Alrighty, I’ve been here 5+ years, so I think that’s enough of time for a review.

Community and people running the gym are amazing. From bouldering league to the meetups to the random couches that appeared this week, I can officially and still somewhat biasedly say this gym is top tier! Luke, Marisa, Seth, Scott, so many others I know by face (I’m sorry I’m bad with names) have all been so gracious with returning my lost phone, purse, shoes, even climbing bag, you name it over the years that I know I walk in sheepishly and they’re like “what did you lose” and help me go find it or look for it at the lost and found. It’s a great place for kids and people to learn about rock climbing. Thanks Sender One! Thanks for still allowing meetups like Ladies Climbing Coalition *shameless plug.* My few asks would be to get a coffee bar (I know tall ask with space) and more night climbing events, which are a fun way to introduce this activity to non climbers.

I had very high expectations for this gym and sadly it didn’t meet them. All my complaints are with the bouldering areas.
1. Why are the mats so hard?? With the height of some of these boulders, I wouldn’t even do a controlled jump down onto these mats. Committing moves near the top of the wall? Hell no.
2. What is the deal with the moonboard and tension board being so high off the ground? With dry fires and uncontrolled falls being super common on moonboard and tension board, I find this to be a safety issue, especially when combined with the hard mats. Also moonboard problems are supposed to be sit starts. You can’t do that with this setup. It also makes it easier to cut feet without dabbing, so you don’t really get an apples to apples comparison with other moonboards. They really need to raise the mats or lower the boards, mostly for safety.

Editing to respond to sender one’s response:
“the 18-inch height off the ground is intentional to accommodate the angles of the routes”
This makes no sense at all. Moonboard recommends a 370 mm (14in) kickboard. To have the first foothold 4 inches higher than the recommended height of the entire kickboard is wack. The 40 degree overhang angle is perfectly accommodated by a normal setup that isn’t an extra foot and a half off the ground.

All of the staff at Sender One are so helpful and welcoming. Evan is a particular standout. He conducted my son’s top rope assessment and was such a pro. Evan made sure that he knew all of the techniques and gave him all the time he needed. Sender One has been one of the nicest surprises of my life. Learning to climb has been a challenge and adventure. What a nice community and what great employees. Thank you, Evan!

Jammer!

-1 star: The coach/staff just let the kids running wild. The coach just watch and do nothing. Someone is going to get hurt eventually. I missed though days before Covid when the coaches really focused on safety and gym etiquette.

2 stars: Doesn’t feel like a community anymore. Going to sender is almost as bad as going to 24h fitness.

3 stars: it’s ok

3 stars: rope area is big

Great place for kids to get into climbing. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Their different locations also have different climbing set ups so its worth it to visit the other locations too. Annual package completely worth it.

I live close enough to go to both this location and the Lakewood one, and I can definitely say that Lakewood is significantly better for rope climbing if you're intermediate and looking for fun routes.

The routes at LAX tend to be pretty uninspired, and prioritize pure strength over technique. Most climbs below a 5.11 are extremely straight forward / up and down, and climbs in the 5.11-5.12 range are very hit or miss. A 5.11d might feel feel more akin to a 5.11a and a 5.11c might be nearly impossible to start if you're 5ft 5in in height or below and not an advanced climber.

Lakewood's rope climbs in comparison feel much more geared towards technique and feel more "short people friendly" without sacrificing interest or difficulty. However one thing that would make both gyms more interesting is if they could introduce more techniques within the 5.9 - 5.10 grades. I've definitely been to gyms where even as an intermediate climber, doing a 5.9 or below climb was enjoyable because it made one think or move a specific way, but was still beginner-friendly because it didn't require large amounts of raw power.

Overall TLDR: These gyms are nice, and offer variety if you can utilize multiple locations, however it might be worth looking into the new Class 5 if you're looking for some interesting climbs and don't need multiple locations. If Class 5 was open before we committed to the annual membership, we might have just switched to that gym.

Truly angry and disappointed in Sender One LAX’s recent decision to let go of their manager. As someone who’s been climbing for over 10 years, I can confidently say I’ve never seen a manager more committed to building a positive, inclusive, and thriving environment. Whoever made this call clearly has no understanding of what makes a climbing gym special. Sender One doesn’t deserve the community he help to built.

@Haylee
Thank you for your response.

I wanted to share a bit more context. After I broke my leg at Sender Westwood last year, the previous manager at LAX went above and beyond in providing support. Throughout my long recovery, he consistently checked in and made sure my visits to the gym were as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. That kind of care made a lasting impression.

My husband and I have been loyal LAX members since the gym opened, and every year we’ve chosen to purchase the annual pass. However, for the first time ever, we hesitated after hearing what happened to the manager— and we’re now seriously considering switching to Class5

The purpose of this message is to let Alice and the leadership team know just how vital the longtime, caring manager and staff have been to the Sender LAX community. These are the people we see week after week for many years— they’re the reason many of us stay.

We’re not asking for a new facility in Bella Terra or Aliso Viejo. We’re asking for continued investment in the people who’ve built something special here.

Sender One LAX has been shifting farther and farther away from being climbing focused ever since their premature expansion of numerous other gyms and more and more corporate policies. They pour so much staff and resources into kid's birthday party on weekends than for the climbing gym members. It's one thing to support youth climbers, it's another to dodge unsupervised kids running around the gym without any parental supervision. They also recently fired staff that wanted to cultivate a supportive environment for climbers- the one staff that always greeted everyone with an infectious positivity and enthusiasm. I'm not sure if the gym plans to replace such staff, but it's pretty obvious staff morale is low ever since (at least from what I could observe, I have not conducted any corporate surveys).
I avoided touchstone gyms initially because I wanted to support a more "local" franchise that supports the climbing community. I chose Sender One because they had big walls, great sets, and gym staff that cared at the time (2020). As they continue to swap these staff members out for corporate yes-men/women, it's pretty obvious their core clientele (aka climbers) is no longer their focus. Their training walls are outdated and redundant, gym equipment is often falling apart, gym mats are patched poorly, and membership fees continue to rise without an obvious increase of compensation to their staff and setters.
I understand profits are important, but it is getting harder and harder to understand Sender One's core values and priorities as a climbing gym.

What an adventure at Sender One LAX! As a first-timer, I didn’t quite know what to expect, but let me tell you, it was an absolute blast.

First off, the vibe is just right – welcoming, energy-buzzing, yet not too overwhelming. It’s the perfect spot for both beginners and seasoned climbers. My son, Xander, had been here once before, but this was my debut. And, despite being a bit of a climbing newbie, I felt right at home.

We were in Sender City, the kids’ side of the place. The routes are diverse and well-set, offering a mix of challenges that kept us engaged (and yeah, a bit sweaty). Speaking of challenges, I’m bracing myself to feel those climbs tomorrow – hello, muscle soreness! But hey, that’s part of the fun, right?

The highlight of our day, though, was meeting another family in the climbing community. Luna and her mom, Lauren, were not just fellow climbers; Luna, like Xander, also has Type 1. They were both there to celebrate their birthdays! We always love seeing a fellow T1D in the wild. First time we’ve met one with the same birthday as Xandy though. It’s moments like these that make places like Sender One more than just a climbing gym – it’s a spot where connections are made.

If you’re thinking of trying out rock climbing, or if you’re a seasoned climber looking for a great community, this is the place to be. Who knows, you might just bump into some amazing people or find a new passion. We’ll definitely be back – with each visit, Xander and I are determined to climb a little bit higher!

Sender One is hands-down one of the best climbing gyms around. It’s a premier facility- spacious, well-designed, and filled with a wide range of creative, challenging routes that are regularly reset to keep things fresh. The gym is always immaculately clean and well-organized, which makes every visit a pleasure.

The staff is top-notch- friendly, professional, and super supportive. My son is on the comp team, and the experience has been incredible for him. The coaching is outstanding, and the community vibe is welcoming and motivating. He’s grown so much as a climber and athlete since joining.

For those just starting out, Sender One also offers excellent intro classes, as well as a fully equipped fitness gym and yoga classes- making it a true all-in-one facility for both body and mind.

Whether you’re new to climbing or have been at it for years, Sender One LAX is the place to be. Highly recommend!

Pay no mind to the blowhards and weenies posting negative reviews. Lack of parking is the only real issue, and only at rush hour. It's LA lol.

Otherwise it's the best gym in the general area, yoga schedule is great, sauna is clean and pretty hot. Compare to Cliffs where the sauna is stinky and barely warm.

One of my favorite climbing gyms, a wide variety of climbs available for both beginners and advanced climbers. There’s two floors of bouldering with top rope, lead climbing and a speed climbing wall. I’ve taken two classes here and the instructors are amazing, Keigin taught me to crack climb and Marisa taught me how to Lead Climb. I highly recommend their classes to anyone looking to get started climbing or advance their skills.

This was my first climbing gym ever and it has become my standard for what climbing gyms should be.

Everything always feels clean, safe, and well-maintained. Parking is free out in the lot or in the street (but beware the 10pm cut off). The instructors are friendly and helpful. There are many top line routes, a speed training section, two levels of bouldering, and even a kids party section.

The crowd is diverse, of all skill-levels and there are definitely pros/regulars that are amazing to watch. As a beginner, I didn't feel intimidated. There's a big emphasis on community here too, with meetups, social nights, and they also just hosted a Paralympic climbing event. They offer yoga classes too.

I also enjoy the gym area where I can get some cardio and basic weights in. Locker rooms have showers and a sauna. Overall, a top-notch gym!

Great gym. I took a lead test, which went by reasonably fast, but still cost me around 40 minutes all in all. It's free, however, and you don't have to schedule it or anything. Great for a visiting climber like me.

The really high walls (requiring a 45m rope) will get you pumped. Nice route-setting and quite a lot of routes, most for toproping, but you can lead most of these as well. Quite extensive bouldering area as well.

I'll be back here, even if I am just flying through LAX, as it is super close.

Love this gym and have been coming for years. Whether you’re looking for a quick workout sesh in the gym or full on climbing on one of the many walls, this gym has it all including a well appreciated sauna. The staff are also very nice and always helpful. I also very much enjoy all the yoga classes included in the membership.

Of all the many positives this gym has to offer there’s only one complaint and that’s cleanliness. The bathrooms appear to rarely get deep cleans including the sauna. The gym area is also lacking in the clean department but overall the climbing areas are acceptable. With this one improvement I believe the overall quality of the gym would greatly be improved.

Large climbing gym with boulder walls and lead climbing. Came here on a Saturday afternoon and bouldered. The bathrooms are spacious and there are showers. The gym has a fair amount of equipment. Parking is available around the building (one way street) but if it’s full, there’s plenty of street parking as well. There’s a good mix of beginner as well as harder routes, but I felt that even the V0s and V1s were a bit spicy. You need to sign a waiver online beforehand. There are Groupons available for climbing classes which include a gym pass.

Great place. Wether you are looking for fund day or a place for kids Birthday party this is a great place. Most kids have a lot of fun and enjoy their time. The staff are very friendly and attentive. They are very reasonably priced and have great packages.

The only down side is the 2 time slide rule weather they are busy or not which does not make sense. When they are not busy, the staff is standing there doing nothing, it make sense to allow the kids to use the slide more 2 times. Just my opinion.

I have climbed my self a few times and it is a lot of fun and is a workout.

In my opinion this is the breakdown. Although because of the sliding rule they really deserve a 4 but I am giving them a 5 anyways.

5 For the venue
5 for Staff
2 for the Slide rule

What makes this place phenomenal is that there are two floors of bouldering. The 2nd level bouldering area is under the same high ceiling as the tall climbing walls, so the atmosphere is absolutely fantastic.

Down side is that the afternoons are overwhelmed with after school youths climbing whenever and wherever they please.

The biggest downside to me is that the original clock that was up at an optimally visible location (for bouldering and system board areas) was moved to a much less convenient location where one cannot quickly glance at the time.

Friendly staff , lots of space for gym and warming up .
Walls for lead and top rope look truly spectacular.
Boulder wise , I find them a tad unbalanced compared to boulder only gyms and a bit boring .
Route setters have made an effort to set up lots of V0-V2s for learning techniques but they occupy most of the vertical walls leaving the rest of higher Vs on the overhang sections .
A traverse would have also been a nice addition .
Apart from that definitely solid routes .

Me and my girlfriend were excited to go Sender One for the first time since rock climbing interests us. We were waiting on line waiting to get helped and the only female receptionist there was just skipping us and helping out everyone that was walking in. We had to get real close for her to realize that we needed help. We had trouble with our Groupon so we didn’t end up purchasing anything. We came back a couple minutes after to ask some questions about their prices and that same receptionist was giving us a very dirty look like she didn’t want us to be in there. Never returning back. Sender One LAX is a serious, tall, and cavernous indoor climbing gym.
With multiple climbing walls and forms.
The also have an okay gym area and an excellent separate children’s area.
Additionally, the gym sells snacks and shirts and has shoes for rent or purchase.

This place is awesome and love it however my negative review is because I quit my membership during the covid pandemic (which they said they they wouldn’t charge during). Now I have been noticing $10 holding charges each month during pandemic (yeah its still going on in LA) yet I havent been going to gym and just noticed this randomly going back multiple months without approval. I emailed them several months that i quit and remove my credit card. But these shady charges keep coming through. Shame that business practices get in the way of a great facility.

This place is awesome. This was my first time ever doing this and the staff members were super helpful. They gave us a tour of the place and gave their recommendations on where/how to start for someone whose never been there. I will definitely be coming back with my kids.

Great rock gym! Feels like Chuck E Cheese— tons of fun and people everywhere. Excellent place to go if you don’t know anything about climbing!

The staff are very helpful and are sure to correct you if they think you’re in danger of breaking one of the many safety rules. A great place for beginners indeed.

Routes are often long, somewhat gymnastic, and have predictable movement patterns. Fight the burn! The rope routes don’t change too often (most seem to last 1-2 months), which is nice for those of us who travel but want to “get the send” before routes change!

One downside though is the atrocious parking situation. Plan on circling the building numerous times, or get lucky. Apparently the $$$ membership doesn’t cover parking too...

Can’t have it all I suppose!

EDIT:
The scene at this rock gym is better suited for entertainment and child bday parties than it is for outdoor training...

If you’re serious about climbing and live in the area, read between the lines: this probably isn’t the gym for you. Unfortunately, it’s also probably your best option... for now.

Or just go to LA Fitness! It’s certainly more affordable.

No parking, closing to members for multiple days straight for comps, expensive, climbs are way soft (8 grades softer than outside), requiring auto lock belay device, but i guess they do have good climbing for a gym.

The staff here is excellent! Especially Felix! We came in trying to show my three year old nephew a good first climbing experience. He told me he takes his nephews climbing too and gave us a free guest pass to show our little guy around. Thanks again felix! And the entire staff is helpful here as well! Furthermore it’s just an amazing facility that has everything one would need including bouldering, top rope, lead walls, extensive training area, and a good square footage of general gym machines. Kids area is excellent

The first thing you see when entering the gym is striking lead wall, “the torch”, tall and overhanging - an excellent tool to build power-endurance. But that’s about all there is good about the gym while shortcomings are many, I’ll arrange them in the order of inconvenience they represent.
1. Lack of parking. As of the end of July 2019, when a neighboring office told SenderOne to stop using and abusing their parking lot, you’re likely to find yourself driving around waiting for someone to depart. This is especially inconvenient in the evening - the busiest time and if you park in the street, which is also not easy, you’ll have to leave before 10pm if you don’t want to get a parking ticket.
2. Plastic floor cover in climbing areas. It’s bad for two reasons: leaves all the dust hanging in the air and gets the soles of your feet black, even if you’re wearing flip-flops. This plastic cover is the main reason why you end your day coughing out gray goo while trying to get your feet clean. Gyms that use carpet in climbing areas are way better in this sense.
3. Poor bouldering walls and poor footholds in bouldering areas. The walls are short are the area is small, the combo that does not facilitate great training. And the footholds: dear route setters, in bouldering, plastic holds without a pronounced edge get polished within a couple of days turning routes into skating ground. How fun it is - to see your foot flying off a polished decal getting abrasions on your legs and busting your shoulder or a finger at the same time!
4. Stingy management. It shows in many details: all the prices are higher than anywhere else, shortage of locker room closets that will force you to change in your car (provided you managed to find parking), press and hold water taps in locker rooms and so on. Seriously, having to keep pressing that damn lever on water tap to wash your hands doesn’t feel right in the gym that charges $89 a month.

Finally got to cross this off my bucket list. Although I may have found a new hobby. Took the hour session Intro to climbing class. I would recommend everyone do so before starting out on the floor.

I thought I could get away without taking this beginning class. Like how hard could it be to climb, but no, spend the money. They sometimes have a Groupon if you're tight on cash.

The instructor will show you how to properly tie an 8/ fishermen's knot, how to belay and other tips you will need to be safe while climbing. These are all life saving safety precautions, so please don't try to skip this session.

After, the hour beginning session, they will allow you to climb with a partner at no time frame. Went with a friend and we took the hour session then stayed 3 hours more to climb. We had so much fun and tried some of the other levels.

Other tips, I would suggest to get there 15/20 minutes early, as I went during a busy time, so it took about 5 minutes to find parking. There is parking located all around the building and on the street. You will also need time to sign a waiver and put on climbing shoes that they provided as part of that fee.

One more thing, loved the staff and the instructor. All very nice! The instructor was very attentive, upbeat and made sure we properly were retaining the material before he let us climb on our own.
Would recommend this class to all and can't wait to go back and climb!

Great for lead climbing. Top roping can be frustrating with a ton of kids running around and in front of you when belaying. If they could keep the kids in a separate area, would have joined but opted for Cliffs of Id instead.

I've been to a few gyms across LA, Denver, and Las Vegas, and Sender One is my favorite. Nice (and tall!) facility with super friendly staff. TR/Lead and bouldering walls are rotated often enough that I don't get bored, and I go around 3 times a week lately. I've been liking the yoga and core classes.

Small complaint is using iPads to sign forms and waivers. They suck and take forever - I don't know why this is a trend. Get some keyboards! : D

Hands down the best gym for rope climbing in LA. Tall walls, variety of climbing - lots of overhang/vertical climbing, but also a few slab/stem/arete sections as well. Routes are set fairly often - I go about 3 times a week and between ropes and bouldering, there's only a few days a month that I run out of new climbs.

Top rope here is definitely better than their bouldering, but man is this facility impressive. I'm a Touchstone guy, but I'll still drop dollars to come here for an occasional session. Don't get the impression that the community around the gym is as tight know as some other gyms, but I've also only been here 5 times; might be sample bias

I'm a member here and visit 2-3 times a week. The size of the facility, parking, and the accessibility are what make it stand out. One of the better rope gyms in the US (have visited 20+). Route setting is consistent in quality, and offers great grade spread on the lead walls. Lead sessions here almost feel like a day at the crag. Very happy to have this as a home gym.

I think the boulder setting could be improved. Embracing volumes would enhance the setters ability to create diversity of movement, and trend away from a focus on difficulty through power - toward difficulty through complexity. The grade spread seems off, too. In sum: it's not bad by any means, but somewhat repetive and, overall, a far cry from world class. I get a lot more from boulder sessions in many other gyms I've been to.

Came on a 3 day visit to LA and had to check out Sender One. This is the best climbing gym I've gone to in the last 10yrs. I climb a lot in the Phoenix metro area and we have nothing that even compares. The 2-level bouldering area is solid fun and you can practice topping out on the second level. There's a whole area dedicated to training with hang boards and campus boards. But the main and most fun feature is their 60+ ft walls for ropes. The rope area is excellent. You normally can't find walls this tall unless you climb outside. You will need a lead cert to fully enjoy it though, but still there are plenty of TR routes that are plenty tall. There's also a workout area and daily yoga classes (comes with your day pass) and a crazy looking kid area that I'd want to go in myself (gotta pay extra for that). The gym layout, natural lighting, and attention to details really make it very enjoyable. I ended up going back the next day.
Price of day pass was pretty steep, but it was so much fun I'm looking forward to coming back with my AZ climbing crew.

This gym is great if you're looking for roped climbing. If you want to boulder and come frequently, you might run out of routes (at your level) as the number of bouldering routes is small (at least compared to Cliffs of Id in Culver City, where I am a member).

The facility is nice and they have a dedicated kids area, though it costs a fair amount. Unfortunately, kids under 12 do not climb for free, as they do at Cliffs of Id.

I have been climbing here for about 3 weeks now and it's one of the best indoor climbing walls I've been on. They have tons of well set routes for all levels, and the place is big enough where even if there is a lot of people there you'll have no problem finding a route for yourself to climb.
Their bouldering is very extensive and hold plenty of routes ranging from beginner to professional.
