly recommend checking it out!

Love this gym. Creative, inclusive, forward thinking. The coaches have given me good tips and encouragement. Not as intense as other CrossFit experiences I have had. Price is decent, at the time of this review if you make it 3-4 times a week it’s approximately 12 dollars per class. I have read a couple reviews that say the
coaches were not very friendly. This was not my experience. It is co owned by a person of color and the DEI vibe is there but not overly stated or capitalized on. Maybe they could use more lower weights for the barbell but I love the small building size as it keeps it intimate and creative which I personally enjoy.

Title: Where the Sauna is as steamy as the conversation and the cold plunge revitalizes you like the owners Oura.

Picture this, a gym where you feel like Norm from cheers because the owner (Jordan) upon your first day with makes everyone memorize your name with engaging fun and exercise. A place where 7 days a week you can work on wellness in a digitally controlled Sauna and cold plunge which revitalizes your soul like the first sip of a crisp Dr. Pepper. Facilities and gym equipment are clean and new (Rogue Brand) and 2 full shower stalls so you can workout then head straight to work. Patrons of Reset will also have a digital fob so you can access the gym 24/7 so no matter what your schedule is you can enjoy the Facilities and workout to reach your full potential. Make sure to ask about flag day festivities!

Dropped in this morning while visiting San Diego and had a great experience. I’m usually a little nervous when dropping in but felt very welcome at RESET. Coach Ashleigh greeted me when I arrived and got me quickly acclimated to the facility. I was pleasantly surprised when people from the class just finishing up greeted me — so nice! Everyone in the class that I took was the same way. I guess this is why I am such a fan of the CrossFit community. :)

The workout included ring muscle up skill work (a movement I do not have). I appreciated the instruction breaking it down and the modifications. The metcon was a good and challenging one.

Overall, great facility with everything and more that you’d expect from a CrossFit gym. Fantastic coaching, solid workouts and super friendly.

Hillcrest’s best kept secret is about to be leaked!! If you are looking for a new gym to help you achieve your fitness goals, while having fun with a welcoming community, then I think you should look no further than RESET. RESET is a top notch facility with new equipment, extremely knowledgable coaches, and a great group of members in each class. Additionally, RESET has 2 cold plunge tubs, and a huge sauna to maximize your recovery on rest days. Ashleigh, Jordan, and Josue do an incredible job coaching classes and helping new members, and experienced members alike. Hurry!! Drop-in to a class now, before it’s all booked up!!

A spa experience for a gym rat. Visiting from out of town, I dropped in and got an amazing workout. I didn’t take a class, just used the facility. The equipment is top notch and clean. I arrived at 9:30 am and I paid for a drop in and had the space to myself. After a great hour workout I spent 30 minutes going back and forth from the sauna to the cold plunge. Clean showers, great space, I wish I had a place like this near my house! A real joy.

The best yin yoga class I’ve been to, I just loved it! Tamara integrates breathing with deep, slow yoga moves that really stretched and restored my muscles. She was so welcoming and kind, was very clear in guiding us, and even finished the class with a soothing 10-15 sound bath during shavasana. The class was candle light-style, which created a peaceful vibe. I was feeling so relaxed and zen afterwards. RESET is such a cool gym too, with an open and modern style. Maggie who manages the gym was there and was incredibly nice, making me feel right at home. And there’s lots of free parking in their parking lot. I can’t wait to go back!

Great gym, super clean, easy environment to enter if you’re unfamiliar with group fitness. The coaches are very knowledgeable and actually care; it’s like having a personal trainer in a group setting. The workouts will challenge you, but are friendly for all levels of fitness. Highly recommend a drop-in class with Jordan, but be warned…you will become a member after.

JOIN THIS GYM! Warm, inclusive community and judgement free zone but still pushing you to your limits each class!

The coaches really take time to understand your fitness level and make adjustments for you personally. I had never done Crossfit before and was extremely nervous to go. Even though I was the only new one in class, it didn't feel like it. The coach thoroughly demo'd and explained each movement to the entire class. He gave me great pointers to adjust my form and modified where needed.

Aside from the BEST coaches, the workouts themselves are AMAZING! I saw a huge improvement in my cardio and strength in just a few months. The coaches strategically map out all the workouts, it feels like I have my own personal trainer with the level of detail put into each session.

Going to this gym is the best part of my week.

I came in for a drop-in class on a trip to San Diego a few weeks ago, and I am so thrilled I found this gym. Super easy to book a drop-in and very communicative leading up to the workout. Inclusive, GAY FRIENDLY, motivational, worthy, and so much more! I felt scared to come at first, and having not been to CrossFit in so long, it was intimidating. However, once we walked in, people introduced themselves and showed interest in us. They were immediately friendly and calmed my nerves. At first, I thought the guy who introduced himself was the coach. But come to find out everyone, even after, was friendly. Now it’s like a second home! I love it!! Dez, Maggie, and of course Jordan make it all worth it! Love this gym!!!

This CrossFit gym is in a class all by itself. I have been to quite a few gyms and I have never felt more welcome and supported. I started going here a couple months ago. Before that, I had zero “gym” experience with weights and stuff like that I just ran for exercise. Since basically everything was new for me it was definitely overwhelming but the instructors do a good job explaining stuff and scaling it to what I’m capable of doing. I like the variety of the workouts and I can tell I’m getting stronger already. I also like that there’s a nice variety of people-both personality and physical ability. The gym doesn’t have the stereotypical gym bro vibe, it’s very welcoming to all people and all physical abilities. I always walk out of the classes being glad I went

In 7 years of CrossFit in 3 locations, CF Hillcrest is the best CrossFit box I have been to or been a member of, hands down 🙌. CF Lvl 4 (can you say unicorn) and CrossFit Regional level instructors combined with the most accepting and approachable environment for all levels of athletes made joining CF Hillcrest a literal no brainier when I moved to San Diego. After dropping in for a few weeks while visiting the area...

Of all the crossfit gyms I've dropped in around the country, this box ranks near the very best. The coaching team, led by Jordan, is top tier. And to their credit, I witnessed them to be equally attentive and supportive to all athletes of all experiences and abilities. Lastly, the community is terrific. ***THIS GYM IS UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT. THE ENTIRE COACHING STAFF HAS SINCE CHANGED (Sept 2022).***

I joined Hillcrest Athletic Club at the beginning of October 2020 and I have been so happy with my fitness journey! The coaching staff is very welcoming and informative. The programming is a good mix of lifting (weight and Olympic) and cardio, which I especially love so I don’t have to take a day off to do cardio on my own. There is always some extra challenge going on for extracurricular improvement (ie. weekly pull up accessory work, rowing) which is a fun way to feel more involved in the gym. And most importantly the covid precautions they take at this gym make me feel very safe when working out. There are class caps to keep the number of bodies down as well as increased cleaning (plenty of rags and simple green to go around). I especially like the two giant glass garage doors that essentially open one side of the entire gym to open air. Since recently SD moved back into the purple tier, they have moved the classes outside (which is covered and lit) and the staff has not missed a beat— the workouts are still varied and competitive, and everyone is still in high spirits. Overall I really like the culture of the gym and the open communication the gym owner Mike has with his members. Come try out HAC! You won’t regret it!

Don't let the few negative reviews sway you... I love this gym! I have never done CrossFit before and had the fitness level of someone who went through a 5+ year pandemic however, I wanted to challenge my overweight, middle-aged hiney. They provide adaptations to the workouts so, if it's your first time or your 1,001st time, you get a challenge tailored to your fitness level. I also enjoy the non-CrossFit classes they offer and the other perks associated with the monthly membership.

Give the week-long trial a spin - I can almost guarantee you'll be hooked!

I’ve been at this gym for 6 weeks now and Mike(owner) has done an amazing job keeping the gym open and following guidelines to stay open. Equipment is constantly cleaned and there is plenty of workout space. The gym is extremely welcoming and I started here with a medium amount of experience and I’ve received amazing guidance from coaches on form and alternate options for certain movements since I sometimes have pain in my shoulder and knee. If your new to CrossFit I would recommend giving this gym a try. You receive a lot of coaching even during group classes and everyone here is focused on safety which I think is awesome so we can continuously workout with our regressing :)!

I've been working out at HAC for almost two months. I typically go Monday-Friday at the 530AM class, and man does it kick my butt each and every morning. It's a great way to start off the work day! The coaches are great, fun, attentive, corrective, and kind. I'm definitely glad I made the switch!

I have a lot of fun working out in a very effective way in the great classes led by the best fitness instructors in town. Hillcrest Athletic club is in prime location w parking lot, it is not a franchise and the owners are pure inspiration. Classes are small which give us the opportunity to make friends and get dedicated attention from coaches.
The gym just reopened and it’s following top safety and cleaning protocols to adjust to this crazy times, I’ve been feeling very safe in the classes and it’s just heart warming and motivating to work out with friends again. Be aware that this is a very inclusive and welcoming community to all kinds of labels and fitness levels and your uniqueness is valued and appreciated.

Great gym, excellent instructors, very welcoming and good mix of skill levels. They do an exceptional job of adjusting workouts if needed for any physical limitations of each participant. I return every year when I visit San Diego.

I highly recommend HAC. The boot camp classes are all small and allow the trainer to give one on one attention to everyone.
This also allows the workouts and movements to be scaled and adjusted to each person's needs. You can't get that at the big gyms for the price of a standard membership. I've priced it out.
I also love the boot camp specifically because of the cardio integration. It's an ideal combination of muscle development as well as conditioning and endurance.
Again, cannot reccomend enough for all levels of experience or non-experience to help with your fitness goals.
I also love how friendly and kind everyone is. Not all all the stereotypical bro-meat-market vibe, which makes me feel comfortable to focus on my workout and not worrying who's standing around.
10/10 definitely reccomend!

I dropped in while traveling and was greeted by David. He got me checked in and was busy with another class. The gym was not too crowded and equipment was in good working order. The vibe was relaxed and quiet, music not too loud. I got a good workout with some unique accessory work. The coach (David) was approachable and knowledgeable and provided tips but he wasn't very excited or friendly. Maybe he wasnt feeling that great? Its a good spot to drop in and get a good workout but the vibe was not the smiley positive space im used to in boxes.

I cancelled my 24 Hour Fitness membership and joined this gym to get into “wedding shape” in 2017. I lost 30lbs and was able to dance all night on the big day🕺

I was incredibly weak and out of shape, and completely new to CrossFit when I signed up. I participated in the mandatory introductory lessons and then dove into the regular sessions. All the coaches - there was a different coach each day when I was just getting started, and all were extremely helpful and cognizant of my skill level, and really worked with me on form and technique, ramping me up accordingly. Simply the best decision I ever made for what seemed like 5 trainers for less than the price of one! I’ve never injured myself here and that’s a testament to the level of coaching.

And this is more than a gym. More than a community even. New and long-time members are all so open and encouraging. Picking you up when you’re beat down and congratulating all the way thru. These workouts, and warmups, are not at all easy and at the end of the session you walk away accomplished in your journey, and the extra “good job,” fist pump, high five, hug at the end will have you excited for the next.

My name is Dusty and I typically work out at 530a. Most recently I am in the 1200p class. I encourage you to join me 💪

Hillcrest Athletic Club has easily become an integral part of my fitness journey. I’ve been a member for just over two years and do not plan on going anywhere anytime soon. The coaches are all extremely attentive, providing individualized coaching in a group setting that is suitable for your level of fitness. They also organize both fitness and non-fitness related events regularly to engage their community. After going consistently you’ll soon find yourself calling HAC part of the family!!

After several months of looking at different Boxes in the area I decided to give Hillcrest Athletic Club a try, and I’m very happy I did. Since joining it’s been a great community of people. No matter your fitness level the instructors here will take care of you and make sure you get the most from your experience. If CrossFit isn’t for you, then give the Bootcamp class a try!

I took my first ever CrossFit class yesterday and I am so glad that I had the chance to take it at Hillcrest. Not only were they so helpful, informative, with excellent customer satisfaction but they made me feel LOVED and seen! My coach was Crystal (really hoping I remembered her name) and Megan helped me out. Crystal was an absolutely amazing coach and kind person. Pekeia (I hope I got his name right too) was soo sweet and even though he wasn't my coach, helped me feel excited and calmed my nerves about being a first timer.

The class was hard and effective and my coach gave me modifications for a newb. If I lived in SD I would make HAC my gym just because everyone in there was so lovely...including the patrons. Thank you for the warm visit and providing excellent service. You are good people.

I absolutely love coming to workout at HAC! From day one I have felt welcomed by all the coaches and the family of athletes here. Coaches make sure to give appropriate attention and direction. They really want to make sure you succeed without hurting yourself. I also participated in a nutrition challenge here and was very successful! I learned a lot about what diets work well for my body and how to continue after the challenge. Highly recommended dropping in or signing up for one of their nutritional challenges!

I absolutely love coming to workout at HAC. The coaches are so involved, and always finding ways to prove my technique. In addition to the great workout programming, I also participated in the nutrition challenge. It taught me a lot about monitoring what went into my body and through the challenge I was able to reach my goal weight that I had been struggling to get to on my own.

If you are looking for a supportive, challenging organization to transform yourself (in whatever way that may mean for you) then I HIGHLY and SINCERELY recommend HAC! I have been attending the boot camp for the past three months and it has been the best decision of 2019! I am consistently pushing myself with the variety of workouts that are scheduled and the tracking system gives you a great opportunity to see the progress you have made. The staff is super responsive and willing to provide personalized modifications which were essential to my safety and comfortability when I first began. The facilities are always clean and there is an abundance of equipment so that everyone has what they need. Before joining HAC, I had not had great experience in group training and I did not have much direction regarding my fitness training. I am happy to say that I love the people and I am loving my fitness journey!

I have been to numerous gyms in San Diego and this one is definitely my favorite. Reading the other reviews I was really saddened to see people felt that it’s not welcoming because I’ve seen and felt the complete opposite. The coaches go out of their way to introduce themselves (even if they aren’t the one coaching for the day!) and will remember you the next time you come in. It’s actually blown my mind how good their memory is for recall of names. At the beginning of classes there’s usually an icebreaker, especially if there is someone new.

The workouts are definitely for all levels of fitness so no one should ever be intimidated by “crossfit.” The coaches also will offer modifications if you have an injury or to meet your fitness goals—just ask! During the workouts you will get some of the best coaching on form and technique which is huge for injury prevention and something I feel has become a thing of the past in some other gyms.

Bonus...the gym hosts social events and happy hours often. So it’s not just about physical fitness, there is a social wellness component too!

So if you’re interested I would recommend dropping in to a class, if you don’t get the welcoming vibe, try saying “hi, I’m new here” maybe you’ll learn that everyone in that class is new too or just a shy group (because there’s also not really any cliques—unlike other gyms—so it’s definitely not intentional to not break the ice first).

If nothing else, pet the dogs on the dog friendly patio and use the nice brand new bathroom :)

I am absolutely in love with this gym and the staff. I instantly felt at home and welcomed on my first day and it’s been consistent every time I come in at a different time or meet a different coach. Every one of the coaches has been extremely helpful with improving my technique as well as pushing me to do better. One thing I especially love is that I feel no judgment from the staff or even from the other members. I came from a competitive crossfit gym where all of the coaches were extremely degrading and constantly made me feel weak and stupid, so when I moved to San Diego I was hesitant to go back to a crossfit gym. This gym has made me fall back in love with crossfit again and I look forward to coming in every morning! Highly recommend.

In 2 months this gym (and my trainer) has changed my life. I'm not a gym person, don't like the smells and the pressure. But the Hillcrest Athletic Club is so very different. I tried the week of free Crossfit/Boot Camp. Being a "not a gym person" I was pretty nervous about jumping in like that. I have to say, not only was the trainer open and friendly, the whole class was really encouraging. It felt great! I decided to sign up for the Boot Camp and I'm so happy I did. For 15 years I have had knee pain which keeps me from most exercising. But my trainer and my Doctor helped me see I didn't have any quads and this was causing my pain! After 1.5 months at Boot Camp (3 days per week) I have stopped having knee pain. You can't imagine how amazing that feels. And I'm grateful for my trainer because she is so encouraging and challenges me to do things I wouldn't try. But she also totally lets me set my limits. (Shout out to Nikki!) I'm probably still not a gym person, because this place is way better than any gym.

Erik, I had the same experience and the owner said the same thing to me. It is not a "one off". I want to join there but I do not feel welcome at all. I think it could be a great experience. They haven't fired this trainer yet and it is really hurting what could be a great experience. It won't change until this trainer is gone.

Fitness and Cross Fit is a huge passion of mine. I was really excited that this opened up near me. However the moment I walked in I never felt more unwelcome. I came in wanting to know more about signing up and the guy acted like I was wasting his time. Didn't introduce himself didn't want to shake my hand. You would think that if your paying over a hundred dollars a month in membership you would be able to ask some questions such as if I don't know how to do a specific excercise would you be able to show me. His response, "this isn't personal training you need to pay for that" on top of your membership. Look I am not looking for a 20 minute lesson but when you are spending a decent amount of money you want to have not only a great workout but a good relationship with your instructor. You also want to feel welcome. I am a fit 20 something and I felt uncomfortable. I can't even imagine how someone that is looking to loose weight would feel. At the end I was just given the paper with no specific explanation of what the classes included when I asked he just said more sessions. I wish my experience would have been different as I was really looking forward to having something close'

I travelled for 5 weeks in Australia, California and Colorado doing CrossFit everywhere I went - and I must say CrossFit Hillcrest did stand out. I was welcomed so warmly and I loved every session at the gym. I took a few private sessions too with Coach Crystal, which helped me so much in my progress with gymnastics skills. The community is great, the programming challenging and the gym very nicely equipped including all the great knowledge of the coaches! Highly recommended if you are in San Diego!!

I've been a member of a few CrossFit gyms as a result of me moving around for work but I've never felt more welcome than when I first joined CrossFit Hillcrest. Right away the coaches wanted to get to know me and gave me the personalized attention that I needed to succeed and achieve the goals that I set for myself. All of the members are just as friendly and supportive as the coaches making you want to come back and have a great workout each day.

You know that TV show Cheers “where everyone knows your name®?” That’s how I feel when I come in to this box. It’s like I forget what the workout of the day (WOD) is because I pretty much consider everybody to be my friend and that I’m stopping by to hang out with them. What really impresses me, though, is the professionalism of the trainers. I have my bad days—and I’m sure they do too—but they always seem to do their best to give you attention & lifting tips (even when you’re too afraid to ask). And they’re open to suggestions. Really. They change things up so I don’t get bored like when they added yoga or varied their music playlists! And I secretly pretend not to like it if they call me out when they know that I’m being lazy & not working up to my potential. It’s inspiring that they don’t focus on my negatives, but rather encourage me to work on my weaknesses. Their coaching makes me feel like I can really do the exercises I would never do in the regular gym by myself because no one had taught me before. “Make sure to keep that arch on your back,” they’d say. Or “split the repetitions so that you don’t waste too much time and energy.” Or “please clean the floor, your sweat is making the others slip & fall.” Things like that…Ooh! And my favorite part is that I feel like I’m independently working towards my own progress. Except I’m inclined to try new things now because I know I’m being guided by those who have proven their fitness and can lead by example. What’s cool too is that depending on what membership you get, you can go as many times as you want as long as you sign up and there’s room in that class! But I don’t do that often because after one session I’m pretty much heaving on the floor, with the workout completely fresh in my head. And then I’m all like, “Oh yeah. Now I remember.”
