I was deeply disappointed in the fact, they kept trying to charge my credit card for membership, even after canceling online, going up there and talking to the manager, sending them a confirmation of the cancellation from them and sending it again.

I’ll start this off with the staff are incredible. That said, I really struggle with the way that the pool is handled for private and swim teams. As of right now, there are 5 days a week after 3:45 that 0 lanes are available for swimmers. The schedule is posted online which I appreciate, but I find zero lanes being open to the public unacceptable - especially during the most common hours. I’ve got a limited window I can swim, and wish that they would either reduce class size or stagger classes to be more accommodating.

Absolutely terrible experience YMCA does not train the people that work at the YMCA.... They know how to pick up the telephone and say hello beyond that nobody has trained them, The YMCA is such a stressful place because the management is so poor, They need an extensive training program and then it should be done three times over so each and every person that works there is completely fully aware of all the very common questions that come in

Brandon is so incredibly helpful. He helped my daughter and I so much so I could get my daughter enrolled in camp last minute. I can’t thank him enough! -Dominique

I was really disappointed after being told I could no longer work out at this gym while safely baby-wearing my newborn. I did this regularly at my previous gym with no issue, and it was a big part of staying active as a mom. The staff member was curt and dismissive, and the reasoning didn’t make sense. Initially, she said I couldn’t use the treadmill, stairmaster, or elliptical — which I was fine with(and totally understood). But then she told me I couldn’t do anything else with my baby strapped to me either.

I understand safety concerns, but if I'm baby-wearing properly and staying within my limits, how is that any different from any other risk assumed in a gym environment? If someone trips on a treadmill or a toddler gets bumped walking to childcare, are you suddenly liable? For a gym that claims to be “family-friendly,” this experience felt the opposite — unwelcoming and unsupportive.

Extremely disappointed in the treatment my wife received today at the YMCA. She was told she couldn’t use any equipment—no treadmill, stairmaster, elliptical, or weights—simply because she had our baby safely strapped to her in a carrier. She wasn’t causing a disruption, wasn’t being unsafe, and has never had any issues doing this at other gyms (Point Loma Sports Club, for example, has always been welcoming and accommodating).

This felt less like a safety concern and more like being kicked out without reason. There was no willingness to discuss options or offer solutions—just a blanket “no” to everything. It’s incredibly discouraging for a new parent trying to stay active and healthy. We expected better from an organization that’s supposed to support families.

Weekend hours are extremely limited. Seems silly paying for full membership only to have couple hour window on weekends. I wish gyms would take customers more seriously. These hours prevent me from meeting my gym goals. There is NO heating here….. so if you go to the gym at 8 am, expect temps to be in 40s or 50s when you work out (not sure how healthy/safe this is). By the time temps warm up mid-day, the gym closes (1pm on weekends). I like to workout in mornings, so I don’t know how to resolve this other than to avoid the gym altogether…. Which doesn’t seem fair or reasonable to me

Love the gym, my only complaint would be not enough attention to people sitting on machines with their Cell phones.

I had a really good time at this gym! It has plenty of gym equipment and a heated pool at a very reasonable price. Omar took care of us showing us around and explaining everything they do!

I like this YMCA. It is clean, the staff are nice, and they have an ample amount of machines. My only complaints would be that the locker room showers are completely open and that there are no calf raise machines.

I like going here for classes and the staff is always nice. I would ask as a senior that the new buzzer and lights be adjusted on the soccer field. The buzzer is extremely loud and the lights shine into all my neighbors apartments next door. Thank you!

Basically the best gym ever. Amazing staff, partially outdoors in beautiful San Diego, great prices. What’s not to love?! I miss this gym when I’m not in town.

Please do something about the seating for the soccer field. Every week at least one person falls down trying to climb the steps. Today i saw three people go down.

There are screws poking up where we’re supposed to sit, the retaining wall is eroding and we can’t see anything. Why build a giant chain link fence in front of the spectators? What are we keeping out? Right now it’s only purpose is as a backstop for all of the bodies rolling down the hill.

It’s dangerous, it’s unusable and someone is going to get seriously hurt. Please make this a priority.

I have a hard time with this review. This is my local YMCA and they have provided me and my family a lifeline of amazing services. This is also the VERY first time I have had a YMCA membership and I have gone all out. We use them for after school daycare the YMCA system for Summer/Winter Camps, soccer, swim lessons and would even use our membership if they were connected to the YMCA of the Rockies which they aren’t unfortunately. Nevertheless the 3 stars are for the following reason. The facility is arguably the most run down and least updated in the entire region. Somewhat neglected. Also, I was incredibly disappointed with the soccer program as it was haphazardly run, the field is neglected and the coaches seemed disorganized. We won’t be returning for soccer. We signed our son up for swim lessons and those are great. Great staff and facilities. However, it is absolute torture as a parent to be poolside. They are always running workout classes that blare music really loudly nearby. And today for example there was a teenage/preteen class that had about 20 kids screaming at the top of their lungs. My sons coach couldn’t even instruct over the 90 dB noises. It was my idea of hell. Overall the staff are 5 stars Character Builders is 5 stars. I love their services and ethos and will continue to use them. I just hope the little things can be addressed.

Update November 2023. Reduced to two stars from three due to our ultimate wholesale cancellation of our YMCA membership. They failed to provide adequate push in support for our son and ultimately failed to be able to support us as a family for day care. The manner in which we lost our daycare was also very inconsiderate to the imposition it placed upon my family. After paying for 3 months of Character Builders and not using a single day we were denied services after only using it for one day. Don’t rely on this YMCA if you have a child with special needs. I conversely found the opposite at Toby Wells. They at least were good about providing push in support. Revised to one star after my son was denied services outright with no advanced notice.

EXTENT YOUR HOURS, please!!
I am from Point Loma, a member of this Y for over two decades. And I would love to be proud of it and use it more often!! But I am sad to see that "our" local Y is not trying to serve those who have a job! Sundays are closed and Saturdays are opened till 3 PM, weekdays closes at 8 PM... What a shame!
I can overlook that the public swimming hours being so very much limited in the late afternoons, I can tolerate the not always clean and old locker rooms, as this Y is really low key and that is what makes it nice. I appreciate this Y classes — some are extraordinary (e.g. HIT Wednesday at 5.15PM with Diana Riggs, one of the biggest assets to the Y as she is not only an excellent coach but unconditionally devoted to the Y). But to see NO EFFORT to put the hours to pre-covid time shows a lack of ability to lead an organization effectively. And the monthly fees are the same for many less hours of operation. But that is the least problem. I hope someone capable will come soon with a plan to reopen the Y with more convenient hours.

I love the gym and it’s typically very low key. I work from home and would love if it was open from 1-3 that’s the only reason it’s a 3 star. It would be a 5 if it wasn’t for the limited hours

They changed it back to normal hours!

I liked the pool and equipment, but I really wasn't a fan of the group shower room the women's locker room has going on. It looked like it had not been cleaned in a while. Also the showers don't have much pressure.

Awesome staff: really friendly and helpful. Facility has all kinds of workout equipment too: I like the focus on more functional equipment rather than just machines. Outdoor areas are a nice perk. Hours could be a bit better on weekends.

If this branch had better hours it would be 5 star. It opens late (so I can't go before work), closes in the middle of the day weekdays, is closed Sunday and has limited Sat hours. I would just go to another branch, but I prefer this one because of open air section and all the outdoor equipment. For people (of which I imagine there are many) who prefer this healthier option it is very disappointing.

Solid facility. Price point is very high compared to other gyms, which is okay with me BUT the hours of operation are inexcusable. It’s total rip off that the monthly fee is so high, but yet the gym is only open for 5 hours the entire weekend. Horrible if you work during the week.
