I went to the YMCA as a kid and it makes me happy to still be able to go now as an adult. The staff is plenty helpful. I usually only go once a week to use the weight room. Itβs never too crowded or too noisy. Just enough space, with just enough people. Thank you for still serving the community

What I love about Sac Central YMCA (saving the best for last):
4. Proximity for me is SUPER great!
3. The Staff is SUPER-DUPER great!
2. The facilities are great ... but the BEST thing is:
1. I am part of an organization that benefits and supports the community I live in.

I was assaulted by a lifeguard while I was in the deep end of the pool.
I was at the pool of central YMCA 4/7/2025 around 7:50pm. I entered the open swim area to acclimate to the water temp and was slowly moving from the 4 ft end to the 12 ft end along the rope, not disturbing the other 4 patrons in the area. While I was reaching the deep end, I was struck by a lifeguard with a floatation device and it caused me to choke on water at the 12 ft deep end. I was then told I was not allowed "lap swim" at the open swim area (30 seconds after I entered the pool and moved from one side to the other). I explained that I was not lap swimming but I was not given any other reason to justify the assault.
I'm deeply troubled by how I was supposedly "informed" as children frequent the open swim area and might not be able to casually sustained being struck in the head as "warning". (A reasonable procedure to gain the attention of swimmers would be to whistle). I immediately alerted the front desk about the lifeguard's aggressive behavior but no action was taken.
YMCA has a long history of assault, sexual assault, and other inappropriate behaviors from its staffs and patrons. I have been a full price paying member for 5 years and it has not done much to improve but continue to encourage such culture. I was grabbed and scratched by another patron and I was told I was in the way just a month ago during open swim time. I urge management to take immediate action and review the surveillance camera (if avail. I inquired but was not given an answer if the pool area has been monitored.) Again, the pool holds many group water activities involving young children and learners. It should be supervised by qualified staffs.

This is an overlooked facility in our neighborhood. They have many activities and programs for children as well as exercise classes for adult and seniors. The indoor swimming pool is large, heated and they have open swim for families every day of the week. The facilities are a bit outdated but still very clean and well kept. I highly recommend taking a tour and getting a membership if you live in the neighborhood.

Needs more lap swim availability. Lap exercise has been "cut into." Hours have been taken away for other programs and lanes have been cut away for other programs that are given priority over lap swimmers. The Sacramento YMCA doesn't seem to recognize that 1 lap swimmer membership earns them $700/year. Unless you have a schedule that allows you to swim in the morning (the only time dedicated to laps), you won't likely get a lane

I called the YMCA about their memberships because my 6 year old granddaughter has been begging to go swimming and our hoa pool is closed for the winter. She is autistic and as a precaution we use a reusable swim diaper that actually looks like bathing suit bottoms not a diaper at all. She's not completely incontinent but she is autistic and sometimes she gets a little distracted, but the reusable swim diaper keeps everybody safe. The person who answered the phone was so rude about my questions relating to the reusable swim diaper, essentially she told us we are not welcome at the YMCA and that it was "gross" that I even asked to put a child in a diaper in their pool. She didn't ask questions, she was not empathetic at all. I felt utterly and completely humiliated and excluded. I am so grateful I called ahead, my granddaughter experiences far too much disappointment and hurt due to insensitive, non inclusive environments created by insensitive people who do nothing but reinforce stigma. At least I called and spared the kid another dehumanizing interaction and another disappointment. I've never set foot on the property, I have no idea what it's like although I know the YMCA does good in the world. Just not for our kiddo, it was made perfectly clear her needs will not be accommodated at their facility. I certainly hope that families with special needs children are treated with more dignity and respect on site than I was treated on the phone. In case you care, she is okay, my kiddo got what she needed. I took her to dolphin swim school for a swim, they don't have a single problem with her reusable swim diaper. In fact, they applauded my efforts, and went the extra distance in make us feel validated, included, and part of the human race. I can't say the same thing for Sacramento YMCA. I wish I had written down the name of the person I spoke with but unfortunately I didn't.

I was incredibly surprised walking in here. We live about a block away and I had never considered using it. I had wrongly assumed that the gym was similar to a hotel. I say this because the top floor windows have a row of treadmills and elliptical machines. Little did I know they are a rather large facility with a pool, free weights and multiple group workout rooms. We toured and discovered all they had to offer and joined that day. It was less expensive than other gyms of equal size. The staff are great and the showers, bathrooms and gym area are very clean.

I love the YMCA I joined 6 weeks ago and everyone who works here as an instructor or other staff seems really genuine and chill. The classes are extremely diverse and fun for the price. Also I lost 10 pounds since joining, in contrast to the 0 pounds and minimal health benefits I noticed from the super expensive pilates classes I did for 3 months.

I joined the Sacramento YMCA back in 2005, I went to observe an evening Tai Chi class, I was more interested on the instructor, because of my background in Tai Chi, after observing the class for an hour and a half, I was hooked, this instructor is the diamond in the rough, Iβm still taking his class at the Sacramento YMCA, I there are other instructors, but this instructorβs teaching skills , is a rare quality, his knowledge, teaching techniques, experience, patience and people skills really shine, he is the reason I keep coming to the Sacramento YMCA for so many years ππ

I love the Y. I take group classes nearly every day which include Zumba, head to toe workouts, yoga and pilates. Instructors are great including but not limited to Tia, Molly, Kang, Amy, Elias and Jackie. The social atmosphere and generosity of the Y experience are wonderful. Signed up for couple months of youth swimming. First month was ok, second month was really bad. The teacher for the lessons kept getting switched around, we never knew who our teacher is - usually found out a min before class time by asking around.
Sent multiple messages to Sabrina the coordinator - never received a response. Contacted Ali, the aquatics director, she promised to send me some paperwork and never did. When I inquired on the status, she went quiet. So unprofessional, I expected at least some communication from them. Very disappointed in the pool staff at this ymca and will definitely not sign up for more classes!

I used to go when I was younger and now being a member makes it feel real that I'm getting older.
It's an overall great place to go, most of the staff have ny name memorised so it goes to show how great they are and how committed they are to making sure everyone is safe and happy.
To note, to use the pool you'll have to make a reservation on their website.

A rather dated YMCA with a unique set up. Obviously itβs an old-school cardiovascular room with weight machines OK yet fairly small for a large cities such as Sacramento. Freeway downstairs is most certainly dated in need of several updates. OK pool area and locker rooms with towel service for a small fee. Great customer service and they really do fairly well for the space they have.

I reall wanted to put 0 star.
here summer camp is speechless. no preparing and no organization. they don't tell any information about it before start so I called them in the morning make sure to what I gotta bring and they didnt say anything about swimming suit. I went there first day, I figured out kids are do swimming. so I gotta drive all the way home and pick up swiming suit and drop them off.and they said cancel field trip to ice skating without notice and they said most kids dont know how to skating that is why. omg really? then why they put that on field trip schedule?! their program is disorganized. and I dont feel like I can drop my kids off there safely.

Typical YMCA. No frills physical plant, but it's cheap and the pool is clean even if the changing rooms are definitely not. The front desk staff in the main building are clueless. The pool isn't handicap-accessible and there's very little attempt to help folks who require extra physical assistance.
The children's center is another thing entirely. Great management, but the counselors at summer camp are young and inexperienced. Well-meaning, certainly, but there is absolutely no training or accommodation made for special needs kids, and they are seriously understaffed. 4 year olds can wander off and get into all sorts of trouble, and they give you no notice - not even 24 hours - when your child is terminated for behavioral issues.
That said, some of the staff - Whitney, the counselor/bus driver, and several others - are really dedicated to the kids and are trying to make this a healthy and safe environment. It's just so chaotic that I'm not sure they will be able to. But they are doing their best. It's too bad that they are undone by dozens of young and enthusiastic but totally untrained counselors/caregivers.
If you have an older child who is very well-behaved and contained and doesn't need much guidance or structure, though, this could be an excellent choice for after school or summer camp. They do fun stuff and have a big physical plant. The food is decent, and it's affordable.
