This place is pretty clean, very spacious, and offers variety of routes suitable for both beginners and seasoned climbers.

I went with a couple friends and we have three kids under 10 yo with almost zero experience. Staff Lainy was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, guiding the kids through the basics and ensuring safety at every step. Definitely a place we would go back to!

it is expensive and not very flexible.
They will offer you discounts for classes you already taken.
There is no flexibility in attending a make us class for the climbing academy:(

Sauna temperatures in the climbing gym with no airflow in the bouldering area! Luckily there are some fans over the roped climbs. Avoid the bouldering by the metal door in the hallway, unless you like being cooked alive. At one point I got dizzy and thought I was going to pass out. The only room with working AC was the locker room. The Campus boards are poorly setup, unless their intension is for you to smash your knee every time you use it. The weight room is a closet. The cable on the lat pull down cannot actually be pulled down all the way to the chest of a short person, making it pretty much worthless. The treadmill, I hopped on to warm up, was PITCHED FORWARD, and didn't feel level until I had it up to 2 or 3 degrees. I also encountered, as some of the other reviewers alluded to, very loud "poorly supervised children", and very nearly went Super Mario on one who ran beneath me just as I was about to drop off a problem.

I can't say anything about the separate training center, as it was not open at the time.

On the plus side, they have lead climbing, which most other nearby gyms do not, and these ones are actually decent length! Additionally there is good density of problems in the small bouldering area, and the front desk staff were pleasant and tried to be helpful.

If they fixed the climate issues, I'd rate them higher, but until they do, I can't see myself returning.

While this update is massively overdue, Meadow went out of their way and above and beyond to address the complaints I had with my second visit to Sender One (post intro to climbing class), and gave a solution that I was very happy with regarding my injuries and the Sender One punch pass.

The lack of response to my initial customer service email was not due to poor customer service, however a failure in their email-forwarding system/vendor. Not something you can really blame a business for when their system crashes and doesn't resume properly.

To update my review:
Climbing: 5/5
Customer Service: 5/5

I did attend a yoga class; I should have done more research into the beginner/intermediate levels and had a small bit of knowledge built before attending. It is definitely not for me due to my own choice (not related to the experience I had here), but don't let that turn you away from trying it.

While I have yet to return due to a lengthy recovery of lower leg injuries, we would not hesitate (and absolutely hope to) return to Sender One Climbing soon enough to go climbing once again.

My partner and I both highly recommend. We came in as 0 experienced indoor/outdoor climbers and had a really great time.

Judging only the bouldering part:
All holds where blacken and oily as if setting had not been changed for months or the hold were not washed between sets: this was clearly uninviting and not acceptable given the very expensive day pass rate, not counting that the bouldering area was actually quite small.

I had a great first experience at Sender One Climbing. It's a large variety of climbing practices that anyone can do, and their kids section stands out. Staff was super friendly touring the place around and helping with waivers. I highly suggest all families, friends, and children visit here if you are interested in rock climbing. Thank you, and God bless Sender One Climbing & Sender City!

Facility is good but serious climbing can only be done on weekday mornings. Most other times turns into a children’s madhouse. Major safety and vibe issue. Trying hard while worrying if you’ll land on a kid isn’t that fun.

This is maybe the best climbing gym I have been to, and I have been to a bunch of climbing gyms across the country.

Pros:
Clean - one of the cleanest gyms I have been to.

Super friendly and accommodating staff (we were visiting from out of town and able to schedule a lead check during our only visit - granted, we were there first thing in the morning and it was not crowded).

Decent size gym with plenty of boulder problems as well as top rope and lead routes. The ice cream cone feature is what drew us in, and it did not disappoint. The nearby arch is also a cool feature.

The kids area (Sender City) is amazing, and not just for kids. I imagine this space really helps kids gain climbing skills and confidence that translate to the regular climbing area. Kudos to Sender One for finding a way to have a kids area that helps prevent kids from running around the climbing gym, undoubtedly keeping everyone a little safer. Our adult group enjoyed the space as well - everyone should try it once, regardless of age.

I can't comment on the training gym across the parking lot - we just visited once to do some climbing.

Also, we went early in the morning, and the place was not crowded at all. I cannot comment on what the place is like in the afternoon. If it is like most climbing gyms, it probably gets crowded.

Noob and group review:

Came here with a group of 12 and it was a really fun activity to get into! Of course, rock climbing gyms aren't cheap but it's what all the cool kids are doing. Top roping feels a little bit more doable as it's quite assisted and there are more options for climbing.

Bouldering is always more daunting and there are less options for noobs like me.

Overall, the course to learn how to belay was easy and the whole experience was enjoyable.

I've only been in the kids section so far, but it was great for my 8 year old! He was scared to go to the top at first, but then he wouldn't leave until he had done it.

The one day pass is pretty pricey, a 5 day stamp pass is a much better deal. Everyone working here was super nice and helpful and the facility was really clean.

Review scope limited to the Intro to Lead Climbing class only.

tldr: On 6/12th and 6/19th, my friend and I took the Intro to Lead Climbing class offered at the Santa Ana Sender One (SO) and found the instructional quality lacking and the learning environment distracting & unsafe. Most importantly, we felt ill-prepared for the lead certification test and didn't see a path forward. So we reached out to the SO management with our concerns. As a remedy, we were offered supplemental private instructional opportunity, at no additional cost. The instructor (Czar Goss, Training & Development Manager), who normally doesn't teach lead instruction, turned out to be a fantastic lead instructor. As a result, we became lead certified on 7/12th and feel much better prepared to lead climb/belay.

However, I'm steering my friends to take the Intro to Lead Climbing offered by my other gym (another local chain climbing gym with a much cheaper membership). Why? Cuz it's cheaper, offers 4 additional instructional/practice hours compared to SO, and you're certified by the end of 9 hours of lead instruction. Afterwards, go to SO and test out for free for lead cert. No brainer.

Here's the reason for the 3.5 stars (an average of the following):
2 stars - Disappointing initial experience with the Intro to Lead class
5 stars - Remedy provided by SO management

*In case you're still reading and interested in further details:

The class instruction (two 2.5 hr sessions) did not cover the verbal commands (except for "tension" and "falling") though communication is such an important aspect of lead climbing. (Our supplemental private instruction covered "clipping", "clipped", "slack", "watch me", "got you", "falling", "watch your leg"...)

There was very limited practice time on the wall, totaling @ 3 mock lead climbs/belays and 3 falls/3 catches. During the fall & catch practice, key instructions were not provided to some participants and/or not in a timely manner.

No initial vetting of participants to ensure that everyone met the prerequisites, which resulted in the participation of a climber with only 1 month of climbing experience, w/o fundamental knowledge of tying a figure 8 knot, properly load and operate the gri gri, take in slack in a timely manner, and being lowered safely by leaning back on the harness and letting go of the holds. Not only did this result in delaying the class significantly, but it put all the participants at risk. When being lowered, this person started downclimbing rather than letting go, and when the instructor told them to let go, they did so after much hesitation. With some rope slack introduced from the downclimbing, which confused the belayer, when they finally let go, they experienced a free fall of 10 to 15 feet before the fall was arrested by the belayer on a gri gri.

Also, the location where the mock lead was practiced (near the pillar) was very distracting and unsafe because we were constantly dodging lead climbers being lowered around us and their ropes falling over our heads. Often we would miss a portion of the instruction because we were frequently looking over our heads when someone shouted.

One participant in our group of 4 was taking the class for the second time (told at full price). He was unable to get lead certified because he couldn't find a partner to get sufficient practice after the initial set of instructions was completed, and over time, felt unconfident so signed up for a refresher. Ideally, the classes should have been set up such that all participants would get certified by the end of the instruction, like at my other gym.

In an email, SNA SO management indicated that they will be meeting with the instructors to figure out the best way to screen students' prerequisites. Additionally, they will be reviewing the lead class curriculum & provide instructor refresher to ensure consistent instruction. Until this happens, I won't be recommending the Intro to Lead offered at SNA SO.

I'm terribly afraid of heights but the ropes gave me more confidence and the worker was extremely kind and reassuring.
I didn't get her name but it was awesome and really enjoyable even though I felt like I was dizzy and scared as a beginner.

I would definitely come again, they had a deal that was 5 entries / $59?, we didn't get it but that's definitely a great deal!

I’d like to address the comments below about Sender One being antisemitic because an employee was wearing a keffiyeh, which is a traditional headdress from the Middle East. There is nothing antisemitic about a piece of traditional clothing, and I am disappointed by people in the climbing community being more offended by a scarf than by Islamophobia and violence against Palestinians.

Personally, I love seeing people at Sender One wearing keffiyehs because it shows me that people in the climbing community are aware of issues that affect marginalized climbers! I love the solidarity it represents, and related, I love the Sender One affinity nights that create safe community spaces for people from different backgrounds.

It’s unfortunate that some people are offended by attire from other cultures, whose meaning has become subverted. I assure you the people wearing the keffiyehs did not mean any harm to Jewish climbers! They just want to express their solidarity with a community experiencing violence, and there should not be anything wrong with that. What happened to freedom of expression?

Absolutely appalling experience. Despite being loyal customers for nearly two years, the blatant display of anti-Semitism at Sender One Santa Ana has left us feeling unwelcome and deeply uncomfortable. Since the Middle East conflict erupted, one of the workers has been wearing a scarf that promotes anti-Semitic views, creating an atmosphere of fear and exclusion for Jewish patrons like us. We raised our concerns with the manager, expressing our distress and disappointment, yet nothing has been done. The fact that this worker continues to wear the offensive scarf speaks volumes about the company's tolerance of hate speech and discrimination. We will not be returning, and we urge others to reconsider supporting a business that condones such behavior.

Extremely disappointed with Sender One Santa Ana. As regular climbers, we expect a safe and welcoming environment to enjoy our time. However, the recent sighting of a worker wearing offensive attire promoting hate and terror is beyond unacceptable. Not only does it ruin the experience for everyone, but it's also deeply saddening, especially for the Jewish community. As a Christian who believes in spreading love and acceptance, seeing such behavior from a staff member is distressing. Management needs to take immediate action to ensure that hate has no place in their establishment.

My kids had a really fun time at Sender City. The Staff was very positive, helpful, and encouraging, which is great if your kids are a little tentative. The activities were challenging enough to make it fun for adults to participate with the kids. The auto belays allows you to quickly go from course to course, so my kids were pretty tired at the end of the hour. The one day pass is a little pricy but they have a five day pass that was more affordable.

A good climbing gym if you like top rope. The price is more expensive than Hangar but it seems to be the only top rope gym in OC so you will just have to bear with it. I did the 5 punch for $70 a pretty good deal. I liked the intro belay class but the problem is you will have to find a belay partner after that. I couldn't find anyone so I ended up doing bouldering for the rest of my 5 punch. The bouldering area doesn't have a lot of jugs. There are a lot of children running all around in the area so be careful when you drop. The route setting is not as good compared to Hangar. Overall, if you do top rope in OC this is good enough. For bouldering I recommend somewhere else.

Incredibly knowledgeable, super professional, letting us know exactly what he was looking for so that we can stay as safe as possible and pass the test. Unrelated to the test specifically, he also gave some great recommendations for rope management, and other resources related to climbing in general. Adrenaline junkie? Want to to feel high? Well you're going to have to earn it. You've got the vast bouldering walls, the top line rock climbing, and lead climbing routes here. We signed up the night before for the intro course at Sender One. Don't forget to sign your waivers for your life! We took the intro to climbing class with Khoi our instructor. He was great at teaching us 'the ropes.' We got taught the knots, the gri gri mechanism, and the appropriate climbing vernacular. I felt knowledgeable enough to go out into the top lines with the wife and belay and climb safely. I would recommend sender one for any new climbers who are taking the intro course and the experienced so you can experience what sender one and its walls has to offer!

Let's go!!

The overall experience could have been better. I felt like the facility was crowded, and we had to wait a while for certain climbs. The slide in sender city is only open for twenty minutes, none of my kids were able to get on...so that was disappointing. The helmets smell terrible, like they are full of germs. I do see that they spray lysol on them, but it clearly isn’t enough. I dont know, I really wanted to enjoy the experience and for $30 per person for an hour, I dont feel that I got my money’s worth.

Great rock climb place! Really enjoyed the routes, nice designs. The only thing is there was this one time I was belaying my friend (he’s still climbing and up in the sky) and this staff lady come distracting me telling me my PBUS is not right and this is my last warning or she’ll take away my belay certificate. I was like this is insane she’s literally the bigger hazard here distracting an ongoing belay. But still, doesn’t change the fact that it’s a great gym with lots of fun.

The staff was prompt, professional and kind. My daughter had sole fears and apprehension and Adithi spebt time calminf her. Also other staff members were great. There was a guy with long hair ( sorry I forgot his name) that did breathing exercises to help a kid gain confidence and jump down from one of the climbs. I was really impressed with the kid friendliness of the staff.
I just wish it was cooler in there as it was quite warm in the climb room. I am not sure if the ac was down or if it was because of the number of climbers.
Over all very clean place and enjoyable experience.

I visited Sender One to boulder while visiting Orange County. It’s an ok gym, I would be reluctant to get a membership here but great for a visit!

Pros:
β€” definitely catered to kids/new climbers. The kid area was really cute
β€” Decently sized gym, variety of climbs

Here’s some feedback I have:
β€” They were renovating the bathrooms and had two all-gender restrooms open. They were kinda dirty, didn’t feel super clean. There was pools of water on the bathroom floor which felt kinda bad haha
β€” The mats are kinda hard compared to other gyms. They don’t have much bounce and I didn’t feel comfortable climbing to the top of walls and falling from that height. My friend was saying that the actual padding thickness seemed thinner than his gym too. I’m used to sinking into a mat as I walk β€” def felt more stiff than that!
β€” It’s extremely hot. I wish they had more fans. I’ve never felt hot climbing at other gyms but was legit sweating through my pants!! They had some small fans around the space but they were turned off.
β€” I wish they specified two hand start vs one hand start.
β€” I wish they put their climbs on KAYA so I can track >:)

It's pretty huge. The kids section is super cute. There's a moonboard, campus board, weight training, other training equipment, etc. so you're gonna get pretty much everything. They have a huge wall for top rope and lead but I mostly bouldered when I went there so I can't comment on that. The setting is okay but I wish that some of the easier routes could be more interesting. I enjoyed climbing inside the bridge a lot. Also wish that there were more lights because sometimes it was a bit dark in some parts of the walls and I couldn't see very well. Overall pretty expensive so I'd say it's a great place to boulder for the day but I can't say I want to get a membership here just because of the price and that I simply enjoy a more intimate environment.

I'm a climber of 7? years and a reluctant member of this gym... It's got tall walls, routes are set pretty frequently, there's a few cracks, and there's classes, fitness center, and training tools (campus board, hangboards, 2 moonboards and a kilter board). But it's clear that this gym prioritizes attracting new climbers over pushing existing climbers to get better. How so?
1) The grades are soft, the setting is boring especially on ropes. Yes, gyms are softer than outside, but Sender's grades are a whole number grade (maybe more) softer than other gyms. Even the cone, until you get to like... 11c/d, it's just a jug haul, albeit a steep one.
2) During peak Covid restrictions, members were restricted to one single 2-hour session a day, and long before members were allowed to climb for longer (2 hours is not enough!!!), non-members and new people (aka the $$$-makers) were returning to the gym. Meanwhile, other gyms like PG prioritized letting members climb for longer sessions first. I feel like this was a clear signal showing who and what Sender prioritizes.
3) Why are the training center's hours so restrictive? On top of that, if the kids (aka more $$$ for the gym) are training on the boards, then good luck getting any time on the boards during your reservations.
4) They're always churning through classes and clinics (which is great)... but they're misguided. There's "adult training club" and a plethora of classes for improving movement and technique.... This takes us back to #1 - why not just set better climbs that teach new people something?
5) Finally, a petty one... Why are you guys always promoting your new merch??? Yes you're a business, but you're not a clothing store. You're a gym.

That said, I do enjoy climbing here and always have a fun session. The staff is nice! The climbers are nice! The facilities are nice! I do also wish the other locations weren't all the way in LA...

Their COVID mandates are irrational. Only vaccinated adults can enter even thought both vaccinated and unvaccinated can get and spread COVID but the vaccinated could not show symptoms and have milder symptoms (supposedly) while the unvaxxed will have more severe so in other words the ones who are protected and can still spread the virus while not showing symptoms and can spread it to little kids are fine to go in but the ones who will show symptoms aren’t. Also if we think you’re more vulnerable we will force you to be safe abd not allow you to come in against your will but if we believe you’re protected then you’re a good boy and can enjoy our faculty. It just makes no sense to me at all. I won’t be going there ever again

I belong here. Not sure why I’ve never rated it. Great place, welcoming and friendly staff, welcoming and friendly climbers.

I mostly boulder, and the route changes are about right (largish section of wall every Wednesday). Top rope is also fun. I haven’t learned how to lead climb yet, but that section of the wall looks super fun.

Weight room is large and usually empty.

Classes (yoga, etc) seem popular, but I’ve never gone.

Had a great family visit at Sender One. It's nice that you don't have to be an expert to enjoy the visit. We brought our kids, one was celebrating a birthday. They really enjoyed it and parents are allowed to watch or if you pay for admission, join in the climbing. A one hour session is plenty if you don't climb regularly. It is a good exercise activity for the kids. They broke a sweat but still has a lot of fun. Adults must fasten safety ropes to all kids 13 and under. Having 3 kids, it was quite busy to attach and detach each child between climbs.

I climbed at Sender One several times a week for a few years. It's got a great variety of climbing options, from easy bouldering walls to challenging top rope and lead routes. I loved attending yoga classes, there, too!

We moved up to the PNW a few years ago, or we'd still be regulars there. It's been hard to find a climbing gym that even comes close.

Great climbing gym for adults and Sender City is an awesome place for kids! The auto belays in the kids area make it really easy for kids to get climbing. Plus there is enough variety that in an hour most kids will feel challenged and not bored. Would be awesome to see some more difficult routes in the kids area to support kids as they are progressing. Sometimes the younger ones don't want to go into the adult area, plus at Sender City they could use the auto belays.

Been a member here for ~1.5 years, figured I would share my thoughts with anyone looking to become a member.

Good: Lots of parking, VERY well maintained facility, high walls (by OC standards anyway), yoga classes are awesome, weight area is pretty much always empty, equipment is top notch.

Bad: Children EVERYWHERE, routes setters are not very creative / changes pretty infrequently, you can only belay with a gri-gri (weird), no auto belays.

Ugly: 90+ Dollar monthly fee + initiation fee + yearly price raises + NO guest passes (Really guys, not even one a month?) + pausing your membership is a pain (doctors note + you still have to pay like 10$/monthly to not climb LOL)

Honestly it's a great gym, but their pricing model is sooooo greedy, which is ultimately what drove me out. If price is no object then this is the gym for you.

The gym itself was clean and nice, with pretty tall rope climbing walls. They have a nice selection of holds and have soft grades. The route setting was okay but there were a few fun ones out there. They also have the 10 meter speed wall and the ending of the 15 meter speed wall alongside it which was great. Overall a good gym.

Pricey and one of the more unfriendly climbing communities. Least approachable top rope partners I've ever ran into, and unfortunately no autobelays otherwise if you end up there by yourself. Climbs are long which is nice, the 4 or 5 cracks are great to have, but the routes are typically bland and overtly soft ratings. There's usually at least one or two out of the box routes that are awesome though, so there's definitely at least one solid route setter there. Bouldering is not my thing, so, I have no comments there. Basically I would not recommend it if you don't have a dedicated partner for the day and you're not specifically training for endurance. Chris, I truly respect you, your gym has a long way to go however.

Friendly staff and people overall. I used a groupon last week for a one hr lesson. Me and my friend were lucky to get a coach to ourselves. She was awesome and helpful and patient. After the lesson we wanted to climb more and as we sat and waited for our turn on the beating section I noticed the instructors were so helpful towards climbers that weren't part of a class or lesson. Customers were also friendly and courteous.
Place also offers access to their gym, yoga classes, etc. Which is neat as well.
I wish they just had a more adventurous bouldering section. 89 a month seems high too...

Best climbing ever accompanied by the worst management. These fools have harassed my friends and I for almost a year now with bogus late fees and false charges. Another thing that annoys everyone is the way they set routs. The routs are amazing but they will block off literally half of the bouldering area while they are only working on one rout!!! You really need half of the god damn gym just to test one rout?!?!? And if they aren't setting routs that day, you can guarantee to see a gym full of mostly annoying children in huge group classes hogging the walls, cutting off your rout, running up and down the gym, or playing with chalk. The price for a membership is way too much for this BS. It's gotten so bad that my friends have begun pulling their memberships and I dont blame them. I'll do the same If things dont change in the near future. I hope for the best.

Just tried to go climb for the first time today, no complaints on the staff just for management. Ive been to a few climbing gyms before and everyone I have visited doesn't require you to tie your own Knott's. I'm not complaining about that I actually kind of enjoy it and I see it reduces your liability but you need to offer some sort of class after intro class hours end. I arrived at 8:30 which was too late to get into an intro class and I had already payed and been set up(was fully refunded btw thank you) but the problem was my sister and I enjoy top rope and we have always used carabiners. So instead of offering to certify me I basically just get turned away after planning my night around this. The solution I request so it doesn't happen to someone else is to offer a short cert. I'd have payed $10 to get a certification and a short 15 minute course to tie Knott's to your spec. They don't seem too difficult and I'm sure it doesn't take up much of the intro course hour that you normally require. I will sign up and come back, but it would be nice to be able to have that as an option for those of us used to other gyms. Luckily, my neighbor happens to be a rock climbing expert and is going to show me how to tie anything I was required to know without paying for your into course.
