Sweat Outdoor Gym – Oakland

Such a great spot! I love this gym — awesome outdoor setup, great energy, and really good workouts. Cassie (the owner) is amazing — super friendly, motivating, and really knows her stuff. You can tell she cares about the community she’s built here.

It’s one of those places that just makes you feel good every time you show up. Highly recommend!

The positives:
- Great facilities with plenty of equipment and space. Love that the gym is outside!
- Ample street parking
- Good sense of community and friendly people. It was my first time and many of the regulars said hi and made me feel welcome.

Small feedback: the class would benefit with providing the instructor a microphone (I believe there’s already a speaker). The gym is on San Pablo so the instructions can get drowned out from the incoming traffic.

The negatives and hence the 2 stars: the instructor Dessert-Rae was unkind and honestly really hostile/aggressive for no reason. Maybe I’m misreading but I found her delivery while giving feedback to be rude and condescending. I’m open to corrections/comments but there were several interactions that made me extremely uncomfortable and would prevent me from booking a class in the future. One example that comes to mind was when she critiqued my form and said “what are you doing? Learn how to do the form first”. And after class she told me “you don’t need to show off, just learn the moves first”. These comments were totally unwarranted (also only directed towards me and none of the other participants), demoralizing and ultimately disappointing coming from an instructor who should prioritize creating a safe and welcoming environment. It should also be noted that she isn’t the most attentive either; she was lounging inside the office or doing unrelated exercises separate from the class.

So glad I found this gym! The coaches are terrific and help give you adjustments and tips on form. The workouts can kick your butt but I love that they are customizable and you can adjust to your skill level. I hadn't done a lot of HIIT classes before and was a bit nervous to start -- now I'm grateful I've found an awesome gym with a great community.

Started going to this outdoor gym during the pandemic and there was just no reason to go back to indoor gyms. Love being able to work out outside, enjoying sunshine and fresh air with plenty of space to exercise. There's even a sauna and cold plunge room for those looking for a quick recovery after workout. The workouts are designed to be challenging but everyone modifies for their own fitness levels. The coaches are friendly and happy to help you figure out the right modifications so just ask!

I love working out here! I almost always attend the noon class during the week. I work from home and it’s the perfect break in the middle of the day plus get to enjoy the sunshine! The coaches do a great job demoing each movement and show modifications which are helpful too. Highly recommend this place!

Sweat has been a savior for me. At 56 I am the strongest I have been in years and injury free. The workouts allow me to push myself in ways that get my heart rate up and strengthen me without injury which is key to being able to keep it all going! The instructors are positive and encouraging and help me modify when necessary to hang in the classes with the 30 year olds and stay safe in my body. The complex movements give me overall strength and stamina. Love this place!

I always get a great workout here!!! They offer circuit style HIIT classes at this location (outdoors) and a second indoor location on College Ave. I have been coming for years with all good experiences — great instructors, varied workouts so you never get bored, no judgement zone with some people going for super intense workouts and others taking an easier day/recovering from injury etc. Worth trying a class!

Sweat is the best! All of the trainers are knowledgeable, encouraging, and kind. There’s never any weird competitive energy or pressure, both of which I’ve experienced at other group work out gyms. Cassie, the owner, is down to earth and super supportive…not to mention an inspiring strong woman! If you haven’t tried Sweat yet, I highly recommend it, and their outdoor location is perfect for getting some fresh air and sunshine on top of a great workout. 10 out of 10!

I started training at Sweat earlier this year after many years swinging kettlebells with a guy who migrated to zoom during the pandemic and never returned to the gym. That’s one of the reasons I love Sweat, it’s got an outdoor facility super close to my house that I can just jog down to as my warm up before my workout. Then, I routinely get my butt kicked by these 50 min. circuits. Love Cassie but she takes no prisoners. I have been taking Jesse’s classes and I would give him 5 stars too. Good energy, good music, tough workouts (with plenty of modifications for all levels) and it’s IN PERSON! And although I have not had the chance to try it yet, Sweat just added the ‘reset room’, with a cold plunge tub and sauna! I’m eager to give it a try and from what I hear, it’s the best deal in Oakland for this kind of facility. Can’t wait to reset!

I’ve been coming to this gym for years now and can’t say enough good things about the workout and the community. I felt amazing after my first session in Sweat’s sauna and cold plunge, so grateful to Cassie and the Sweat crew for offering this opportunity! There are so many benefits from the full spectrum infrared, and the cold water was exhilarating after a hard workout and hot sauna. I was supercharged all day, way better than a cup of coffee. Definitely gonna make this a regular thing.

I love this place because it is outdoors and there is good amount of space. It is circuit-type of strength training. lots of core and leg work. there is only one instructor and they are all knowledgeable, however, they can not pay close attention to how everyone is moving, so this may not be a good fit for those who are new to strength training. i spent 2 years working with a personal trainer and only now i know how to move properly to gain muscle and avoid injury.

I love working out at Sweat Outdoors! The workouts are always new and challenging and the coaches and other participants are very kind and supportive! I started going to Sweat Outdoors in 2021 when I didn’t feel safe working out inside due to Covid risk, and I was so grateful for the option. Nearly 3 years later I still look forward to the classes rain or shine and am so grateful it’s part of my weekend routine.

Without a doubt, SWEAT is the best gym I've ever been a member of. I truly look forward to going to the gym and this has allowed me to keep a healthy habit of working out 4-5 times a week. The staff is very friendly, personable, and helpful if you ever need modifications to the workouts. The workouts provide just the right amount of intensity and allow you room to modify as needed. The workout classes provide the perfect mix of cardio and strength training. I have been going to SWEAT since March of this year, and have seen IMMENSE progress in my strength, muscle definition, and endurance. I especially love working out with the trainers who encourage and motivate me throughout the workout. I can't recommend SWEAT enough. It's worth every penny and I'm so glad I found this community.

TL;DR: if you haven’t been to Sweat before, try a class there and you will definitely LOVE it! Sweat is really AWESOME!!!
I have tried many different studios and Sweat is really the best! First, you will not get bored and feel like you are doing the same old routine over and over again, as the exercises keep changing and incorporate various equipment. They are designed to challenge you to the utmost. Second, the studio is well- maintained and spacious. Last but not least, Cassie, the coaches (all of them, seriously, I mean ALL of them) and all who attend the class are super awesome! All have positive energy and attitude, are extremely encouraging, and make you feel very welcomed and comfortable regardless of your fitness level. To put it simply, it is a place that makes me want to come back year after year (and I have been doing that) and every class that I attend, although challenging, is undeniably super fun!

A few months ago it was time to start shopping for a new gym. I was clear on what I was looking for a place with good community, solid cleanliness routines, outdoor options, and of course a great workout. I loved going to Sweat’s early morning outdoor classes during the warmer weather. It was great to just get out there and know each day would be an awesome workout! When the weather got colder it was easy for me to change my morning routine and join the indoor classes instead. I love having all the options as well as the various class time options to choose from. I’ve definitely gained strength in the few months that I have been part of this gym and am exciting to keep going 💪🏽. I never find it hard to find the motivation to workout being part of this community. Its actually the opposite! I have to convince myself not to go every single day so I get enough rest in between! Overall really love this gym!

I'm a big fan of Sweat workouts. I had a really hard time motivating myself to workout during the early days of the pandemic and started attending classes to see if they would get me back into shape. Happy to report that they have, and not only that, I'm getting stronger. Great group of people, great trainers, and great variety to the workout. It's never easy, you will SWEAT, and you might not be able to lift your arms the next day. All good, because you can just do a leg workout with a few burpees mixed in ;)

I have done a lot of fitness classes and none of the moves are outrageous or convoluted - there are some standard exercises and some interesting variations using a good mix of weights, machines and other equipment. I'd say it's beginner friendly since there are either modifications demonstrated for exercises or you can ask. If you're dealing with injuries or trying to get the movement correct before increasing the weight, you'll still have options to get in a good workout.

All this to say, give it a try!

I love the outdoor gym at SWEAT! I started going in late 2020 and felt safe so I kept coming back (still consistently attending 2 years later!) I was a yogi and runner before but SWEAT has taken over my weekly routine! Big fan of the 7am workouts M/W to jumpstart my day and the Saturday morning class (shoutout to Cassie and Jason who usually teach those times!)

It’s a supportive community (I’ve met a lot of friendly people) and I appreciate that it’s not a pretentious crowd. Overall it just feels really grounded and not at all intimidating. I also appreciate that the instructors greet me and provide recommendations along the way.

One time it was raining outside and I totally forgot my jacket - Cassie went out of her way to give me a sweatshirt for free so that I didn’t get drenched! Grateful for that.

Highly recommend the outdoor setting - you’ll have fun with the circuits!
