The Bar Method Berkeley is a boutique fitness studio offering barre classes for students of all levels. The signature method uses your own body weight, the ballet barre and a few props to create a transformative workout that results in long, lean sculpted muscles. Not only does it reshape your entire body, but it allows you to channel your inner strength and leave class feeling strong, confident and poised. Highly-trained instructors customize the exercises to ensure they are safe and effective for any age and every body, including modifications for pregnant women and students with injuries. I became acquainted with Helen, Beth and the Bar Method Berkeley while fundraising for my daughter’s school.

We hosted a class for the fundraiser and the entire experience was delightful. From the professionalism on the business end to the empathy during practice. Beth helped provided a fun, humorous and glut-burning work out. I had such a good workout I signed up for a membership.

I’ve benefited tremendously from the Bar Method. About a year ago, I experienced a patellar subluxation that left me unable to do even simple movements like a child’s pose, and I had to completely pause hiking (something I love) for an entire year.

Thanks to the strengthening, stretching, and flexibility I’ve gained through Bar Method, I’m not only back to hiking but recently completed a 14er in Colorado! I’m still rebuilding my pace, but the progress has been incredible and I know it’s only going to get better with continued practice.

The entire Bar Method community is so warm and supportive; from the front desk to the instructors, everyone makes you feel welcome and cared for. Special shoutout to Helen, Lara, and Alex for always remembering my knee issues and suggesting modifications so I can participate safely and effectively. Their personal attention has made all the difference in my recovery and confidence.

I can’t recommend Bar Method enough — it’s been transformative for me.

I did Pure Barre for a year and only felt pain and frustration. After the pandemic, I decided to try The Bar Method near my house instead, and I’ve been going for two years now—getting stronger and loving it! The instructors are excellent and supportive! They focus on safety and correct posture, ensuring all moves align with how the body is meant to move (those mats are a lifesaver for your lower back). It feels like physical therapists designed it—The Bar Method truly is the Harvard of Barre!

I’m moving out of state, and I’m heartbroken. I’m genuinely going to miss this place, especially since there isn’t one where we’re moving.

Wonderful community and terrific classes. Love how the program has evolved over the years, there are so many choices for class types now it can be hard to pick! I’ve been coming to this studio for 10 years - with a break in the middle for a hip injury. I had surgery to fix it in part because I wanted to be able to keep doing this kind of movement for as many years as possible. Helen and her fabulous team of excellent instructors know how to motivate you, keep you safe and make supportive small adjustments so you’re getting the most out of each move. Their creative combinations keep the classes engaging and fun. I just completed my 800th class and hope I can make it for 800 more!

This is a wonderful fitness studio! The space is beautiful, clean and welcoming. The instructors are kind and energetic. You will receive a lot of individualized attention in class as you learn the ropes of the Bar Method. The classes are difficult, but the instructors keep it lighthearted (there’s always a fun playlist) and accessible (lots of modifications and props). There are a ton of classes on the schedule with an unexpected variety to choose from, like Bar Flow and Bar Cardio. I’ve been taking classes for about a month, and I feel consistently challenged. This is definitely group exercise at its finest.

I haven't been back to the gym post my leg injury so I was hesitant how my body can adjust, Bar Method makes the transition very smooth and I am happily sweating away now :)

The studio feels airy and spacious with plenty of natural lights, sometime it does get full but with the high ceiling, you don't feel crowded. The instructors are detailed oriented and correct my postures gently. Love that! Also, the reservation system holds me accountable to show up for each class. Perhaps this time I will be able to stick to my workout plan!

If I could have dreamt up a workout that was exactly customized to challenge my mind and body, it would be the one you find at the Berkeley Bar Method studio. Between the bright, natural lighting of the space and the care, attention and expertise of the instructors, it's easy to feel welcome. But it's the spirit of the place that draws me back, from the class formats that become familiar but never tedious to the unique exercises that leave your muscles feeling exactly the good amount of sore. And I'll let you in on the secret it took me too long to figure out: the more you go, the more you'll want to go. It's 60 minutes of the day that I never regret.

I have been a client at this studio for 9 years. It's hard to believe, but the time has flown by! During the pandemic Helen, the studio owner, showed us what the true meaning of community was by keeping us all in touch and engaged with online Zoom classes, contests and optional outdoor classes at a local park! We stayed strong together and helped keep each other sane during the shut downs. Once the studio re-opened, Helen being a great business person, added 4 large air purifiers around the studio and updated the HVAC system; there were always ceiling fans. I sincerely appreciate that the air purifiers are still being used. We work HARD in class but it is worth it! I love the way Bar Method is continually evolving and we now have several new formats (Bar Strength, Bar Cardio and Bar Flow) which continue to keep long-time clients engaged and challenged. Cardio was something that was a little sparse before so I'm very glad we have more classes for that now. We also have fun contests a few times a year which further motivate us to work out. The instructors and staff are all wonderful and there are no "bad" teachers, just strong, skilled and caring ones who go through an extensive training and testing program before they are certified. We are also extremely fortunate to have several master teachers in the normal rotation! The emphasis on proper form is what keeps me coming back because I not only want to exercise, but I want to do so efficiently and to not hurt myself! One thing to note is if you do not like to be called out by name with corrections to your form during class, then this may not be the exercise method for you. It is not negative if you are called out in class. It's only for your benefit to keep you from injury and to help you get more out of the exercise. If you come in with that understanding from the start, you will be well-prepared and not be taken aback or offended. If you are a perfectionist, however, you will love it from the start. After 9 years I still receive corrections to my form, especially when I am physically spent, sleepy, or we are doing an unfamiliar exercise, and just like at the beginning of my Bar Method journey I appreciate it! It means the teacher has my best interests at heart and I'm all for not getting injured and also getting the most out of every move I make! Also, different teachers can point out different issues which makes me even more aware of how I can improve. So, don't be afraid to give it a try and if you get called out a lot in the beginning just know we've all been there and it will only make you stronger.

There is something about the lighting, the people and the teachers that make going to the Bar Method Berkeley a real pleasure. Sometimes when you are doing your 100th push up you might ask ”Is this making a difference?” And I can definitely say yes! On Saturday I thought I’d challenge myself to walk all the way up Marin Ave from The Alameda and I have say that after 200+ classes at the Bar Method it was much easier. My calves and glutes are definitely stronger. Helen and the team are always mixing up the classes and are really helpful with any adjustments. If you are looking to try something new I highly recommend Bar Method Berkeley.

I love the encouraging environment of Bar! You can be any age, weight or level of fitness and feel welcomed. The program really is a total body workout, and it’s never easy but can be made harder if you choose all the hardest options. I’m the kind of person who hates machines at the gym. I’d never stick to anything if I had to lead myself through; having these very trained teachers who know how to guide me to get the most effective workout without hurting myself is like having a personal trainer for a fraction of the cost. I find it meditative to be able to throw myself fully into the hard exercises - but never jarring or stressful in the way that HIIT can be (good for those of us with adrenal fatigue) - a kind of focused zoning out that a well led class allows me to do! I feel stronger and have toned and tightened without a big focus on weight loss which can be discouraging. It’s happening naturally. I am grateful for this non competitive, supportive and fun studio.

I am a devoted fan of The Bar Method Berkeley. I've been taking classes 3 to 4 times a week for 8 years. The teachers are highly trained and knowledgeable, each being unique, helpful, patient and fun. Not a young woman when I started, I must admit the first 2 or 3 classes were a bit of a challenge, but once my muscles adjusted, I had, and still have, an exhilarating feeling of accomplishment and well-being at the end of each class.
The studio, always sparkling clean and tidy, is run amazingly well. Helen, the owner, is a creative, clever and thoughtful business woman who continually comes up with ideas to make the studio work for everyone and to make the studio a place you want to be. During the COVID lockdown, she responded with livestreaming classes on Zoom and holding weekend classes outside in the park. Currently, classes are offered in the studio, livestream and as recordings.
And finally, I want to point out the supportive, friendly community of all who teach and all who take classes. It is a comfortable, positive environment.

The Bar Method workout is challenging and grounded in a deep understanding of how the human body works. Seven years ago, I dropped in on a free “community class” at the Bar Method Berkeley studio and almost 1,000 classes later, I can say that it was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my physical and mental well being (which became even clearer during the long months of the pandemic!). From the get-go, I was warmly welcomed by the staff, and any intimidation I envisioned feeling immediately melted away when I saw how uplifting and supportive the instructors were of the array of abilities, body types, and ages around the studio. They have a way of making individual corrections and compliments sound equally positive! After all of these years, I’ve never become bored or complacent, thanks to the variety of classes (from Bar Express to Advanced) and the periodic challenges that inject an extra dose of fun and camaraderie into the Bar Method Berkeley community. Speaking of community, when the pandemic hit, Helen and her staff pivoted to remote classes with impressive grace and speed, and it’s not much of an exaggeration to say that those Zoom sessions were a lifesaver during the long days of quarantine; the studio still streams most of its classes for those who want/need that option. As the world has reopened, though, so have in-person classes—in the safest, most thoughtful way imaginable: vaccines required (and masks, too, at least for now), top-of-the-line ventilation, and deep cleaning between classes. If you’re looking for a safe, effective, and inspiring workout—and a supportive community of interesting, friendly folks—I strongly recommend you give Bar Method Berkeley a call!

A friend convinced me to do a one month trial of Bar Method Berkeley a little over three years ago. I figured I'd try it for a month, but didn't ever see myself as the type of person that would go to a barre classes regularly...And here I am, three years later, and not feeling my best unless I get to class 4-5 times a week! What impressed me most when I started was that there is no single "type" of person that comes to this studio-- it's people of all ages and body types all participating in a workout that works for them. The classes are fast-paced and fun, and instructors offer modifications for when you're new, or if you're recovering from an injury, or to make it more challenging when you're stronger. The instructors are fantastic, the members are lovely, and the studio is a great space in a great location (early morning/evening the meters are free, and there's non-metered parking a block away). They've taken COVID precautions very seriously-- great ventilation, air purifiers, masks, and proof of vaccination. Definitely would recommend trying out, even if you don't think it's for you--you might surprise yourself like I did!

I have been taking classes from this studio remotely for over a year now. The classes are challenging and very effective yet fun and entertaining. This is a workout I actually look forward to! The instructors are very well trained to provide safe and effective sessions that will improve your strength, shape and posture. Each class is different so you don't just go through the motions. The workout is always paired with great music. I don't live close enough to the studio to take in-person classes but the zoom classes have been working surprisingly well for me. All of the instructors are doing an amazing job at creating motivating and fun classes for all attendees in-studio and remote. I am so grateful I found this studio and I highly recommend it.

I'm so glad I "found" the Bar Method!! I started my barre exercise journey at a different brand of class in downtown Berkeley. Bar Method is, honestly, just better in every way. The community is diverse in age and ability. The instructors are awesome with modifications especially for women who are pregnant or have had breast cancer. The space is so clean, bright and airy. The kids who are getting care while mom is taking care of herself seem truly happy to be there. And, most importantly, the movements feel so safe and strengthening. Instructors are extremely well trained to keep everyone's joints and muscles safe. My favorite classe "Bar Restore" with Erin-- 30 min exercise, 30 min stretching. Awesome.
I love this community and can't wait to get back in the studio! In the meantime, the live stream classes are working well.

I have been going here for the past 3 months, and I absolutely LOVE it. The most important thing to me is making sure I do the workout correctly and don't injure myself. Every instructor I had has given me good, hands-on tips to adjust my pose. I always leave the class feeling rejuvenated and I definitely feel the burn in class and later at home. I;ve tried other types of Barre classes before and this is by far the most effective and professional class I've gone to. Love, love it. Only downside: I just wish there more affordable options for monthly memberships.

The Bar Method clearly targets the building and lengthening of all muscle groups including strengthening the core muscles. I have exercised daily all of my adult life. However, I was losing muscle tone , particularly in my upper body and core, as I approached 65 . I needed to strengthen and tone. I am feeling and seeing the results of taking Bar Method classes. Also, if done correctly, there are fewer causes for injury. All of the instructors are very professional and personal in helping class members do the sequences of exercises with the proper alinement. I had heard about the Bar Method for a long time from various friends. They all seemed to get very hooked into it so I went as a guest one Saturday and now I totally get what all the fuss is about. It is such an amazing and different work out to anything I have done before. I have discovered muscles I never even knew about. The teachers are all such good role models and so inspiring and encouraging. It has become a really wonderful community of people that I am now a part of and I genuinely love it. Highly recommend.

Love this studio! Staff are super knowledgable, friendly, and helpful. I have a lower back issue and every instructor is notified before I take their class without me having to explain every single time--just smart. And the classes are amazing. I can't say enough good things about this studio. The owner and teachers are amazingggg, the space is beautiful and the community is seriously lovely--so many nice people. I've been going for nearly 2 years and always look forward to classes here--the hour feels like a luxurious and much-needed escape from regular life. The workouts are safe (the teachers help with proper alignment and offer modifications when needed), effective (take that gravity!) and fun. The music mixes are great too. I especially love Bar Move and Bar Advanced. If you've been thinking about trying Bar Method, get your bootie to a class already. You won't regret it!

I was always really intimidated by this workout, viewing it from the outside. Reality: The staff are super friendly and supportive. There is absolutely no spirit of competition among us clients, and I never feel compared with others. We are all just people trying to live our best life, fitness-wise. I have struggled to find an exercise routine that I am excited to maintain and don't feel too intimidated by. The bar method and especially at the Berkeley location has helped get into a new routine I am excited about. The studio is low key, friendly and welcoming. I don't feel intimidated coming in and am comforted by the varying levels of experience in each class and all the instructors are so attentive and help everyone adjust as needed or give genuine encouragement. The exercise itself provides an essential break to my busy and anxious mind and I leave classes feeling grounded, energized and focused - and I don't crash or get too exhausted to the point of not wanting to return - that's huge for me. The mental, emotional and physical benefits of the bar method classes and the quality of training at the Berkeley location are priceless!

i love this studio. A few years ago i wanted to try a new exercise routine that would benefit my lymphatic system and be cardio too ! I live less than 1 mile away and had been driving past for a few years and glad i finally checked it out with a great groupon deal. i have been taking classes for about a year and a half, sometimes i have to drag myself there but it's always beneficial, i never leave class thinking this was a waste of time, why did i come to class. I All the teachers that i regularly attend class with are personable, motivating and awesome. I love that they walk around making adjustments and don't get upset when i need to pause and get out of a pose that's causing me discomfort. And they don't get upset when I sing along when a great song is on, all the music played in classes is upbeat. It's great too that stretches are incorporated into classes. Sure there are poses that i love and some that i hate (extremely challenging to my body) thankfully the ones i hate aren't in class too often. There's also great social camaraderie with other students in class if you want to create one. The studio and locker rooms are clean, the ladies at front desk reception are smiley and friendly and an extra bonus is seeing Lucy the dog mascot.. Thank you BAR method for being so beneficial to my life. You all ROCK !

The Bar Method in Berkeley has provided far and away the best workout experience I have ever had. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the facility is modern and clean and the instructors are knowledgeable, helpful and super friendly. I have tried numerous forms of exercise in the past, both classes and gyms, and I have not been able to motivate myself to stay engaged in the workout for more than a few months. The Bar Method in Berkeley feels totally different to me - it is a hard workout but one that I want to do over and over again. My body feels so much stronger and the results in terms of toning and weight loss are truly impressive. Very highly recommended!

I've never been an exerciser but finally decided that needed to change if I wanted to be able to move with ease in my 50s, 60s, and beyond. I was interested in finding classes with a focus on strength and flexibility and looked at Yoga and Pilates options. My local studios didn't have a good match for my schedule and I was really impressed with the schedule of classes offered by Bar Method Berkeley and so I decided to check it out!

I've been doing three classes per week so far and really enjoying it! I've noticed I'm improving my flexibility and strength already (after about three weeks). I also really like that each class has a similar format even though 20 to 30% of the exercises are switched up from time to time. It's quick paced and so I'm getting an added bonus of cardio on top of the strength and flexibility work.

The concept of "exercise" came to me later in life. After increasingly severe migraines took me to physical therapy (posture was a major factor), I graduated to the calm and therapeutic world of Pilates. When my Pilates studio closed, I signed up for a Bar Method class with trepidation. I envisioned a "Stepford-esque" environment with pumping house music and suspiciously perky instructors. Well, two year later, I can tell you the music does pump (it's usually pretty good) and the instructors are perky, in the most lovely and approachable way possible. With comprehensive training, they're also REALLY good at what they do. The classes are full of a diverse range of body types, ages and abilities and the environment is so warm and welcoming that even a die-hard exercise skeptic like me has found a place there. My headaches are better managed now than ever before thanks to Bar's focus on strengthening posture muscles and added bonus: I'm in better shape overall than at any other time in my life. If you are looking for a strength training workout that include supportive teachers, friendly staff, a clean environment, and child care, this is the place for you! It's a very challenging workout. Teachers are good at corrections to assure good form and prevent injury. I would absolutely encourage you to try one month and see how addictive it can be. The best full body workout I've ever had. I was first introduced to The Bar Method by my wife who was inspired to strengthen her body to after having trouble moving and carrying our baby girl. In just a few months she is now reaching the best shape of her life and has inspired me to do the same.

Before going to my first class, I'll admit I was both apprehensive and skeptical as I was under the false impression that The Bar Method was just for women. After my first class I was sore (the good like) in muscle groups I didn't even know existed. I have since done a half-dozen workouts and it keeps getting better. One of the best parts is the the staff and instructors! They are all friendly, personable and motivating. I look forward to many more workouts!

Another bonus... they have childcare!!!

I would highly recommend The Bar Method to all genders :)

Bar Method is exactly what my body has been needing as of late. Coming off a grueling marathon training schedule has left my muscles and joints completely taxed out and depleted. I was looking for something calmer and more "zen" but that was more of a workout than yoga. Bar Method fit that criteria perfectly! I love each and every instructor. Everything about the Bar Method in Berkeley is first class. From the friendly and thoughtful reception to the clean and comfortable space and facilities, and especially the way the instructors run the classes, makes for a genuinely enjoyable experience. I'm constantly amazed by the instructors' ability to address everyone by name and attend to their individual needs while at the same time maintaining the flow of the session for everyone.

The Bar Method is new to me. As a former serious triathlete and runner I could have benefited greatly from incorporating this strength and flexibility regimen into my training.

It isn't cheap, but I'm spending more in two weeks on a chiropractor and it's not strengthening my core ; )

I fell in love with barre from the very first time I attended my first class I in this studio in Berkeley. The staff are simply GREAT - super nice, very friendly, very knowledgeable and very passionate about what they do. I love that they have a very efficient and organized system in place so all you have to do is show up. Their child care service is a hugs plus for a mom like me as I can tag along my little girl.
