Went for the first time yesterday morning while on a short trip to LA, and I’m so glad I found this place on ClassPass. I loved that it was women-owned and queer-friendly, but the actual experience exceeded every expectation.

The gym feels incredibly welcoming. Even the check-in area being outside gives it such an open, inviting vibe. So many boutique gyms can feel elite or clique-y, but this place is the opposite. Myles was the coach for my class and he great, strong, beautiful energy. He shared a short message before we started about how fitness helps him navigate pain, and it really resonated with me!

The workout was challenging in the best way, and I loved that some stations were outside. The members were also so kind and positive. I ended up next to John (I hope I remembered that right!), who has been going here for 12 years and even coached before. As a fellow group fitness instructor dreaming of moving to LA, it meant so much that he gave me advice and made me feel so at home.

If you’re looking for true community, connection, and a place that lifts you up, this is the gym

I've been a member of The Phoenix Effect for just a month, and I’ve genuinely loved every class. The coaches bring such high energy and constant motivation, even reaching out after class with encouraging messages that keep me inspired and accountable. The community here is warm, inclusive, and supportive—something I haven’t often found at other gyms. The gym is clean, well ventilated, and has vegan snack and drink options for purchase in the front. This gym is queer friendly, and in a time like this, that means everything to me.

To all the Melrose Villagers out there in need of a full body transformation…look no further than The Phoenix Effect. This tiny gym is a TITAN among workout spots. It is owned and run by Beth Bishop, who teaches, advises, coaches, you name it, she is a dynamic presence. She has set the bar very high, and I should know because I’ve exhausted several gyms and private training spaces in the area over the years, and they don’t even hold a candle. The instructors are total pros - Jefferson, Taylor, and Derek, to name a few, are passionate, hilarious, motivating, not to mention lean, mean, instructing machines. Well, except that they’re not mean. The classes are packed with neighbors as well as clients who come from all over the city just to be a part of what’s happening at TPE. To be completely transparent, this meaty girl is slowly and steadily burning off a little sliver of visceral fat every week and she couldn’t be happier. Meaning me. I couldn’t be happier. I mean, I skip to class like an eight year old, which is a new thing for me. It’s ridiculous. The “fun gym vibe” is infectious. TPE is truly a magical place, the classes fly by in a blink and you’ve sweated off the weight of a jumbo sized slurpee before the clock strikes 45 minutes. Most importantly, you feel like you are part of a healthy, supportive community. I don’t doubt my soul is going through a total transformation of its own as well. And I couldn’t be happier.

If you’re looking for a workout that’ll push you to your limits while still feeling welcoming and fun, The Phoenix Effect gym is where it’s at. Their classes are intense—think heart-pounding, sweat-dripping, can’t-catch-your-breath kind of intense—but the beauty of it is that they’re designed for all levels. Whether you’re a fitness newbie or a seasoned athlete, you’ll find your place here. The trainers have a knack for scaling things just right, so you’re challenged without feeling overwhelmed.

What really sets this gym apart, though, is the vibe. It’s not one of those intimidating, flex-in-the-mirror kind of spots. Instead, it’s a supportive community that’s genuinely enjoyable to be part of. Everyone’s cheering each other on, and before you know it, you’re making friends while you’re planking or sprinting through a HIIT circuit. It’s like a social club where the entry fee is a killer workout. And trust me, these are some of the most thorough workouts I’ve ever done—every muscle gets hit, and you leave feeling accomplished, even if you’re wobbling out the door.

HIIT hits hard at The Phoenix Effect, no question. But it’s the kind of hard that leaves you grinning, high-fiving your new gym buddies, and actually looking forward to the next session. If you want results without the ego, this is your spot.

I joined TPE before covid in 2019, then had to stop (along with the world) and re-joined at the beginning of 2025. Upon my first day back in class I recognized at least four people in attendance - which really shows the amazing retention of TPE. I have tried many other types of gyms - Barre, Orange Theory, Crossfit, Family Style (Like YMCA) but there is, in my experience, nothing close to what The Phoenix Effect offers in terms of community and fitness. I have completed well over 125+ classes and I can confidently say not a single class has ever been the same. You read that right - each class has an entirely unique workout which means It’s always exciting and my body does not plateau. The trainers are inspiring - they are funny, they ACTUALLY care, they give productive feedback and I never feel judged if I am unable to perform a task as intended. They are always able to give me modifications that are specific to how my body can move. TPE also offers workshops and seminars that go beyond the physical workout to focus on mindset and whole body, which is very special and something I have not seen in other facilities. Each month there are fun games and challenges and meet ups (all optional) that add extra spice and fun to the workouts. The community of TPE is just as encouraging. When someone rings the Personal Record bell, the gym goers all cheer from wherever they are in a station. I know it can be very intimidating trying out a new gym, meeting new people, especially working out around new people can feel vulnerable. The trainers, the front desk staff, the gym goers are all very welcoming, so if you are curious, I would recommend reaching out to give it a try. I think you’ll find a very safe space filled with healthy positive community members that all want each other to succeed in whatever personal fitness journey they are on. One extra note - if the parking is the most difficult part due to the location- you can always find spots on the residential side streets for free a block away - don’t let the meters deter you!

OUTSTANDING GYM! I am still shaking from my workout two days ago!!!! Amazing community, tons of outgoing queer women to talk to, and Beth kicked our butts! No bad or intimidating gym vibes whatsoever. I have injuries, it was super easy to approach the coaches about that and they all worked with me on modifying my workout to accommodate them. 10/10 will pump again!

There's no place like The Phoenix Effect. You not only get an amazing workout, but the community can't be beat. And it's not just the coaches. I've worked out at a lot of different places in Los Angeles. This one is special.

I love coming to Phoenix Effect to supplement my fitness needs— I typically try to go in once or twice a month. Its definitely one of the more “hard core” fitness classes I take but I find myself becoming braver and challenging myself every session. I especially love how open to teaching and adaptive the instructors have been with me and my various physical restrictions.

I previously worked with Rachel in her nutrition program for about 2 or so months and found it really helpful for getting my nutritional priorities in place. Rachel acted as that comforting yet stern voice that guided me and made sure I kept to my goals. Since ending my nutrition classes with her, I’ve been able to maintain the principles I learned and feel much more confident in my understanding of my bodies needs.

Classes are about average price for LA per/ single session ($39/session) and the class packages are helpful if you’re going multiple times a week. The nutrition and private trainer memberships are a bit out of my price range these days but a worthy investment if you want a more personalized and involved fitness program.

I also want to highlight that as a plus sized, queer and POC patron, I’ve felt very comfortable working out here and suggest it to anyone looking for an inclusive gym 🏳️‍🌈

This is an amazing gym, with amazing coaches, and amazing people as members. I go to the classes, and as a transplant, it's been a great way to meet people while also improving on myself, body and mind. Welcoming and positive would be the 2 words I use to describe this gym. Challenging would be the third haha

I must give Coach Rachel a shout-out for gently pressuring me to try a class. I joined immediately after. While this has done a lot for my physical health, I think it has done as much if not more for my mental health.

If i could give more than 5 stars, I would!

I've been going here for several months now. I have to admit that I attend sporadically (started out once/week, now 2-3/week). I'm still seeing results! My strength is increasing, and I can see it in better performance in workouts outside of class.

In a sea of trendy HIIT gyms, it's unique to be able to lift heavier with barbells in a gym class environment. They do a great job of programming so that you are lifting heavier but also working on overall athleticism.

I also like that there's no hyper-competitive pressure to do everything as fast as possible. (Looking at you, CrossFit.) The trainers are great at seeing if you should add more weight or back off to avoid injury.

The trainers are all really nice and upbeat. This is a fantastic place to actually work on increasing functional strength in a friendly, supportive environment.

P.S. Parking is easy along the residential streets!

I’ve been coming here close to a month now, and i was pretty hooked after just trying it on classpass a single time and joined on as a member.

The vibe of the gym is really nice, and all of the staff including the trainers are all really welcoming.

Personally I find the workouts to be really challenging but there are people of all ability levels here. The classes basically can be scaled and is inclusive to any fitness level which is impressive.

And one of the reasons I left my old gym was that I felt like I wasn’t being challenged anymore. Here you can actually lift heavy if you want, but there isn’t a gym bro vibe attached to it. The members are nice and everyone is supportive.

The format is pretty simple sort of like a 3X3 stations. But within each workout/exercise there is variations and tweaks in how they’re done that really change and ultimately lead to more growth. Very curated workout experience.

Also hat tip to trainers that actually pay attention to your form and encourage good form during exercises.

I lost 40 pounds in my first year and have kept the weight off while putting on muscle mass and being in the best shape of my life. Not only is the programming top notch but all the coaches know their stuff and can regress any exercise if you have any injuries or mobility issues. They instill a culture of encouragement and celebration of your wins and that permeates across the athletes. When you get a personal record, you get to ring the cowbell and everyone in class cheers for you. You don't have to be a fitness expert, that's their job. All you got to do is show up.

Like seemingly everyone else on the planet, I’m in the constant pursuit of finding a way to “become my best self”. In finding the incredible community at Phoenix Effect, I’m not only physically accomplishing that in so many ways I hadn’t even considered possible for myself; but I’ve also learned that so much of that self-value is emotional, mental and very much all connected. The coaches lift you up from the inside out - focusing on encouragement that has made me feel nearly unstoppable when I step to any barbell or other physical challenge. I’ve long loathed LA gym culture - begrudgingly going because I was chasing a calorie deficit - and now, I go to the gym to better my whole body (mind and soul included!) and have a the best time with a whole community of people I adore. Overall, the coaches are great, really enthusiastic, tons of energy and really have your best interest and fitness goals in mind. While the space isn't huge, they honestly make the best use of it. They have all kinds of equipment that includes assault bikes, rower machines, bands, boxes, pull up bars and all kinds of other things. It's definitely NOT CrossFit but it's a nice mix of bootcamp and CrossFit exercises with a much more personal spin to it. Overall, great gym, great coaches and great clientele. Everyone there is awesome and even if I wasn't looking forward to waking up at 5:15 am to make it to the 6:00 am class, I enjoyed seeing friendly faces who encouraged me to do my best with every workout. I didn't need to be better than the other folks there, I just needed to be better than I was the day before.

The Phoenix Effect has totally changed my fitness game and fitness understanding. Having been a longtime Equinox guy who didn’t love group-based fitness, I have to admit I was skeptical at first. About two minutes into my first class with Jefferson, my skepticism quickly went away and I knew this was the real deal.

What makes TPE so much better than other gyms is that not only is each training session programmed to target an array of muscle groups to help make you stronger, each class also feels like a personal training session with a coach you can also call a friend. Each coach is focused on helping me to have correct form, not over or under lift my weight and to help me become the best athlete I can be. There are times we are doing pretty complex lifts and I take comfort in knowing that I’ll be successful thanks to the coach by my side.

I have to give a special shoutout to Jefferson who is the reason I signed up in the first place. He’s helped me realize my fitness goals and I’m stronger and happier because of it. Plus, he makes TPE a lot of fun.

TPE has been so amazing! I started doing it a few months ago with a goal of leaning out. Since I started going 3x's a week, I've lost 5 lbs and 2% body fat. The coaches are all so friendly and encouraging and I love how strong I feel!

The Phoenix effect has been one of the best decisions of my life. Seriously life changing!!! The coaches are so supportive and really take their time to teach. Not once have I felt out of place or judged, because both the members and coaches are super warm and welcoming. Don’t worry it is as fun as it is challenging. I have seen a huge difference in myself and I can’t wait to continue to grow. I got my friends to try it and now they are all obsessed. Do yourself a favor and CHECK IT OUT! You will not regret it!! Shout out to my Love JEFFERSON who I miss when I’m not in class. He is so amazing and he is dedicated to changing his clients life. I love him and all the wonderful coaches at the TPE. Best Gym family out there !!!!!!!!

PS. I miss you right now Jeff!!!

I came to this place during a visit. My coaches name was Jefferson. I've been training for many years and found myself underwhelmed and disappointed with his class. He clearly has not been a trainer for many years and I almost question his certifications. He couldn't perform many of the basic moves or lifts correctly, like performing a squat at even 90 degrees. Many of the movements seemed taxing on him, even when just showing as an example. I even purposely did incorrect movements and positions, then asked him if they were right- and he didn't correct me and said they looked incredible in his loud mic for the room. When going through the movements for the class, He seemed confused and unsure of what he was doing as if it was his first time doing the movements. He was really nice and a great cheerleader, but I wouldn't want him coaching newer athletes, Especially when they're having us do Crossfit-like movements (but not an actual crossfit gym, made very clear with their sign). After speaking with other members, I learned that he used to be a member of the gym and that was the only gym he's coached- which then made sense, because gyms like to hire from within if they can save the money that it would cost to hire from without-.

The people were great. The location is small. If all their trainers are like Jefferson, I worry for the members of that gym.

I have never felt more supported or encouraged while working out. The whole staff is very knowledgeable. The people who work out there are very supportive as well. I felt like I knew half the people before I even started. This place brought fun back into my workouts. When I leave I want to return for more.

I discovered Phoenix Effect through Class Pass & then did their 21-day jumpstart program. I’m totally obsessed with this place! I love the one-on-one coaching you get throughout the class from the dedicated coaches. Coach Charina is my personal favorite but they’re all amazing. I’ve had some areas on my body that I’ve never been able to change & I finally feel like I have a fighting chance to make that happen with the classes here. I was totally anxious about lifting weights/intense body conditioning but Charina & others have been awesome to qualm that fear & already I’m feeling stronger and looking better after 3 weeks. One of the other coaches, Rachel, even took the time to help me when she happened to be taking classes at the same time as me. The environment is so positive and supportive- I can not recommend it enough!

The Phoenix Effect is a challenging and fun workout! Rachel taught an energetic class that incorporated both cardio and strength training, not to mention a fire playlist! I love having a circuit based class so that you are constantly mixing it up and working different muscle groups; all exercises can be modified too for different levels of experience. Overall a great gym with a lot to offer!

Love everything about PE! The coaches are amazing, I'm pushed to do my best, I learn something new every time I go, my technique has improved, and the music is legit! It's the best way to start my day.

Classes are for all levels and you can make it as challenging as you want.

The coaches are extremely hands on. It's like having a personal trainer but more fun.

I give PE 10/10.

I have been working out at boutique fitness gyms in Los Angeles longer than I would like to admit, and The Phoenix effect gets my top marks (and longevity as a client). The coaches at TPE are not only motivating(and usually cute), but knowledgeable about all the movements we are doing, as well as mobility, and other related and important info that classes at other gyms don’t go into. The classes are designed specifically to work on set goals, body parts, and movement types; not just a haphazard free for all of HIIT. The variety of lifting vs conditioning classes is the perfect mix to not get bored and to work your body in different ways that are effective. Oh, and the challenges are everything. Every few months, TPE runs an extracurricular challenge. On the last one, I lost 12 pounds and couldn’t be happier. If your are looking for a gym that treats your body, mind, and spirit in the right way, this place is for you.

Honestly, I've tried almost every work out out there including Barry's and Orange Theory and have worked out with personal trainers, this has been my ffavoritea. The routines are challenging and what sets it apart from other group classes is that they continously check your form no matter who big the class may be. Highly recommend it.

Joined the Phoenix Effect a few months ago, and I'm LOVING it! Such a fun, supportive, and motivating community. The trainers are awesome, and the classes are always super unique and different. The owners Beth and Kristin make you feel welcome and appreciated right away. It's so rare to find a gym that has badass ladies in every class - but I've found it! They offer great class times after work and on the weekends, with cool challenges each month. They also have meetups outside of the gym - like brunch at the Abbey. If you're looking for a fun gym to meet awesome people and get in better shape - come to TPE!

This place is awesome. A lot of studios like this don't do much except bark out orders and let you sink or swim. Seems like they take a different approach here, and if you're not doing something that looks correct, the instructor is ready to jump in and get you on track. Class sizes are always just right and things are generally very clean and organized. Very good spot and highly recommended.

I usually stray from the group fitness experience, but Phoenix Effect has a way of reviving the team spirit in me I never knew I had. There's something about the humility of the instructors and the (sometimes) cute music they play. They know their form and know how to correct others. So far, their classes have been unmatched in my long journey of group fitness.

I’ve never done any real weightlifting of any kind, and Phoenix Effect has got me hooked. The coaches have shown me that I’m capable of doing types of workouts that I didn’t think I could do.

Phoenix Effect coaches are attentive to make sure that you’re doing workouts in proper form to prevent injury - something I was always worried about when lifting. But they also motivate you to try each workout in some fashion - they’re eager to help adapt to your level and strength. It’s great for beginners and advanced!

I have tried so many gyms in Los Angeles. Many of them are great, but none have been as welcoming as The Phoenix Effect. I really like this place. The coaches are great--super high-energy, but also they notice and care about your form. They know what they're doing, and they want to make sure you're not doing something bad to your body. They're also great about offering modifications for moves that might be too challenging. I leave each class tired and elated, proud that I did something I didn't know I could do before.
