Warning to parents: Sports Academy has serious management and safety issues. Programs are poorly organized, referees show blatant bias, and leadership ignores valid concerns. The root cause appears to be Andrew Schoew’s lack of professionalism and oversight, which directly impacts player safety — kids have been put at risk due to negligent supervision and inconsistent enforcement of rules. Until there’s accountability and competent management in place, this facility cannot be considered a safe or trustworthy environment for young athletes.

On Friday, October 10th, I personally witnessed multiple children get knocked down, brought to tears, and even taken off the court in pain due to reckless play that referees failed to control. Despite seeing this unfold firsthand, Director Andrew Schoew stood by without saying a word or taking any action to protect the kids. This level of inaction and lack of professionalism is unacceptable and dangerous. These kids deserve far better oversight and accountability than what is currently being provided.

Not air conditioned, 90 outside = 90 inside, youd think for as nice as it claims to be theyd have air conditioning, even the local highschool gyms are air conditioned. One male staff member was incredibly rude to us when sitting in one of their air conditioned conference rooms on the weekend during down time for a basketball tournament trying to seek refuge from the 90 degree temps inside, nobody was using any of the rooms on the weekend and he was so angry and mean to us for sitting in there it made me never want to join as a member if that is how they treat their guests.

I’ve had such a great experience at Sports Academy. From the moment you walk in, the front office staff is welcoming, engaged, and genuinely helpful. The doctors are extremely knowledgeable and take the time to explain things clearly, and the support staff is just as professional and caring. We visited the facility over three days for a basketball tournament. It appears this is a multi-use facility, with fitness equipment in part of the area, meeting rooms, and sectioned-off volleyball courts, and a large area full of basketball courts (five were set up for our tournament). While the facility looks nice and newer and the courts have a nice wood floor, I took one star off for the poor spectator seating on court 5 (where we played most of the time), and two stars off for terrible climate control. I don't know that much can be done about the seating at this point, but for the amount of money coming in from parking charges ($20/day) and entry fees ($20 per person per day) I would expect descent air conditioning or ventilation, if not for the spectators at least for the players and referees... you could tell those refs were overheated and dehydrated after a couple of games, and doing it all day in those conditions is not ok. The two large ceiling fans do nothing at all for court 5, and any time we would open the nearby door to get a cross breeze one of the workers would come by and close it, stating their boss at Sports Academy told them they had to (heaven forbid they lose a couple entry fees by people sneaking while giving players and spectators a bit of comfort). Frustrating, because this could be an incredible facility, but climate control is a big deal. Take a note on that from the Roebbelen Center in Roseville, who has an incredible facility with a comfortable climate and great scoreboards and seating.

False advertising, discrimination if you speak up, lack of communication, inconsistent and misleading information, no accountability, missed opportunities, and disrespect toward players and parents.

We attended high school boys basketball tryouts on 2/28/25 and were told we'd hear back in a week. A full month later—with zero follow-up—we had to chase down answers ourselves, following up multiple times and getting a different story each time. They were just stringing us along. Eventually, we were told that the facility never had space for a team in the first place. Meanwhile, my son missed out on other club tryouts based on their false promises.

If you raise concerns about a coach at Sports Academy, your child will be excluded. This facility plays favorites, punishes feedback, and misleads families. I spoke up about a coach, and my son was retaliated against, losing opportunities not due to his performance, but because I challenged their behavior. Retaliation and favoritism have no place in youth sports, yet that's exactly what happened here.

The coaches are not only highly knowledgeable but also genuinely passionate about helping each athlete reach their full potential. The recreational level basketball players to club and beyond athletes will all enjoy this facility. While my son has trained and played at Sports Academy we’ve seen pro basketball players from Anthony Davis, to Kyrie Irving to Keven Durant and even more I can’t remember.

The facility itself is immaculate, featuring top-notch equipment and spacious training areas. Whether you're looking to improve your skills in basketball, soccer, or any other sport, the resources available make it easy to track progress and achieve your goals. The recovery center is fantastic with the latest equipment.

The staff foster an encouraging environment where athletes can thrive, make friends, and support one another. I also appreciate the variety of workshops and clinics that are regularly held, keeping the training fresh and exciting.

Overall, Sports Academy in Newbury Park is a fantastic place for anyone serious about basketball. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to elevate their game while enjoying a positive and motivating atmosphere.

*** I have to respond to the 1 star ratings as most are unfair to this facility. 1. Facility Changes Name- not their choosing. When Kobe passed the company honored Kobe’s widows wishes of removing the Mamba name. Although I disagree with removing the name I’m not the widow or the mother of a daughter who lost her their lives on their way to the facility. 2. $15 to park or to attend. These people obviously have no experience attending club basketball tournaments. These charges are standard everywhere. It isn’t fair to this facility. 3. Referees- you get bad calls at any and every game. If the one team feels they were unfairly treated I can assure you the calls could go your way in the next tournament. This is in singles out to only Sporfs Academy teams. 4. Rude employees- I’m sure everyone has bad days. But I can honestly say I’ve never had a bad experience with any employees here.

I have been a client at sports Academy for over 8 years and I have referred TONS of people here. The customer service’s from the recovery suite and management has gone down hill. I am also a local business owner and my goal is to make my clients feel valued- I do not feel this establishment cares.

I have spent a lot of time here getting to know a lot of the staff, most of which are great. The girl from recovery who will go un named was extremely rude on the phone and management wasn’t much better. I have spent thousands of dollars here and will not go back.

First they said ignore the signs u can ice bath naked, then they get my banned from my BJJ upstairs class. Then kept telling me I'm dismissed after already being in reverse, me asking can you make it safe so I can back out. He says you're dismissed 4 more times, me having to say I'll back out slowly but like could you please move and God bless you. That place is of thuggish and no accountable employees. Do not play in the basketball tournaments at this place. After you pay the $350 team fees the organizers don't enforce the age requirement rules at all. We saw a coach grab a clearly older kid from his older team and give him a jersey to play on his younger team. The cheating was brought to the attention of the employees and they did nothing about it. All they said was "that's something we are working on".

However it's been happening here at the place repeatedly over the years and it will never change. The organizers don't care much about the violations because they already have collected all the money from teams anyways. Definitely will not be bringing my money to this place anymore.

One more thing, there seems to regularly be fights between parents or coaches there also. By the time the sheriff’s department arrives the conflict/incident is over. Every tournament on the weekends should have 1-2 security guards from Saturday morning through Sunday evening for the entire weekend event to keep the place safer. Makes total sense.

After receiving much criticism on their instagram announcement, they turned off the comment section. Overall, it is their personal decision yet a huge insult that is very hurtful.
