I had a great workout here. I think it’s a very simple straight forward get in do your workout and go home experience that many stressed out Silicon Valley employees could really use. I only took away a star because I do think it lacks some warmth or comradery among the students and it is a bit dirty. If they fixed these issues I definitely think it’s a great gym because it addresses your core need of getting in a great workout so well. I will definitely consider coming here again and would recommend it to others.

The lessons are great (shout out to coach Jose!), but honestly the system is very problematic. I took the 6-week beginner kickboxing program and decided not to continue during the 5th week. However, I still got charged for membership fee after the end of program with the reason being "you need to have 30-day notice." That means I have to make the decision during my 2nd week (!?) And the customer service took forever to respond as well. Honestly so disappointed...

Tis "Smash"-ing indeed.
I've been going to Smash since March, 2023. After going the PT route (with no success) and almost abandoning my hopes of hoopin again without pain, I got to Smash.
Right from day 1, I was able to sqaut pain-free for the first time in about 6 months, thanks to Eddie.
4 months in, I'm able to play basketball again (with reduced pain and zero weakness creepin in).
I'm way stronger than I've ever been, I have the care and expertise i need to help me move better, and, more importantly, found family here.
Give it a try. You won't stop trying once you start.
Oh, and kick-boxing with Coach Jose?Chef's Kiss!!

These guys put deceptive advertisements on Facebook Marketplace that say things like "Evrything must go!" and "Kettlebell for $1, plates for $0.50", but they are not going out of the business and the prices are $1 and $0.50 *per pound*...for metric plates! Just standard mediocre equipment for the same price you can get on Amazon.
EDIT in response to reply below: (1) Items can be *deeply* discounted when companies go out of business and must vacate a location quickly. It is not reasonable to expect buyers to know the actually listed prices are "unrealistic". (2) Clearing out a subset of a business's inventory to make room for new equipment is not the same thing as everything needing to go. Does anyone seriously doubt that this exaggerating language was picked accidentally?

Excellent facility for personal training. These guys have pieces of exercise equipment you’ve never seen before - used for the highest performance athletes. Beyond that if you are looking to buy equipment for your home gym, their prices can’t be beaten. I highly recommend checking these guys out!

Super fun gym! Great workouts. Family friendly. The best thing is that I can work out while my kid has jujitsu, kickboxing, or parkour lessons.

Out son (age 9) has been coming for 3 months to learn Jiu-Jitsu and I cannot say enough about how happy we are with Smash Gyms. The instructors are all very patient and thoughtful, particularly with the less experienced kids and make sure everyone gets the most out of the lesson. Don't let the name make you think that it's all about hard power - this is a really sophisticated, talented team who understand what it takes to grow kids confidence and abilities.

Excellent instructors and classes. Great atmosphere. You will get in shape and learn something fun. I started Jiu Jitsu here for the first time and I was instantly hooked.

I've been going to this gym for about two years. I have enjoyed every bit of it! The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. It doesn't matter if you're a beginner or experienced person, this place caters to every level. And if you're a beginner, don't be afraid to try it out. A lot of times people are hesitant to do something because their afraid of not measuring up to other more experienced students. At Smash Gyms all the students treated me with respect, and were teachers to me on their own. I'd recommend Smash Gyms to anyone wanting to get more exercise or develop their martial arts skills, even just hanging out with cool people. You won't regret it.

The Strength & Conditioning program is as good as it gets. Cainan and James are very knowledgeable, friendly and motivating. And so are the people that come to the classes - it's a team experience with great leaders.
.
The classes usually begin with a strength training which focuses on whole body movements. I tend to alternate between front squat, back squat and deadlift with some upper body reps in between (like pullups, pushups, shoulder press). The second part is usually a conditioning workout. James and Cainan come up with endless combinations that make you sweat which are often based on crossfit workouts.
Can especially recommend the 7am classes, I never thought waking up (and working out) early was meant for me, but I tried and it gives you a great feel of accomplishment for the whole day.

I was in town for work, so I stopped by Smash for some Saturday Jits. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. One student even went out of his way to drive me back to my hotel. This is the Jiu-Jitsu community at it's finest.
Smash Gyms had excellent coaching, a great facility, and tough competitors. I highly recommend this gym!
Thanks Smash!

I recently moved here from Boston and was looking for a workout routine and to try something new and got a one week trial pass to Smash Gyms and decided to give it a shot. Definitely the BEST decision I've made since moving here. The people who work at Smash are really friendly and welcoming. Rudy, Debbie, and Eli are GREAT! The instructors are all very knowledgeable and the classes are definitely beginner friendly; I had never done MMA, BJJ, or Krav before and I didn't feel intimidated going. I usually go to the morning MMA sessions and end up getting my butt kicked by Mike but it's really such a good workout and I'm learning new skills everyday. Smash has become a home away from home and as a Bostonian, Smash is wicked awesome and there's so much mutual respect for each other there. If you haven't tried Smash out yet, I ask... why not?!?!

I've trained in various systems, so I feel like I have a good idea as to what I'm looking for in teachers and schools. When I moved to Sunnyvale, I was simply looking for a gym where I could train and maintain. At Smash, I was very pleasantly surprised. In just 1 month, I've become better conditioned and much more technically mindful. Here's 4 reasons why I love this place:
1. Technical skill: Michael Jen is an outstandingly technical teacher, verging on scientific. One of the best I've had the honour to study under. I'm not heaping unwarranted praise. I mean it. For example, I'd have trouble executing certain applications, he'd come up and point out the most subtle adjustment in 1 sentence, and immediately I'm able to lock-in and execute cleanly without muscling my way through the move. I've had countless a-ha moments like this. You know, the "Oh, so that's how it works!" You will learn how to use leverage, balance, and your opponent's mistakes to your advantage. The slightest pivot or turn of hip can make a huge difference.
2. This is an open learning environment. The best way to progress is to do your "homework", meaning train and tweak your technique after class. At Smash, you can attend the open mat time slots or do some bag work even outside of class. There's something to learn everyday of the week, and everyone's got a great down-to-earth attitude. You can go up to any senior belt or instructor to roll or drill. They should call this "Smash Labs", not "Smash Gym."
3. Well-roundedness. The kickboxing classes headed by Brian are super. A foundation of good conditioning is developed while building steadily on combinations. Brian deals with hands, footwork, and positioning of your weight with a lot of precision during your work on focus pads. He gets you up to speed really fast.
4. Practical. Whether or not you're interested in competing, you'll learn how to fight. You learn to see things from different angles -- including Judo, Wrestling, Krav Maga, and Thai Kickboxing -- so you can react to the unexpected. Most importantly, it's not just a mishmash of watered-down techniques. You're building on a solid BJJ/Kickboxing foundation first. From there, you springboard into other perspectives.
With the right attitude and diligence, this can be a school for "life" not just martial arts.

Very rarely do I write a review. Most businesses just don't compel me to take the time. Smash Gyms is a clear exception. I consider it a place well worth writing about!
Smash Gyms is a family-oriented gym with activities for everyone from the serious martial artist to young kids. Conveniently located in Silicon Valley, the gym is well-equipped with plentiful parking to support its exceptional array of classes--Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Krav Maga, Strength & Conditioning, Zumba, Kickboxing, MMA, Kid's Martial Arts, etc. What makes the gym truly special are the instructors; they are of the highest character and promote an environment that emphasizes safety, technical understanding, patience, and friendliness.
The other reviews on this page already detail all the great qualities of this gym. Therefore, I will simply add my own perspective.
I have been in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program at Smash Gyms for over a year now. When I joined the program, I was an overweight, 37-year-old engineer working at a Silicon Valley high tech company with no grappling ability. I was certainly not the athletic type. Yet, I felt welcomed and encouraged to participate at this gym. My point is that even if you are not a natural athlete or an experienced grappler you may be surprised at what this gym will inspire in you.
This gym has the potential to change your life...give it a try!

I've been studying Krav Maga at Smash with Opher for about a year and I can't imagine a better environment. Everyone knows you by name and there is a ton of focus on personal improvement.
I originally came to Smash because Opher is by far the most qualified Krav Maga instructor in the bay area. I was pleasantly surprised to find a great gym where the owner is extremely accessible and open to suggestions.
I would recommend Smash to anyone looking for motivation to make fitness a part of their life.

This is a review for the adult jiu jitsu classes.
I joined last month. I'll update later as I get more impressions.
Facilities -- Bright, well lit and large exercise area. There's a play area for kids while their parents are training. The bathrooms are clean. No showers. Very welcoming vibe -- feels modern and professional.
Instruction -- The jiu jitsu classes are instruction on technique then you practice the technique with a partner while the instructor walks around and observes, then more techniques are shown (usually variations, next steps on the technique). At the end people roll (spar). There is no standard warmup routine which could be a minus for some people but also serves as a plus in that if you show up a couple minutes late its easy to transition into your class.
While I've only done jiu jitsu they have a really wide variety of classes at a lot of different times. The instructors are friendly and knowledgeable.
Cost Structure -- Monthly and if you buy a year long package you can get a further discount. They don't tend to favor drop in class arrangements (pay per pack). Cost-wise about the same as other BJJ and martial arts gyms I've seen.
Atmosphere -- The atmosphere is very positive here. The people are all very nice that I've worked out with and the instructors are friendly. I've also seen a very wide variety of people working out of different fitness levels and ages, which indicates to me that its a pretty welcoming environment, which is remarkable I think given the nature of the things taught there -- kickboxing, BJJ, kettlebell/functional fitness type workouts -- can seem a little imposing..

Smash gyms is the best! They have an extremely wide range of classes for everyone’s interests at all times of the day. From U-Jam to Krav Maga you get to experience a fun environment, all the while working on your fitness. It’s amazing how welcoming all the instructors and members are. It’s almost feels like a family. They have many social events where members get together to enjoy each other’s company. From beautiful hiking trips, fellow member’s MMA fights to BBQs. They are also very kid friendly and have an after school program for kids. This is a perfect place for your child to finish their homework, work on their strength and confidence and participate in athletic activities. When you belong to this gym you get a fun and exciting way to workout and gain an awesome group of friends.

I love this gym for one reason, the instructors. I've tried every gym in santa clara, sunnyvale and mountain and this place is like no other. Every class is like personal training session. Nice people, amazing instruction. This place changed my life. I got fit and met great people. Bootcamp is my favorite class but I enjoy Krav Maga, jiu-jitsu and kettlebell training as well. This is the best in the bay area to get an intense workout and meet new friends.
