Below I left what I originally wrote when I gave this gym 5 stars. But I'm down to 1 star.
The person who runs the aquatic center was rude and dismissive to me today. They have a sauna was always too cold (maxing it at 160). Now, they make everyone get out of the sauna after 13 minutes and stay out of the sauna for 2 minutes. There is exactly 1 sauna in the entire world with this policy. It would take me hours to get any health benefits at this sauna now.
When I discussed my concerns and asked if they have any study, expert opinion or data that shows this is a healthful policy I was told they didn't and I should just use another gym.
Ok, I will.

Original review:
The only thing worse than this gym is all the other gyms nearby.
It is pretty cramped. They could use to double their square footage based on the amount of people and equipment.
Good size pool. Just barely hot enough sauna.
It has egym equipment which I REALLY love. Almost everyone does the recommended circuit on the equipment so I can get a very consistent workout without waiting for equipment to free up.

Regrettably, Stones Y spirals down quickly into a chaotic and quasi-breakdown mode. “It takes two to tango:” ❶Management: lacks training, supervision, transparency, accountability as well as communication with members. In short, the management style is brutal “lockdown:” punish everyone for conduct of a few “bad apples” and quite frankly, its own incompetence. Particularly the staff at pool area are constantly checking or surfing on their cellphones and chatting with each other like a freaking dating scene. Hence, staff neglected enforcing proper rules at sauna resulting in several recent unwarranted EMS calls. ❷Members (certain): Malparidos show no respect to our American values and being “un-American…” 🫠Front desk staff acting like they were "jailers" working at county jails are not friendly rarely smile or say hello to greet you like other YMCAs do even though we’re paying guests/member LOL (*It has since been downgraded to BOP “Halfway House” 😂 )
The cleaning crew on the other hand who are mainly Spanish-speaking immigrants are rather hardworking, respectful and friendly (except a couple of new ones should consider not to wearing so much cologne as the Perfume Culture is dissipating in the City.😉)
In essence, I would agree with other reviewers to the lack of enforcing rules. For instance, cell phones are prohibited beyond locker rooms but quite often people carry them to the sauna room texting, surfing, calling etc. Staff won’t bother to say anything to these self-entitled “VIP” members. Also, some members walking into the sauna room with thier phone without rinse off first and were actually sweating in their dirty cloth socks wearing dirty shoes yet set next to you who have freshly showered. The common sense rule for swimmers in the pool is “circling;” however, I had an incident with a swimmer who took the entire lane to herself without doing the circles as if she didn’t see me (I’m sure she did). She decided to yell at me even though I was strictly on one side of the pool. Then she threw a tantrum and purposedly attempted to collide into me after I in fact argued with her in English. 🤭
More disgustingly, I spotted a few narcissistic members even doing their laundry including underwear, socks, pants and even jackets inside the shower stalls wasting water for over 10 or 15 minutes. No wonder the spinner was sometimes busted as it was not designed to dry your regular clothing. 🤭Put the SIGNs!
It's a shame, the “Stones Y” would be a family-friendly-and-oriented fitness center conveniently with accommodation of free parking and easy access to Muni buses 18, 23, 28, 29, 57, 58 and LRVs M and K in a short walking distance. I hate to leave Stones Y going back to Barcadero Y even though I would not side with these “lone star*” reviewers because reviews imhv are subjective by nature through lenses of one’s own experiences or expectations and often time when the writers are so pissed off by his or her encounters its objective goals to be fair or unbiased would be hindered. Action is louder than words.
Let’s work together to keep the oasis of our “second home is gym” clean, safe, comfortable, friendly and enjoyable to all. (Come on! Let’s be honest once we hit the Y we are either going nowhere or have nothing else to do😂)
PS I will miss my friends Paul and others with whom we would say Shabbat Shalom on Fridays or Shaua Tov! Kol Tov!

I attended for almost 2 years, as a known member of the weightlifting community at the Y. All of the staff treated me well, until a new trainer was hired around March of this year. He saw my clogs (which apparently were banned) and immediately threatened to revoke my membership. When I kindly responded saying I had never heard of this policy in the two years I had attended and worn them everyday, he raised his voice at me and threatened to take away my membership right that moment. Yadi and Christian both had never told me about this, but I complied with the angry trainers order. The last straw was when this trainer saw me on my phone in between sets and immediately raised his voice saying that you cannot hog the machine. Keep in mind I had lifted here for 2 years, and all of a sudden I am being met with this harsh customer service. The trainer was a black man shorter than myself, who I believe was about 5'8, and he was the reason I cancelled my membership the next day to switch to City Sports Club, the cheaper, and far superior gym. DO NOT GO TO THIS GYM. The hours are terrible and the price is outrageous for a facility so small and underwhelming.

Honestly lately this YMCA is a messssss. Even after the “annual closure” when they closed down the entire gym for “improvements”, it’s the same if not more.
The facility doesn’t even have a vending machine where you can buy a water bottle in the event you forget one. Feminine products are only available from a quarter dispenser but you can’t get change from the staff at the front desk so you’re shhh out of luck if you don’t have one on you.
& I understand that ideally you plan for those things & always carry things like a water bottle & a tampon with you but it wouldn’t be difficult for them to have them available for purchase either.

Also, the water fountain downstairs, even after the closure, is out of service 95% of the time. I’m not a maintenance person so I can’t explain why but it seems kind of ridiculous.

The facility has a lot of potential if the efforts to improve it went towards the equipment available & accommodations rather than a mural next to the stairs that yall really didn’t need. Just sayin.

I've been a member here for about 2 months now. Here's my take.

Dislikes:
- really small weight room, during peak hours it gets really cramped. To the point where it can become dangerous where people might accidentally bump into someone mid set. You could also find yourself waiting for equipment to open up if you don't ask to work in
- the basketball court has a lot of dead spots. You could dribble normal when all of a sudden you could lose your dribble. I've seen people trip over their own ball after their dribble fell flat due to a dead spot
- Hours of operation: sometimes i wish it was open later.
- mens locker room/shower sometimes stinks, but that's anywhere. But this place isn't bad compared to other gyms I've been too
- a little pricey if you don't have a discount, but I've used all the amenities so i feel like I'm getting my money's worth

Likes:
- mostly everybody who lifts is really good about putting the weights back where the belong. Not where they got them from, but where they belong.
- a good number of people are really good about wiping down their equipment after use
- There are multiple studios to stretch and exercise
- Lots of sports to try (basketball, volleyball, pickleball, swimming)
- individual showers, ideal for privacy
- the outdoor workout area is a nice change of scenery, the free weight is ideal for bench, squat and deadlifts. The turf area is good for plyo work, stretching and other body movement exercises.
- more than enough lockers, just bring your own lock

Overall:
I enjoy it here. I think the people here are great, staff seems friendly and helpful. The regular gym goers seem to develop friendships and i think it's awesome to see. I haven't encountered any obnoxious or annoying gym goers. The amenities are great. I have yet to feel disgusted being there because generally it's clean.

I want to make a comment about the hip hop class with TERRY P. This man was too racist making comments from my country (Colombia) talking about drugs and Pablo Escobar, there are already 2 classes in a row that he does this type of comment, if you are going to take class try to make this man not to make them this type of jokes that are not FUN. By the way the workout at YMCA is very nice too me :)

I have been a member at this gym for over 20 years and a few months ago one of the staff told me I would have to cut my workout short and leave because I was wearing "work" pants that were not gym appropriate. I was shocked and thought this staff member must be misinformed, so I took pictures of my attire, and sent to the manager (Kim), who told me that "pants with zippers or buttons have the potential to ruin the upholstery of the equipment". I have emails of this bizarre encounter, and she was difficult to get a hold of. I purchased a 24 hour fitness membership soon after and checked with 24 hour if my attire would be appropriate for them, in case this is some new attire policy at gyms. They thought it was ludicrous. I'm not sure what's going on with this Y lately but I'd advise interested customers to look elsewhere. I've been very happy with 24hr fitness.

Reasonable prices, decent equipment, a good sized pool and fairly clean overall... But, it's pretty hard to workout here since most patrons just sit on machines using their phones (5 to 10 mins in between sets), hogging up each machine 20 to 30 minutes at a time... 99% of the time they won't share the machine with you to allow you to work in a set, even when you ask. I think management needs to do a better job with visible signage letting people know that they should not be sitting on machines between sets. I'm most likely going to change gyms since this doesn't really work.

I came on a rare day when I finally got a day off from work. I wanted to just simply join ymca and see what's it about, and Janet here made me sit for almost an hr helping everybody that literally just walked in like I am invisible. She seems very sweet to kids, but I gotta pick up my kid now. You guys need to work a better system for people waiting in line. Time is precious for those who came early. This is horrible! I left with a foul taste in my mouth.

I am a returning member and can't put off a review any longer. The number one problem with this Y is they have no staff! Not sure what the reason, seems like there isn't even management to attempt to recruit. The few staff that are there seem despondent and tired and when questioned have no answers. I hate being someone who laments "the old days", but here I am. The days of wellness coaches, personal trainers, managers that were around managing, staff that seemed to enjoy their work and being at work are gone. Additionally, the women's restroom has been out of service going on 5 months? What?? And no solution being offered, only an occasional answer of "stand by we are working on a solution", really, because I think the person in charge of that hasn't been hired! To see people being given tours for membership, I just wanna say, RUN, I'm right behind you! Just couldn't be more sad and depressed, just like the one wellness coach I see only occassionally with head down slumping around 😥😥😥

Mind you I've been working out at city for the past year, recently got gym-pass and decided to go to the Y as well... but to my surprise.. the staff are absolutely horrible. Why are they all so... sarcastic, speaking monotonically, emitting a cacophonous atmosphere at the front desk, and talking bad about my parent just because I'm trying to get to the orientation. They act like I'm always in the wrong, and don't apologize. They just stay entitled to whatever the hell they on.. So many bad experiences in the first 2 weeks 🤷‍♂️. I had to reschedule like twice, and the first time the staff didn't even show up. In the end they asked me whats your knowledge on weights. I said I went to city for a year and they just let me through like that. Couldn't they have done that the first time. They have my contact info, they didn't even bother contacting the three times they fail to let me do an orientation. Wasting my 3 day weekend for this ...😞Just go to city or 24 hour. Im not even gonna elaborate. The staff are actually tweaking. How does this place have a high rating. 💀it's not like the services are crazy good. Any decent gym should have these things. All these reviewers are absolutely over-glazing this gym, giving it more praise than it deserves.

This place has the worst and arrogant staff. They can’t do their jobs right. Not only do they have a stupid requirement for minor to take an orientation, but they can’t even schedule one properly. I had to come in with my child multiple times early in the morning just to do an orientation. 1st time, they didn’t schedule it properly, second time they scheduled something but when we came in, they said there were different orientations and had to reschedule us again. I mean, how hard is it to show someone around? The person who was there should have done it but said they didn’t know how? How difficult is it? The other person who was there asked me to be patient, which I was already being patient asking us to come multiple times. Sure, have to do ANOTHER reschedule and come in. But the guy at the desk is ridiculously show and has multiple people coming in waiting. We had to come back another time to reschedule because they are slow, and inefficient, and can’t do their jobs properly. I wasn’t going to wait another 30 mins just to make an appointment. Find some people who knows how to do their jobs and not arrogant kids.

Clean gym, great potential- but it is just not possible to work out anytime after 8 am or before 7 pm- otherwise it just becomes the gym for the local high school and everybody sits on machines and checks their phones so that no one else can get in (I’ve tried to work in a set, and I’ll get a “oh I’m almost done” with more sitting). I wish the staff were more engaged on this- if they won’t limit memberships, at least enforce the rule that if you’re on your phone, you’re off the machine and via versa. There are also almost no yoga classes here. Unfortunate.

would give 0 stars if i could lifeguards are crazy rude and is only yelling at us and making hand jestures at us whilst some other woman was blocking the whole lane for half the lap swim. He also accused us of staring at another woman for 5 straight minutes when we were only taking one minute breaks in between laps. They then called us to him and banned us.

I have been going to this YMCA for more than ten years. The front desk staff is compassionate, respectful, and considerate. The lifeguards are professional and keep everyone safe. The classes are fun, progressive and there’s something for everyone. I feel like a valued member at the Stonestown YMCA because I can see they care by providing free towel services. Lastly, shout out to the people who keep the facility clean. My only qualm with this gym are the members that are new and can’t get with the culture. It is daunting having to hear people voice their complaints about the temperature in the sauna or pool. If it is too cold for you, go somewhere else please. With that being said, do us all a favor, keep calm, take care of yourself, and if your words are not kind and inclusive we don’t want to hear it. Thank you.
