We had an amazing time at Santa Barbara Rock Gym! As a group of beginners, we really appreciated how helpful and patient the staff were, especially Wyatt, who made sure we felt confident and guided us through every step. The variety of routes was fantastic, and the pricing was very reasonable. Overall, it was a super fun day, and we canβt wait to come back!

Great atmosphere, climbing, and bouldering! Routes for everyone, from V0 to V7+ Membership is worth it if you want to go often. Staff is friendly, and helpful. If membership is purchased free classes on bouldering and climbing are available. Worth every penny!

Small but awesome local gym. The setting was creative and challenging. They have a wall that they reset weekly with ungraded slab climbs which is a super cool concept. Love the skylights and open air feel, and dog friendly. Made some friends--friendly community! Also very affordable day pass.

Small but fun gym with a focus on outdoor climbing. The staff was helpful. We enjoyed that they're dog friendly. The parking is in the back near REI so there's a little walk from parking to the gym but not very long. The bathrooms were clean which was great.

Small gym that makes good use of its limited space. It has both top roping (with some auto-belay options) as well as bouldering. Staff are friendly and helpful. This spot is a hub of community and I never go without running into friends. If you are a local, get the annual membership! Such a great business to support.

Great gym with very helpful, knowledgeable employees. Itβs relatively small but thatβs perfect for Santa Barbara. Thereβs a new wall up every single week, keeping everyone excited for the next time they come in. Tons of variety from V0-V9, storage for your things, well maintained bathrooms and great benefits with the membership.

Second time I've gone and it was unexpectedly closed, no email notification or anything, they don't practice the kind of consideration I took for granted from my old climbing gym. For the price of membership it doesn't offer much behind the bare minimum (no gym, no showers, etc). I have yet to see them clean any of their holds. I'd have fewer cares if they charged less but so far I only go because it's all we've got for top roping options in this town.
To add a positive note, I appreciate that they're dog friendly and the music is usually pretty good too.

I climbed here passing through on my way to the airport. Awesome setting and great vibes. I forgot my climbing shoes at the gym and emailed the owner. He was super chill and mailed them to me across the country. Absolute legend.

I've climbed here a couple of times and the routes are good enough for me, as a beginner. It is a bit on the dusty and smelly side, but what annoyed me was their attitude towards my dog. We asked if it was ok to bring him in, to which they said absolutely. He barked a few times, nothing excessive and one of the staff members came over to tell us that they'd ask us to leave if he barks again. I didn't know (and I wasn't informed) this was a rule in this gym, or I would have made sure he doesn't bark in the first place. And ofc, he didn't bark again, but not sure why they made an issue out of it. Left a bad taste in my mouth.

Legendary gym. Been coming 3ish times per week for last year and never run out of fun climbs. Bouldering gets super packed weekday evenings but the vibes and music are always on point, so its still fun. Top rope is never busy so if bouldering is too crazy you can always do that (though wall is a little short they make it work). Couple of neat travers-y lead routes near bouldering section. The top rope and lead classes are also super solid.

Bottom line: if youβve ever been a member at another climbing gym, SBRG will be a disappointment, but at least itβs there. Ownership seems reluctant to make improvements to the business. If youβre just popping in, itβll be a fun diversion.
As someone who has climbed here on average 2 days per week for the better part of 5 years, I can confidently say this is a 2/5 star gym. As others have mentioned, the pads are basically held together by duct tape and hope, and ownership has been made aware of this to no avail. Poor investment in new holds over the years, even pre-Covid, has made setting somewhat stale (setters mostly do a pretty good job with what theyβre given though). It took years of nagging for any kind of fitness equipment to show up (there was no pull-up bar for yearsβ¦ at a climbing gym!) and when it did it was just a pull-up bar/dips/leg raises rack which basically the cheapest thing you could buy and not suitable for commercial use in the slightest. The grips have completely fallen apart in the months since it first appeared. There are now dumbbells to 30 lbs, which is something.
Temperature control is severely lacking, with busy week nights being especially bad. Air quality is often abysmal, what with so many people chalking up with inadequate air handling and filtration. A few roof vents would go a long way, but again, ownership is reluctant to do such improvements. SBRG is also perhaps the last climbing gym in the United States that doesnβt Wi-Fi for customers.

Kind of old and dusty. Routes not very technical, just finger strength. Old, slippery holds. Very high density of routes, hard to see the line.
But unfortunately the only you can get within 60minutes of driving
Edit: Gave it a 2nd try today, still sucks. The walls are packed, its impossible to climb without hitting holds of other climbs. Colors of holds are random, they put tape on every single hold to mark the route which makes it hard to find your route while climbing.
Can not understand why other visitors rate it so good, thats the worst climbing gym I have been in and I climb since 25years.

Great small rock gym that efficiently uses space, however their crash pads NEED a modern update.
I sprained my ankle three months ago very badly, and am still undergoing physical therapy to get it back up to what it used to be.
This is a great gym, just make sure to land in the middle of the pad!

This small gym offers as much climbing as can be expected close to a beach, but at a significant cost to safety. I closely know two people who have sprained their ankles while bouldering in this gym, and have heard of a third person who did too, all within the span of a few months. The bouldering pads don't go all the way to the wall so that the gym can recover 8 inches of climbing height, and when people fall they can roll their ankle on the edge of the pad. I would advise gym-goers to be very wary and I would advise the gym to modernize their pad setup.

Very nice staff - helpful and friendly.
This gym is very small and limited in terms of roped climbing and easier boulder problems.
There isn't really any extra exercise equipment, except for a moon board.
This gym primarily caters to boulderers.

A good little gym with plenty of bouldering and some top rope including a few autobelays. $17 day pass. The settings and ratings are pretty good and accurate relative to many of the Bay Area gyms. The top rope walls arenβt too tall, but the space is utilized well. I spent over 2 hours here and wasnβt bored.
I got in soon after it opened on a Saturday and the bouldering area filled up quick but it wasnβt crazy. Friendly folks of varying skill. Both staff and climbers were all friendly and chill.
This is a good gym for Santa Barbara. I would sign up for a membership if I lived out here.
It would be cool if they expand into a bigger place one day!

My favorite rock gym on the west coast. Iβm not the most experienced climber, nor have I been to a great many of the rock gyms in the world. But, out of all of those Iβve been to Iβd say that SBRG is a clear winner.
The climbs are well balanced, and have a good grading in difficulty.
The VFun grade is unique to SBRG as far as I can tell, but it is one of the things they do really well. The VFuns challenge beginners by introducing new techniques on a variety of (easy) problems, while giving the more experienced climbers a great way to warmup or climb down from more challenging problems.
The staff is helpful and friendly.
My only complaint is that the gym is a little small. Iβd like them to expand, but this is wishful thinking, and probably very expensive.
If youβre stopping in while traveling, you could try to land it on a Tuesday, when itβs buy one get one free day passes, but this is the busiest it gets in my experience.
Happy climbing!

Very fun place to climb. Little children to seniors, beginners to experts, all are made to feel welcome. Friendly attentive staff are serious about safety. Top rope and bouldering routes are set up for all skill levels and are changed regularly so there are always new challenges. I look forward to my weekly visits there with my teenage and adult children. This is a fun place to take visitors from out of town with plenty of close by restaurants and shops.

It was okay, i think i would have been better off bouldering. Im not sure if it was the SNL hipster dude that turned me off to this gym but it feels like a place you go when it rains in sb and thats not often. Good idea not like the gyms in the rocky mountains but hey. You get the feeling the people here have been on a mountain. Great place to dump the kids for an afternoon. But as an adult I probably wont be back.
