I’m sharing this anonymously because women deserve to be safe.
My experience at this studio left me deeply uncomfortable. What I initially thought was kindness and mentoring from the studio owner gradually shifted into inappropriate comments, unsolicited physical contact, and emotional dynamics that left me feeling confused, pressured, and unsure of how to respond.
At first it felt flattering, but over time it became clear that this wasn’t a misunderstanding — it was a pattern. Later, I learned that other women had experienced similar boundary-crossing behavior, the same confusion, and the same pressure to feel ‘grateful’ for attention that didn’t feel professional or safe.
I’m not here to judge intentions, only to share the impact this had on me. If you are a woman practicing or volunteering here and something feels off, please trust your instincts. You’re not imagining it. You’re not overreacting. A yoga space should feel grounded, supportive, and safe — not emotionally confusing or physically uncomfortable.
If you’ve experienced something similar, you’re not alone

I have practice yoga for 20 years at studios in both New York City and Los Angeles. Shiva is unique because it focuses on the ancient art and magic of yoga. It is an intimate atmosphere while also offering an extensive schedule of practices. Garth, the owner, has a strong presence at the studio, whether he is greeting you at the front desk or teaching. I took class with Elias and particularly enjoyed his ability to weave the wisdom of consciousness into the physical act of the poses. I also purchased a beautiful and efficient yoga mat at the studio’s discretion, which is by far, my favorite of all time! Namaste!

Shiva Yoga is phenomenal. I’ve been practicing here for almost two years and my body and mind feel so much better through consistently practicing yoga at Shiva. The instructors are great— they focus on developing a feeling of equanimity through a rigorous physical practice. They’re experts at providing cues for proper alignment. I’ve gone through the teacher training program here and am now even starting to substitute teach. It’s a lovely place full of warm and kind people!

I discovered this yoga studio my first week of living in West Hollywood. The studio is very inclusive and welcoming. I love the unlimited class option with both in person and streaming. The classes are a perfect balance of asana, pranayama, and dhyana. I am grateful to have this studio as a part of my yoga practice.

After pandemic I was looking for the yoga studio. I tried several ones but they were kind of too modern for me. One day I saw a banner with SHIVA YOGA invitation and I tried it out. From the first class I got a unlimited monthly membership. Shiva Yoga Studio surrond you with kindness, love and acceptance without any condemnations. Classes start from 6:15am till 7:30pm , 7 days a week, from gentle yoga class to power one , which ever you like. So many workshops and activity besides the flow classes at the studio and outside the studio. For me Shiva Yoga Studio as life support . All teachers are so wonderfull , knowledgeable and unique in their own ways with their own wisdom. The staff are all welcoming and kind. And of course the creator of that yoga oasis is Garth Hewitt. With all appreciation to you, all teachers, staff and everything you do for our community!
Namaste, Svetlana

Shiva Yoga is truly a classical and professional yoga studio. They offer such a wide variety of classes — whether you’re looking for flow, hatha, restorative, deep stretch, or meditation, you can always find something that fits your needs. The staff here are incredibly friendly, and there’s a wonderful sense of diversity and openness. What I love most is the close-knit community vibe — everyone is so supportive, and the studio even hosts regular monthly events that bring people together. A beautiful place to practice both body and mind. Highly recommend!

Shiva Yoga is truly the best and most authentic Yoga Studio I have come across in LA. There are many different styles to choose from and they have classes all the way from beginner to advanced. All the teachers are very qualified and each has a different a unique style while still staying true to the practice. Definitely worth trying the studio. I’ve been a member for almost a year!

This is the best yoga studio I’ve been to, and I’ve been to a lot in my fourteen years of practicing yoga. The teachers are genuine, grounded and knowledgeable. They practice what they teach and they have the tools necessary to help someone progress from a beginner to whatever level they want to achieve.
Garth’s training in yoga is very deep. He understands what he teaches and brings clarity and simplicity to everything he teaches. Nick, Sabrina and the other teachers also bring a depth of understanding to their teaching that shows how earnestly and diligently they have explored their own practice.
Shiva is selective in allowing teachers to teach at their school and will require a mentorship period for teachers who obtained their certification at other schools before they start teaching. This policy means there are no dud classes or teachers at the studio.
I love how much effort Garth and the staff put into building community in the middle of Los Angeles. There is always something happening at the studio, potlucks, hikes, retreats, philosophy discussions, and weekend seminars.
Every time you show up at the studio whether you’ve been there every day for the last month or haven’t shown up in two months or if you are feeling super fit in a handstand class or don’t want to get out of child’s pose, you are greeted with the same welcoming presence and respect of the teachers and staff and given space to work on your practice.
It’s the kind of studio that makes you want to rearrange your living situation so you can be closer to the studio. I’m obsessed. :)

So many Yoga Studios……the one that has me coming back for several years now is Shiva Yoga.
Nothing super fancy…..What you do get is the best teachers no matter what level you are. Shiva also fosters a community of connection to others with ongoing workshops, teacher trainings, hiking, pot luck dinners, retreats and more. Garth the owner is amazing. He genuinely cares about all students and reaches out to everyone. All the teachers are great, but my favorites are Sabrina Rose, Nick, Yuki, Elias and of course the owner Garth

After the January fires, I went looking for a place to exercise since i couldn't hike the hills I love. I stumbled across Shiva Yoga and not only found what i was looking for but I found a community. Its an environment where I feel supported and encouraged to care for the wellbeing of myself and fellow practitioners. It’s an i credibly special place and I cant recommend it enough.

I love Shiva yoga!! My husband and I started going here a few months ago via ClassPass. We love the Friday evening candlelight yoga flow with Rebecca. We’ve been going regularly every week and we both feel the benefits to our bodies and minds. Even just once a week, the few moments we spend in class on gratitude make a difference. And my body feels fantastic after class, so much that I look forward to Friday all week and it’s become one of my favorite things we do together. We are strongly considering become full members, because we want to come to more classes and be a part of the community, which seems really robust and lovely.
The studio is beautiful too. And also, Rebecca is a fantastic teacher. Can’t recommend Shiva yoga more highly!!

Shiva yoga is the best yoga studio in town, no questions. I have never been more than an occasional practitioner that would get bored way too easily— but Garth and the teachers at Shiva opened my world to the wonderful philosophy and inner work that yoga unlocks. It’s not just a workout— it is therapy, it is understanding, it is balance and community. I have been to a yoga retreat in Bali with the Shiva yoga group and it has been nothing short of life changing. If you have never thought twice about yoga before I recommend you try a class at Shiva yoga! You will not regret the wonderful change that it will bring about in your life.

Finding Shiva Yoga has been one of the biggest blessings of my life. I had been practicing yoga for 11 years on my own and at random studios over the years. Truly though I was always yearning for a community that felt like it held true to the authentic roots of yoga. Where it was regarded as the sacred practice that it is rather than just a workout. I have been teaching yoga since 2020 and came here initially to sub. Joining this studio though completely transformed my path not just as a yoga teacher but as a student as well. The teachers and staff here are absolutely incredible, kind, and so supportive of their community. The owner Garth is an amazing yoga teacher, but also an amazing human being who brings so much light into the world at a time where we desperately need it. Beyond the physical asana practices they offer meditation, pranayama, and psychic development classes; along with many other community offerings. I have grown so much in the time that I have spent here and feel immense gratitude to have this studio as a place where I can always find solace and peace. Thank you so much Shiva Yoga!! 🙏🏼

Shiva is an incredible studio that has the best teachers and classes for any type of person at any skill level. For those that need to be challenged physically there is shiva power and on the other end, if you’re just looking to stretch and meditate there is shiva deep. There are loads of class levels in between the two as well including hand stand classes, breathwork, and more. With fun seasonal challenges Garth and crew create unique incentives that keep you coming back for more focus practice. It’s become an integral part of my exercise regiment and helps me manage my mood and the ups and downs of life.
Everyone at the studio, whether they are teachers or students, always greets you with a friendly smile and a hello. The studio is massive, serene, clean, and well maintained. It never smells anywhere which is amazing considering how many times i’ve worked up a sweat. They also have the best masseuses if you need a massage and all of it is at a reasonable price. I’ve been all over town looking for a studio but this is hands down the best one on the west side. Namaste ✌️

As a dedicated yogi of (gulp) 25 years, I really appreciate and enjoy Shiva's advanced class offerings. Garth and Nich teach a fantastic power class, which challenge and inspire both seasoned practitioners and aspiring yogis alike. My only criticism is that there are not enough of them! They desperately need a daily power class in the morning/early afternoon... to start the day right! I also love the handstand and backbend intensives-- they've made a visible difference in my practice, which after so many years of plateauing, is thrilling!
*EDIT: GOT MY DAILY POWER CLASS! THANK YOU, SHIVA YOGA, FOR BEING SO OPEN & RESPONSIVE TO FEEDBACK! THIS, ALONG WITH YOUR EXCELLENT INSTRUCTION & LOVELY AMBIANCE, ARE WHAT MAKE YOU THE PREMIER YOGA STUDIO IN LOS ANGELES!!!

I’ve been to several yoga studios around LA and Mexico City. By far this is one of the best, if not the best I’ve attended. They have a broad schedule with varied styles of yoga practice/classes. Some suited to start your day, others to wind down after a long day or week.
The staff is lovely and the place is kept clean and well organized. Their app is very easy to use and reserve classes. They also offer teacher trainings as well as Yoga retreats.
Yoga Nidra is one of my favorites and haven’t heard of another studio offer this practice. This practice has been very beneficial as I recently went through a career shift. A great support to my creative process as well.
Definitely the best yoga studio in the West Hollywood area.

The Shiva Yoga experience has been excellent - particularly the power classes, deep, handstand practice, and various workshops. This is a deep yoga practice for quieting the mind, finding balance, and elevating mind & body harmony. Position holds are on the deeper spectrum, breathing is emphasized, and multiple intermediate/advanced sequences are demo’ed throughout classes to match everyone’s comfort level. In a day and age where yoga has seemingly become “another workout”, frequently with loud music and/or abrupt sequencing, Shiva offers a much welcome approach rooting stillness, proper posture, and reflecting inward.
As part of their holistic wellness approach, Shiva offers massage services, with therapists specializing in multiple modalities. My favorites are Min, PJ, and Ted, with Min providing a traditional Oriental, trigger point approach, and the latter two leaning towards deep, sports, lymphatic drainage & myofascial release.
The studio also offers private lessons for hands-on adjustments, as well as an option to have an additional instructor privately provide hands-on adjustments during regularly scheduled classes. There is also a bookable (for a fee) infrared sauna on premises.

Hands down the best yoga studio I’ve ever been to! Shiva Yoga is so much more than a yoga studio, it’s a community. Some things that set it apart are monthly events like hikes & potlucks, complimentary tea, yoga challenges, and classes for all levels and interests (including great meditation and breathwork classes). Garth has done an incredible job at building this community of amazing people to practice with! I always feel at home when I walk through the doors.

i love shiva yoga! the instructors and staff are helpful, friendly and take care to learn your name. they host so many extra events as well to build community: potlucks, workshops, sound baths, etc. i had gone on and off for a few years with classpass, but consistently for nearly 6 months now since starting a membership and i attribute that to the welcoming atmosphere and phenomenal teachers. the space is beautiful, and i love how the 2 studios do not have mirrors—it’s definitely reduced my self-consciousness and helps to focus on the practice. i might be biased but it feels like even the other people in class are more considerate and have better yoga etiquette than anywhere else i’ve been. i can’t recommend shiva enough!

It’s one of the best yoga studios in LA. What I love the most about this place is how traditional the practices are. Not modern, kiddies versions of yoga. But going back to the roots and meaning of yoga. As I was looking for a studio where I could get my 200hr YTT certification I came across Shiva yoga and the energy completely caught me. This is a wonderful community with excellent teachers. I’ve been learning so much doing the teacher training, from philosophy to anatomy and breath & meditation practices. When I moved to the area, I was surprised by how hard it was to find a traditional yoga studio at room temperature. Most places near me are heated or more fitness-oriented, but I wanted a space to deepen my practice and support my spiritual journey. Here, I’ve taken classes with several instructors, and each offers clear step by step guidance with thoughtful options to advance. It’s exactly the grounded, not-heated practice I was looking for. I especially appreciate the consistent standards and no-frills quality yoga the studio provides in all aspects from the physical practice to meditation, philosophy, breathwork, etc. There’s a foregrounding of lineages without being orthodox. I first came to Shiva Yoga last year via ClassPass for Rebecca’s Sunday candlelit flow and immediately felt a sense of homecoming. I had practiced at this location for about seven years before COVID, back when it was still YogaWorks, so returning felt both familiar and deeply grounding. I joined the trade exchange program and felt instantly welcomed into a warm, supportive community.
It’s been beautiful to see the space evolve while staying true to an authentic lineage—thanks to the heartfelt leadership of the owner, Garth.
Fast forward to 2025, I’m now enrolled in the teacher training program and couldn’t recommend it more to anyone looking to deepen their practice. The studio offers a rich and well-rounded selection of classes—from breathwork and psychic meditation to various levels of asana practice—making it a truly holistic space to grow, heal, and learn.

If you are looking for a yoga studio that will connect you to your spirituality, inspiring teachers, and a kind community, look no further than Shiva. All of the teachers are great- I find myself consistently taking classes taught by Elias, Rebecca, and Sabrina. Each class starts with a dharma talk and starts/ends with the class chanting “om” which creates nice consistency between teachers. There are no mirrors or music which I really appreciate- their studio is really about removing distractions and going inward. And I still get a great workout! The people at the front desk are always kind and helpful- Garth is always eager to meet new people and learn their names.
There are two spaces for classes- a large upper studio and a smaller studio on the level of the check-in desk. When you arrive, you can park across from the studio in a free lot (on Fairfax). Then you cross the street, enter the studio door, and climb the stairs to get to check-in. At the top of the stairs, everyone removes shoes before approaching the check-in desk.
This studio always has community events- potluck meals, hikes, sound baths, and classes to deeper your understanding of the body/mind. They also have teacher training, massage, access to nutritionists, and a sauna.
Looking forward to my next class!

I joined Shiva after 6+ years out of a yoga practice and every instructor I've had has been phenomenal about giving adjustments and tips to get me back into a solid practice and take it to a new level. An extra special shoutout to Garth and Sabrina - definitely take a class with them if you can!

Garth is such a great teacher! Reminded me of my yoga classes in India. There’s a strong emphasis on breath and his instructions were super easy to follow. Definitely coming back!
Parking can be a little tricky unless you catch one of their few reserved spots across the street.

The best studio I’ve found in Los Angeles. Plenty of parking and a great energy. The space has nice high ceilings with plenty of sunlight. Elias lead the class with a calm confidence. His suggested adjustments never interfered with my flow. I wholeheartedly reccomend Shiva.

I love this studio! It truly feels so serene and welcoming as soon as you walk in. I had never done yoga before so was hesitant about my first class, but the teacher (Nich) did a great job and made it easy to follow along. I truly loved the class and feel like I just uncovered something wonderful! So glad I pushed myself to try something new. Overall, amazing teachers and restorative classes. Plus it instantly feels like a little community, which can be hard to find. So happy to now be a part of the Shiva Yoga family!

The place is very clean, gorgeous, & well ventilated. Everything you’d want aesthetically from a studio.
It is not however the place for beginners/rookies. I realized pretty early during my trial membership that I’d have to ‘work my way up there’ which is ultimately why I decided to not return. Wish they could offer a very rudimentary beginners course at a considerate price! It would bring a lot more people like me who have previous yoga experience but have lost their footing in recent years. Despite this, the owner, Garth, was really nice and understanding. Great customer service & great vibe overall! Some of the instructors were kind. Some were excited to show off for “industry” clients. Kinda depends on who you sign up for, which is expected at any studio.
Overall: It’s geared for yogis, fitness people, & WeHo clientele. Clean, safe atmosphere. Walkable from bus stop. Semi convenient street parking.

I’ve taken classes from Sabrina, Garth, Elias, Yuki, & Michelle and thought they were all wonderful. Studio is always very clean and perfect temperature.

They really care about the students and have amazing yoga classes for all levels. I have an arrhythmia which causes my ankles to swell. After taking classes for 2 weeks my breathing is back to normal and my ankles too.
Garth and his team are super friendly and helpful even when the studio was closed he helped me get started.
Many thanks and God bless you guys at Shiva Yoga!🙏🏻

I'd like to start by sharing how amazing and wonderful the classes are. Unfortunately mamagment is a huge problem. I signed up with much excitement when Shiva yoga opened up after the pandemic, replacing my old yoga studio. After a few months my job was transferred to a different location and I was no longer able to attend. I reached out to management which at that time was the owner and I believe still is, explaining to him my situation. To my dismay and utter shock, he straight out told me that there was no possible way to stop the monthly membership. I went back and forth with him, letting him know I'd be paying for classes I can't attend and still no budging. I have moved back since and have tried to maybe take some classes on class pass and for some reason can't even do that. You would think a yoga studio who's all about serving, community and compassion would be more understanding to other peoples situation. So sad and shameful to turn away students of yoga for extra profit. This place replaced Yogaworks prepandemic. And let me tell you the management at Yogaworks would have tried everything within their power to make sure you will be a returning student always! Shame on you shiva yoga!

I have this studio several chances despite something always feeling a bit off. My experience today put all the pieces together for me and I won’t be coming back. I encourage you not to support this business either.
Safety and injury prevention are not a priority at this studio.
When Sabrina was next to me I quietly asked “where should I feel the stretch so I know I’m doing it correctly?” And she put her hand up and said “I don’t have time to talk about that.” As if I was trying to shoot the breeze in class. There’s 7 people in the class, she could have easily pointed where on the body and continued queuing. I was stunned at the unprofessionalism and the lack of care. She then proceeded to go help someone else. She loves to talk to the men in the class. I was so appalled I left.
When I left the owner was in the lobby and asked why I left. I calmly explained that I asked an easy-to-answer question about alignment—which should be a teacher’s greatest priority and he proceeded to say
“Some teachers and students don’t mesh”
No sir, this isn’t a personality conflict. Your instructor was more concerned with her live streaming performance than to prevent injury in the room. He made me feel like it was my fault.
I’ve taken yoga classes all around the world for a decade and I’ve never had an instructor say they wouldn’t answer my question about alignment. It’s simple injury prevention.
There’s a lot of red flags about this place, like the ego radiating from the photos of the owner at historic ruins around the world, but if we’re keeping it objective, not prioritizing safety and defending the employee over the customer are the last straw.
I know he will respond and apologize but if you’re reading this, remember that actions speak louder than PR remediation.

Shiva has become my go to yoga studio. The classes are made for a range of levels/interests and I've really been able to strengthen my practice since I've been coming more regularly. The teachers are all great with their unique practice styles and all start off with a lovely dharma talk at the beginning.
I also love that it's not a hot yoga studio so that I can focus more on form and less on how slippery I am getting 😂

Shiva Yoga is a wonderful oasis with the loveliest staff of trainers you'll find. The yoga they teach is pure, strong, and deep. I was sick and tired of clubby music Yoga that LA seems to be full of - Shiva provided the opposite, serenity and purpose and power. I can't recommend it enough.

To me, this yoga studio is perfect. It's a wonderful blend of both intense physical exercise, a source of meditative energy, and a super friendly community. Everyone who comes participates, partakes, and generates positive energy that is intoxicatingly addictive, and I find myself excited at the prospect of going to class. It's not for people who just want a physical workout -- there are plenty of other yoga studios for people who just want to sweat. This is for those who want a holistic yoga experience, where you come to feel supported and lend support to others.

Should you be prepared to embark on a transformative journey, Shiva offers a mesmerizing sanctuary to nurture growth and inch closer to your ultimate self.
I was on the hunt for a studio that had a cool mix of asana classes, especially ones that dive into inversions and arm balances, and also some meditation and breath work classes. Guess what? Found it here! They've got classes for everyone, and they throw in some extra fun with hikes, potlucks, and monthly satsangs. Their power yoga classes are killer.
The level of instruction is unparalleled. Garth and his team have really made this a marvelous place to study and practice. Highly recommend trying out a class.

The Satsang discussions here are something I would recommend for anyone practicing asana and curious about the depths of yoga philosophy. You get the chance to discuss things with the community and uncover hidden truths which, without sangha (community) often remain obscured. Also - it’s just plain fun to have such open discussions about spiritual concepts. Highly recommend!

The facility is very modern and clean. The staff was super friendly and helpful. I booked my first cupping session with Lydia and it was great. The combo of massage to pinpoint the knots to apply the cups was very effective. My back felt much better after the session and Lydia was great walking me though it and explaining things to me and making sure I was comfortable the entire time. I highly recommend this treatment and definitely will go back!

I loved it, I had my first class yesterday and the atmosphere was very nice, the rooms had a great energy, the teacher is really knowledgeable of yoga, you aren’t allow to use shoes on the wood floor which is nice.
My only suggestion is, because I’m use to practice yoga with some relaxing mantra, I thought maybe could be highly appreciated it from other folks as well.
Thank you you all!!

I've been to several different studios, and this is easily the most amazing one I've ever been to. It's one of those studios where I don't just feel good after a class, but I also feel like I've connected with my deeper self or deepened my practice as they say. All of the teachers are very talented and for me the energy of the studio is very healing and accepting. I was also fortunate enough to attend a community hiking event and I had an absolute blast! The hike itself was beautiful, but the studio community is also full of beautiful souls and it was a privilege for me to attend. If you are even remotely in the area I would highly recommend taking a class.

Amazing studio! I was a regular here when it was Yoga Works and when it closed early pandemic, it was a major loss. When Shiva moved in I was beyond stoked to check them out and was really happy that I did. The instructors are fantastic and they genuinely embrace a deeper philosophy in their teaching of yoga and how yoga transcends the mat into everyday life. I have been attending 2-3 a week and really happy that in-person yoga is back. I couldn't be happier.
