The Fit Lab was founded in 2015 by former Olympian, Sean Pangelinan. His sole desire was to provide first-class personal training and the gold-standard of body composition analysis tests to adults the greater San Diego area. Today, Sean and The Fit Lab team continues to transform lives one training session at a time.

The Fit Lab is an a great personal studio. I’ve been the hunt for a new gym and personal training and I’m glad I found this place. I've been working out here for just one month, and I've already noticed a difference--gaining 3.5 lbs of muscle and leaning out.
What truly sets this gym apart is the team: owner Sean and trainers Ben, PJ, and Moloki. From the start, Sean takes the time to give you a tour, get to know your goals, and design a personalized workout plan. The trainers are attentive, knowledgeable, and always make sure you're performing each exercise safely and effectively--which I especially appreciate as I get older.
The workouts are challenging yet enjoyable, and the gym's companion app is a great bonus. It helps you follow your workouts and track your steps, macros, and water intake, keeping you accountable both inside and outside the gym.
After just one month, I'm already seeing and feeling results. I'm grateful to have started my fitness journey with The Fit Lab and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a supportive and effective training environment.

I have wanted to get healthy for years, however I was unsure how to go about getting there. I read about the Fitness Lab and Sean’s approach and decided to talk with him about how his program could work for me. I am now 5 weeks into my 12-week program with him and it has been such a positive experience. Sean P at FitLab completely changed my perspective on weightlifting. For most of my life I had little to no interest in lifting. I was very intimidated by other lifters, and by the simplicity of the equipment and the apparent need for great amounts of knowledge to use it effectively and safely. I imagined lifters were unwelcoming and although I enjoyed various sports, I rarely added resistance training beyond warmups and bodyweight exercises.
Finally deciding to try was a big step for me, and when I started about two years ago, my goals were simple: lose fat, gain muscle, and learn to deadlift. I had always wanted to be confident when lifting heavy things, and had recently had a problem with my back due to lifting a bunch of boats during a paddling event. I needed to strengthen up to recover, and I wanted to get to a point where I could lift my body weight or more, without problems.
This week, I did three lifts of 275lbs, a PR, and way above my current bodyweight. More importantly, I had fun during this whole journey. Sean and his team make sure I keep my form safe and clean, challenge me, but also they’re all legitimately great people. They’re fun and welcoming, and the attitude from everyone at the FitLab is welcoming and friendly. Everyone cheers you on.
If you’re thinking about trying something like this out, do it. You might find a place you love, and results that’ll make your life better.

I met Sean at my heaviest weight of 270 pounds I was 30 at the time. I did a free evaluation of my mobility, and it was so bad I couldn’t walk up the stairs without being out of breath, I couldn't get out of bed without back pain, and I hated every picture I was in. I was put in touch with Sean, and I remember feeling nervous and embarrassed at how fat and out of shape I had become. Sean met me with a sense of humor and positive attitude that seem so often to be lacking in our society these days. I’ve now done Seans program and have lost 45 pounds, but more than that I’ve found a gym where I don’t feel judged, I feel encouraged and educated. I’m 31 now and weigh 225 pounds and I feel great and have continued to work with Sean to set new goals. I have made friends here and now find myself wanting to do better in other areas of my life from the confidence I have found at the FITLAB. All the trainers and other members are kind, funny, and caring, they want to see you succeed and they want to give you a place to feel unburdened and focused. If you’re feeling defeated, if you’ve tried to do it on your own, if you’re like me and you just feel lost as to how to get back in shape the FITLAB is the place to come. I wanted to get a quantifiable assessment of how to tackle my fitness goals. Sean's program does exactly that and more. From the get-go, Sean's Hydrostatic Body Composition test allows you to identify lean body mass & fat body mass, and determined a fitness and nutritional program so you can achieve the goals you are looking for by the end of the program. Sean put me on a 3-days-a-week training routine in 5am sessions. I am not really a morning person, but going in that early really made me better prepared for the rest of the day. So much so that now I've made it a habit to get up early and start my days with more energy, motivation and drive. Sean also pushed me to do progressive lifting and corrected me when I was doing a certain exercise the wrong way. He is attentive, focused, fun to work out with, and great to talk to as a person. Definitely recommend him if you are serious about achieving your fitness goals.

I've always struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. In the middle of the pandemic, I reached my limit and had to make a change. Signing up with Sean at The Fit Lab was probably the best decision I've made for myself, and my health, in over a decade. In just 5 months, I am down almost 50lbs, and I intend to keep going. I look great, I feel great, and really it wasn't that hard to achieve.
Sean is super flexible when it comes to your schedule and personal needs. He's also just a pretty chill guy to workout with. The thing I think I appreciate the most is the scientific approach to health. It's more than just "eat less, workout more." You do things like Hydrostatic Dunk tests to get an accurate idea of your lean to fat mass ratio, and you don't just do them once. It gives you a chance to really see what's working for you, and a chance to course-correct if something isn't.
I can't recommend Sean and The Fit Lab enough. Seriously, if you're considering taking a positive step for your health - don't wait!

I first found Sean through Yelp when looking for a personal trainer. I checked out his google/Yelp reviews, looked him up on Instagram via his gym page @thefitlabsd and his personal trainer page @seanpthetrainer and finally decided to reach out. After my first meeting with him he was someone I immediately wanted to work with and I signed up for a 12 week training package. In that 12 weeks I lost 35 pounds… felt better, stronger, slept better, developed better habits. I appreciate him and found him to be so effective that I signed up for a second 12 package.. so far I’m only 3 weeks in and have lost another 20 pounds. The workouts are always challenging but effective! It’s clear he knows what he’s doing- he has a wealth of knowledge and as long as you’re willing to do the work he knows how to get you to your goal. He never leaves me hanging and teaches or corrects me as needed when doing exercises. It’s also a plus that the side conversations are never boring and guaranteed he’ll make me laugh at least a few times during a session. I’ve been with other trainers before but Sean’s different- he has a science to it all and he has his own app that lets you track what you do in workouts/progress pics/ other data. Sean’s got my 5 star rating easily.
3/4/22 Update: finished a 12 week training session and have lost 43 pounds! Also hit a deadlift PR of 290lbs- feeling stronger than ever. Here’s to another 12 weeks ahead!

Sean P. is an amazing trainer. I was incredibly intimidated walking into a gym for the first time and didn’t know what to expect. Sean is so professional but at the same time easy going and makes the workout environment so comfortable. I started with Sean doing one-on-one personal training sessions and it was amazing to see myself slowly transform as a result of Sean’s guidance. I recently started the small group classes (5 people) and while everyone goes at their own pace , Sean is able to tailor the exercises and provide the skilled attention to each group members of an exercise is too difficult or needs adjustment. Had a back injury in July which fortunately wasn't horrible, but it did keep me from exercising consistently for 3 months due to back pain. This event showed me the importance of good form when exercising, which I can say is better thanks to my coaches. To me, anything to improve my exercise technique is important since exercise is a lifestyle, sometimes like therapy. I am a Outrigger Canoe paddler and I have been paddling for over 17 years. I have always cross-trained outside of the canoe. I have done lots of different types of weight training, cardio, circuit, spin, Etc. This workout to me is so unique because it incorporates my sport into my strength and cross training, the guys at the fit lab understand the Dynamics of paddling which most personal trainers do not. I have had several personal trainers and you tell them about what you want but they don't get it unless they do it. So this is a whole new Avenue for me and everyday that I am there I get to work on my fitness level, my strength, and my stroke technique. I not only can watch myself on a ERG that is set up for Outrigger paddling someone else is watching me too. The crazy thing is you always think you're doing something a certain way because in our minds we know what we should be doing but our bodies aren't always doing it. This gives me an opportunity to actually watch myself be critiqued, learn and have fun all the same time. Thanks Red and Sean!

Reasons I love the Fit Lab (and why you want to call Sean asap)
1. STATS. The Dunk Test tells all. Total weight is down ~8 lbs in a few months, but I’ve actually shed 17.5 lbs. of fat and have built 10 lbs. of new lean muscle, which helps burn a ton of calories while I sit at my office desk all day every day. My body fat % is down from 32% to 21% (and I am aiming for 18% in the next month or two). My shape has completely changed, and my clothing size is now an XS in most things – down from a tight fitting Medium previously.
2. Sean P. (owner of the Fit Lab) is kind and intelligent trainer with a solid background in kinesiology. He is also a bad-ass Olympian.
3. The training at the Fit Lab is very UNIQUE. The methods are based on a highly-effective combination of functional/strength-training techniques & physique-defining techniques. Not only will you get stronger and feel great, but you’ll also LOOK YOUR BEST. (My husband is achieving a sculpted, strong upper body & abs. I, on the other hand, am achieving lean muscles, flat abs, and a round, strong booty.) Their workouts are specifically designed to make the visual results happen quickly.
4. I get to tell my old orthopedic surgeon that he was 100% wrong when he said I would ‘probably never be able to do a squat/lunge for the rest of my life with my knee injury’. I was doing both comfortably - with a lot of weight on my back - this AM at the Fit Lab, just a few months into one-on-one personal training with Sean!! I am blown away by how far I've come.
5. I am free of chronic knee pain in my daily life and can enjoy concerts/sporting events, hiking, swimming, and bike-riding again. Oh, and dancing in stiletto heels all night at 8 weddings this year!
6. My results were incredibly FAST and apparent, so I never worried that it was a waste of time or financial resources.
7. My husband has never looked better or stronger, and I appreciate the extra confidence it gave him - in all general aspects of his life - when he realized what he is capable of accomplishing.
8. I have never been as fit - or so happy in a bathing suit.
9. The sessions are one-on-one and you know that you have Sean’s full attention throughout each training for max. safety and motivation. He is constantly providing exercise feedback, encouragement, and high fives. And he’s great at counting reps in a way that pushes you through the struggle!
10. Sean is patient – but tough when he needs to be. I honestly don’t know how he puts up with my whining some days, but I always leave feeling amazing and ready to tackle my day.
Gym days used to be dreaded. Now they’re my favorite part of the week. I cannot thank you enough, Sean P, for changing our lives! I had no idea it could be so fun or easy to achieve this. We both agree we would have called you years ago had we known. :)

I have been driving by The Fit Lab daily on my way to work since it opened and finally decided to look it up online. A convenient exercise plan is the only way i could make something stick and not start and stop like I have before. I called and spoke to Sean and decided to get dunked to get my body fat tested. Needless to say I thought I was much less fat but it was interesting to have a statistic to show you that you need to work on yourself. Sean was super friendly and explained the whole process and we carved out some realistic goals and a diet plan to wrap everything together.
Sean is the perfect fit for a personal trainer and business owner. He's always happy, energetic and super knowledgeable. My plan has been going very well and after going 3x/ week for 6 weeks I feel so much better. Im stoked to see what 4 full months does to my mind and body. There is no set in stone number of session or hard sell workout packages. Sean keeps me accountable to show up and I don't dread coming. It's the highlight of my morning and yes it does take hard work during the workout and I want to quit.
If you're on the fence go see him and get dunked. You won't regret it and if you think it will be too expensive it won't be. It's worth every dime and more to take care of yourself. By the way Sean was a former Olympic rower and is a lifestyle ambassador. Overall he is just a cool guy and not a meathead :)

The Fit Lab, it is the place. Check it out, the personal trainers are well knowledged on fitness, nutrition, and health. The trainers are very nice people, too.
